Game 112: Just Win
Cervelli won't have surgery for stress reaction in elbow

Brian Cashman told Andy McCullough he doesn’t expected LHP Vidal Nuno to return this season. That must be a pretty serious groin injury, huh? The Yankees got lucky he got hurt right after he got sent down. If he was on the MLB DL rather than the Triple-A DL, he’d be collecting a fat big league paycheck and accruing service time.

In other news, C Gary Sanchez was one of several prospects labeled “disappointing” by Keith Law (subs. req’d). “I do think his raw power will emerge more now that he’s out of Tampa, but he’ll need to show more energy behind the plate, where his receiving lags behind his throwing, and more discipline at the plate to fulfill his All-Star promise,” he wrote.

Triple-A Scranton Game One (7-6 win over Syracuse in 13 innings, walk-off style) completion of the July 12th game, which was suspended due to rain in the 12th inning

  • C J.R. Murphy: 2-6, 1 R, 3 K, 1 PB, 1 E (throwing) — picked a runner off second with a snap throw
  • RF Fernando Martinez: 3-5, 1 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI — played in the original game … he’s both on the DL and serving a 50-game suspension right now
  • 3B David Adams: 2-3, 1 R, 2 BB, 1 K — played the original game
  • LHP David Huff: 5.1 IP, 12 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 1 HB, 2/6 GB/FB — 75 of 106 pitches were strikes (71%) … started the original game
  • RHP Mark Montgomery: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1/3 GB/FB — 23 of 36 pitches were strikes (64%) … was the only guy to actually pitch in the game today

Triple-A Scranton Game Two (3-2 loss to Syracuse)

  • CF Melky Mesa: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI
  • C J.R. Murphy: 0-4, 1 K — he only caught two innings in the first game, so might as well run him back out there for the second game as well
  • DH Randy Ruiz: 3-4
  • 3B Ronnie Mustelier: 0-4, 1 K
  • LHP David Huff: 5 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, 1 HB, 3/3 GB/FB — 63 of 90 pitches were strikes (70%) … nine runs in 10.1 innings today (* technically)

Double-A Trenton (3-2 loss to Erie, walk-off style)

  • LF Ramon Flores: 2-4, 1 R, 1 K — 14 hits in his last 42 at-bats (.333), so hopefully he’s coming around a bit and can finish strong
  • CF Slade Heathcott: 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI — 8-for-26 (.308) with four doubles and a homer during his little seven-game hitting streak
  • C Gary Sanchez: 1-2, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB — two games at this level, two doubles
  • LHP Nik Turley: 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 6/4 GB/FB — 50 of 95 pitches were strikes (53%) … picked a runner off first … 117/59 K/BB in 117 innings this year after 117/45 K/BB in 117 innings last year
  • RHP David Herndon: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 3/1 GB/FB — 18 of 31 pitches were strikes (58%)
  • RHP Diego Moreno: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 1 WP, 0/1 GB/FB — 16 of 22 pitches were strikes

High-A Tampa had a scheduled off-day.

Low-A Charleston (1-0 loss to Savannah)

  • CF Jake Cave & SS Cito Culver: both 1-4 — Culver struck out
  • 2B Angelo Gumbs & 1B Greg Bird: both 0-4, 1 K
  • RHP Brett Gerritse: 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, 7/4 GB/FB — 41/13 K/BB in his last 39 innings

Short Season Staten Island (7-3 loss to State College)

  • LF Michael O’Neill: 0-4, 1 BB, 3 K — 60/8 K/BB in 41 games
  • 3B Eric Jagielo: 1-4, 1 K
  • CF Brandon Thomas: 0-3, 1 BB, 2 K
  • RHP Dillon McNamara: 2 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 1 WP, 3/0 GB/FB — 20/13 K/BB in 24 innings

Rookie GCL Yanks1 (6-2 loss to GCL Astros)

  • SS Tyler Wade & LF Dustin Fowler: both 0-4 — Wade struck out once, Fowler thrice
  • 3B Chris Tamarez: 0-2, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 HBP
  • 2B Gosuke Katoh: 1-4, 1 K
  • RF Austin Aune: 0-4, 1 K
  • RHP Dallas Martinez: 3.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 2 WP, 6/1 GB/FB — 14/3 K/BB in 17.1 innings for the 18-year-old

Rookie GCL Yanks2 (8-1 win over GCL Blue Jays)

  • SS Abi Avelino: 1-4, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K — got picked off first … only one hit? smh
  • DH Luis Torrens: 2-5, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K
  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 1-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 HBP, 1 E (fielding)
  • RHP Jordan Cote: 5 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 10/1 GB/FB — has allowed an earned run in his one of his eight appearances this year
