Yankees offered to eat $4.5M of Ichiro’s salary in trade with Astros

By

According to information allegedly leaked from the Astros’ proprietary “Ground Control” database, the Yankees offered to eat $4.5M of Ichiro Suzuki‘s $6.5M salary in order to facilitate a trade with Houston at some point before the season. They also called to ask about a trade involving Chris Stewart before sending him to the Pirates. The leaked info was posted on Anonbin and dug up by Deadspin.

We heard the Yankees were willing to eat salary to move Ichiro all winter, so this isn’t a surprise. Now we just know exactly how much. More importantly, holy crap someone leaked a bunch of trade chatter from a team’s internal database. It reads like a fantasy league message board too — we’ll trade our okay veteran for your top prospect, stuff like that. Here’s the link again. Make sure you check it out. This kind of leak should never ever ever happen.

Well, the Astros have just caused massive problems.

  • waldman’s beard

the phrase ” Ichiro Suzuki‘s $6.5M salary ” makes me throw up in my mouth a little

    • The Great Gonzo

Try saying “JD Drew’s $10M salary” three times fast…

      • The Great Gonzo

        Erm, Stephen Drew…

        Man, that was Freudian.

        • vicki

i would pay jd drew $10mm right now to come hit in the middle of our lineup.

          • Jorge Steinbrenner

Let’s take a deep breath there, vicki. ;)

          • Dale Mohorcic

I’d pay J.D. Hogg $10M to hit in our lineup.

    • I’m One

He’s actually producing fairly well, pretty much as expected for $6.5MM (well, close anyway). That salary isn’t really terrible at the moment. He’d have been a steal for Houston at $2MM if he produced like this (depending on the return, but can’t believe it would have been that much).

      • Jorge Steinbrenner

        Agreed.

      • RetroRob

He has been better than expected, although he’s playing way more than planned, and the more he plays, his numbers are starting to drop. They need to push him back to part-time OFer again.

  • Jerkface

Interesting that Billy Eppler is the guy who seems to be the one doing contact on trades with HOU.

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

      How so?

    • jjyank

He’s the Assistant GM. I’m sure he makes calls on Cashman’s behalf all the time.

      • Jorge Steinbrenner

But it speaks of dysfunction and sleeping on the job and inproper management structure and…..yeah, it doesn’t mean a damn thing.

    • RetroRob

My guess is Eppler does a lot of the ground work, especially if they are grooming him to take over for Cashman.

  • Ed

The Ichiro offer was March 18th, so during the middle of spring training.

  • Mark Teixeddarda

I think they’d have to eat the entire salary and pay additional money to these clubs before they’d take the following players – Ichiro, Soriano, CC Sabathia, Yangervis Solarte, Brian Roberts, Kelly Johnson, Chase Whitley, David Huff, Shawn Kelley, Matt Thorton, Brian McCann, Carlos Beltran, Vidal Nuno. That’s half of our roster that is just albatross contracts, .220 hitters, flashes in the pan and worthless 40 year olds.

    • The Great Gonzo

      LOLZ

    • nyyankfan_7

      Albatross contracts?

Solarte, Whitley, Nuno & Huff all make the league minimum…..but hey nice try.

      • Chris

Seriously. If they decided to “eat the entire salary” of CC, McCann, Ichiro, Beltran and Thornton, I am pretty sure they would not have to pay additional money. Don’t we only have one (fresh last week) 40 year old players on the roster. Mark Texwhaddeva, as Napoli said “what an idiot!”.

        • Need Pitching & Hitting

          Ichiro and Jeter

    • Jobu

So Solarte has gone from franchise savior to albatross in 6 weeks? I didn’t realize that things had gotten so bad. I remember back in the good old days clubs use to be able to pay pre-arb players relatively small amounts of money and send them down to the minors if they couldn’t hack it in the bigs. The game has really changed.

      • Jorge Steinbrenner

        Dude. It’s. Eddard.

        • Jobu

I know, but I am fascinated by his particular brand of lunacy. When reality rears its ugly head Eddard just smiles and invites it to join him in rainbow land.

          • Dale Mohorcic

            troll life.

  • Andrew Brotherton

I can’t believe they could have gotten Hanson from the Pirates and they didn’t immediately drive him to Houston

  • vicki

on october 22, jon daniels thought they were plenty deep at pitching. just goes to show.

  • Jorge Steinbrenner

I find some of the Sox stuff hilarious on here, for some odd reason. Oh no, you just can’t have Mike Carp without paying up. He means more to us than he means to you!

Also, can we just give you former savior Ryan Lavarnway? Pretty please?

Good thing we didn’t have Tanaka yet. Houston may have asked for him in exchange for Bud Noris.

    • vicki

my sockets ache from rolling my eyes at all the uppity sox fans in the comments section.

      • Jorge Steinbrenner

        I haven’t looked. Should I?

  • willie w

everyone wants to make the next zambrano for kazmir trade

  • Ethan

I’m really surprised to see Brett Lawrie considered untouchable by the blue jays. He’s an average player taking up an offensive premium position. The fans here in toronto really like him but c’mon, that’s a terrible baseball decision.

  • http://dookitsdoodles.com Dan Dookit

How come the Yankees don’t have an awesome proprietary system like this one? Maybe that’s why CashMan is so bad at trading? Take some of that NYY Steak Money and put it into resources, sheesh.

    • RetroRob

If they had it you would never know. Some teams love to talk about these type things, others don’t. The Yankees are in the latter.

      • I’m One

But if they did, and word of it leaked out, someone from this site could hack it. Then we’d know everything they were thinking. It’d be so much fun! :-)

  • Yanks

Astros out there like Xander Bogaerts, Henry Owens, Jackie Bradley, Mookie Betts, Blake Swihart, Ted Williams’s head, the rights to 2 World Series Championships, and Fenway Park for Bud Norris. I get asking high, but these trade proposals are just so damn ridiculous.

    • RetroRob

In retrospect, the Red Sox perhaps should have traded Jackie Bradley for Norris. He’s gone from starting CFer and replacement for Ellsbury, to now being described as a “4th OFer.”

      • willie w

bradley leads the league in assists at 9

        • RetroRob

He can field and has an excellent arm, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to hit, which is why he’s now being described as a 4th OFer.

        • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

Looks like we have a Sawx fanboy here.

So, let’s be clear. You know who would be leading the league in assists if he had a job right now? Jeff Francouer. Exactly.

A nice arm and an endorsement from Torii Hunter 8 months ago doesn’t make Bradley valuable to any other team as trade fodder. Get real about your over-hyped, undersized Cameron Maybin.
