Yanks officially bring back Molina, DFA Phillips

Terry Francona can no longer manage in his pajamas
Yanks, Twins meeting now, but nothing doing yet

PeteAbe’s got the word:

The New York Yankees announced today they have signed catcher Jose Molina to a two-year contract. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Yankees designated infielder Andy Phillips for assignment.

Well, we all knew the Yanks would have to start clearing room on the 40-man roster soon enough. We all know about everything Andy’s gone through and how great of a person he is, but he was given plenty of chances and never really did enough to warrant a job. He’ll land on his feet.

The Yanks still have to clear room for A-Rod, Pettitte and Mo, so this won’t be the last of the 40-man cuts.

Mike, if is that you on the FJM comments section referencing EqA? The RAB Guide to Stats clearly states that you “don’t believe in this VooDoo bullshit.” Of course, you might not be the only Mike A on the internet.

two spots will open up after the Santana trade…..

    • Glen L

How do you figure .. assuming its Hughes/Melky/Guy not on MLB roster … 1 spot would open up as Santana will occupy Hughes spot and Guy not on MLB roster .. well isn’t on the Yanks big league roster

He means spots on the 40-man could potentialy open up with the Johan deal since it would be a 3-for-1.

This does suck for Phillips, I hope he ends up a MLB player this season.

But the third player being offered (whomever it is/will be) isn’t on the MLB 40 man roster .. he’ll be on a minor league roster

Oh ok, I see what you mean. Yeah the only person that the Twins might want (who Ive read the Yanks are reluctant on including in the deal) that’s on the 40-man is Alberto Gonzalez.

I like Andy Philips. Who the hell do we have? I can’t think of 40 people.

Really like this. I was very glad to see us acquire Jose Molina last year, he provides a stable backstop and is much better defensively than Jorge. In addition, it’s the first solid backup catcher we’ve had in…ages?

I mean, unless you consider Kelly Stinnett the idea backup? :-p

  • save hughes

hes th best backup since jorge backed up girardi

  • Eric

Phillips just could never hit enough. Especially at 1b.

assuming the third player is the AAA shortstop, or one of the 40 man roster second tier pitchers like Karstens, Ramirez, Wright, etc…..they just signed 2 minor league FA’s so I think it’s the shortstop

It probably will be A-Gon, and the Yankees are preparing for that possibility. However, two things I am remembering: one article stated that Alberto was one of the high-level prospects the Yankees were not willing to be that third player. That he is as high as Kennedy or Horne is not really accurate, so that could have been a (what?!) faulty report. The second point is that the Yankees gave them a list of third prospect choices–so, depending on the Twins needs, that’s the Twins call I guess. Yanks are probably just hedging their bet that it will be, again, A-Gon.

    Good news for Shelley.

phillips sucked. he simply stuck around as a “Torre guy”.

    so glad to have Girardi.

    welcome to the meritocracy.

So who gets DFA’d to make room when the ARod, Rivera, and Pettitte deals get finalized? And, assuming that we bring back Luis Vizcaino, which we’ve said we will, that’s one more spot…

Reviewing the 40-man, my picks would be Matt DeSalvo, Sean Henn, Bronson Sardhina, and Carl Pavano. Pavano is the one that I don’t understand… why is he even still here anyway? He’s going to be hurt for the duration of the time that he’s under contract, so he has no usefulness to us and no trade value to anyone else. It’s moot, because he would have been cut eventually anyway, but why cut Andy Phillips when we could have cut Pavano? What am I missing?

Here’s one more thought: With Rivera, Farnsworth, Ohlendorf, Britton, Ramirez, Bruney, Veras, Patterson, and Beam all ready to go, Sanchez on the 40 man just waiting for medical clearance, Ron Mahay possibly joining the fray, the possible ability to convert failed starters Karstens/Rasner/Wright/Clippard/Igawa into specialty relievers, and White/Horne/Melancon/Cox/Whelan all around the corner, why SHOULD we bring back Vizcaino? He’s a type B free agent… if somebody else signs him, we’d get a sandwich pick and a bonus 2nd rounder, no?. Those picks are probably worth more than he is, and he’s not that much better than the gaggle of internal options that we have in house…
