Game 148: Sliding into first

By

After last night’s amazingly unbelievable win, Chien-Ming Wang and Josh Beckett square off with 19 wins or 7 losses on the line. I don’t have much else to say as I’m still feeling euphoric over last night’s victory. Thanks also for the 114 comments. That’s a River Ave. Blues high. But who’s counting?

If Melky slides into first one more time, I’m going to write about it with righteous outrage. So watch out, Melky. Meanwhile, despite nearly costing the Yanks the game last night, Jason Giambi is still playing first base today. Fingers are firmly crossed on that one. On to the lineups…

Yankees
Damon LF
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
Rodriguez 3B
Posada C

Ortiz DH

    Great nice start

  2. Ben K. says:

Someone should tell Tim McCarver that the Mets are definitely not winning their game anymore.

  3. ShawnT says:

    Mccavers is an idiot,

  4. Ben K. says:

Matsui’s swinging at the first pitch there. No good.

  5. Joe says:

No consistency, half the team is taking pitches, working walks, the other half swings as the first pitch.

  6. NYFan50 says:

Wang can’t throw a strike….we could really use a tapper back to the mound right about now.

  7. El Esteroide says:

It makes total sense for Boston to be taking all of Wang’s pitches. It does not make sense for the Yankees to do the same–Beckett’s right in the zone and we’re just letting him rack up strikeouts and keep his pitch count low.

  8. Ben K. says:

This other guy in the booth for FOX today makes me pine for Joe Buck.

  9. El Esteroide says:

The other guy is Lewin, the idiot who did the last game of the Yankees/Tigers series last year (remember all that “globo gym” stuff?) He’s the only commentator who’s ever made me turn to John Sterling!

  10. ShawnT says:

These guys make you feel as if your watching a game on the redsox broadcast, can you be anymore fucking biased

  11. ShawnT says:

    hey he swung

  12. Ben K. says:

Alright. Enough with Giambi at first base.

  13. Mike A. says:

    Hip hip Jorge!

Now for the love of God be okay.

  14. Ben K. says:

Ok. That was ridiculous. Beckett should be tossed from the game.

  15. Mike A. says:

I can’t believe people think this guy is the next Bernie Williams. He’s gone out like a wimp every time he’s stepped to the plate this series.

  16. Mike R. says:

The umpires basically gave the Red Sox the green light to do that when they didn’t issue a warning after the Youkilis incident. They eject and suspend Joba for throwing in the vicinity and Beckett will get off unblemished.

  17. Joe says:

As the score roles to 8-1, I turn my focus to the baseline report for humor. I can’t quite tell what’s funnier the baseline report, or the responses. You should all flip over for a laugh.

  18. Ivan says:

i love torre but that was a terrible job of managing in the bottom of the 7th inning. I mean you take out Edwar for Ron Villone who sucks and then brings in bruney.

So he takes out a reliever for two relievers who are not better than the one who he took out first. I mean Edwar was pitching quite except for the walk to JD Drew.

Joe I love ya but step ya game up man.

  19. Mike A. says:

That kinda sucked. Oh well, go get’em tomorrow.

  20. Mike R. says:

Mike. How is the Trenton game going?

  21. brxbmrs says:

    Mike A.,

Your fixation on Melky’s shortcomings are pretty tough to take. Ever think that the kid might be tired? Just like he ran out of juice last year… Torre will run him out there till he drops b\c he has no other options, or just doesn’t care or isn’t paying attention.

Not everyone can play every game like A-Rod or Jeter – but before I blame Melk (who looks spent) I look at the horrible performances by Matsui (who can’t even play the OF anymore) and the failings of many of the other guys who make 25 times plus what Melk does.

Funny how Matsui keeps getting a free pass – he’s got something like 10 extra base hits since Aug 1st – he’s definitely worth 13 mil a year.

Gotta give the kid a chance – I don’t care if he doesn’t get another hit all year – I’d rather see him in CF next year than Torri Hunter who is going to get ridiculous $ for what he gives or any of the other FA’s who have their best ball behind them.

And as for your Bernie swipe elsewhere – Melk had gotten off to a better start than Bernie did his first two years – he’ll most likely never come near Bernie’s power, but who says he has to?

  22. C-Note says:

yea, Mike A, a loss by almost double digits and you’re giving Melky shit? Give it a rest already— maybe give some shit to Giambi or Matsui- just for a change of pace

  23. Mike A. says:

It’s one thing to suck at the game, like say Giambi’s D at first. He just can’t play the position, simple as that. Nothing he can really do about it.

Melk is making fundamental errors – missing the cutoff man, sliding into first – stuff like that has been hammered into his brain since childhood. It’s inexcusable at this level, and frustrating as fucking hell.
