Game 11: Have you seen my laptop?

Lock your laptops, folks. Clay Buchholz, he of the stolen laptops (and, yes, a Major League no-hitter), is making his first start against the Yankees tonight. Buchholz had a bad Spring Training and lost his first start of the season.

The Yankees, meanwhile, are countering with their ace. Chien-Ming Wang has looked exceptional this year so far. In two starts covering 13 innings, Wang is 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA. He’s given up 10 hits while walking four and, encouragingly, striking out eight. He’s keeping the ball low and keeping runners off base.

Tonight, though, will be a challenge for Wang. He’s facing a Red Sox team that has, by and large, hit him well over the last few seasons. David Ortiz, currently mired in a 3 for 36 drought to start the season, is 15 for 30 against Wang; Manny Ramirez is 13 for 22; and Kevin Youkilis is 7 for 21. As a team, the Sox hit Wang at a .300/.394/.442 clip and six of the 30 career HRs allowed by the sinkerball specialist have come off the bats of the Red Sox.

The Yankees go with something of a different lineup tonight. Johnny Damon is getting the night off, and the hot-hitting Melky Cabrera will lead off. The game, weather permitting, starts at 7:05 p.m., and we get to experience the drama of a Yankees-Red Sox three-game set all over again.

  1. Manimal says:

wasnt jeter supposed to play today?

    • Ben K. says:

Not really. Very optimistically he could have played today, but because of the cold and weather, the Yanks are holding him out. He probably won’t play until Tampa, and even then I’m guessing he’ll DH while Posada moves back behind the plate.

  2. Ivan says:

Very interesting how the Yanks go against Buchholz.

  3. dan says:

I think we all know that Bill James came to the Red Sox solely for the free laptops… why else would Buchholz be on that team?

  4. Manimal says:

    Giambi 8th!??! Smart move.

I REALLY dont like Cano Killing rallies before Abreu and Arod batting.

  5. doty says:

great opportunity for robby to get out of his slump.

  6. zack says:

Anyone else surprised to see Coco as opposed to Jacoby with a GB pitcher? Shouldnt Jacoby the super-speedy excel against such a pitcher?

  7. Manimal says:

LETS GO YANKS, I need something to brag about to my friends on Monday LOL.

  8. Manimal says:

    Emmit smith commercial=gay.

  9. Jamal G. says:

It’s funny how so much attention is paid to the character of athletes these days by the media and if I am not mistaken Sports Illustrated has been the only major national media outlet to report on Clay Buchholz’s actions in college.

I finally get to see that changeup in person with Clay Buhholz and I’ve been eager for awhile now. They say he’s quick to the plate so let’s see how the Yankees execute their running game on a guy who excels on his changeup and curveball.

Oh and what about Jacoby Ellsbury, TEH GREATEST PROSPECT EVA!!11!!1!!!!!!!111

    I hate you Boston.

  10. jason says:

Lots of people here in Boston upset thet Coco is playing. Speculation is that the Sox are showcasing Crisp for a trade. The management claims that crisp is a good fastball hitter. More likely Ellsbury plays the next couple of days.

  11. Manimal says:

BTW, just started raining where I live.

  12. Manimal says:

NOOOOOOOOO YES is blacked out and Im stuck with NESN.

    • BigBlueAL says:

even though i am obviously a Yankees fan, i actually enjoy the NESN broadcast, even though i obviously would rather watch YES. but since i live in Miami and watch thru the MLB package, i too am stuck with NESN tonight…

      • Manimal says:

do you have Direct TV, try 622.

      • BigBlueAL says:

nah, i got Comcast Digital Cable, only have the package not the actual channels as well. so whatever broadcast they show (usually the home team’s) im stuck with.

        • Manimal says:

aw that stinks, direct tv has both home and away feed.

          • BigBlueAL says:

actually, i dont mind cause i get to watch the different teams broadcasts which is at times kinda cool. and since ive lived in Miami since 1990, i am used to watchin Yankees games w/o Yankees broadcasters. heck, i remember Scooter and Bill White as a kid when i lived in NY, anytime a Yankees player hit a HR, it was Scooter sayin, “Hey Don Mattingly (for example), this Bud’s for you!!!!” Classic.

    • Link says:

yeah this NESN may have me homicidal by the end of the night…

  13. Mike A. says:

Do you know why the Yanks have had so many rain/weather issues this year? It’s the baseball gods telling them not to fuck with the Stadium.

  14. zack says:

NOTE: Laptop Thief “only” throws his FB at 91, so he clearly cannot be legit…

  15. mustang says:

Here we go…….. I hate these guys….Red Sox and Cowboys if they lost the rest of my life I would die a happy man. LOL

  16. mustang says:

American’s Team and Red Sox Nation what a bunch of crap…..LOl

  17. BigBlueAL says:

    what a shocker, a 1-2-3 inning.

  18. Manimal says:

LOL Speaking of swinging at the fist pitch(cough pedroia)

  19. Mike A. says:

Coco’s got the Bo Derek hairstyle goin’ on.

  20. Mike A. says:

Sully and Smitty aren’t happy with that call. They might staht throwing pizza.

  21. Jamal G. says:

LoL, YES just owned that Guisseppe Franco commercial.

  22. mustang says:

Wang got out of the first easily. Thats always a good sign.
What with the rain again ?

    • dan says:

The rain is due to the curse of the yankees, it will follow them for years to come… don’t you read the ny post?

  23. Mike A. says:

What are the odds that Kevin Youkilis has molested Clay Buchholz?

    • LiveFromNewYork says:

Excuse me, I have to go shampoo my brain now and try to remove that image.

    • Whitey14 says:

Probably about the same as that greasy giambi pissing on guys legs in the gang showers when they’re not looking….He reminds me of Gorman Thomas and I’m pretty certain he used to do that…

  24. Manimal says:

Remy just asked if Matsui married a real person or a picture…

  25. BigBlueAL says:

    No-Hit this!!!!!!!!!!!

  26. Mike A. says:

Did Kay just say that Coco threw a 4 hopper to Pedroia?

    • Kevin23 says:

lol…ah yes, the ole 4 hopper. I love Kay, bu God help us all if someone is a triple away from the cycle tonight.

  27. Manimal says:

Bucholz acted like a dog fake dieing on that line drive…

  28. LiveFromNewYork says:

I miss when he wasn’t anywhere near the game. The good thing about the KC series.

  29. Mike A. says:

  30. BigBlueAL says:

im in total shock, Giambi didnt come thru……

  31. BigBlueAL says:

HOLY SHIT!!! CC Sabathia losin 6-0 in the 2nd inning to the freakin A’s!!!!!

  32. Manimal says:

    He drilled that too.

The runs will come, we are hitting the crap out of the ball.

  33. mustang says:

No I don’t read NY post I lost enough brain cells drinking in college.. LOL

  34. Manimal says:

    95 mph heat from wang.

  35. Mike A. says:

CMW just blew a fastball by Manny. Don’t see that every day.

  36. Chip says:

K of Ortiz, K of Manny. I’m loving it

  37. Jamal G. says:

Not one groundout but Wang is just toying with Mofos tonight.

  38. BigBlueAL says:

its sad when Giambi is in the lineup for his glove…….

    • Jamal G. says:

Come on man, he did hit the ball pretty well his frst time up.

      • BigBlueAL says:

for 21 million this season, he better hit the ball hard ALL THE TIME!!!! its just that Giambi is the symbol for all the stupid FA signings the Yanks have made since the 2001 off-season, and even though i like him, i cant stand that he is still our best option at 1B..

  39. Mike A. says:

Check out the Big G at first.

  40. Mike A. says:

I know it’s been only 2 starts + 2 innings so far, but CMW has looked really, really good this year. He’s at his peak performance age, so it makes sense.

  41. CB says:

I wonder if Manny was guessing slider on that strike out. Him swinging through one of Wang’s fastballs does not seem like a high probability event.

Wang is mixing his pitches very well this season.

    • RollignWave says:

I think Manny was cheating for the 2-seamer but Wang went with a ole 4-seam and made him look silly. i always wondered why Wang doesn’t mix his FB up more

  42. mustang says:

Actually don’t like the fact that he hasn’t had a ground-ball, but man he looks good. He is hitting spots like a machine. Can we please score !!!!!!

  43. Jamal G. says:

Hey, who were the guys who won the MLB 08: The SHOW Contest?

  44. mustang says:

At this rate this game will be done before have to go to work. Both offensive look like shit.

    • BigBlueAL says:

which isnt a good sign since we face Beckett and Dice-K next 2 games (even though we hit Dice-K everytime last season, but with the way our offense has been this season, u cant compare what we did to him last season to what we might do to him on Sunday)

    • LiveFromNewYork says:

they said the sox and yanks were looking pretty evenly shitty coming into this game. Hence, the same record. They won’t go out of this series with the same record but they will probably even up again and again. And it’s not that they’re blazing a trail through the AL East. It’s because they are both sucking bigtime. For who they are anyway.

  45. Jamal G. says:

That commercial gets me every time.

  46. LiveFromNewYork says:

Give CMW his Cy Young NOW. He’s saying arbitrate this.

  47. BigBlueAL says:

this inning is our inning comin up!!!!

  48. Mike A. says:

Give Lugo one of those crazy evil looking mustaches, and he’d look just like Waluigi.

  49. mustang says:

I got my ground-balls. Now I need runs and tonight’s lotto numbers. LOL

  50. LiveFromNewYork says:

bucholz should be called opie. He’s like 12.

  51. mustang says:

    Second baseman that can hit.
    Name: Cano
If found please return to the New York Yankees

  52. Mike A. says:

When was the last time we had a Yankees-Red Sox pitcher’s duel?

  53. BigBlueAL says:

let me start some controversy, Phil Hughes BETTER look as good as Buchholz has so far on Sunday…

  54. mustang says:

These guys must have reservations at the Top of the Hub… LOl

  55. Mike A. says:

That certainly could not have felt good for Coco. Big heavy fastball in on the hands…

  56. Mike A. says:

Thanks for the first pitch GIDP Ortiz. Much appreciated.

  57. kris says:

    nice going arod.

  58. mustang says:

Hit or error ? No Yankee bias please ? LOL

  59. Jeff says:

Buchholz throwing low 90′s like Hughes!!?? (sarcasm)

    Changing speeds is the game….

  60. Chofo says:

    I say hit

  61. Jamal G. says:

Great pitch by Buchh (I so totally called chaneup, yay me).

  62. mustang says:

    I said hit too

  63. Jamal G. says:

    Molina can fucking rake.

  64. Kevin23 says:

Jose is really hitting well this year.

  65. mustang says:

I know i’m hard on Cashman, but Molina was a GREAT pick up.

  66. Mike R. says:

    .320 baby! .320!!!!!!!!

  67. Jamal G. says:

Buchholz for the second start this year has kind of lost it in the middle innings. Mike, was there any stamina issues with him coming up through the minors or can we atrribute this to lack of arm strength in April?

  68. dan says:

which is the hilarious commercial you guys are referring to?

  69. Mike A. says:

I read John Farrell’s lips during that mound visit just now, he said “if you don’t give me my fucking laptop back, I’m calling the cops.”

  70. Kevin23 says:

If not for Robby being out of position a few times, Molina would be lights out throwing this year too. Crazy good for a back-up.

  71. LiveFromNewYork says:

    Rain. There’s a surprise.

  72. ansky says:

    way to plate those runs!!

  73. mustang says:

    SHIT !!!!!!!!

  74. Mike A. says:

Erg, the Former Attorney General made a rookie mistake right there.

  75. RichYF says:

2001-2005: “His bat carries his defensive inabilities.”
2006+: “He’s an excellent receiver. He calls a great game. He is such a clubhouse presence.”

  76. mustang says:

That a little hard Mike A. that was hard to read don’t you think.

  77. Manimal says:

    Wang is DEALING.

BTW, if wang gets a ** ******(Dont want to jynx it) Watch ESPN bitch at how Arod’s error was a hit.

  78. Mike A. says:

Oh come on Bobby. I coulda caught that.

  79. Jamal G. says:

    Could have had that Bobby.

  80. Mike A. says:

WTF is with all the long flies that inning?

  81. ansky says:

i guess it was too much to ask of Bobby to make 3 catches in one inning. That was close to the easiest of them all.

  82. dan says:

Okay what the hell is up with these fly balls?

  83. mustang says:

That’s Bobby he good for a few of those a year. Brain cramp !!!!

  84. Jamal G. says:

Maybe he’s featuring the four seam a bit more than usual.

  85. Mike A. says:

Heh, nice play by Timlin in the pen on the homer. He’s almost as good with the glove as Manny.

  86. Mike P says:

Man! Wang was two slick plays off being perfect through 5…
    Talk about fine margins.
(Closest Abreu’ll make to the wall all year)

  87. Mike A. says:

87 mph cheese by Buchholz right there.

  88. Mike A. says:

Heh, A-Rod just said he didn’t get a chance to play with Bobby Murcer much.

  89. Jamal G. says:

Good pitch finally going to a FB 1-0 after all those CB.

  90. Mike A. says:

Seriously, if you’re one of the people worried about Hughes’ velocity, check out the gun readings on Buchholz tonight.

  91. mustang says:

nice Mike A thanks for the answer.

  92. Jamal G. says:

    Buchholz you dumb ass.

  93. Mike A. says:

Did Buchholz really think he could get away with 3 curves in one at-bat against A-Rod?

  94. Jamal G. says:

Come on, first SB of the season here.

  95. ansky says:

Hideki has been all over Clay tonight. Certainly has his number

  96. Jamal G. says:

Are the people (yanks fans included) who talked shit about Matsui all off-season about him being washed up (even though he recorded yet another 100 RBI season) finally shutting up?

  97. Kevin23 says:

yet ANOTHER ground ball to second base.

  98. Jamal G. says:

So let’s see what we can do against this bullpen. We touched up Okajima towards the end of last year and Paps hasn’t been perfect against us either so hopefully we can get something going here.

  99. Jamal G. says:

I know his means nothing but it is kind of nice that every time there’s a camera on Joe Girardi, Dave Eiland, Rob Thompson, and Kevin Long they’re usually standing and right behind the dugout fence.

  100. Mike A. says:

57 pitches through 6 for Wang. He could probably go 10 tonight if needed.

  101. Manimal says:

Deciding factors for the rest of the game:

    * To Joba or not to Joba, he pitched 2 innings yesturday and you might need him more tomorrow.
    *Traber vs Ortiz
    *Yanks vs Sox Pen.

  102. Jamal G. says:

Last year when Wang was flirting with that no-no at Yankees Stadium during the 3-game sweep of BOS in August, how far did he take it? Was it in the 7th when he lost it, or the 6th?

  103. Mike R. says:

I miss Shelley. This Red Stripe is for you buddy.

  104. Manimal says:

Pray that Wang goes consistant untill the 9th when Mariano K’s everyone.

  105. Jamal G. says:

Shows you how inconsistent the inside corner has been, Giambi even had to look back to see if that was a called strike.

  106. Manimal says:

Giambi!!!! That was NOT a cheap Yankee stadium homerun.

  107. jaffa says:

wow, not even to right field.

  108. Link says:

Jorge should be nervous lol…his spot might get taken…

  109. RichYF says:

Are the people (yanks fans included) who talked shit about Giambi all off-season about him being washed up (even though he recorded yet another…excellent? season) finally shutting up?

    • Manimal says:

Im taking out my anger on him because his massive contract may have costed the yankees Johan Santana.

    • ansky says:

theres a lot of “are the people who talked shit about(insert name here)” going on here tonight. What am i missing?

      • RichYF says:

I copied and pasted Jamal G.’s post and changed the name. I thought it was hilarious at the time. the “excellent?” was there because big G obviously didn’t have 100rbi. He didn’t have any good stats, so I just tried to play it off.

  110. Manimal says:

    MOLINA adding to the fire.

    This is the inning.

    This is it.

    The inning when we EXPLODE.

  111. ansky says:

    “too high”…that was a shot

even if its just fr the nigh i want to give him the name Touch-Em-All Timlin

  112. Jamal G. says:

Obvious bunt here, come on Gonzo, lay it down.

  113. Mike A. says:

Jose Molina leads the AL in doubles.

  114. Manimal says:

Melky redeem yourself. Thats an ORDER Comrade!

  115. Mike A. says:

Nice job by Melk. Gettin’ the job done with the sac fly. Assist to Alberto.

  116. Jamal G. says:

Loving this game, Wang doing his thing even though he has a high fly ball total and the situational hitting has been better.

  117. Manimal says:

Wang needs to be efficient and effective for us to pass the torch to Rivera.

  118. Mike A. says:

This is odd, I’m used to 5 hour marathon games between these two teams. I love it.

  119. Jamal G. says:

Robinson Cano is my favorite player on the Yankees so it really sucks to see him in this mini-funk but I have no doubt this is nothing to worry about.

  120. ansky says:

ah, i missed those obligatory Yankees Suck chants so much all winter.

  121. Jamal G. says:

God damn does A-Rod have an arm. I don’t think people appreciate the skill he just displayed there, straight line throw from the 3B bag.

  122. Mike A. says:

    David Ortiz looks like shit.

  123. Mike A. says:

I believe the term is “dealing.”

  124. Jamal G. says:

Straight owning bitches tonight, I’m loving the non-ace BS people spewed about Chien-Ming Wang.

BTW is the Chien pronouced in Taiwanese Shh-yen, Chin, or Chen?

  125. Chip says:

And Manny goes down with the slider

  126. Mike A. says:

If Francona leaves Lopez in to face A-Rod … oh man, he might hit one across the Mass Pike.

  127. Jamal G. says:

Not exactly the Mass-Pike but I’ll take it. :)

  128. Jamal G. says:

I want a SB here. LH hitter up and Javy Lopez is not quick to the plate nor does he throw anything 90+ MPH.

  129. Manimal says:

    Come on giambino!

  130. Manimal says:

Remy just called yankee stadium the Shrine of Baseball.

    Thats some epic stuff.

  131. Mike A. says:

Oh my goodness the bases are loaded for Molina. Hava Molina!!!

  132. Manimal says:

Molina is such a threat ahhahahaha

  133. Jamal G. says:

So I guess the Japan trip means dick. The good teams won and the bad teams didn’t as if it was any other year.

  134. Chip says:

I’m surprised they didn’t bring in Paps to face the league leader in doubles here :D

  135. Mike R. says:

How about a trademark molina double here? please…

  136. Mike A. says:

Shout out to my boy David Aardsma, showin’ some love for a fellow Penn Stater, even if he was only there for a year.

    • dan says:

I can see you being the only person in the stadium, going nuts chanting “we are! penn state!” and everyone around you gets up and goes to a different section.

  137. Manimal says:

    Molina is a warrior.

  138. Mike A. says:

    Haha. This is awesome.

  139. Manimal says:

David Aardsma(man, his name must have been first alphabetically for EVERYTHING) attempted a joba-esque fist pump but it didn’t work at ALL.

  140. Chip says:

O well, can’t get em all. I like how we’re wearing down the Sox pen though

  141. Manimal says:

Justin Louis Chamberlain you put that ball down RIGHT NOW.

  142. RichYF says:

Is Joba warming up? I thought I heard that…If so…Why?!

  143. Chip says:

I like Wang mixing in the slider the third time through the order

  144. Jamal G. says:

I hope I don’t see Mariano Rivera, this is beautiful right here.

  145. Mike R. says:

I think the question on everyone’s mind is “Should we start Wang tomorrow?” Looks like he is going to get through this game in under 100 pitches.

  146. CB says:

I’ve always liked Wang but always thought he was a step below the Halladay and Webb level.

This season and particularly tonight he throwing a game that is Roy Halladay at his best.

  147. Manimal says:

    Lets have a vote.

Should CMW pitch a Complete game with 79 pitch through 8.0 IP ?

    I think he should.

  148. Manimal says:

Former Attorney General with a double

  149. Manimal says:

    Come on Cano. Jesus Christ.

  150. Manimal says:

Wow, is this thread a new record for comments? check how many the first game of this season had.

  151. Mike A. says:

Nice hustle Bobby. That was big.

  152. Mike A. says:

According to Kay, the Yanks “have been out stolen based 14-0 this year.” Out stolen based? Hehe.

  153. Dude, Melky, Molina, the Attorney General — it’s kind of awesome.

  154. Jamal G. says:

YES what in God’s name are youd doing?!?! Play of the Game before the game is over????? You sons of bitches…

  155. Chip says:

I hope that nobody is warming in the pen, this is Wang’s game

  156. Manimal says:

    1 down. 2 to go.

  157. RichYF says:

July 23rd, “Main Championship” section 12 loge level

    Anyone going to be there?

  158. Jamal G. says:

    That son of a bitch.

  159. Mike A. says:

    Typical Red Sox bullshit move.

  160. Manimal says:

Come on Wang! 1 Freaking out left don’t lose it now!

  161. joba says:

  162. Mike A. says:

    Whatta game by Obi-Wang.

  163. Jamal G. says:

Great game Yankees, unbelievable game Mr. Wang.

  164. Manimal says:

YES, sweet victory. Im going out for Ice cream, see you guys again at 3pm tomorrow!

  165. Jamal G. says:

So the two teams that lit up Wang last year have scored a combined 3 ER in 16 innings of him this year.

  166. Manimal says:

Pettite gave wang a hug. What a champ.

  167. McLovin says:

Thats how you do it smalls

  168. Mike R. says:

I can see the headlines now. “Like Dirk Diggler Wang comes up big.”

    • Mike A. says:

I prefer “Yanks beat Sox with their Wang.”

      • Mike R. says:

Ok…How about “Yankees’ Wang to big for Sox”?

      • Whitey14 says:

Dynamite drop in Mike! They don’t call you the best color man in the league for nuthin’!

Even us Red Sox fans were impressed with chin my wang tonight. He was dealing for sure. The Sox should be embarrased that they couldn’t muster more than one fuckin’ hit off him. Oh well, maybe they can get two hits off him next week.

Buchholz’s velocity might have been down tonight, but overall his control was much better than his last time out. He and Phil still have some growing pains to go through and some learning about pitching to do, but my guess is in a couple of years they’ll both be certified aces.

I’m very dissapointed the Sox didn’t get into the yanks pen tonight, that will almost certainly pay negative dividends over the next two days if their bats don’t wake up.
