Mini-DotF

By Mike Axisa

Not much going on in the minors today, so I’ll keep it short. Triple-A Scranton had the night off, while Austin Jackson went hitless for the third straight game. Jose Tabata is still MIA, and Eric Hacker continued his brilliance for Tampa. Jesus Montero doubled for the fourth straight game, giving him 7 in his last 9 games. Dellin Betances had a good outing, but was outpitched by the 10th overall pick in the 2007 draft.

That about wraps it up, see y’all tomorrow.

Cox, perfect inning and a K, so far no problem at AA…him and Robertson together should be lights out

I hate to nitpick, but Montero needs to learn to take a walk. He’s absolutely tearing the cover off the ball, but I don’t know if that’s gonna fly against better pitching if he doesn’t have any discipline (and yes, I know, he’s like the youngest guy in the league… I’m just sayin’)

What troubles me a bit is Montero’s lack of walks. He has only 2 in 111 ABs while K’ing 18 times. That’s a K/BB ratio of 9/1…

Mike A. says:

It is nitpicking at this point. Usually you just hope an 18-year old in full season ball can keep his head above water, which Montero has certainly done. The walks will come one way or the other, because pitchers are going to start pitching around him.

The important thing is to see how he reacts to that, is he patient and take what they give him, or does he expand his zone and start hacking at stuff off the plate? My guess is that he’ll start hacking at first and go into a prolonged slump, maybe a month or two, then he’ll start to adjust and stay within himself.

Whenever you have a guy with that kind of hit tool, walks are just icing on the cake.

Oops, i haven’t noticed that Dan touched on that already…

You don’t worry about BBs when a guy is tearing the cover off the ball. You especially don’t worry about BBs when a guy is tearing the cover off the ball to the tune of 2Bs and HRs. The BBs will come when the pitchers start pitching around him, they are feeding him good pitches thus he is raking. Nothing to worry about.

I will bet every dollar I will ever earn in the rest of my life that not one person who talked endless shit about Hank being an ignorant blowhard will make notion of this quote in their columns or sports radio talk shows:

Steinbrenner said he hasn’t lost his patience with Hughes and Kennedy.

“They’re 21 and 23,” he said in Tampa, Fla., before Hughes went on the DL. “They’ve been thrown into the fire, and the fact is it will take time.”

Sadly, I don’t have a column or a sports radio talk show, but I have certainly talked shit (not sure about endless, but it hasn’t ended yet) about Hank being an ingnorant blowhard, and talked him up for having a healthy attitude about prospects and a lot more patience and common sense than his father. The two aren’t mutually exclusive. The interesting thing about Hank is that he seems to be just as psychotic as George, but his unhinged tirades are fueled by a much more sensible approach to running a baseball team. There’s a lot to be said for the improvement he represents over the previous generation, but, as much as I hate almost all MSM sports figures, I don’t see how you can fault them for saying Hank is an ignorant blowhard. He is an ignorant blowhard.
