DotF: Amburgey’s big game helps Trenton clinch playoff spot

August 26, 2018 by Mike Leave a Comment

Game 130: Sevy for the Sweep
Yankees 5, Orioles 3: Fourth win in three days for the sweep

RHP Chance Adams has been moved to the bullpen, the team announced. He’s not closing in on an innings limit — Adams has thrown 113.1 innings this year after 150.1 innings last year — so I assume the Yankees are preparing him for a bullpen role as a September call-up. Not as exciting as LHP Justus Sheffield moving to the bullpen for a big league role, but it’s the same idea.

Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (5-3 loss to Lehigh Valley)

  • LF Tyler Wade: 1-2, 1 R, 1 RBI, 2 BB — he’s been on base 18 times in his last ten games
  • SS Gio Urshela: 2-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI — hitting .358/.385/.552 with an 11.4% strikeout rate in his last 18 games now
  • 1B Ryan McBroom: 0-4, 2 K
  • DH Mike Ford: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 BB
  • RHP Raynel Espinal: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 K, 1 WP — 31 of 50 pitches were strikes … 3.20 ERA and 90/26 K/BB in 64.2 innings … career reliever made a few spot starts earlier this year, and it looks like he’ll make some more with RHP Chance Adams now in the bullpen
  • LHP Stephen Tarpley: 2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1/1 GB/FB — 22 of 34 pitches were strikes (65%)
  • RHP Chance Adams: 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 HR, 1 HB, 0/2 GB/FB — 25 of 38 pitches were strikes (66%) … like LHP Justus Sheffield, Adams allowed one run in two innings in his first outing since the move to the bullpen

Double-A Trenton Thunder (8-3 win over Hartford) the win clinches a postseason spot … they’ll play New Hampshire (Blue Jays) in the first round … Trenton is two games back of New Hampshire in the division and thus two games back of having home field advantage in their postseason series

  • C Chris Rabago: 0-5, 1 K
  • 1B-3B Gosuke Katoh: 1-5, 2 K, 1 CS
  • LF Trey Amburgey: 3-4, 2 R, 1 HBP — 8-for-14 (.571) in his last three games
  • RF Rashad Crawford: 2-5, 2 R, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 2 K
  • RHP Nick Nelson: 4 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 1 HR, 1 WP, 4/4 GB/FB — 60 of 98 pitches were strikes (61%) … back up here after making a spot start for Trenton last month … Nelson might be up here for the rest of the season, which at this point is one more regular season start plus the postseason
  • LHP Phil Diehl: 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 1 HR, 2/2 GB/FB — 25 of 32 pitches were strikes (78%) … 2.60 ERA and 104/22 K/BB in 72.2 innings … he’s the system’s first full-time reliever to strike out 100+ batters since Jonathan Holder (101) and Gio Gallegos (106) in 2016

High-A Tampa Tarpons (7-5 win over Daytona in ten innings)

  • CF Estevan Florial: 1-5, 1 R, 1RBI, 1 K, 1 SB — had been unsuccessful in his last four steal attempts … now 14-for-24 (58%) in steal attempts overall and 9-for-19 (47%) with Tampa
  • 2B Diego Castillo: 1-5, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 E (fielding)
  • RF Isiah Gilliam: 2-4, 1 R, 2 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K — first multi-extra-base hit game since July 24th and his fourth of the season overall
  • SS Hoy Jun Park: 1-4, 1 R, 1 BB
  • DH Steven Sensley: 1-5, 1 K
  • RHP Garrett Whitlock: 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 3 K, 6/0 GB/FB — 29 of 62 pitches were strikes (47%) … 32/18 K/BB in his last seven starts and 35.1 innings … 89/23 K/BB in his first 16 starts and 95.1 innings
  • LHP Reiver Sanmartin: 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, 10/2 GB/FB — 54 of 84 pitches were strikes (64%) … he’s now pitched for Staten Island, Tampa, Charleston, and Trenton this season … 53/4 K/BB and 55.7% ground ball rate in 60.1 total innings … the Yankees got him from the Rangers in a minor trade for Ronald Herrera over the winter

Low-A Charleston RiverDogs (5-0 loss to Greenville)

  • DH Oswaldo Cabrera: 0-4
  • 1B Dermis Garcia: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 K, 1 E (fielding) — .327/.403/.472 in his last 14 games, so he’s finishing strong
  • SS Wilkerman Garcia: 0-3
  • RHP Nolan Martinez: 6 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 1 WP, 4/8 GB/FB — 53 of 88 pitches were strikes (60%) … 39/21 K/BB in 56.1 innings overall and 4/7 K/BB in his last two starts and 9.1 innings
  • RHP Austin DeCarr: 3 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 5/2 GB/FB — 33 of 50 pitches were strikes

Short Season Staten Island Yankees (2-0 loss to Hudson Valley)

  • SS Eduardo Torrealba: 0-4, 1 E (fielding)
  • 3B Kyle Gray: 0-3, 1 K
  • LF Canaan Smith: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K
  • RHP Matt Sauer: 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 WP, 6/7 GB/FB — 50 of 78 pitches were strikes (64%) … 16.9 K% and 6.1 BB% in 61.2 innings … glad the walks are so low and surprised the strikeouts aren’t higher

Rookie Pulaski Yankees (9-4 win over Bluefield)

  • CF Isaiah Pasteur: 2-5, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K
  • 2B Ezequiel Duran: 1-5, 1 R, 2 K — had been in an 0-for-15 skid
  • RF Anthony Garcia: 0-3, 2 R, 2 BB
  • DH Mickey Gasper: 2-4, 2 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB — this year’s 27th rounder has nine homers and more walks (28) than strikeouts (19) in 40 pro games … he’s also a four-year college guy who turns 23 in October and is beating up on rookie ball pitchers, so yeah
  • 3B Nelson Gomez: 4-5, 3 R, 2 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K
  • C Hemmanuel Rosario: 0-4, 2 K — up here to finish the season after hitting .149/.229/.207 in 29 games in the GCL
  • RHP Nelvin Correa: 5.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 1 WP, 5/6 GB/FB, 1 E (pickoff) — 49 of 80 pitches were strikes (61%), plus he picked a runner off second

The Rookie GCL Yankees East finished their season yesterday. They went 19-35 and did not qualify for the postseason.

The season is over for the Rookie GCL Yankees West. They went 25-27 and did not qualify for the postseason.
