Steve Phillips was once the GM of a large market Major League Baseball club

Get a load of this gem from Steve Phillips in a Mag article on how to fix the Reds: “Have owner Bob Castellini ring Hank Steinbrenner and tell him you’ve got a way to move Joba Chamberlain into the Yankees’ rotation. Offer Jared Burton, who’s whiffing hitters in bunches, and Jeremy Affeldt for Phil Hughes. Sell Burton as Chamberlain’s eighth-inning replacement and Affeldt as the situational lefty the Yanks lack.” Steve Phillips must think the Yankees’ GM is Steve Phillips. What’s Mo Vaughn up to these days, anyway?

This is why Steve Phillips is paid by ESPN and not by any Major League Baseball club. He’s a fool.

  2. Scott says:

Not to mention Roberto Alomar and Rodger Cedeno….

  3. Jamal G. says:

LoL, he made mention of this on the Red Sox/Tigers telecast on Monday. He didn’t say what it was just gave a preview but I expected it was of this sort. In a game a couple weeks ago he said GMs should be calling Hank Steinbrenner and “go around” Brian Cashman and offer some middle relief for Phil hughes.

Why does everyone think Hank is an idiot? People keep saying how he wants Joba Chamberlain in the rotation now, no ifs ands or buts. But if they actually read the entire quote he said there is a plan and that the organization is going through with said plan. I never understood what the big fuss was, other than people needed a story and they completely disregarded the second half of the fucking quote.

    What assholes.

  4. Joe says:

I don’t think I even understand this. He wants to trade to relievers for a potential #1 starter?

  5. Pete says:

Yeah, because everyone has a TON of respect for the Reds these days after they dumped Krivsky…

  6. Jon W. says:

If anyone in baseball thought Steve Phillips knew what he was talking about, he’d be running another club by now. I wonder if he’ll be holding a mock press conference on ESPN to announce this trade?

  7. Jamal G. says:

You know what’s sad, the Phil Hughes “idea” was not even the worst…

“Use Adam Dunn’s power as a chip to get pitchers…Go to Toronto and request a package that includes Adam Lind AND (!!!) Dustin McGowan or Shawn Marcum.”

It’s almost as if (and I’m being dead honest right here) that Steve Phillips is praying to the stars that someone will pull the trigger on a horrendous deal so people will stop thinking of him when it comes to the worst trades in recent memory. I really think he wants someone to screw up real bad so he finally is put on the afterburner.

  8. Alan says:

After reading this I’m left with one question: How the hell does this guy keep getting paychecks? Has Phillips suddenly taken up satirical writing or something? None of those deals are even close to reasonable.

  9. Cam says:

This is why it’s tough to watch Baseball Tonight anymore, cause you know this jackass is going to be sitting there just waiting to spill his wisdom all over our collective brains. Along with Kruk who now just goes on tirades until he is out of breath, and the assorted major leaugers who sit there and have no idea what’s going on, the only guy worth listening to is Buck Showalter. Oh, and web gems, even though those are questionable most of the time.

  10. tommiesmithjohncarlos says:

If we can get them to throw in Bill Bray and Gary Majewski, I’m on board…

  11. rbizzler says:

Hey Mike et al, not to distract the thread from the idiocy that is Steve Phillips, but did you see that the Braves have signed Colter Bean to a minor league deal and sent him to AAA?

The guys at ‘Free Colter Bean’ must be psyched, if that site even exists any more.

    • Ben K. says:

I think those guys are long gone. That site hasn’t been updated since last July. Some causes just aren’t worth the effort.

      • rbizzler says:

Not worth the effort?! Come on, it is for Colter, you know the guy with the 83 mph fastball and portly physique.

I think Joe Torre died a little inside each time he had to put him in a game as he was clearly not impressed.

this column is reminiscent of the moons who call the FAN with trade poposals such as Humberto Sanchez, Farnswoth, and Bruney for Velander or Cabrera. Hey, the Tigers are desperate for relief pitching.

Of course there is always the Met fan willing to part with Delgado for Hughes and Shelly Duncan.

Crap like this makes it really hard to take anything that espn analysts, except fo gammons,

  17. Bruno says:

I’d rather just use Phil Hughes as the 8th inning set-up man!

  18. Miles Roche says:

Mike, (totally off topic here, but) what’s the book on Alfredo Aceves, is he a prospect?
    What’s his ceiling/probability?

  19. Miles Roche says:

Mike, I believe my question is now more relevant than ever as Aceves is pitching a no-hitter through 5 on 1 walk and 6 or 7 strikeouts.
    So what’s his story?
