Yankees announce 2014 Spring Training invitees

By

Pitchers and catchers are due to report to Tampa in two weeks and two days, and today the Yankees announced their non-roster Spring Training invitees. Last year the team brought a ridiculous 44 non-roster players to camp, but this year the number is a much more normal 26. As a reminder, players on the 40-man roster will automatically be with the big league team in Spring Training. Here’s the list of non-roster players:

CATCHERS
Francisco Arcia
Jose Gil
Peter O’Brien

INFIELDERS
Russ Canzler
Corban Joseph
Jose Pirela
Scott Sizemore
Yangervis Solarte
Zelous Wheeler

OUTFIELDERS
Tyler Austin
Adonis Garcia
Antoan Richardson
Mason Williams

RIGHT-HANDED PITCHERS
Bruce Billings
Danny Burawa
Robert Coello
Matt Daley
Brian Gordon
David Herndon
Chris Leroux
Jim Miller
Mark Montgomery
Yoshinori Tateyama
Chase Whitley

LEFT-HANDED PITCHERS
Fred Lewis
Francisco Rondon

The most notable ommission is probably UTIL Ronnie Mustelier, who was invited to camp last year and almost won a bench job before getting hurt just as the Yankees were preparing to head north. He had a good but not great minor league season (101 wRC+ at Triple-A), and if the team was unwilling to call him up to help that big league roster last summer, they probably never will.

One thing I am looking forward to this Spring Training is the bullpen competition. There are a lot of open spots and there will be a ton of young arms in camp trying to win one. If nothing else, they’ll be fun to watch in March as we wait for games that mean something.

Holy shit, the Mustelier cheer squad is gonna go bat shit crazy now.

  2. mark says:

Mike – are the Yanks still playing 2 exhibition games in Panama? I don’t see anything in the schedule.

  3. BTG says:

Which players from the list have a legitimate chance to make the team? Sizemore? Daley? Pretty slim pickins’ if you ask me.

If they don’t end up signing another infielder i could see a guy like Canzler making it. They’ll need another guy capable of playing 1B and 3B

Ronnie needs more seasoning, like Betances. Give him a few more years.

  5. The Great Gonzo says:

Damn, I forgot Adonis Garcia and his 80-tool name were a thing.

Fantastic, more fodder for the ‘OMG cut Ichiro and bring north!’ crowd.

Once again (44 years running), I failed to receive an invite. Any chance of trading Zelous Wheeler for Zack Wheeler? After all, what’s in a name?

  7. 5 catchers on the 40MR and we invite 3 more? Yeah, I’m baffled.

Also, as a fan of Mustelier, disappointed, but not much we can do.

    No Slade?

Pretty much where I would put him. He doesn’t have the potential of Strasburg, and he doesn’t have the proven ability of Bailey, but that doesn’t mean he is bad. He can still be a really important part of this team.

  10. Jorge Steinbrenner says:

The excessive groin pulling obviously scared the Yanks away on Musty. That’s just freakish.

Who among us here on RAB has not been subject to excessive groin pulling? Let he or she amongst us cast the first stone!

Is Manny Banuelos on the 40 man?

I’m looking forward to seeing Montgomery this spring. It’d be great if he could have a big spring and get his confidence right. I mean, this is the guy most of think is gonna be the future closer of the team, or at least set up man for Drob, right?

  13. The 1% says:

Why did they cut David Adams?

  14. nycsportzfan says:

Does DePaula really sit at 95 and get it up to 99mph?? Also, whats his change like? Hes got a great build with room to add weight. Hes currently 99 on top 100 prospects on MLB.COM. So also, is his secondary stuff nasty enough to really make that heater a weapon?

  15. mikhel says:

Zelous Wheeler helped propellate his team towards the championship in the Mexican Winter League last night with a huge homerun (and very good defense at OF because in the winter leagues there is too much talent playing 3B so as to have Wheeler play there).

The team he played with (Naranjeros de Hermosillo) during the playoffs as a reinforcement (teams that advance to semis and finals are granted a pick to reinforce their team with a player from an already eliminated team) will being the Caribbean series playing vs Cuba.

  16. mikhel says:

For those interested in watching Wheeler play winter ball:

Caribbean Series 2014 will be aired on ESPN Deportes beginning this next saturday, current champion México will play vs Cuba, and the expectation is that Puerto Rico, Venezuela and Dominicana will have a lot of prospects and major leaguers playing (I don’t know if Pablo Sandoval will agree to play).

The caribbean series pits face to face the champions of winter leagues from México, Puerto Rico, Dominicana and Venezuela, this year’s edition will also include Cuba (the deal is: nobody will abandon the cuban team, otherwise Cuba won’t grant them another permit to play in the future).
