The River Avenue Blues Podcast: Ep. 1 – 4/26/14

Sunday Links: Beltran, TJS, Pitchers, Ice Cream
Yankee place Bruce Billings on DL, recall Preston Claiborne

We’re thrilled to bring back a podcast to RAB. Because of some technical issues, we’re relaunching as the River Avenue Blues Podcast. Instead of a strict weekly show, we’ll shoot for a new podcast at the beginning of each series, so we can talk about the Yankees’ upcoming opponents. Clearly we blew that deadline this time, but we now have something to shoot for.

Mike and I will continue behind the mic, although Mike is currently on the DL. We’ll reevaluate him before Thursday’s (or Friday’s) podcast. But we have a great guest this week: ESPN’s Buster Olney.

Buster will serve as in-game reporter on Sunday Night Baseball (Angels at Yankees) alongside Dan Shulman and John Kruk at 8pm ET. Baseball Tonight: Sunday Night Countdown begins at 7pm with Karl Ravech and Hall of Famer Barry Larkin.

Olney is also an ESPN MLB Insider on where he writes a daily column and hosts the Baseball Tonight podcast. As many of you know, you can find him on Twitter at @Buster_ESPN.

We talk about:

  • Obligatory conversation about the pine tar incident
  • Brian Cashman‘s job security
  • The next MLB commissioner
  • How the Angels overhauled their pitching staff without splurging on free agents
  • How the first few weeks have changed thoughts and predictions about the AL East

It was a great conversation, and thanks again to Buster for coming on the show for our relaunch.

Podcast run time 46:29

Since we wanted to post this before tonight, we have limited listening options right now. Here’s the link:

River Avenue Blues Podcast: April 26, 2014, Ep. 1

In most browsers you can just click on that and it will play in-browser. You can also right click to download it. As soon as we get a few technical matters in order we’ll have it up in iTunes and all other podcast providers. (FWIW, I love BeyondPod on my Android.)

One final note: I am aware of some audio and production issues in this episode. This is something we’re going to work on for future episodes. We have the hardware and the software, so we’ll get it right before long.

  • Mark Teixeira – Ghostbuster (formerly Drew) RIP Egon

Holy Crap the Podcast is back! I am not the biggest fan of Buster but a great day! Also I am trying to go to the website from my browser and I am getting that the site is under routine maintenance, (clearly that is n to the case) but when I click on a link via twitter it obviously brings me to desired page. I tried clearing my browsing history but not help. Any ideas suggestions? I am on mac safari.

    • Joe Pawlikowski

Clear the browser cache. Works 99% of the time.

    • vicki

what’s your issue with buster? he’s a little of-the-old-school re analytics but he’s not a blustery old redneck about it. and i’ve always appreciated his level head concerning hof voting. he’s earned a lot more latitude with me than most of his colleagues over at espn.

and he was pretty great in this podcast.

      • Mark Teixeira – Ghostbuster (formerly Drew) RIP Egon

He has rubbed me the wrong way for a while and just the company he works for in general. The homerism for the Red Sox plus there was the incident that Olney tried to pass off a story as his own when Jack Currey broke the story first. He/ESPN basically refuse to give anyone credit aside from “their sources”. The guy has been around baseball for a long time and I am sure he is pretty knowledgable but I just don’t care for the way he goes about his business.

        • karcotte

          you lost me at “homerism”

  • ProjectNeo

  • Ethan

Thanks a lot for relaunching this! Really enjoyed it a few years ago and very much look forward to new episodes!

  • Nick

Thanks Joe, enjoyable listen on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Look forward to the next one!

  • Jorge Steinbrenner

Welcome back to the podcast world, guys. Will be sure to support you in any way I can.

  • Max

  • Pineda Colada

This is amazing! A great first podcast for the season and I’m sure many more amazing pods to come..thanks so much for your guys hard work and dedication to bringing us fans the entertainment we so crave…
    Keep up the great work!

  • Havok9120

Holy crap. This is incredibly awesome and totally unexpected.

And how the heck did Buster Olney wind up guest-hosting the relaunch? It’s almost as if you guys are respectable journalists or something.

  • RetroRob

Nice listen. I don’t think Buster is correct when he said that Teixeira said his wrist would never be 100%, but instead he said that it might take up to a year.

Considering the focus on minor leagues here on RAB, a great future guest would be Klaw.

    • Mikhel

Supposedly he said it, but when I read it I didn’t find a quote by him, just “never gonna be normal”:

      • RetroRob

I’ve long ago learned to never assume the headline and the story are all that closely related!

There is a history with this type of surgery and Tex should be fine on that front, but it could be a few more months. What he is moving forward is another question. Age and time off may prevent him from being a productive player, but last time on the field in 2012 he was still productive, even if reduced from his peak.

  • Masahiro Dinero

    Good stuff.

Only quibble is the sound quality… made it tough to listen to the whole thing beginning to end.

I don’t know what your recording setup is, but a decent condenser mic, and a small 4 channel mixing board would go a long way for a more professional sound.

    • Joe Pawlikowski

HAHA. I was about to say, “But I do have a condenser mic!” But then I checked my Skype settings, and it was set to the internal mic. So there’s that issue. That should explain a whole lot about the levels (particularly during the Olney interview) as well.

      • Masahiro Dinero

        Haha, yup, that’ll do it!

Looking forward to the next one.

      • john

What are you recording the Skype call with? Most Skype recording software blows. There are better methods. If you would like any help/suggestions, shoot me an email any time.

        • Joe Pawlikowski

I’ve been using ecamm call recorder for six years now, and it has worked for me very well.

  • Mikhel

There is also a service called iVoox to embedd audio on a blog and at the same time have it over at their database an accesible on Android and iOS with their app. Worth checking it.

  • Mikhel

    By the way, good stuff!

  • BrianMcCannon

Fantastic work, Ben. You mentioned that you will be using these podcasts to preview upcoming series. Will the podcasts replace Mike’s usual series preview write-ups? I hope not, they’re my favorite thing about RAB.

    • RetroRob

      Ben? : -)

      • BrianMcCannon

        Oh boy..

    • Joe Pawlikowski

Absolutely will not replace anything we currently do on the site.

    • BrianMcCannon

      *Joe, apologies.

  • Nedro

Today is a good day. Wondering what happened all those (couple of) years ago. Glad you’re finally back.

  • Like a college campus

Thank you! Just the other day, I was thinking about how much I miss the RAB podcast…

  • Cool Lester Smooth

Now you just need to get Ben to start writing here regularly again!

Mike’s great, but it’s nice to have multiple writing styles and perspectives breaking up the content.
