Game 147: A word on the rivalry

By Benjamin Kabak

Blah blah blah Red Sox. Blah blah blah rivalry. Blah blah blah too much media coverage. Blah blah blah AL East. Blah blah blah Yankees. Blah blah blah sweep. Blah blah blah first place.

That being said, here are the lineups.

26 World Championships
Johnny Damon DH
Derek Jeter SS
Bobby Abreu RF
Alex Rodriguex 3B
Jorge Posada C
Hideki Matsui LF
Jason Giambi 1B
Robinson Cano 2B
Melky Cabrera CF
Andy Pettitte P

6 World Championships
Julio Lugo SS
Dustin Pedroia 2B
David Ortiz DH
Mike Lowell 3B
Kevin Youkilis 1B
J.D. Drew RF
Jason Varitek C
Bobby Kielty LF
Coco Crisp CF
Daisuke Matsuzaka P

Against the Yankees this season, Matsuzaka is 2-1 with a 6.98. In 19 IP, have managed 19 hits and 15 ER against the Red Sox’s import. Let’s see how tonight goes.

Jeter, in a bad slump and hitting what must be the quietest .280 since the All Star break, is 4 for 9 off Dice-K with 2 HR. A good game from Derek would be excellent. Here we go.

Mike A. says:

Heh, the first paragraph of this post might be the most intelligent thing we’ve ever written on this blog.

tony from the bronx says:

if a-rod was having the year jeter is having he would be hung form the #4 train
jeter never gets called for his less then good play this year he leads the leauge in double plays has only 61 rbi and is in the top 3 in errors also he seems to be swinging at the 1st pitch a lot he must be hurt torre should sit him for a few days to see if it helps him we need jeter to play much better to win in the playoffs

Michael T says:

Jeter is pretty much playing “to the back of his baseball card” with a .388 2007 OBP vs. .388 career. His power is down a bit with slg % at .431 vs .461 career. But, it is compunded by:

- range is even worse than ever, particularly to the left

- fewer stolen bases, and bad success rate

- many GIDPs, which always seem to snuff out early rallies or come in big spots

I have seen some pretty respectable fielding analysis that says he will cost the Yankees 30 runs this year vs. a league average defensive shortstop. And he isn’t making up that many runs on offense with a .819 OPS

If this isn’t injury related, he needs top show some real leadership/teamwork and start finding another position. The last thing we need with 3 kids on the pitching staff is to give the opposition and extra 100+ outs per year.

yankz says:

is it the cool thing now to compare arod to jeter because anyone with half a mind would know that arods worst seasons offensively are better than jeters best no shit if arod was having this season people would be down on him can you imagine your best slugger hitting only 9 HR they are completely different players and typing with no punctuation is FUN!!! LOLZ

yankz says:

In all seriousness, Jeter is almost certainly injured. We know for a fact the knee is bothering him, and there’s probably something else. He should be benched, but won’t be.

Mike A. says:

$100 million bucks for an 88 mph fastball? What a joke.

Mike A. says:

Wow, so he almost hits Jeter in the head, and now he plunks A-Rod. Make’em pay Jorge.

Small sample size and all that, but Jeter isn’t the only guy slumping at the plate this month. Hope you don’t mind me copying my post from YB.

W Betemit .850
J Damon .758
R Cano .652 (a ground ball machine this month)
J Giambi.580
M Cabrera .552 (GB ratio over 1.5)
D Jeter .485 (wow)
H Matsui .454 (bigger wow)

Mike A. says:

Wow, tells you how important Boston thinks this game is if they’re cutting the man off at home in the 1st inning.

cjc says:
Mike A. says:

I know, Dice-K looks like shit.

Mike A. says:

It hit Giambi in a bad spot, right in the mitt.

Bah you meatball.

Joe says:

Alan Horne is pretty wild tonight 4-0 in the second.

Mike A. says:

Yeah, never fun to give up 4 ER in the first inning of your last start of the year.

cjc says:

this is definitly the worst I have seen Matsuzaka all season and this team can’t get anything to fall dare I say typical

Joe says:

I kind of miss Pedro Martinez, he was a character, let’s bring him back.

cjc says:

jeters hand disagrees

cjc says:

can someone tell me what the actual strikezone is

floating

Joe says:

See, Martinez, he was irritating, but said hilarious stuff, like the whole thing about hitting Babe Ruth in the ass. Now Schilling, Youk, there’s nothing to respect about these guys, so getting beat makes me angry.

cjc says:

sending ortiz that was a gift

Joe says:

What a throw by Melky, right on the money. By the way if your David Ortiz and Jorge Posada is Jorge Posada, don’t you run the guy over. Why is David Ortiz trying to slide under Jorge Posada?

cjc says:

did they leave the gloves in toronto

with the terrible pitching from both sides and this disgraceful defense (melky not included) this is ordering on unwatchable and still its only 2-0

cjc says:

argg meant bordering stupid laptop

Ben K. says:

Give Giambi a Gold Glove. Has the first base love affair faded yet?

Joe says:

You can’t blame Giambi, the guy can’t play first base, he knows, we know. I think there’s someone else in there who is supposed to know, but… I’m sure it will come to me.

Mike A. says:

And just like that, everything is nice and rosey.

cjc says:

woohoo sui and pedroia with the cannon

Mike A. says:

Now make up for that horrible 7-run error Giambi! ;)

cjc says:

slllllllllloooooooooooooowwwwwwww

cjc says:

hmmmmmm i figured with an era mid 4 that dice k mania would have died a bit

Mike A. says:

Jimminy Kimmell. You can tell Robbie & Melky are young, they’re swinging at anything withing 10 inches of the plate.

cjc says:

I was thinking the same thing even with meh stuff he schools them

damn melky would you friggin stop sliding into first jesus wtf

Joe says:

Melky will stop sliding into first when he gets benched in the middle of the game for doing it.

cjc says:

ok I’ve already had enough of ellsbury

cjc says:

boy Andy has nothing tonight is he on extra rest?

Mike A. says:

You know what really grinds my gears? When shortstops or second basemen make a swipe tag on a SB attempt, then look at the ump for the call. Follow the damn player stealing the base, they might overslide the bag, like Ellsbury just did. Sigh.

Joe says:

Mike A. says:

And Melky throws the ball home instead of hitting the cutoff man to keep Pedroia at first. Another fundamental mistake.

Anyone out there still think he’s the next Bernie Williams?

Adam says:

Well, I’m guessing your comment there is completely knee-jerk, but still, if Melky becomes the next Bernie, that’d be an incredible rise in quality.

Joe says:

It’s time to bring in Igawa, show these Bastardos what a real Japanese ace looks like!

cjc says:

this game has 15-2 written all over it missed oppurtunities shoty play bad pitcing

Mike A. says:

God JD Drew sucks.

It’s only 5-1 in the 4th, this game is far from over. They just need to get their heads on straight. And get Melky on the bench.

Mike A. says:

There one reason, and one reason only, why Dice-K’s pitching the best he has in weeks: I sat him in my fantasy league tonight. Figures.

cjc says:

seriously what is the dam strikezone

Mike A. says:

Heh, I was talking to one my good friends back east on the phone just now, and he said “I know the count’s 3-0, and I know there’s already 2 outs, but I betcha JD Drew bounces into a double play.”

Joe says:

J.D. Drew strikes me as someone that Steinbrenner would have signed years ago.

Mike A. says:

Forget A-Rod, Posada for MVP! He’s been un-BE-lievable this year.

Joe says:

All kidding aside, whose season is more out of character or over the top, Posada or Rodgriguez

Stylez says:

If posada put this kind of year last year he would have been MVP over Morneau and Jeter. Unfortunately for him A-Rod has a strangled hold on it this year. And he deserves it because if it wasn’t for him we’d be out of contention for the wild card! Chien ming wang has an outside chance of 20 wins this season….how bout the man from Taiwan winning CY?

Mike A. says:

Melk’s doing his best JD Drew impression with the “oh wait, that wasn’t ball-4?” bullshit.

Mike A. says:

Holy crapola does Timlin look like shit. These pitches are all imminently obliteratable.

cjc says:

except if you are jeter in sept

Mike A. says:

Are these idiots calling the game for ESPN for real?

“Derek Jeter might have swung at ball 4 there.”

Gee, ya think? What gave it away, the fact that the ball bounced a foot in front of the plate, or your keen, unmatched knowledge of baseball? Fucking incredible.

NYFan50 says:

Mike: Sutcliffe said earlier in the game that Halladay is the best pitcher in the AL this year. And we all know how wonderful Dusty Baker is. You can’t expect anything from these people.

cjc says:

that is filled under reasons I’m glad yanks are balcked out on espn

cjc says:

filled oh boy I might need to pay more attention when I’m typing

could Giambi be any worse seriously thats about as patheic as you get this is little league

cjc says:

Joe says:

Between Ortiz and Giambi they both couldn’t have done much else wrong on that play. Where the hell was Ortiz going? There was never a question whether the ball was going to be caught.

cjc says:

cjc says:

Joe says:

Why didn’t Giambi get an error on that?

Adam says:
Adam says:

Thanks, Joe.

We’ll see how things go tomorrow, I guess.

cjc says:

Joe says:

oh, but don’t you pick your head up and look at where the ball is?

cjc says:

this honestly is one of thte absolute worst games I have seen in a while 3 1/2 hours and its the 6th this is brutal and Sean Hen is worthless he may turn it around some day and be valuable out of the pen but not in NY please cut ties already

Mike A. says:

They’re probably going to cut him in the offseason to free up a 40-man roster spot, so can I please get one last look at Mighty Matt in a Yankee uniform? Pretty please?

Mike A. says:

At least Francona is dumb enough to inexplicably use Okajima here.

And just as I write this, meatball takes him deep…

Mike A. says:

Papelbon for 2? Boy the Sox sure must feel comfortable with that 5.5 game lead…

Mike A. says:

Holy shit. Holy shit. Holy shit. Holy shit. Holy shit. Holy shit. Holy shit. Holy shit. Holy shit. Holy shit. Holy shit. Holy shit. Holy shit. Holy shit. Holy shit. Holy shit. Holy shit. Holy shit. Holy shit. Holy shit. Holy shit. Holy shit. Holy shit. Holy shit.

Ho. ly. Shit.

NYFan50 says:

Oh man, the 2 second shot of Theo there was the best.

cjc says:

wow who saw this one coming gotta love baseball

Joe says:

Mike A. says:

Oh man, this is AWESOME.

cjc says:

wow papsmear has nothing

NYFan50 says:

I can’t believe they came back after looking like such crap all game.

cjc says:

here the question who pitches the 8th

cjc says:

anyone else seeing those 88 mph fb from the smear

Joe says:

That’s the first out, awesome

Mike A. says:

Farns I guess, which is why they need to tack on another run.

Yeah, I’m seeing Paps “fastball” as well.

cjc says:

unavailable that neck still they said Viz is warming but his shoulder came up tight today and Torre said he wanted to avoid him this one is far from over

Mike A. says:

Meatball crushes one right here, and all those botched plays are forgiven.

Mike A. says:

Oh, and why in the world would they pitch to A-Rod with first base open there?

cjc says:

because he is their answer to Mariano

cjc says:

a less than 100% Vizciano vs the heart of the order hold your breath Yankee fans

Mike A. says:

If another guy gets on, you gotta bring in Mo, right?

cjc says:

I would trust Joba to close tomorrow if need be and lean toward Mo for 4 or 5 outs

Mike A. says:

While I agree, I just can’t see them throwing Joba out there for his 1st save opportunity IN FENWAY. They’ve protected him so much, I just refuse to believe they’d do it.

Nice throw Jorge. Fucking beautiful.

cjc says:

dumb wow Francona is sure showing the genius(sarcasm) rotoworld likes to complain about

cjc says:

True I would do it but I’m not sure Joe would and boom it doesn’t matter now

Mike A. says:

Know what the best part about that caught stealing is? JD Drew will lead-off the 9th…

Joe says:

The only way this gets better is if they destroy Gagne

cjc says:

there you go mighty matt for closer

Mike A. says:

I trust him more than Farnsworth. Heck, I trust him more than anyone in the ‘pen outside of Mo, Joba & probably the Viz.

Mike A. says:

We’re closing in on what I believe is our first 100 comment post here at RAB. And all it took was a 6-run comeback off Papelbon in a playoff race!

Mike A. says:

I’m shocked Nancy Drew didn’t GIDP.

Joe says:

Do you guys have a speech prepared for this epic moment

cjc says:

cano needs to make that play

Mike A. says:

Is anybody else ready to punch that guy in the white shirt with the half-fro behind homeplate? Sit down and shut the fuck up already.

Mike A. says:

Welcome to the bigs kid, you’re not in AAA anymore!

That was no cheapy fellas, 6 against Okajima & Papelbon is crazy.

DotF goes live in 4 minutes…

Mike A. says:

I wonder where that Red Sox troll is…

Mac says:

Holy christ. That was just an awesome game.

Joe says:

Well Gentlemen on that note, those of you on the East Coast, have a good rest of the night. For those of us on the West Coast, enjoy the begining of the evening. Man, that makes this night so much better. I’m gonna go get a redbull get hyped up, and drink myself silly. YEEEEEEHAAWWWWW

Mike A. says:

I’m going to drink until I can’t feel feelings anymore. What a way to kick off the weekend.

C-Note says:

great game tread- but Mike A, you’ve gotta cut the shit with Melky— you want us to forget you wanted to trade him for Gange– he guns down Papi @ home, he walks & scores in the 8th, we win by a run– yea, the slide into first was stupid but I dont think this was the game to run him down

Jersey says:

Now THAT….

….that was a thing of beauty.

dan says:

holy shit. 112 comments and i missed all of ‘em. RAB record right here, not that anyone really cares though

Stylez says:
