DotF: Refsnyder, Flores double in Triple-A loss

Rotation help should be priority, but improving bullpen is a good Plan B

Some roster moves, via Chad Jennings: 2B Rob Refsnyder reported to Triple-A Scranton, so RHP Danny Burawa was demoted to Double-A Trenton to clear a roster spot. Ouch. Also, RHP Eric Ruth was returned to Trenton following yesterday’s spot start and RHP Johnny Barbato has been promoted to Triple-A.

Triple-A Scranton (3-2 loss to Indianapolis, walk-off style)

  • CF Ben Gamel: 2-5, 1 R, 1 2B
  • RF Jose Pirela: 0-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 SB — went 13-for-25 (.520) during his little six-game hit streak
  • LF Ramon Flores: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 E (both fielding) — first two errors of the season
  • 2B Rob Refsnyder: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K — back with a vengeance
  • DH Greg Bird: 2-3, 1 BB
  • RHP Kyle Davies: 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 4 K, 6/2 GB/FB — 56 of 96 pitches were strikes (58%)
  • RHP Chris Martin: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 3/1 GB/FB — 12 of 21 pitches were strikes (57%) … ten straight scoreless inning since the six-run, 1.2-inning disaster last month
  • RHP Nick Goody: 1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 0/1 GB/FB — 18 of 30 pitches were strikes (60%)

Double-A Trenton (3-2 loss to Portland in ten innings, walk-off style)

  • CF Jake Cave: 1-4, 1 RBI, 2 K
  • RF Mark Payton: 0-4, 2 K
  • 2B Tony Renda: 2-4
  • RHP Kyle Haynes: 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 6/4 GB/FB — 53 of 88 pitches were strikes (60%)
  • LHP Matt Tracy: 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 1/2 GB/FB — 29 of 48 pitches were strikes (60%) … quality long relief right there
  • RHP Mark Montgomery: 0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 WP, 2/0 GB/FB — ten of 15 pitches were strikes

High-A Tampa Game One (5-2 loss to Brevard County in seven innings) makeup of yesterday’s rainout

  • SS Tyler Wade: 1-3, 1 SB — has hits in eleven of his last 12 games
  • 2B Abi Avelino: 0-3, 3 K — rough game
  • CF Dustin Fowler: 1-3, 1 R
  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 1-3
  • RHP Gabe Encinas: 3.2 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 1 WP, 3/5 GB/FB — 79/35 K/BB in 67.2 innings this year

High-A Tampa Game Two (3-2 loss to Brevard County in seven innings)

  • SS Abi Avelino: 1-4, 1 R, 1 SB — ranks sixth in the minors with 38 steals
  • CF Dustin Fowler: 0-3, 1 RBI
  • DH Miguel Andujar: 2-3 — 16-for-50 (.320) in his last 14 games
  • LHP Eric Wooten: 4 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, 1 HB, 6/0 GB/FB

Low-A Charleston had a scheduled off-day.

Short Season Staten Island (5-4 loss to Mahoning Valley in ten innings, walk-off style)

  • SS Kyle Holder: 0-4, 1 BB, 1 K
  • RF Jhalan Jackson: 2-5, 1 R, 2 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K — ten doubles, four homers, six singles
  • 3B Drew Bridges: 0-5, 3 K
  • 2B Brandon Wagner: 0-4, 2 K
  • RHP Domingo Acevedo: 1.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 WP, 2/2 GB/FB — 22 of 38 pitches were strikes (58%) … 12/5 K/BB in 13 innings for the hard-throwing 21-year-old
  • RHP Will Carter: 3 IP, zeroes, 1 K, 5/0 GB/FB — 24 of 32 pitches were strikes (75%) … saw him pitching against Brooklyn on SNY last week and he was throwing 95 mph sinkers

Rookie level Pulaski (5-2 loss to Kingsport)

  • CF Carlos Vidal: 1-5 — got picked off first
  • 2B Gosuke Katoh: 1-4, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 E (fielding)
  • RHP Adonis Rosa: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 7/3 GB/FB

Rookie level GCL Yanks1 were rained out. They’re going to make the game up as part of a doubleheader on August 5th.

Rookie level GCL Yanks2 (3-0 loss to GCL Phillies)

  • SS Yancarlos Baez: 0-4
  • 2B Yonauris Rodriguez: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 K
  • DH Isiah Gilliam: 0-2, 1 BB — six walks and four strikeouts in eleven games so far
  • RHP Daris Vargas: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HB, 8/2 GB/FB
  • RHP Claudio Custodio: 1 IP, zeroes, 2 K, 1/0 GB/FB — 9/6 K/BB in 9.2 innings for the recently converted infielder
