Things Goose Gossage does not like

By

Loud music.
Joba’s fist pump.
The Internets.
All you damn kids on his lawn.

Yet again, someone is foaming at the mouth over something that Joba does that tons of other MLB players do. Heaven forbid Joba gets a little excited. Meanwhile, Ed Valentine does a fantastic job at Bugs and Cranks disputing Gossage’s statements. Let the kids celebrate, he says; the Yankee Way is all about winning.

Goose is annoying. he’s basically the Curt Schilling of his era, he has something to say about everything, but gets a pass b/c he was a Yankee.

    • barry

I agree, there is a right and wrong way to do things. That’s the wrong way. Not to mention the man is now irrelevant in baseball, no one gives two shits what he thinks.

  • barry

i sense jealousy. Honestly it’s not like Joba sucks and goes out there pumps his fist, he’s dominate. I think a lot of players don’t understand how this rookie with hardly any innings has become some sort of hero to NY fans. Honestly there isn’t anything wrong with the fist pump. I suppose fans should stop curtain calls as well because it would hurt the opposing teams pitcher’s feelings.

On an unrelated note, Cox was promoted to AAA and Melancon was promoted to AA.

    • Guiseppe Franco

Where did you hear/read this? Could you provide a link?

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Ben K.

Our Sports Central has the news. When we hear from our man Chad, Mike will let you know.

        • Guiseppe Franco

          Thanks, Ben. Appreciate it.

Chad said last night that because he said Cox wasn’t going to get promoted just yet was essentially guaranteeing that Cos was getting promoted.

          Oh, how right he was.

This is like Black Friday. The official start of the holiday season (Joba to the rotation) and now everything is coming into sight, happy days are a comin’.

    • Brandon

Joba to rotation conversion coming soon

  • Jeff

What about K-Rod? He’s been doing it for a while and he’s a lot worse.

    • barry

And he’s good so it’s hard to say anything after he just shuts down your team’s last hopes.

  • RustyJohn

I belive that if the most important thing a person has to comment on in any given day is a fist-pump (sounds like some sort of sexual device) then maybe they should get employed somewhere or volunteer in their spare time. Work with lepers, to quote Tony Montana.

  • Jon W.

This all “Yankee Way” thing is such nonsense. Why is it okay for the 2003 Red sox to look like vagrants, but Joba can’t pump his fist after a strikeout because it’s not the Yankee Way? For some reason, the Yankees are held to a different standard. And considering the antics of some of Goose’s teammates, his comments come off as more than a little hypocritical.

    • Whitey14

Well, to be fair, yankee fans have put the team up on that pedestal and although everyone here knows I root for Boston, I feel like the yankees deserve that pedestal because they’ve almost always (mid-to-late 70’s, and some of Ruth’s purported antics aside) shown a great deal of class on the field.

And not all Sox fans were okay with the idiot look. If I ever have a son and he wants to grow his hair long like Damon did, I’ll call him my second daughter because that’s what guys with long hair look like….girls!

Most young players these days, especially pitchers who don’t have to hit, have some sort of showboat in them. It’s what they’ve grown up watching over the past 20 years. The players all are friendly with each other these days due to Free Agency and ever changing rosters so they haven’t held each other accountable on the field like they used to. Even though I still think what shelley duncan did in ST was wrong, I’m glad he understands the need to hold the other team accountable. There should be more of that these days.

Those are just my opinions…now if Manny would just cut his friggin’ hair and stop claiming to be the best Left Fielder in Red Sox history…..

Another thing Goose doesn’t like: 21st century facial grooming. What decade does he think this is, anyways?

  • http://www.myspace.com/j_panama Jamal G.

I don’t know who I want to throw eggs at more, Rich Gossage or Nelson Figueroa.

    • barry

Or that fucking guy on those commercials, Guisepe Franco?

  • steve (different one)

maybe if Joba traded wives with Kennedy, that would be more like the Yankee way Goose remembers from his days.

    • Whitey14

Classic, way to dig deep Steve ;-)

Remember what I said about Black Friday, make it two-fold.

    Per PeteAbe:

That Joe Girardi is one hands-on manager.

As I write this from The Trop, he’s in the bullpen catching Andrew Brackman. Humberto Sanchez is warming up next.

    • J.R.

Wow, thats devotion from a manager. Maybe a little compulsive even.

      • A.D.

Wants to see what stuff they have up close

  • Joey

whats with some of these older Yanks? First Paulie makes himself seem like a total asshole and now Goose is making himself seem like a cranky old man wanting to bitch about something. Geesh, let it go guys

  • bkight13

It’s OK for Joba to fist pump because it works for him. He has passion and he shows it. He didn’t like Delucci beating him and costing the team a win. He was excited that he bounced right back from a bad loss. Everybody that complains about these guys are way too uptight. These guys are playing a game for a living not brokering peace in the Middle East.

Who the hell is Goose Gossage to throw stones. How “Yankee” was it to get into a fight with his own teammate (Cliff Johnson) injure himself (jerk), and effectively cost the Yankees any shot at the 1979 pennant. Guidry had to briefly try his hand as a relief pitcher (costing the Yanks their best starter) and by the time he got back to the team they were so far behind Baltimore the season was over. What would Joe D have said about that.

Goose was one of the most flamboyant players of his era, so for him to have the nerve to question Joba, well let’s give Goose the goose at old timers day.

    • RustyJohn

I believe what Mr. Gossage is engaging in is known as revisionist history.

  • pete

does anybody who doesn’t write on this site watch this team? The offense is stagnant, the pitching predictably unreliable, and the whole process is practically boring. i’ll take anything if it means giving this team some energy. I’d love it if the yankees-redsox rivalry grew heated and dirty and there were some brawls and stuff. And if a brawl started b/c joba threw at Youkilis’s head again, I’d love it even more. I’d rather be hated but winning and exciting than a team full of pleasant, decent guys who are perfectly happy to take a loss or a win.

  • Whitey14

Well, if you advocate throwing at guys heads, you will certainly be hated ;-)

I maintain the intensity will not return to the rivalry until they meet in the playoffs (or a playoff type scenario) again.

Also, most of these guys are friendly with each other off the field. They know each other so well and they’re all part of the same fraternity. They do ads and promotions together (Ortiz/Jeter and Ortiz/Posada for example) and the hatred just doesn’t exist for most of them. There is no Fisk/Munson comparison that I can see.

The intensity came in recent years because the yanks had so many titles and the Sox hadn’t won one in years, but were obviously getting closer to winning one. There is no 1918, 1918, 1918 to chant anymore which was the most popular thing to get on Sox and Sox fans about and getting on a team and it’s fans because they’re in a whopping 7 year drought seems ignorant. There’s not much to talk about as both teams were building around youth this year and both teams have received dissapointing contributions (in total) from that youth.

who cares what gossage likes or dislikes…he had his turn in the barrel..now its other players turn to do what they want to do…
