Game Nine: Sevy for the Sweep
Sweep! Severino dominates, Hicks goes deep twice in 3-2 win over Rays

In case you missed it earlier, RHP James Kaprielian will indeed undergo Tommy John surgery. That stinks. He’ll have the procedure next Tuesday. See you next summer, Kap.

Triple-A Scranton (2-1 win over Lehigh Valley, walk-off style)

  • SS Tyler Wade: 1-4, 1 R
  • DH Clint Frazier: 0-4, 1 RBI
  • RF Rob Refsnyder: 2-3, 1 R, 2 RBI — had been 1-for-16 (.063) coming into this game
  • CF Mason Williams: 2-4, 1 2B — two two-hit games and four no-hit games on the young season
  • 1B Ji-Man Choi: 2-3, 1 RBI — walk-off sac fly
  • LHP Caleb Smith: 5 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, 4/2 GB/FB — 44 of 64 pitches were strikes (69%) … second career Triple-A appearance … he’s making the spot start because Johnny Barbato was lined up to pitch today, but he’s currently in DFA limbo
  • LHP Joe Mantiply: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1/3 GB/FB — 23 of 33 pitches were strikes (70%) … the Yankees stretch just about everyone out to multiple innings in the minors, even the left-on-left matchup guys
  • LHP Chasen Shreve: 1 IP, zeroes, 2 K, 1/0 GB/FB — ten of 16 pitches were strikes (63%)

Double-A Trenton (6-4 win over Portland)

  • CF Rashad Crawford: 1-4, 1 BB, 1 K
  • SS Gleyber Torres: 1-4, 1 K — has a hit in six of seven games so far
  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 1-3, 1 R, 1 K, 1 E (fielding) — three errors in six games at third base … he looked a little shaky in the field in Spring Training too, so he’s got some things to work on defensively
  • RF Billy McKinney: 1-3, 1 R, 1 3B, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K — he has four hits so far this season: one single, one double, one triple, and one home run
  • C Jorge Saez: 2-3, 1 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K — nice game for the minor league Rule 5 Draft pick
  • RHP Chance Adams: 5.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 K, 1 HB, 5/3 GB/FB — 57 of 94 pitches were strikes (61%) … allowed his first hit to the leadoff hitter in the fifth inning, so including his first start, he opened his season with 9.2 hitless innings
  • RHP Matt Wotherspoon: 2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 WP, 1 Balk, 3/0 GB/FB — 19 of 32 pitches were strikes (59%)

High-A Tampa Game One (4-1 loss to Bradenton in seven innings) this was a scheduled doubleheader, they’re not making anything up

  • CF Jorge Mateo: 1-3 — that’s three straight games in center field
  • SS Kyle Holder: 0-3, 1 K
  • LF Trey Amburgey & RF Jhalan Jackson: both 0-3 — Jackson struck out twice
  • 2B Nick Solak: 2-2, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 SB — started the season 1-for-17 (.059), but is 6-for-12 since
  • 3B Abi Avelino: 0-2
  • RHP Domingo Acevedo: 5.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 9 K, 3/2 GB/FB — 57 of 86 pitches were strikes (66%), plus he picked two runners off first base … started the game with four scoreless innings before things unraveled

High-A Tampa Game Two (2-1 win over Bradenton in eight innings, walk-off style)

  • SS Jorge Mateo: 1-3, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 SB — I wonder how many players have played center field in the first game of a doubleheader and shortstop in the second? … that nine steals in eight games … he didn’t steal his ninth base until his 28th game last year
  • DH Kyle Holder: 0-4, 1 K — now 1-for-30 (.033) on the season, but the one is a home run
  • CF Trey Amburgey: 1-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB — walk-off single
  • 2B Nick Solak: 0-2, 1 BB, 1 K
  • RF Jhalan Jackson: 1-3
  • LF Austin Aune: 1-3, 2 K
  • RHP Kyle Haynes: 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 3/3 GB/FB — 35 of 54 pitches were strikes (65%)

Low-A Charleston (13-8 win over Rome)

  • 2B Hoy Jun Park: 4-6, 3 R, 1 2B, 3 RBI, 1 SB — started the season 1-for-9 (.111) and is now 10-for-22 (.455) since
  • SS Diego Castillo: 3-6, 2 R, 1 K, 2 E (fielding, throwing) — 19-year-old is 10-for-29 (.345) with one strikeout in seven games … yes, he struck out for the first time tonight
  • DH Blake Rutherford: 0-3, 2 R, 3 BB, 1 SB — seven strikeouts and eight walks in seven games
  • 3B Angel Aguilar: 3-6, 1 R, 1 2B, 4 RBI, 2 K — 8-for-14 (.571) in his last three games
  • CF Estevan Florial: 1-4, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 K
  • C Donny Sands: 0-6, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K
  • RF Isiah Gilliam: 1-4, 1 R, 2 BB
  • RHP Freicer Perez: 2 IP, 5 H, 7 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 HB, 1 Balk, 6/0 GB/FB, 1 E (throwing) — 28 of 48 pitches were strikes (58%)
  • LHP Phil Diehl: 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K, 1 HB, 2/3 GB/FB — 50 of 71 pitches were strikes (70%), plus he picked a runner off first … very nice long relief work for last year’s 27th round pick
