Game 65: Back Home with Big Mike

2015 Draft Signings: Finley, Hendrix, Adams, Wagner
Pineda flirts with no-no, Betances nails a five-out save to defeat Miami 2-1

BIG MIKE IS HERE

The Yankees just wrapped up a five-game road trip through Baltimore and Miami and it was: bad. One win, four losses, 15 runs scored, 37 runs allowed. Egads. Thankfully the Yankees return home tonight to start a stretch where 20 of their next 30 games are at home. They’re 16-11 with a +24 run differential at home compared to 18-19 with a -12 run differential on the road. This team is built for Yankee Stadium.

Michael Pineda is on the mound tonight and you know what? Big Mike has kinda stunk of late. He’s got a 5.40 ERA in five starts since his 16-strikeout game, and opponents are hitting .325/.354/.520 against him during that time. That’s really bad! Tonight would be a fine night for Pineda to shake off these last five starts, pitch like the ace we all know he can be, and help the Yankees get back into the win column. Here is the Marlins’ lineup and here is the Yankees’ lineup:

  1. LF Brett Gardner
  2. 3B Chase Headley
  3. C Brian McCann
  4. DH Alex Rodriguez
  5. 1B Garrett Jones
  6. RF Carlos Beltran
  7. SS Didi Gregorius
  8. 2B Stephen Drew
  9. CF Mason Williams
    RHP Michael Pineda

It has been cloudy and on the cool side in New York today, but there is no rain in the forecast, so that’s good. This evening’s game will begin a little after 7pm ET and can be seen on YES. Try to enjoy.

Rotation Update: Masahiro Tanaka will start Sunday with an extra day of rest rather than Saturday, Joe Girardi announced. No word on who will start Saturday, but I wonder if they will start Nathan Eovaldi on three days’ rest since he threw only 36 pitches last night. Bryan Mitchell is also on turn to start that day as well, so the Yankees have options.

Roster Move: As expected, the Yankees brought in a fresh arm following last night’s bullpen marathon. Lefty Jose DePaula was called up from Triple-A Scranton and Jose Ramirez was sent down, the team announced. DePaula was already on the 40-man roster, so no other moves were necessary. He was on turn to start for the RailRiders today and can go many innings if necessary. I hope they aren’t.

    Tonight’s bedtime story.

    • bluedj88

I’m sure Cashman has a bunch of these from his dumpster diving adventures.

    • http://riveraveblues.com/ Mick

Does that say Out of his Mind?

  • Garreddardett Jones

I think it’s a must win for the psyche of the ballclub, Mike. They can’t keep going into these long losing streaks. Pineda’s on the mound on regular rest and they’re back home. They’ve played 10 more road games than home games. It’s time to start a long winning streak and defend the home field.

    • http://riveraveblues.com/ Mick

I’ve read, I believe it wasSweeney , they play 20 of next 30 at home. I counted 22 of 32 to the All Star game. Good stretch, 20% of the season. Should be interesting. Would like to see them push Warren as a starter to test the the pen and all 6 starters for now.

  • dalelama

TJ surgery definitely any day now as all the symptoms are starting to surface.

    • http://riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Hey, if you keep saying it day after day after day, chances are you’ll right eventually.

      • https://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek/ Roadgeek Adam

Especially cause he never specified whom. :)

    • captainmike

      surgery for who ?
who needs surgery on the yanks pitching staff ????????????????????????
I don’t see anyone like that

      • http://riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

All of them. Garrett Jones is starting tomorrow.

  • Y’s Guy

Ok so now I’m ON topic…
    Go Big Mike!!!

  • dave_8

    Flores starting in CF tonite.

  • Pete22

Yankees have got 2 starts since May 25 where the starter managed 100+ pitches. Warren and Big Mike (May 27). Make it 3 Big Mike.

    • Y’s Guy

Tanaka also pitched 3 great games in there, the last one at 94 pitches. It’s been bad but not quite as bad as that sounds.

  • dave_8

Meredith seems fine. Her mascara isn’t running or anything.

    • http://riveraveblues.com/ Mick

I would add Sarah Kustock to the mix.

  • https://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek/ Roadgeek Adam

Interesting, it’s Mike & Al in Miami but Paulie, John and Mike in the Bronx.

    • Y’s Guy

I’m listening on the radio right now, but man, Flaherty is just a bummer when he’s on. Good information dispensed as dryly and monotonously as possible.
      I don’t get it…

      • https://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek/ Roadgeek Adam

I’m glad at least that Paulie is in the booth.

        • Y’s Guy

he can yuk it up with Kay, tell a few jokes about Tino or someone and act like he actually watches baseball when he’s not paid to be there.

  • SuicidalMustacheMasher

Is Meredith preggo? She looks bigger..

    • dave_8

      I think she’s just a big gal.

      • https://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek/ Roadgeek Adam

I think it’s just the camera.

        • dave_8

She should’ve gone one notch bigger with the implants.

          • http://riveraveblues.com/ Mick

            those look for real.

      • http://riveraveblues.com/ Mick

I have never seen her bottom half.

    • Y’s Guy

Would you notice if Jack Curry or Al Letier put on 20 lbs?

  • captainmike

evoldi also has a BAA of 324
these two are not doing well lately

    • Pete22

His problem is against NL teams. In 3 of 4 starts he has not made it past the 5th. His one decent start came against a struggling Nats lineup w/o Werth. Maybe AL teams will do the same when teams see him a couple more times

  • Pete22

Hitters have hit 100 OPS better against Tanaka in night games over his MLB career than during the day. Maybe that why Tanaka being pushed back to Sunday. Big Mike don’t care if its day or night

    • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

      Doubtful

  • https://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek/ Roadgeek Adam

Giancarlo needs to live my dream of a HR that takes out a 4 train window.

    • http://riveraveblues.com/ Mick

I once saw Straw hit one over the old bullpen toward that opening where the train passes. That and a shot 1/2 ay up the upper deck were the 2 most mammoth I;ve seen in person.

      • https://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek/ Roadgeek Adam

Yeah well, I think it would be fun to be in a 4 train when that happens. Free baseball.

  • Todd

Can’t wait to go to the game and get a Yankees Dunkin gift card loaded with $2!!!!!

    • cxz

That should be enough to buy you a cup of iced coffee minus the coffee and fixings. What a deal

    • Pete22

That doesn’t get you a cup of coffee, does it?

    • http://riveraveblues.com/ Mick

      1/2 a cup of coffee?

    • RetroRob

$2?? Can’t they at least give people enough money for a large regular coffee?

      • Todd

They are sooooo cheap…..they also give away a pack of seeds at another game!

  • dave_8

    Low baseball IQ

  • RetroRob

I always like it when the opposing hitter just surrenders.

  • Pete22

Something about guys with a D to start their name. Dumb comes to mind

    • http://riveraveblues.com/ Mick

      How about a double D?

  • GPU

Bunting Bryce Harper has a challenger for stupidest play of the year.

  • Garreddardett Jones

Dee Gordon looked like our lead off hitter watching that pitch go by.

    • Y’s Guy

Sterling said he dropped his bat and wasn’t even in position when the ball shot by. He and Suzyn kinda made a thing about it…

  • ZachA

Whenever you see Beltran out there in the OF and despair, realize that it could get much, much worse.

    Carlos Beltran: -11.1 UZR/150
    Hanley Ramirez: -34.9 UZR/150

    • https://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek/ Roadgeek Adam

Hanley Ramirez is LF, but he’s also not a natural outfielder. Red Sox made a boon.

      • ZachA

Ramirez is 7 years younger than Beltran and not too long ago, he was playing the most physically demanding/skilled position as a shortstop. There is no excuse for him to play this abysmally IMO.

        • https://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek/ Roadgeek Adam

He’s also out of position in all fairness.

          • cxz

Anywhere he plays, he’s out of position if we want to be really fair. Should be a DH.

    • cxz

Is there any player with a lower UZR right now? That’s incredibly terrible, like worse than I could have imagined

  • RetroRob

It’s not what time they went to bed. What time did they have to get up to report to the park?

  • UnKnown

Get a damn win before I flip my shit. If Wally thinks Joe was testy last night he should interview me if this one doesn’t go on the left side tonight.

    Let’s Go

    • Andy

What happened with Wally and Joe?

      • UnKnown

Joe supposedly bullied Meredith and Wally took to Twitter about it. It was much to do about nothing… Just Wally being a clown.

        • Andy

Interesting. Seems like Meredith towers over Joe in interviews, surprising that she would take that shit.

  • Pete22

Get to bed at 4 AM sounds tough except when you consider they dn’t have to get to work until 4 pm. Also they can sleep on that big chartered plane .

    • Acid Dolphin

Yes, erratic sleep schedules that are out of sync with the rise and fall of the sun have no negative effects on human beings. Especially if they make money, because money reverses biology.

  • RetroRob

    Stanton is Judge-like.

  • UnKnown

Could the Yanks ever get Stanton and Harper? If so how?

    • cxz

Free Agency would be their only chance.

    • Pete22

Tie Hal up in the closet and take his wallet

    • Y’s Guy

The cheapest way might be to actually buy the Nationals and the Marlins.

  • Pete22

Batting Stanton 4th has to be the dumbest thing. Why let any pitcher get away without facing him in the 1st when pitchers are least effective. Also, fewer PA batting 4th.

    • https://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek/ Roadgeek Adam

So is batting A-Rod 4th arguably.

      • Pete22

As good as Arod has been he does not compare to Stanton, but its not a bright move except McCann has been Stanton-esque in this park

        • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

Stanton on this Marlins team? Fine. McCann or A-Rod? Fine either way.

      • Y’s Guy

Wow, batting the huge rbi guy 4th…revolutionary thinking right there…

        • http://riveraveblues.com/ Mick

          yep. It’s a new world.

        • https://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek/ Roadgeek Adam

But honestly, I liked A-Rod 3rd. He has the OBP for 3rd.

    • http://riveraveblues.com/ Mick

If he gets up in the 1st there’s men on base maybe…

    • Acid Dolphin

You should have read that link that guy posted a few days ago when you said this stuff. They made a compelling argument for the 4-hole over the 3.

      • LazerTown

Stats make the argument that you should put your best in the 2 spot actually.

        • Acid Dolphin

Right, that’s why I only mentioned the 2. I think that article argued that 4 might have slight advantages over 2 for hitters who are both high average and high power, but I forget exactly.

  • dave_8

    We’re gonna hammer this guy

  • Y’s Guy

I thought it was kinda cool that the Marlins let Jose Fernandez announce during last night’s game (on the radio and tv) which day he’s expecting to come back and pitch for the Marlins. And pretty cool that he wanted to do it!

    • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

      Please no

      • RetroRob

Are you scheduled to go to one of the upcoming games?

Truthfully, I wouldn’t mind if he dragged it out over two or three games so that there’s one game where he’s within two hits and people know it could be that game. Right now most people aren’t expecting it tonight.

        • https://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek/ Roadgeek Adam

          He is.

          • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

Kinda, I will purchase any ticket if he’s really close. Like if he hit 4 hits tonight I’d buy a ticket for tomorrow right after he got the 4th hit.

    • Y’s Guy

with hit #5 being the game winner!

      • RetroRob

Hit for a HR to the same spot Jeter did with Christian Lopez out there catching it…and not returning it this time.

    • oldmanalex

and then get a podium out and he says ” thank god for making me a yankee”

    • Pete22

He only needed 2 that game, but yeah, 5-5 would be cool

      • RetroRob

Yes. Jeter had the pressure off once he got the second hit. I actually think in Jeter’s mind once he got a hit his first time up the pressure was off. He knew the hit was coming soon. With A-Rod, I don’t know. He might feel more pressure being one hit away. So if he actually went 4-4, I think he would feel a lot of pressure on that last AB.

  • I am Brett Godner

    Atta boy Arod.

  • yankeefeminista

    2996 and counting!

      eww

    • I am Brett Godner

You might want to get that re calibrated.

    • Y’s Guy

Jones, Beltran, Gregorius, Drew, Williams seems a bit…um…short, no?

  • ZachA

So wait if the Yankees can’t market Arod’s accomplishments because of PEDs, why can they market his 3000 hits with the hit tracker and infographic on YES?

    • https://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek/ Roadgeek Adam

Great internal hypocrisy. Baseball in general is over everything, except the internal Yankees office.

    • Dan A.

The Yankees don’t have editorial control over Yes. Fox is the majority owner, and I’m sure the Yankees would vehemently deny any control over what Yes puts on during the broadcast.

The real question is what they do when A-Rod hits the 3,000. if they come out with shirts, then there’s no reason that pretty much kills their argument.

  • yanksgoyanks

I feel like Jones strikes out everytime I see him, he steps in, and he strikes out. Tex should be playing. Hes having a monster season.

    • Gregory Eckes

They don’t watch this game. He’ll get some hits when you don’t watch

    • SuicidalMustacheMasher

Lets keep Tex healthy too.. They would love to play him every game, but you also gotta give him some rest

      • yanksgoyanks

Yeah, Id honestly rather start Mark and have Jones in right over Carlos.

  • Dan A.

I’m very happy A-Rod is being productive this season, the Yanks wouldn’t be here without him. But I cannot stand how far John Sterling is up A-Rod’s butt. A-Rod’s not just getting 3,000 hits as the result of a fine career. There’s a lot of context involved that he’s not mentioning, and it’s totally ridiculous.

    • Y’s Guy

He has abandoned any mention of the PED situation, however, even with the PEDs its a pretty awesome achievement. You still have to lift the weights, you still have to take batting practice till your hands blister, you still have to stay up all night watching video of your swing or someone else’s curve. And more than anything, you have to have an awesome, i mean AWESOME hit tool!
There needs to be some mention of how Arod got there, but it’s still an accomplishment. Maybe tarnished, maybe controversial, but still an accomplishment.

      • Pete22

Before 2004 it would not surprise me if 100% of players at least tried steroids.

From 2010-2012 when he used the Biogenesis crap, we have no proof these were even PED’s, just that he thought they were, and there is no evidence these helped him at all. In fact, assuming he is clean this year, they might even have hurt him. Might have been estrogen for all we know.

In 2007 Arod had a TUE from MLB for testsosterone. That was a monster year, but was legit.

        • Y’s Guy

whoa, boy, he’s a PED er as sure as the sun’s gonna shine. Probly since H.S. Maybe the biggest roider of all time.
          Let’s not go overboard.
You still got to hit the ball,. though.
‘Roids didn’t get Melky 3,000 hits.

    • I am Brett Godner

There is but it’s been talked to death. It’s not exactly a secret.

      • Dan A.

But it’s not like Sterling isn’t hyping up the 3,000 to an equal death.

        • I am Brett Godner

It would take years to,even catch up.

    • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

A-Rod’s one of the best players ever and just saying “steroids!” is a shitty argument and you’re wrong if you say it.

  • oldmanalex

wish we could fly in some of our miami fan base to fill this place up.

  • Gregory Eckes

Buck Showalter is the master of getting the most out of players who have failed from other teams. Steve Pearce, Jimmy Paredes and now Chris Parmelee who is hitting .714 with 3 homers since being called up

    • GPU

      Pearce this year: 79 OPS+
Paredes since May 20: .563 OPS
And Parmelee has what, 7 PA’s?

      • Gregory Eckes

True, his magic only lasts for a short time. It just seems like the O’s get these rejects from other teams who all the sudden play way beyond themselves for an important period of time.
Caleb Joseph is another one. Ryan Flaherty too

        • GPU

Or…bad players sometimes have abnormally strong months/weeks/seasons and then they run into a regression to the mean.

          • Gregory Eckes

            But all with the Orioles?

            • GPU

              Umm…this happens all over MLB.

              • Gregory Eckes

But not with the concentration that it happens with the Orioles

                • GPU

The 2013 Red sox were basically comprised entirely of this. TB this year has players like Logan Forsythe, Joey Butler…

So, Stephen Drew at home again, should we expect a 2 HR game?

  • http://riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

It really is too bad Refsnyder has a .750 OPS. They’re going to need to trade for a 2B.

    • HoopDreams

      Prado, Prado, Prado.

    • Gregory Eckes

The last time you asked for a prospect to be called up, it was a disaster and he was sent down

I don’t want Refsnyder called up. That’s why I said they need to make a trade.

        • Gregory Eckes

Oh I thought you were being sarcastic. Sorry

          • http://riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Nah. A .750 OPS in AAA is not impressive for a bat only guy.

            • Andy

Hypothetically, if he goes on a tear the next month or two, would that change your mind or you still lukewarm on him?

              • http://riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

I’ve been lukewarm all year. Give him a try, sure, but I’m not expecting much.

                • Andy

I’d love for them to give him a try. Fed up with Drew

    • Beauee

Wouldn’t it be worth giving him a try before making a trade? Or no?

    • Pete22

Eovaldi and Arod (pay 1/2 his salary), Judge , Bird, Ref and Severino for Dee Gordon and Stanton?

      • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

They’d rather do it without A-Rod in the deal, ignoring the obvious issues

      • https://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek/ Roadgeek Adam

        I wouldn’t trade A-Rod whatsoever.

    • Beauee

Also, who do you think they should trade for? Zobrist has been very underwhelming so far.

      • https://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek/ Roadgeek Adam

        The ghost of Frankie Crosetti.

      • cxz

Yeah, I agree about Zobrist. It may get to a point where OAK may be better off not trading him at all if he doesn’t improve, so they can get the QO pick out of him if nothing else.

      • Gregory Eckes

Probably Brandon Phillips is the next best option

        • cxz

            • cxz

I’d deal with the shenanigans because he’s far from the worst in the league, but man is he pricey for the ages he’s going to be paid through.

              • https://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek/ Roadgeek Adam

I don’t like that kind of attitude though. If he agrees to shut up and behaves, ok.

                • cxz

The attitude would probably make for good TV if the benches ever cleared against Boston though, I do have to say. He and Hanley going at each other would be something I’d consider paying for

                  • https://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek/ Roadgeek Adam

                    That would be epic.

        • dave_8

          Yeah, him and Cueto.

    • bernbabybern

Well for players on the team with more than 200 pa, he has the 4th highest ops. The 3 above him are two outfielders and a 1b/dh. I don’t think it’s bad.

      • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

How he compares to the team doesn’t matter. What matters is how he compares overall.

        • bernbabybern

I would imagine there are very few 2b in the International League with a higher ops.

          • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

Even so he’s going up against MLB 2B, not AAA ones. The bar starts at .750 and probably only goes lower when he comes to MLB.

            • HoopDreams

You could give it a shot though, Drew sucks and options on the market are very thin.

              • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

I agree, I’d rather play Refs and see what happens

    • NYYFanFromThePhilippines

I have this feeling that Refs would go the way of Montero, in that the Yanks see him more as a trade piece rather than a player for them in the future.

Here’s another candidate for 2nd base: Neil Walker. Guy’s having a down year right after winning a silver slugger last year. Pirates have Jung Ho Kang to play the infield. Might work

    • https://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek/ Roadgeek Adam

      Kang is a natural SS.

      • Gregory Eckes

Jordy Mercer does have some career experience at 2nd base.

    • Bret The Hitman

      I like the idea.

  • RetroRob

Gardner does need rest. That’s one of the significant downsides of Ellsbury being out. Really can’t sit Gardner.

    • Andy

Gardner also thrived in that 2 hole

      • Bret The Hitman

I”m surprised Joe let him in the 2 hole.

    • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

Should sit against lefties just to get him rest.

      • RetroRob

They were doing that from time to time when Ellsbury was in the lineup. Gardner has a tendency to get into funks, and also plays a physical game. I thought playing a max of 140 games with some proactive resting will help him as the season goes along. Can’t really do that right now.

        • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

Mason CF, Young LF, Beltran RF

Not amazing, but he needs the rest

        • Gregory Eckes

I just have always thought that Gardner could be better at BA. I was thinking Johnny Damon without the power, especially since Damon won that WS and then he left and Gardner immediately took over.

    • Pete22

DL him to give him a rest and play Flores and Mason everyday

    • Bret The Hitman

Rest him on the Reds or Padres.

  • NYYFanFromThePhilippines

    Just get it to ARod

  • RetroRob

Are those plays other SS’s aren’t all going to make? Most are hard line drives, but they seem to be right at him. They either have him positioned great, or just a fluke. He has seemed to hit more line drives in that region of late.

    • Andy

That one was right at him. I think one of the others most other SS’s make, the other he got way up there

      • RetroRob

That’s sort of my memory. Hard hit balls, maybe robbed on one of them, the others just hit in the wrong region. Not knocking the SS at all because he’s made them, but not all line drives are necessarily great plays.

    • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

    • CashmanNinja

I dunno…from the naked eye it looked like a strike to me.

      • Pete22

Naked eye is useless at these camera angles. Game day is pitch f/x used to evaluate umps and that everyone calls to replace umps

        • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

          ’twas a strike

        • CashmanNinja

Maybe…but considering it passed right over the inner half of the plate I’d pretty much say the naked eye is correct. Plus Stanton didn’t argue it at all and McCann got up and started walking away right after he got the pitch.

        • CashmanNinja

Which game are you going to?

      • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

I plan to go Sunday regardless, but I’m waiting on A-Rod to see when is the best to go and I’ll just buy a ticket. If he got to 2,999 tonight I’d just buy one tonight.

        • RetroRob

Once he’s within two hits it could be any game. One more hit tonight and he’s only three short, so it could happen tomorrow. Basically, no matter what he does tonight he’s now in the range it can happen at any game, although once he’s within two that’s when it gets serious. Good luck timing it. : -)

          • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

I gotta get lucky, not like I can go every game thursday-sunday. I’d only do that if he was 1 away.

            • RetroRob

I know I mentioned this before, but I was at the game Bonds set the all-time HR record. I wasn’t even thinking of going to it, wasn’t even on my radar because he slumped for a a few games and I live in NY, not SF. By luck a business trip took me into SF. I didn’t go to the game my first night there, but the second night I grabbed a co-worker, we walked to the park, bought a ticket off a scalper ($35, great seats) and watched him hit the HR. That was August 2007. Haven’t been back since. Couldn’t have planned it. Just happened.

First off, did the Yankees trainers actuallly NOT go to Miami?
Secondly, all these years when guys went down to Tampa to get ready to do a rehab, they’ve been working with ‘other trainers’ (obviously questionable characters when you hear Suzyn say it….)

That would have been a strike though. That was not outside. Was a bit high though

  • RetroRob

Every time Big Mike does that slight dip and trip off the mound, usually hen he delivers either a K or a walk, I cringe. I keep expecting him to grab his shoulder. It’s his normal delivery, but it’s scary because of his history.

Can Hechavarria really hit 300? damn good player if he can

    • RetroRob

He hit .276 last year. I think he’s in his 3rd or 4th season, he’s 26, so it wouldn’t be a shock. He did once hit .300 in a season in the minors, but it was PCL/Las Vegas driven. I wouldn’t bet on it, but it’s not impossible he has a season like that in him.

You and Andy’s takes are both very interesting

My comment is Garrett Jones independent, A-Rod specific.

    • Pete22

The odds are 1/6 that he does. Jeter had much longer odds. Probably better to keep the ball in the park and then you don’t have to beg for the ball back. I think he will try to shoot one to the opposite field for a single

    • Garreddardett Jones

It will be a triple in the gap and Alex will collapse on 3rd base.

      • NYYFanFromThePhilippines

Then out of nowhere, Derek appears and helps Alex on his feet as they race towards home on the most dramatic and WTF inside the park homerun.

        Hey, you can’t predict baseball!

  • Garreddardett Jones

Put Rob Thomson back at 3B. Even he wouldn’t have sent Alex there. He’s the slowest runner in baseball.

      Ortiz?

    • bernbabybern

He’s not the slowest runner on the team.

  • RetroRob

Didn’t have an issue sending A-Rod there at all…just as long as he doesn’t pull a leg muscle.

  • Centaur Hips

Offense finally getting on base against the Marlins.

    • NYYFanFromThePhilippines

On the same day that Alex returns to the line-up. Hmmm….

      • yankeefeminista

        What a coincidence.

        • Gregory Eckes

Yep. Think it was a mistake not to play him at least 1 of those 2 games in Miami

      • RetroRob

I think one of the reasons the Yankees have been bi-polar this year, both offensively and with their winning and losing streaks (they go together), is they have a bi-polar lineup, with a number of plus hitters at the top in Ellsbury, Gardner, Tex, A-Rod, McCann, but they balance that out (for lack of a better word) with a bunch of negative hitters in Drew, Didi, Beltran, even Headley, and now compounded by the loss of Ellsbury. Adding in the loss of A-Rod’s bat in NL parks compounds it, and it’s not hard to see why they have games where they score a bunch of runs at times and other games where they don’t. It’s the opposite of the great lineups of the past that were circular.

They need to get Ellsbury back and Headley to get into the positive territory, and hope that Beltran can at least be a 100 OPS+ hitter the rest of the way. We all know it, but the obvious place to upgrade with a bat is a 2B, but that’s also the hardest.

        • NYYFanFromThePhilippines

Ellsbury returning would (hopefully) help that, and I hope Headley does indeed have a stronger 2nd half in him. I’m think Beltran is what he is, a hitter that would have hot streaks but is mostly a shell of his former self. Didi being better only means that he is not a black hole (which is good) but I doubt he becomes a consistent plus hitter. And Drew is, well, Drew.

So our best hope is Ells returning and 2nd half Chase TOGETHER with Gardner, Tex, Alex, and McCann staying relatively hot. That would be 6 of the 9 spots, which isn’t bad at all.

A trade for a productive 2nd baseman would change things up, but as you’ve said, that would be hard.

          • RetroRob

Beltran after his horrific April has been ok with the bat. Didi is not going anywhere, so yes it’s a return of Ellsbury, hopefully a decent second half from Headley (he does have a history of strong 2nd halfs) and that gets back to maybe an upgrade at 2B. I can see it happening.

Big Mike has not thrown 100 pitches since May 27, and only Warren has joined him at 100+ since May 25. He is only 2/3 of the way through the game with 94 pitches. It ain’t happening except as a team effort with a couple of RP’ers.

Come guys it would of been like three 1000 comment threads on why Joe pulled him with in a NO NIO
And he would of pulled him.

    • Mustang

Its mix blessing if they win the game.

  • Pete22

Big Mike does not even get to break 100. Its rare these days for any Yankee pitcher to get to throw more than 100 pitches. Actually, its not just the Yankees

    • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

      He had 100 pitches

  • NYYFanFromThePhilippines

Big Mike will never throw a no-no in his career.

    • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

It’s too late, jinxes can’t be undone.

      • NYYFanFromThePhilippines

        I’m so sorry Big Mike.

        • SuicidalMustacheMasher

You just ruined my jizz material by jinxing Big Mike! Now he won’t be as hot to watch

        • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

It’s okay, just don’t say he’ll be a Cy Young award winner 6 years in a row or something.

          • NYYFanFromThePhilippines

            But…you just did.

            • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

              Fuck… We’ve ruined his career

    • Y’s Guy

Sooooo not important. Do you know how many great pitchers never did?

      • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

        Attempt to save his mistake

  • Centaur Hips

Sorted itself out. Eovaldi’s outing last night makes you appreciate Pineda a little bit more.

    • https://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek/ Roadgeek Adam

      Bullpen says thanks.

    • Pete22

This is a team that has scored 2 runs or less 24 times this year, which makes Eovaldis performance especially interesting

    • Y’s Guy

No it doesn’t. I still unappreciate what Eo did last night just as much as I did last night.

  • HoopDreams

Latos sounds like a guy the Yankees wold target if the opportunity presented itself.

    • cxz

I was worried about him earlier on, but he’s regained some of the lost FB velocity recently, so it something to at least consider I suppose

  • SweetSpot

A stinker with an extra days rest and a gem on regular rest. Will be interesting to see what the Yankees do with Pineda the rest of the way.

    • Garreddardett Jones

They need to go 6 man and let him pitch on somewhat regular rest. 11 days is way too long.

    • Centaur Hips

      to da bullpen!

    • NYYFanFromThePhilippines

      So…

      Extra Days Rest = Stinker
      Regular Rest = Gem
      Short Rest = ?

      *Head Explodes*

      • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

Impossible. He’d be too good it defies the laws of physics. Kinda like black holes.

      • SuicidalMustacheMasher

My private parts would get sore if I had to watch Pineda pitch every other day.. Great, but sore

        • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

When we win tonight, will you still be on the edge?

          • SuicidalMustacheMasher

We got destroyed last night, so I will give it another day.. I won’t be completely happy, but might be a little better

            • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

Don’t give me that, Pineda + dominance + win/Betances save most likely? Cmon

              • SuicidalMustacheMasher

If he has a typycal Betances outing I might back off just a bit

    • cxz

I think the rest day was just something they wanted to get in before the 20 games in 20 days stretch. A little rest could go a long way down the stretch. I don’t think it happens normally with him

    • Mustang

Rest him because they are not stupid and he has pitched well with extra days rest before.
Its almost like pulling him with a NO NO and too many pitches.
You let the season dictate what you do not ONE OUTING!

      • SweetSpot

I seem to remember someone arrogantly lecturing others earlier and I quote . . . “Winning shouldn’t take the back seat to anything!”

        • Mustang

Exactly and the season is a war not just one battle.
And when you have a GOOD PITCHER you save him to win the war.
When have a bad pitcher and good replacements you send his as to the pen.

          • SweetSpot

So, you agree then that “winning shouldn’t take a back seat to anything,” doesn’t apply to ‘everything.’ If you need to take a break to collect yourself, I’ll understand. :)

            • Mustang

Please with you its so easy.

By “winning” i mean the season not one game here or there . You’re a Yankees fan you should know that winning is define by rings.

              • SweetSpot

                OK then! :)

                • Mustang

                  Yes Sir,
Its a team with many issues the only thing that they can be counted on right now is their inconsistency but you go on its rather entertaining.
                  :)

            • Mustang

By break do you mean like the one you took after your little ‘winter doom sayers” avenger speech at the end of the 7 game winning streak.
Which was directly followed by the current losing streak.

        • Mustang

See the season is define by 7 game winning steaks in June or one game its define at the end. Then the victory lap can be done if that’s what your into.
          :)

  • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

    WOW

  • Andy

    Wow, Bour is slow

  • Mandy Stankiewicz

    Nice grab jones!

  • GPU

Wow, thats like getting thrown out at first slow.

  • https://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek/ Roadgeek Adam

    Nice work McCann

  • dave_8

Nice job Big Mike and Shrevey. Now score some fuckin runs. oops

  • HoopDreams

Jesus, he makes Tex and McCann look like Ellsbury

    • RetroRob

How often have we seen a ball roll all the way to the backstop and the runner still thrown out at first?

      • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

        Never

        • RetroRob

          Seriously.

  • Centaur Hips

Shreve has been awesome. Really stepped up.

  • Violet

Wil Myers out for a bit with wrist surgery – might the Padres be looking for OF help???

  • Andy

jack curry seems like a real straight shooter

    • mike carter

      Bob lorenz

    • RetroRob

He was a good addition to the team.

      • Andy

sweet lou was fun for a bit

        • RetroRob

Not sure what happened to him. I know he was very part time, but I thought he would still show up when they did some ST games and when they play Tampa since he lives down there. Either he decided he didn’t want to bother, or YES didn’t like how he mixed. They got rid of Tino pretty quickly for that reason.

  • Pete22

Beltrans RBI is the difference maker against a guy I thought they would really hammer at home.

    • dave_8

we should’ve. we let him off the hook.

    • Gregory Eckes

They did hammer him but could not get the hit at the right time 6 hits and 4 walks

  • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

    Eww, that’s Gas Can numbers

    • https://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek/ Roadgeek Adam

And he was a starter at one point. Somehow, your last name is Hand, you stink.

  • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

Marlins guy has Marlins guy children

    • RetroRob

      Sad. Break the cycle.

  • SuicidalMustacheMasher

Imagine if Hand was a switch pitcher like Venditte.. Then he would be Brad Hands and not just Hand! I’m sorry…

      • frogbogg

        Eww…….

  • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

    Gardyyy

  • SteveNj

    There ya go Gritt!

  • RetroRob

Takes Gardner speed to attempt that…and succeed.

  • mike carter

    Lead off double by garnder

    • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

      gardener is good

      • SuicidalMustacheMasher

        Never heard of that guy

  • SteveNj

Damn ichy still has that gun

    • https://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek/ Roadgeek Adam

He does. Beltran still has an A arm as well.

      • SteveNj

To bad his legs are a F- lol

        • https://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek/ Roadgeek Adam

          That’s the bad part.

  • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

    #Rispley

  • Gregory Eckes

    Good job

  • Andy

    Let’s go B-Mac

  • Y’s Guy

    job well done!

  • mike carter

    Mcann

    • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

      Mc

  • RetroRob

I assumed Gardner advanced, but it would be nice if they could confirm it during the play.

  • Andy

please walk McCann to get to Arod. Please.

    • https://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek/ Roadgeek Adam

      For the sake of 2998.

  • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

Lol @ walking McCann to pitch to A-Rod

    • SelfSatisfiedMustacheMasher

      Thanks asshole!

      • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

        fuck

  • OldYanksFan

Ichiro is very smart, yet he refuses to adjust his batting style. He can no longer beat out all the infield ground balls. He easily has the power to be a gap/HR hitter, yet he refuses. If he could post a .750 OPS, with his speed, D and arm, he could probably play another 2 years and get 3,000 hits easy.
    All that stretching pays off.

    • Andy

You know it’s 2-1 with a runner at third and 1 out right?

      • OldYanksFan

Not taking about that AB specifically, but just Ichiro in general.

  • mike carter

Save the home run a rod for 3000 hit

    • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

why save home run 3000 hit when get 2998 now

    • SuicidalMustacheMasher

Why not just homer all the way to 3k? You can never be too greedy! I’m still expecting the Yankees to win 125 games

    • Y’s Guy

      Three homers works for me.

  • Gregory Eckes

Now why would you swing at that?

  • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

    eww

  • Andy

    Gross

  • RetroRob

    HR upcoming for #2,998.

    • RetroRob

      …or a walk.

    Boooooooooooooooooo

  • http://riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Reach out and hit it anyway like Miggy.

    • Gregory Eckes

Has to be close enough to do that. But what a horrible job by McCann

  • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

    Guess I’m not going tomorrow

    • mike carter

      Why you most go

    • yankeefeminista

I’m going. He can get 3 off Latos and pen. Plus it’s Thurman Munson bobblehead day. ;)

      • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

Would be really annoying to head there tomorrow anyway, so hoping you end up disappointed :)

        • yankeefeminista

I worked my ass off this week so my sched would be freed up for the homestand and Alex’s quest for 3000.Just can’t likely go Saturday, but otherwise…I’m there

          • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

Hope you’ll see it live, Friday or Sunday :D

            • yankeefeminista

Ha, just saw this. Hopefully we both see history tonight. It would be a bitch to have to find tickets for tomorrow night and hard with my Saturday sched to even make first pitch. Kick ass tonight, Alex!

              • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

I mean I could easily go again, it’s just money. But shelling out another 30-40 dollars to go again will begin to get a bit ridiculous.

        • yankeefeminista

If that douche had thrown strikes my prediction would have been correct. Let’s hope the Verlander numbers continue. ????

          • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

I ended up going actually so this really ended up backfiring on me. Tonight’s the night! Going again!

    • SelfSatisfiedMustacheMasher

If we win, you are staying here to ride out the hot streak! You will be our good luck charm

      • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

        *Blushes*

    • Pete22

Could be an 18 inning extra inning game where Arod gets 4 more AB and 2 more hits tonight. Better lock in those tickets now

  • Violet

pretty bad job there by McCann

  • yankeefeminista

    Boo!

  • RetroRob

    Pinch hit Tex.

    • Andy

      But he is sleepy!

      • RetroRob

I do not agree with this move at all. Jones does not hit lefties, and yes you want to bring in the better defender.

        • Andy

          Yeah, it makes no sense.

  • Centaur Hips

    Got to PH Tex right?

  • Garreddardett Jones

All McCann had to do was stand there and leave it to Alex. Awful awful job.

  • https://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek/ Roadgeek Adam

    A-Rod’s OBP continues going up

    • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

.369 to start today. Was at .375 last AB I think

  • BigBlueAL

McCann has had a very good bounce-back season offensively but after that at-bat he should seriously think about retiring lol.

  • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

    pinch hit Teix holy shit

  • Y’s Guy

    Is Texeira hurt?

    • speedyjohn

      Maybe… Seems possible.

    • yankeefeminista

No, but he ate some gluten by accident, so he has to wait until it’s out of his system before he can play.

  • Gregory Eckes

I don’t agree with this. But let’s see what happens

  • No 2013 again

Get to 3-0 and take 3 awful swings

  • Yankees009

I don’t understand how you can spit on three outstanding curveballs to start the at bat but strike yourself out on that kind of junk. What kind of approach is that with runners on base? And why are you swinging on 3-0 when the guy is clearly nibbling?

  • No 2013 again

    Tex must be hurt

    • Gregory Eckes

Then why wouldn’t Joe say so at the beginning of the game

      • No 2013 again

Why didn’t he say it when Miller was hurt

    • SelfSatisfiedMustacheMasher

      No… And fuck off

  • 518forever

Nasty breaking ball by Mr. Hand

  • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

    Not a SB, defensive indifference

    • https://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek/ Roadgeek Adam

      They gave an SB anyway.

      • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

I was joking, SB all the way

        • https://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek/ Roadgeek Adam

Honestly, I wish they had tossed DI from the rulebook.

          • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

            agreed

      • Pete22

Depends on if the scorer has Arod on his DFS for cash lineup over at DraftsKings. A SB is worth 5 points. Similar play they ruled indifference and cost me money

  • speedyjohn

Either Tex is hurt or Girardi is saving him to pinch-hit for Mason Williams and move Jones to the OF.

  • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

    fat guy diving play lol

    • Pete22

Those are the easiest plays even though they look difficult

  • SteveNj

    Gotta be shitting me

  • mike carter

    Damn it fuck

  • SelfSatisfiedMustacheMasher

    Who said ARod was slow?!

  • 518forever

    Bouringgg!

  • Gregory Eckes

Again, Yankees have seen enough of the Marlins defense. They have stolen at least 4-5 hits in this series

  • SteveNj

How did that fat shit get to that

  • cxz

I can’t wait to move on to the next series and be done dealing with this IF. They’re so good, but I can’t enjoy it when they’re pulling it against us

    • mike carter

      I know

  • mike carter

    Ahhhh damn it

  • Y’s Guy

I gotta hand it to the fish’s defense in this series so far. That’s what I had been hoping to see out of these Yankees.
    Maybe I still will…

  • Violet

the liner by Jones will buy him another month

    • Y’s Guy

keep ripping those and you’ll get plenty of hits.

      • Violet

yeah but he is not ripping alot of those

  • SelfSatisfiedMustacheMasher

If he was skinny, he wouldn’t have caught that.. He weight pulled him down pretty quickly so he could get to hit.. Fuck the guy that invented gravity

  • Captain Clutch

Tex is obviously not healthy. Just an off day? Yeah just like it was just an off day for Beltran the other day and then we found out that he had a hamstring problem.

    • Y’s Guy

Probably right and not telling that to everyone was the right thing to do.

  • Garreddardett Jones

And now he’ll bring in Teixera for defensive purposes. I still can’t believe McCann just didn’t stand there and take the walk. He took the bat out of ALex’s hands.

  • Beauee

So why didn’t he PH Tex?

    • Violet

the binder says to rest Tex

      • Beauee

Fuck that. It’s a tight division, we need these close games.

        • Violet

how dare you question the binder and its hypocrisy in handling games

  • Centaur Hips

Arod with the SB, doing it all. Also screw you Bour.

  • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

    Shreve for 1 out? seriously?

    • Andy

      Very weird

    • Centaur Hips

      LOOGYED

    • Garreddardett Jones

Shreve is the 7th inning guy. He cannot throw a pitch in the 8th inning because Wilson is the 8th inning guy.

    • RetroRob

I’m guessing Wilson is the 8th inning guy. I didn’t think Girardi would go that extreme, but more mix and match.

  • Veteran presents

    Epic fail by this offense.

    • Veteran presents

Or I should just say by McCann

  • Violet

imagine a midnight coup where Beltran, Drew, and Jones are immediately rushed off the team and enter Flores OF/1B, Refs, and Pirela – imagine – imagine

    • Gregory Eckes

      Why do you hate Jones?

      • Violet

not professional enough – tired of the excuses – oh he does not enough ABs, when you are in your 30s they way he is – he needs to do a better job of taking advantage of his opportunities – he is just here for Tex 1b insurance – a few HRs in Seattle does not mitigate overall season so far – plus I would rather have Flores in that role as he can play OF better and has 1b experience

    • Veteran presents

      I don’t mind Jones.

    • Mandy Stankiewicz

I’m not convinced refs + Pirelli are going to improve this team. Jones has been ok as a bench role.
      Also, repost from below:

      Mason hit 319/397/795 in AAA
      Refs hit 279/355/754 in AAA
Why isn’t masons bat as hyped?

      • NYCORNERSTONE

        Pirelli’s A TIRE

  • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

I love how everyone ignores their fits of anger like a mother ignoring her screaming child having a temper tantrum

    • SweetSpot

Didi is nice and calm out there.

      • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

        Didi’s sexy as always

  • Tomcats4Ever

Hard to believe they only scored 5 runs in three games against the Marlins.

    • Gregory Eckes

And had a chance to win 2 of them

  • Centaur Hips

12 runners for the Yanks tonight but only 2 runs. #toofewHRs

    • Pete22

No HR. HR’s account for 45% of their runs

  • yanksgoyanks

Wilson always walks people, I think Shreve should be the 8th inning guy over Willy.

    • dave_8

Who comes in then with men on base that the starter left behind?

  • RetroRob

Betances hasn’t pitched much lately, so I can see him coming in here soon. I’d rather see a DP.

    • Andy

Was just gonna say let’s get a DP

  • Pete22

I always thought Ichiro could hit a bunch of HR here if he was so inclined

    • Andy

I can’t tell if this serious

      • Pete22

He is a beast in BP, has some serious power

      • Pete22

He is a beast in BP, has some serious power

  • SteveNj

    Come on Wilson

  • Centaur Hips

This bullpen has pretty bad command, especially Wilson. Almost always misses his spots and also walks too many batters.

    • Violet

that was his mo in Pittsburgh

  • Captain Clutch

Wilson is all over the place

  • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

    Dellin pls

  • Pete22

    Incredible shrinking strike zone

  • 518forever

    There we are

  • Captain Clutch

This bullpen is going to kill this team.

      And Dellin

This bullpen is going to kill this team.

    yayyyyy

  • yankeefeminista

Here comes Dellin to save the day.

  • SteveNj

    Shoulda left in Shreve!

    • Veteran presents

Should’ve scored that fucking run last inning.

Thanks a lot Brian Cashman for this wonderful bullpen

    • Alkaline

      Seriously?

      • OldYanksFan

Absolutely. Cashman is an asshole for injuring Miller.

      • OldYanksFan

Absolutely. Cashman is an asshole for injuring Miller.

    • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

Cause he’s supposed to find a replacement for an elite reliever

      • Gregory Eckes

        That’s his job.

        • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

          Okay

        • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

          Okay

        • Alkaline

Give him more than 8 days to find someone. Do you think other teams will give market value to any current replacement knowing the Yankees are in desperate need of one now?

        • Alkaline

        Astros, Orioles, Rays….

Thanks a lot Brian Cashman for this wonderful bullpen

  • OldYanksFan

ARod’s OBP in now 105 pts higher than his BA.
I’m sure he’s had some bad ABs, but I can’t remember any.
He is a clinic on how to approach an AB.
Patience, not going out of the zone, not trying to pull the ball, not trying to do too much with tough pitches,

On one hand, I do appreciate Girardi showing some faith in Jones.
You gotta manage people as well as numbers.
On the other hand…. Holy Shit!!!!
Not having Teix in there almost hurt us badly.

  • Beauee

Holy shit Joe…He brings in Teix NOW???

    • Centaur Hips

That is just inexcusable. That’s awful managing.

      • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

        Lol wtf

        • Centaur Hips

“I thought he could use the extra inning.” Seriously what reason is there? No sense.

        • Beauee

I am glad he brought Teix in for defense, but if you are willing to use him an inning later for D, why not PH him then? That’s really poor management.

  • yankeefeminista

    3…

  • Violet

Joe did everything he could to give away that inning – taking out Shreve, staying with Wilson and then doing a turnaround desperate to Betances a batter later – not subbing Tex for defense with Jones

    • Gregory Eckes

BUT NOTHING HAPPENED. And that’s all that will be remembered the next day

      • Violet

this time – we have the previous 5 out of 6 games where questionable moves were made and another losing streak to date

        • Gregory Eckes

If they wins this game it means nothing. Zero.

    • dalelama

      Better lucky than good.

      • Deep Thoughts

Would you both stop wasting my internet bandwidth. MLB.tv is cranky enough as it is.

    • Deep Thoughts

Joe saved Shreve for the next game, came within a great ice-cream cone catch on a screaming liner of having Jones knock in the 3rd run, and gave 35-yr-old Tex a full day off during a 20-in-20 stretch.

      Pretty shrewd managing.

  • mike carter

Tex will be at first now

    • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

chirs young at right fild two

  • Centaur Hips

That is a HUGE overturn. Would have hated if this went into extras or if Dellin unraveled and wasted Pineda’s start.

  • RetroRob

It’s still not too late to put Tex in at 1B in the 9th, and of course Young in RF. I believe it was a mistake (without knowing anything about Tex’s health at the moment, and there could be something more than we know despite his words), but if he made an error not bringing in Tex originally, he doesn’t have to compound it in the 9th.

    • Beauee

No I agree. He has to do what is best. What I am pissed about is the original error of not bringing him in to PH.

      • RetroRob

Yes. I usually can defend most moves, but that one is a mystery. Hopefully it doesn’t cost. Three more outs.

      • Gregory Eckes

That was questionable, but if they win it means nothing

        • Beauee

I think it still means something but whatever. Questionable calls like that one have a way of catching up to you.

  • Beauee

Joe has made some horrible moves this year…Not PHing Teix, and then bringing him on D an inning later? What the shit?

  • dalelama

Wow we got lucky. The replays were definitely inconclusive. Take them anyway you can….I guess.

    • http://riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa
      • dalelama

Thank you for proving my point, a blur isn’t conclusive but I will take it.

        • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

          dalelama – master troll

        • Deep Thoughts

          dude…

  • Since_77

Chris Young kills lefties, why isn’t he hitting now?

    • Beauee

So he can come in on Defense next inning.

      • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

Let the guys hit, fine, but not bringing in Teix for defense was retarded

        • Beauee

I agree that Teix should have been in for D, but he should have also been in to PH. Jones cannot hit lefties well. In a close game like this, you need to give your team every opportunity to win. Not to bring in Teix there is simply inexcusable. I could understand if he was injured, but he is obviously not because there he is playing D.

          • Beauee

Also, he brought in Teix way too late on D. Bring in him earlier if you are willing to do so. Just everything about that sequence was stupid.

            • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

              not coming in

              • Beauee

                Just saw that.

  • Gregory Eckes

All of the questionable moves Joe has made tonight go into the ether if they win the game. That’s the nature of the game.

    • Andy

Not sure what your point is by continuing to repeat this

      • Gregory Eckes

Just another way of saying, don’t bother complaining. Complaining about victories is pointless.

        • Andy

Not if he keeps making the same mistakes

          • Gregory Eckes

If he keeps winning, he can bat Drew cleanup and he will get a pass.

    • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

      thanks x5

    • Violet

not really – a week ago Joe brought in Betances in a comfortable lead game against the Nats and paniced by taking Shreve out – the next day – with Betances unavailable – pen blows the game with a Taylor 2 run HR – questionable moves have implications games later too

      • Gregory Eckes

Wrong. Betances was the closer that day because Miller got hurt. Use your head

      • Deep Thoughts

  • bluedj88

  • Y’s Guy

Replay has been great so far. Not perfect but what an improvement in the game!

  • HoopDreams

Why is everyone saying Tex is coming in? I saw him on the bench rocking a hoodie.

  • RetroRob

Yes, the second one shows there was contact, and matching it with the first angle on the replay is why I believe he was out.

  • OldYanksFan

Baseball is so much more enjoyable to watch now that they use instant replay.

    • Pete22

There are been a lot of replays across the league this year where a call that should be overturned is not, prompting a lot of complaints by managers and players. This was a fortunate occurrence. Maybe having these guys based in NY pays off. LOL

          • https://youtu.be/alYXF7a9N3U Memory Bread

Lots of posts flooded up this thread.

            • Alkaline

              Lol

        • chicken_stanley

          Are there flying cars yet?

  • mike carter

    Come on batances

  • Pete22

Rather face Mathis than Bour anyways

  • Gregory Eckes

Who remembers Mathis from the 09 ALCS?

    • https://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek/ Roadgeek Adam

Who remembers Mathis from the ’12 Jays, like Hechy, just annoying.

  • Beauee

This is an auto win with Mathis up. Great win!

  • Gregory Eckes

    There we go

  • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

    Jus’ Dealin’

  • Andy

Thank god. If this turned into a loss, it would have been devastating

  • Mandy Stankiewicz

    “Start spreading the news”

  • RetroRob

Toughly fought win. Need those. The Yankees get a blow-out win tomorrow.

  • yankeefeminista

    K There it is!

  • HoopDreams

    Big Mike gets his win.

  • Y’s Guy

    Whew!

  • cxz
  • dalelama

    Thank you baseball Gods.

  • GPU

    A win is a win:)

    • RetroRob

2-1 wins are good wins, but they are all good wins.

  • yanksgoyanks

    I guess Shreve closes tomorrow.

    • SelfSatisfiedMustacheMasher

Just blow them out tomorrow! Problem solved

  • mike carter

Ballgame over yankees theeeeeeee yankees win

  • OldYanksFan

Betances with a 0.26 ERA. He’s going to the ASG.

    • Pete22

      I would rather he rests

      • OldYanksFan

        Me too.

  • Gregory Eckes

So Toronto Baltimore and the Yankees win. The Rays are about to win.

    Gee, who’s missing…..

  • CashmanNinja

I was just thinking…imagine the contract Betances would get if he were to hit the market. Just for a second think how valuable he is and what an absolute *steal* we wound up with.

    • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

      I say same as D-Rob

      • Centaur Hips

Probably more. Younger and throws harder.

        • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

It’s tough, but he’s still a closer and you never know with relievers. 5/50 is fair.

          • Centaur Hips

Maybe it’s just me but I’d give him $15M AAV (max) if he hit the open market right now.

            • SelfSatisfiedMustacheMasher

Damn.. 15 AAV? Thats too much for a reliever if you ask me..

              • Centaur Hips

That’s as I high as I would go for one. If anyone’s earned it it’s Dellin.

            • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

              I’d do 4/60

    • RetroRob

He’s awesome, but teams will only go to a certain $$ limit on closers. And a reminder when fans get upset with the progress of players in the minors, many wanted Dellin cut.

      • renzostew

I remember a lot of people gave up on Betances and I never thought he would get to where he is now.Betance was close to 25/26 years old before everything clicked.

        • RetroRob

Anyone who said they expected Betances to turn into what he has is lying. I was hoping he might turn into a serviceable reliever after all the issues he had as a starter. That was his peak to me. That said, he serves as a reminder (as does Heathcott and Williams) that players who have talent deserve a much longer leash.

    • Pete22

You can say that about any pre-arb player who is 2+ WAR. Betances might get 12 million a year on the open market, thats the suplus value teams shoot for and why they spend about 20 million per homegrown player to acquire and develop them.

  • Garreddardett Jones

I thought this was a must win for the pysche of the ballclub and they won it. I think they’re now 5-0 in these must win type games this season. Start a win streak and take advantage of the home field.

  • HoopDreams

Toronto, Tampa and BMore won, Boston also does their part.

    • Deep Thoughts

      AL Least suXX

  • Centaur Hips

I’m still laughing at that pitch stanton swung at. Looked silly.

    • Mandy Stankiewicz

      Down looking; even more ridic.

    • renzostew

He would boost this organization like we haven’t seen since the late ninties if he played in PINSTRIPES.

      • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

I sure love me some PINSTRIPS

  • Pete22

Didn’t gain any ground except against the Red Sox, but did not lose any either. Offense needs to pick it up though.

Arod 3000 watch picking up steam. Looks like a lock against the Tigers

    • https://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek/ Roadgeek Adam

Could even be tomorrow. A 3 hit game is not out of the question.

      • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

I might just end up going thursday-saturday

  • http://riveraveblues.com/ Mick

I would try Shreve in the 8th. I don’t remember the last man he let on base.
Wilson would have the 7th. If he’s wild ,Shreve comes in early.

  • Pkyankfan69

    Scissor Me Timbers…. We won!!!!

    • chicken_stanley

      Lol. Nice gif last night

  • Aaron Juez

I can’t believe Jeff Mathis is still in the league.

    • Pete22

I can’t believe he was allowed to hit in that situation

      • Deep Thoughts

        ..

    • renzostew

Me too I forgot all about him.I remember with the Angels he was a bad hitter but got some big hits against the Yanks.

  • http://riveraveblues.com/ Mick

Is that extra inning of rest that important for Tex.? Don’t get the move.

    • http://riveraveblues.com/ Mick

      OK. Stiff neck.

  • Deep Thoughts

Play (and Player) of the Game: Garrett Jones, on both sides of the ball.

    • http://riveraveblues.com/ Mick

      Re-Play play of the Day.

  • yankeefeminista

Teix has a stiff neck. Joe G hopes he’ll play tomorrow.

    • Deep Thoughts

dalelama had something stiff as well, when we all thought the score was 2-2.

  • Captain Clutch

When the yanks are winning and Girardi doesn’t bring in one of his big guys there is always some sort of an injury.

    • Deep Thoughts

      Not true, he’s a self-sabotaging moron, remember?

      Stiff neck

  • SelfSatisfiedMustacheMasher

Didi! I changed my avatar just for you! I combined the two things you love the most, A-Rod and Didi into one handsome human being!

    • HoopDreams

      Kinda looks like Eddie Murphy.

      • SelfSatisfiedMustacheMasher

Look at the bigger picture here! If you aren’t a bit turned on for atleast 4 hours, you need to see a doctor

    • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

      fuck off he’s mine

      • SelfSatisfiedMustacheMasher

I did us all a favor by morphing him into A-Rod! I tried with McCann and the Hamburglar, but that didn’t work, so this was my second choice

        • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

          Show me this site

          • SelfSatisfiedMustacheMasher

            Its photoshop I’m using

            • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

              hacks

  • Centaur Hips

Kris Bryant grand slam. 17-0 Cubs.

  • blake

    Thank goodness for replay right….

Pineda’s stuff and command was so much more crisp tonight on normal rest ….they really needed him tonight and he stepped up

  • just_add_bacon7

Fun fact: The Red Sox have given up the most runs in all of MLB.

    • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

“Just let that offense do it’s job and they got a chance”

      • Some Asshole

        lawlz

    • blake

      But look at that offense

    • SelfSatisfiedMustacheMasher

      Impossible!! They have Joe Kelly

    • GPU

And if Oakland wins they’ll have the worst record in the AL!

  • Tony Wilson

Can go no worse than 5-2 on this home stand, hoping for 6 of these next 7

  • Sam Palazzo

Didn’t catch most of the game but looks like we escaped with a W and that’s all that matters. Drink for Instant Replay!

    • dalelama

Lady Luck smiled on us today.

    • JimK

Instant replay is, IMO, beginning to look like a home field interpretation; I thought Didi was safe in the cloud of dust replay, but I thought tonight’s replay challenge was inconclusive at best.

  • OldYanksFan

Damn…. Kris Bryant is the real deal.
And I didn’t realize how big he is: 6”5, 215
Has 7 HR and a .878 OPS in his first 200 AB, at 23 yrs old.

    • Some Asshole

Man, I wouldn’t want to be the asshole that….

Oh wait. I am that asshole. Win! For once.
