Game 99: Johnny’s back, but it’s probably too soon

By

It’s nice to have Johnny Damon back atop the lineup, especially considering that the Yanks score 1.22 more runs per game when he’s playing, but am I the only one that thinks a minor league rehab stint would be in order, even if it was just a 3-gamer with the nearby Staten Island Yanks? I mean, he last played in a game on the 4th of July, so it’s been 17 days since he faced live pitching. Plus check this out: with the Damon in the lineup, the Yanks are 41-41, but without him they’re 12-4. I dunno about you, but I smell a nice 0-fer coming tonight.

While getting Damon back is big news, the far bigger news is that Jorge Posada has been placed on the DL and is probably done for the year. While his throwing has deterioriated immensely, his bat remained a weapon (109 OPS+) and downright Ruthian compared to Jose Molina (48 OPS+, yikes). Luckily the 3rd Annual Robinson Cano Second Half Surge has begun, but the Yanks are still going to need some other guys to pick up the slack (I’m lookin’ at you, kid). Maybe they can buy low Josh Bard, who’s currently playing in rehab games after having his season derailed by Albert Pujols.

1. Damon, DH
2. Jeter, SS
3. Abreu, RF
4. A-Rod, 3B
5. Giambi, 1B
6. Cano, 2B
7. Melky, CF
8. Molina, C
9. Gardner, LF

And on the mound, the Amazin’ Arubian, Sidney Ponson.

  1. batty says:

It’s a blow but Posada really wasn’t helping out anyone right now, this will open up some possibilities on the bench.

    • batty says:

Sorry, meant DH spot. Pretty much the same right now though.

      • whozat says:

Juan Miranda? Unless they ALSO have private concerns about Damon’s shoulder. He doesn’t help against lefties, but this’d look ok against righties:

        Damon LF
        Jeter SS
        Abreu RF
        ARod 3B
        Giambi 1B
        Cano 2B
        Miranda DH
        Molina C
        Cabrera CF

  2. Chris says:

Just to go back to the issue of Jorge’s contract… I think it’s foolish to judge that so early in the contract. For example, at this point in Beltran’s contract with the Mets, he had a 755 OPS, and it was obvious to anyone that the contract was a disaster. Except for the fact that he turned it around and is now one of the best CF in the league.

  3. Joey H says:

i think the straw that broke the camels back was posada’s july avg. i think i remember them saying posadas arm doesnt hurt its just inability. but if you ask me this couldnt have happened at a better time with posada leaving, this is a fairly quick team.

  4. Joey H says:

oh and on MLBTR they said that duscherer(spelling) is probably available. what would you think a bout the bombers getting him or would bean just break cashmans balls too hard and thats it?

    • whozat says:

Hasn’t it been said repeatedly that Duch is pitching way, way over his head? His BABIP is way, way below league average, and his K rate is poor as well.

Remember Brian Bannister’s 2007? Solid year, authored primarily on the back of an unsustainably low BABIP. Look at him now. Duch is a prime candidate to have the same kind of fall to earth.

Especially if you put him in front of the Yankee defense instead of the A’s defense.

Could he be decent? Oh, certainly. That’s very possible. But, to pay for him like he’s an All-Star when the likelihood is you’ll wind up with a guy who’s kind of average? Boo.

Similar with Nady. Buying him now, you’ll pay like he’s a perennial 130 OPS+ guy. When he goes back to being a 105 OPS+ corner OFer, you’ll be SOL.

      • whozat says:

For the rest of the trade season the RAB guys should put a button on the page that just inserts duch’s (properly spelled) name into the comment box :-)

      • Joey H says:

well say he ends up being average as you say which is totally sensable, we can have an average 13 game winner behind joba wang pettite next year. thats not so bad man. considering hes not even making 2 mill i think

        • whozat says:

Did you just read straight past this part of what I said?

“to pay for him like he’s an All-Star when the likelihood is you’ll wind up with a guy who’s kind of average?”

It’d be a classic case of buying high, and I’m not talking about money.

        • TheLastClown says:

Money’s not a problem for the Yanks, especially next year. I believe they’ll get CC or Sheets, maybe both? Fingers crossed.

The issue with Duchscherer is maybe he crashes back to earth THIS year

          • Joey H says:

ok this really shows how much you know, do you really think they can take on two hundred million dollar contracts?! c’mon mannnnnnnnn. thats insane! i get they are the yankees and all but still. maybe not two 100 mill contracts cause of sheets injury history but c’mon. not both.

            • christopher says:

they have done it before…whats the difference if they take on 11 miilion dllar contacts 4 yeasrs straight – why not 2 in one year

  5. RustyJohn says:

That is an ugly bottom third of the line-up- can Mussina play center, left or catch? His bat may be more potent.

Really though, why don’t they play Moeller more? Yes, he isn’t Josh Gibson back there, but I have a hard time believing that he hits worse than Molina.

  6. Haggs says:

I don’t get how Posada went from here a few weeks ago (via LoHud)….

Privately, however, Posada has expressed his dissatisfaction with Joe Girardi’s decision to start Jose Molina in each of the Yankees’ last six games – including Thursday night’s makeup game with the Pirates – according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

“I like to catch. Okay?” Posada said. “I’m in the lineup and I’m happy that I’m in the lineup, but I like to catch. I’m a catcher. I’m not a first baseman and I’m not a DH. I like to catch, so I’m looking forward to catching (today).”

    To here today…..

“The shoulder is messed up. I have no power when I go to make a throw and there’s pain every time I make a throw. It has been like that all season.”

Why would he criticize Girardi’s decision if he knew he shouldn’t be catching?

    • TheLastClown says:

Maybe a pride thing? Look at every time Jeter’s hurt, he vehemently denies it. These guys make a lot of money, and my bet is most of them want to feel like they’re earning it.

    • Joey H says:

thats exactly why i said this guy wont appreciate being moved to first and becasue he is such a “vocal” leader they will always give him what he wants, georgey, you arent an allstar catcher anymore!

      • TheLastClown says:

If he’s healthy, and can bring his bat back to life, he’ll have to “appreciate” moving to first.

Also, nothing really exists to say whether or not he’ll be able to throw post-surgery. This may be a moot point.

I personally don’t like the contract ONLY because if or when he transitions to first, it may coincide with having to move Jeter there, whom I think will be an EXCELLENT first basemen.

        • whozat says:

Jeter’s bat isn’t even adequate for a SS right now. Moving him to 1B would be a huge offensive hole for the team. If you’re going to bring in another SS and move Jeter, send him to CF. His bat’d be tolerable there, and Jackson’s a couple years away.

        • Joey H says:

absolutely, but heres a question, what happens if we sign texiera this offseason? then we have no spot to put our old veterans anymore right..

          • TheLastClown says:

That is one of the reasons they won’t sign Tex, I feel. They’ve got a lot of potential offense as it is, plus he’s going to command a really big contract, $$ and years wise.

            • Joey H says:

but we (yankee organization) needs to get away from this word that cashman has come to love” potiental” lol potiental has phil hughes 0-4 with a 9 era. nahhh meannnn? lol

              • TheLastClown says:

Nahhh meannnn? what does that mean?

Potential had Phil Hughes come in, in a handicapped post season situation, and sparkle with his velocity, command, and tenacity.

A broken rib is what had him underperform this year.

You like to blame injuries on the guys that bear them. Why?

                • Joey H says:

its supposed to be a joke, like “knowwhat i mean” guess you dont have much of a personality. hughes was hurt in his LAST start with the yankees, they said he could have pitched through it so dont go and make it like its a huge deal.

                • Joey says:

I think it means “you know what I mean” But Hughes pitched who knows how many games with a broken rib, he has the command, velocity, and just raw stuff to flash ace potential, the only thing he hasn’t shown us is he can stay healthy and he is still very very young, so at this moment no you shouldn’t be concerned about him. I don’t know enough to really talk about the scouting aspect that intelligently, thats Mike and Jamal, but I’d rather have Hughes and his potential for years to come than trade him and our farm away for a rental. Plus, Joba has amazing potential but you don’t seem to be complaining about him, he’s blazing through ML lineups (of course this pitch count thing, I know)

                • TheLastClown says:

If it isn’t a big deal how come he’s out for months on end? The Yankees said he probably DID pitch through it, to the losing tune you’d like to crucify him for.

Interpreting phonetic typed slang isn’t exactly a measure of personality Joe

                • Joey says:

he’s 22 years old man, and yes sarcasm and shit is hard to detect on boards like these, sorry if I misinterpreted it

                • Joey H says:

the thing is, they could have pitched him through it, i remember them saying so when they put him on the DL we know the office considers him to be like a godsend and dont wanna risk it but sure thats fine. the problem at hand is that we need to stop with this young potiental stuff, and get PROOVEN players. tex is great for the yankees a switch hitting first baseman with an above average glove.

                • TheLastClown says:

Joey, I wasnt talking to you, I was talking to Joey H…..who said I must have no personality, sorry about the cross up.

And as for you Joey H. No matter how many capital or extra letters you use, I disagree, so does Brian Cashman, and thats that.

                • Joey H says:

listen man you are talking about getting sheets and sabathia so i cant take anything you say seriously.

                • TheLastClown says:

And you truly believe that they could have “pitched him through” an injury that shut him down for four months? Do you not see the absurdity of that?

                  Hip Hip JOSE!

                  Im arguing & watching :)

                • TheLastClown says:

Ok, and Im talking about getting them in the offseason when we’ll have all kinds of money to spend, and they’re both entering Free Agency. I know its a long shot to get both of them, but its feasible, it won’t cost prospects, and I like to hope big.

                • Joseph P. says:

You sound like you’re 12, so you probably don’t remember the disastrous trades in the 80s of young potential for “PROOVEN’ players.

                • Joey H says:

i know what yo uare talking about its obviously not gonna happen now when they are in the middle of a divisional race. and i said from the begining the team said he could have pitched thru it but it wasnt worth the risk. and yo uare still insane if you think two aces will sign with the yankees. i dotn know what video game you are playing where you do this but its not the “cashman” way

                • Joey H says:

thats real tough of you joseph. call me a 12 year old.

                • Mike A. says:

Chill out, we’re all hear to talk about the game. No reason to be obnoxious or call someone names. This goes for everyone here.

                • Joey H says:

yup thats what im doing lol, trying to get people to understand that ben sheets and CC sabathia arent going to both be yankees next year lol

                • Joey H says:

yep just trying to get people to understand sheets and sabatia wont both be yankees next year

                • Joey H says:

sorry for the double it didnt show up the first time

                • Joseph P. says:

It’s not being tough. It’s bringing into consideration your horrible spelling/grammar — which is just an observation, not an insult — and your specious reasoning.

                • Joey H says:

yeah my horrible speech and grammar, its called typing fast pal.

                • I just can’t stop laughing. You’re like the end of the Benny Hill show, where everything is in fast motion…

                • cult of basebaal says:

i’m telling you, he’s the next andy kaufmann. he’s brilliant

                • Joey H says:

sure… read the whole thing. or stay out of it =)

            • christopher says:

for the price of trx yhey can get burrell and dunn…maybe even vlad and someone…how noice would vld (a winning playe) fo whatever that is woth patroling right field. dunn plays lf for a year and then moves to Dh

  7. TheLastClown says:

Michael Kay thinks of the Home Run Derby not in terms of rounds, but in terms of stanzas….I always knew you were a poet Michael…..

  8. The Fallen Phoenix says:

I miss watching Yankee games without listening to Michael Kay. Why couldn’t he stay on vacation?

  9. E-ROC says:

Well, I guess A-Rod decided he’ll pick up Posada’s production.

  10. Ivan says:

No Kay, Santana is a great player not Torii Hunter.

  11. alex says:

AROD…BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO (remember when stupid people used to do that?)

  12. TheLastClown says:

Why didn’t Delmon Young score from 2nd on a hit *not that I’m complaining*

    I just didn’t see it….

  13. TheLastClown says:

One of the worst calls Ive ever seen

  14. Ivan says:

Well it’s not like they are scorching the ball off ponson but overall he has to pitch a little bit better.

  15. pete says:

not great blocking by molina, but still, you can see the fingers bend back from being tagged. On a not-so-close play like that (especially with that throw from abreu), if you’re going to call him out, he better actually be out.

  16. J says:

Another Melky slide into 1st and the ball wasn’t even thrown by the SS!!!!! After Kei Igawa’s existence, that is my least favorite thing in yankeeland.

  17. daneptizl says:

Mike, whattya think Max Ramirez costs? Horne or McCutchen with 2 relievers would do it?

    • Mike A. says:

Considering he’s been traded for Bob Wickman and Kenny Lofton, straight up in separate deals, in the past, it shouldn’t take much. He’s still a prospect, so who knows how good he’ll be.

  18. Joey says:

    great AB Molina

  19. TheLastClown says:

Ok, so everyones gonna pick up Posada….this is what I like to see….time to cash em in

  20. Ryan says:

Who would have thought that Melky, Molina, and BG would all get hits in the same inning?

  21. giselle says:

wow. gardner’s clutch. seems like he always gets a big hit with risp.

  22. Mike A. says:

    Terrible play by Casilla.

  23. Joey says:

Cap’n (GIDP) Jetes is up with bases loaded. Do I smell 2nd GS of career?

  24. TheLastClown says:

    Cap’M CLUUUUUUUUTCH!

  25. Joey says:

we need 7 or 8 more runs this inning to be safe with Sir Sidney on the mound

  26. Mike A. says:

Michael Kay is back in full force.

Just think, this weekend we’ll get Kay on Friday, Buck & McCarver on Saturday, then Morgan on Sunday. We really do deserve an award for that.

  27. Mike A. says:

Nick Blackburn doing his best IPK impression. ;)

  28. Joey says:

Question: Can Ponson last any longer than Blackburn?

  29. E-ROC says:

I guess the real New York Yankees are finally standing up.

  30. E-ROC says:

    The Boof is loose!

  31. giselle says:

    cano’s on fire!!

    • TheLastClown says:

Red hot, I love it :) Just imagine if/when he has a career year & is consistent throughout the whole season

      • giselle says:

i love his swing, too. everyone talks about how pretty it is. it’s just that much more beautiful when he’s swinging and actually hitting the ball well.

  32. Joey says:

I think Robbie is feelin okay. Just a guess

  33. The Fallen Phoenix says:

Someone on that coaching staff needs to tell Cano that when the season starts on April 1st, it’s actually June 1st, and that it’s not an April Fool’s Joke.

  34. Ryan says:

    this is awesome

  35. TheLastClown says:

BG w/ a squeeze? I want to see it

    • giselle says:

i’ve been dying for a suicide squeeze from the yankees. it’ll never happen, though.

      • BigBlueAL says:

Last one I remember is Girardi squeezing in Strawberry at Baltimore in 1996. Im sure there has at least been another since then, but thats the last one I remember.

      • TheLastClown says:

Even a safety would satisfy me. Especially up a bunch of runs, why not? Of course Johnny doubled him in anyway, so here’s to giving the devil *I mean Girardi* his due.

        • Mike A. says:

Nah, if you’re going to do then you have to wait until it’s a close game. Squeezes rely on the element of surprise, so squeezing in 8-2 games will take the surprise out of play somewhat.

  36. BigBlueAL says:

How about Meacham actually holding runners up tonight!!!!

  37. Mike A. says:

Yankees, this is Momentum. Momentum, Yankees. It’s about time you two have met.

  38. Joey H says:

great defense, great hitting, power, somewhat okay pitching, a team that will make the playoffs lol

  39. TheLastClown says:

That may have been the most graceful dive I’ve ever seen out of Melky

  40. Chris says:

Why did Melky dive for that ball? Doesn’t he know it’s faster to run through it?

  41. Ryan says:

is that Brett Gardner in a Twins uniform?

  42. Joey H says:

okay if michael kay says gracious or beautiful or lovely again im gong to barf allover my desk

  43. Joey H says:

Hey does anyone know the last time we knocked out a starter before the 3rd inning?

  44. LiveFromNewYork says:

You have to earn your way into the playoffs. That’s news to me.

  45. Mike A. says:

Haha. Kay’s talking about how no fluky teams make the playoffs, that the talent will win out, then he mentions the Rox won 21 of their last 22 this year to get in.

  46. LiveFromNewYork says:

It would be a shorter list to list the Yankees NOT injured this year.

  47. Newman says:

Anyone see any way that Ponson is not lit up on Sunday Night Baseball? I’m not trying to rain on the parade at all, and I’m thrilled we’re starting to string together some wins, but I mean, his whip has been around 2 since he came here. He’s been extremely lucky to not have been smacked around all 3 of his previous starts

  48. Joey says:

Yea, don’t think the AS game effected Kazmir in the least bit (5 IP, 0 ER, 7 K)

    • Joey H says:

yeah i say everyone goes on a 4 man rotation lol this way we wont have to deal with rasner! but yea didnt they do it with 2-3 man rotations back in CY youngs day?

  49. Ivan says:

Hey Mike who would ya take Russell or Maur.

    • Mike A. says:

I’ve thought about it, and I’ll take Martin. More power, more speed, more durable. Can’t go wrong either way though.

      • TheLastClown says:

His D in the ASG was absolutely remarkable

        • And Russell Martin may be on the market at some point in the next couple of years. He’ll be in Arb years soon, and he’ll ask for (and get) big paydays. The Dodgers tried to buy out his arb years, Cano-style, and he was having none of that. They won’t give him away, but they’ll listen

The Twins won’t let Mauer out of Minnesota until he’s on his deathbed. He’s from St. Paul, schoolboy legend, he was the #1 overall, he’s a good square-jawed white boy who keeps his nose clean and his uniform dirty and churns out .300 seasons like butter. Unlike Torii, Johan, Morneau, Nathan, etc., he became the face of that franchise the day he signed. He’s the new Brett Favre.

  50. whozat says:

Is Casilla for real? Or playing over his head?

  51. TheLastClown says:

3 year old Joe Mauer was too dangerous to play with the other kids……awesome

  52. giselle says:

    joe mauer is so hot.

  53. Joey says:

    6-6-3 DP? Wow… just wow

  54. Mike A. says:

Did Kay just drop a David Clyde reference? Holy schnikees.

  55. TheLastClown says:

Technical question….if you’re filling out a scorecard…do you score that DP 6-6-3 or just 6-3?

  56. Ivan says:

Hey ponson can give me 6IP of 3 or 4 run ball that’s cool.

  57. TheLastClown says:

Theres a bit on MLBTR about Yanks scouting Burnett…I know its just scouting, but what would you guys think of that? I think they’ll ask more from the Yanks than from others, on account of division rivalry, but does he own any other teams besides that Yankees?

    Thoughts anyone?

  58. Joey says:

lol, ESPN’s picture for Adam Jones:

    http://assets.espn.go.com/i/ml.....0/7812.jpg

  59. TheLastClown says:

    Welcome Jose Posada :)

  60. Joey says:

I’d love to see Gardner hit a triple right now and round Molina on the bases (I know its bad, but it would be hysterical)

  61. Newman says:

Any other G-Men fans THRILLED with the trade of Shockey? In my eyes it came 3 months too late. We should’ve taken this deal from the Saints on draft day, especially coming off a year where they sucked and they were near the top of the 2nd round

    • LiveFromNewYork says:

good player but bad team guy

I had hoped he would change his attitude and be an asset

    • Ivan says:

good trade for both teams. Shockey would certainly help the saints and Shockey was addition by subtraction for the Giants and had some solid picks.

      It’s Eli’s team now.

      • Newman says:

Definitely agree. One of the major problems though with Shockey despite the obvious whining and distractions was his inability to stay on the field. He’ll be a nice weapon for the Saints in the 10 games or so he plays in per season

    • Chris says:

Peter King mentioned a potential deal of Shockey to Saints, 2nd and 5th rounders to Miami, and Taylor to Giants. This seems like a better trade for the Giants and Miami than the actual deal.

    • Dave P. says:

I need to see a little more of Kevin Boss before I trade away a player like Shockey.

  62. giselle says:

…the hell’s wrong with the HP ump tonight? or every night, for that matter?

  63. Joey H says:

i think its time we got molina a nickname. any ideas?

  64. LiveFromNewYork says:

Why is the Stadium so noisy? The thing I HATE about the Stadium this year is all the riff raff (ie non-Yankee fans) that come to see it before it closes.

    • TheLastClown says:

Well they bring all kinds of money, the money that allows our team to be what it is, or what it could be, so why hate on them?

I’d go to Fenway if it was getting demolished….or Wrigley for that matter

      • Joey H says:

i would rather get the demolition of fenway on DVD. preferably if they duct tape manny to the wrecking ball. and hwo about hta 0-29 against ramirez,

      • LiveFromNewYork says:

Yankee fans bring the money. We don’t need out of towners. They do the wave and shit.

  65. Joey H says:

almost as bad as bandwagon tampa bay fans huh? lol

  66. cult of basebaal says:

jebus, between the suburban trash, the wall-street trash and the riff-raff trash, what’s a “TRUE” yankee fan to do?

  67. Newman says:

Please Cash, find another starter somewhere on the market to pitch in Boston on Sunday night

  68. TheLastClown says:

    Golf clap for Sir Sidney….

  69. Chris says:

At what point do you pull the plug on the Gardner experiment? He hits less than Melky, walks less, and strikes out more. I’m not saying now is the time, but how long do you keep him in the everyday lineup – through the end of July?

    • TheLastClown says:

My guess is when Johnny is healthy enough to play left, rather than just hit, Gardner will be the best late game pinch running weapon we’ve seen since….Homer Bush?

    • Joey H says:

im getting sick of it myself. he looks lost at the plate, picking the wrong pitches to go after. ive seen him pop out far too many times. his speed is useless without getting him on base. and i think my 12 runs will be good for them tonight

      • JT says:

If we get our top of the lineup hitting again, we wouldn’t have to worry about whatever Gardner gives us.

      • giselle says:

i think you gotta give the kid at least a few more weeks to show what he can do. nobody’s patient with young players anymore… look what he did against papelblowsanothergame. gardner is good, he just needs to get acclimated to the league.

        • Joey H says:

yeah i think a send down will actually hurt him to contradict what i sayed before. he needs the experience like giselle said. the only reason we should send him down is if we find our selves in a situation where he isnt seeing any time.

    • cult of basebaal says:

he ain’t cutting it. when damon is healthy, the best thing to do is send him down. christian can provide speed off the bench and is right-handed, so he can spell an outfielder on a day that a good LHP pitches.

gardner is better off playing everyday in AAA and trying to build upon what he’s learned in his time in NY.

  70. TurnTwo says:

with MAtt Carson having another couple hits tonight, any chance we give him a shot, and let Christian or Gardner go back down?

  71. Mike A. says:

Hats off to Sidney. Outside of that beatdown at the hands of Texas, he’s been dowright decent.

    • Newman says:

And downright lucky for the most part. I wonder how many 1-2-3 innings he’s thrown since he’s been here. I will obviously take the results, but I just hope the front office isn’t delusional enough to think he can pitch even this decently for the rest of the year

    • Ivan says:

yea he has been lucky more than good but you take what he gives ya.

  72. JT says:

    that 1-1 pitch and 1-2 was filthnasty….

  73. RollingWave says:

Hey it’s the Edwar we sign up for last year!

  74. TheLastClown says:

Im glad Michael Kay doesn’t invoke Bugs Bunny every time we see Edwar anymore

  75. Joey H says:

to the three amigos — on getting a catchernow — do you think this would take away from cash making anymore moves if he decides to go out and get a catcher? cause we know GMs can be a little reluctant to shake up the team too much mid season

    • Mike A. says:

If the price is right, he’ll do it. Who’s realistically available though? Bard and Laird? That’s it.

      • Joey H says:

no i know im going on a suggestion you made before. but if they do make that move to get a catcher do you think it will stop them from making more moves where voids are? E.G. starter – corner outfield bat?

        • christopher says:

i would rather put up with molina because of his defense and add a bat in th OF and a 4th sttarter.

if this team thinks it can makes the playoffs the olny way to do damage is witha better offense and a 4th stater.

that is why burnett intrigues me. joba, pettite moose and burnett sounds ike a good playoff rotation. have a feeling AJ would pith very well in a playoff situation – seems to pitch better in big games – i..e his success against the yankees.

  76. Peedlum says:

Can anyone tell me what that whistling sound is after every yankee pitcher strike out? I can hear it in the background, but not loud enough to make it out clearly.

  77. Alright, I’m convinced.

Sidney Ponson is going to go 7-2 down the stretch, Mike Mussina is going to win 20 games, Cano, Jeter, and Abreu are going to share the AL batting title, Sexson and Molina are going to hit 10 homers each, and the Yankees are going to win it all, not because they want to… it’ll be just to spite everyone.

  78. JT says:

Too bad Kay is back in the booth tonight. I was enjoying singleton and cone. I was hoping Kay did something wrong and was getting cut back by YES.

  79. Mike A. says:

    Paralysis by analysis?

  80. JT says:

It’s an actual phrase. But they call it “analysis paralysis”.

  81. LiveFromNewYork says:

Bobby sucks defensively but he knows his shit.

  82. LiveFromNewYork says:

Joe Mauer is one pissed catcher. I like him too.

  83. Joey H says:

lol here is something everyone who has ever listened to a yankee game on the radio can appreciate.. if you dont mind taking out a minute from this “nail biter” http://youtube.com/watch?v=dDPfV8qljHM

  84. Damn straight that was a jeterian swing, Mr. Kay…

And that offering from Breslow was downright varitekian, i’d say.

  85. RollingWave says:

Woo.. the Dodgers scored 7 run using 1 out in the game so far (a Andruw Jones strike out of course)

btw, wtf is David Robertson’s gameday pic?

  86. LiveFromNewYork says:

    Robertson rules.

  87. RollingWave says:

Is this game Hawkin’s proof yet?

    • Jersey says:

Seems like it. But a Hawkins Implosion always strikes when you least expect it.

Hawkins Implosion. Sounds like a band.

  88. LiveFromNewYork says:

Notice all the people not wearing Yankee gear? Riff raff.

  89. Mike A. says:

    Hava Molina! Jorge who?

  90. LiveFromNewYork says:

Molina is looking for that 50 mil contract. Jorge who?

  91. LiveFromNewYork says:

Kay complaining about the grass. He’s so into neatness.

  92. Mike A. says:

WTF? Why pinch hit Moeller for Damon? Why not PH him for Molina and give him the rest of the day off?

    • TurnTwo says:

maybe Moeller is pitching tomorrow with Rasner on the mound… you know, the good ol’ Scranton boys?

    • cult of basebaal says:

because if molina gets injured, you can still use moeller to sub in for him. you lose the DH but you have the 2nd catcher as backup.

  93. LiveFromNewYork says:

When I look quickly and Dave Robertson is on the screen I always think it’s Phil Hughes. Do they look alike or is it me?

  94. Brian says:

    wha happon

according to gameday, chad moeller was deemed out before he even got in the game.

  95. Is Wilson Betemit the first ever late-inning “defenseless” replacement ever?

  96. I like how Kay was actually making an intelligent point for a second there about giving Girardi credit for keeping faith in Farnsworth and how it contributed to his renaissance this year…

…and then he fucked it up by saying that that “gave him the courage” to transition Joba to the pen. It’s like he’s got an internal metronome that won’t let him not say something stupid for more than 90 seconds.

  97. Joey H says:

hmm. well. how many okay outings for hawkins is this? 3? i understand they are in blowout games but can we at least get a few bags of baseballs for him?

  98. Manimal says:

Anyone else notice Latroy is not taking his hand out of his glove like he used to prior to his motion torward the plate? And hes much more overhand.

  99. Joey says:

    when it rains…

  100. LiveFromNewYork says:

Girardi’s head is always spinning. Even when he’s made bad decisions at least he’s not sleeping in the dug out.

  101. Chris says:

Derek Jeter Uno Cards? You’ve got to be kidding me. How desperate are they for give aways?

  102. r.w.g. says:

Michael Kay saying “my bad”. Classic.

  103. Mike A. says:

Dan Giese has thrown 1 inning in the last 18 days.

  104. LiveFromNewYork says:

can you imagine if we still had our old backup catchers?

    shudder.

  105. giselle says:

you called those 12 runs, joey h!

  106. Manimal says:

Molina is so Humble. Why doesn’t he just say he has the best arm in the League and Jorge should sit.

  107. Manimal says:

brewers blew the lead and came back in the top of the 10th with 3 runs to lead 6-3.

  108. Manimal says:

    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/.....r-mar.html

Who is the best fit for the yankees? Would the Orioles or Toronto really trade with us?

  109. Brian says:

wow. look at that mariner lineup. so much for making up some ground. i guess we’ll just have to sweep the Twins to be sure.

  110. Brian says:

hah. mlb’s immedi-article on the game is entitled “ponson gets his fill”
the allusions to grubbery will never cease with that guy.

in other news, a-rod’s two-run shot in the first proved to be unnecessary because the Yankees scored ten runs after that. puh-lease, a-rod.

  111. 1-Damon DH
    2-Jeter SS
    3-Abreu RF
    4-ARod 3B
    5-Giambi 1B
    6-Cano 2B

If those six have it going (and every day, it looks more and more like they do), it won’t matter who we have in right, center, and behind the plate. We’ll be fine. Any offense we get from Melky, Gardner, and Molina is gravy.

I don’t even want to wait for Posada or Matsui to get healthy… shut them both down and target 2009. The minute that Damon is healthy enough to play the field, sign Jon Dowd. Then we only have two offensive holes, and they’d be filled by plus defensive players… that’s plenty.

  112. Manimal says:

Will the real Pat Vendette please stand up.

  113. Jake H says:

Has anyone else noticed that Hawkins changed his delivery?

  114. christopher says:

i never thought i would say it but i am thinking playoffs now. if this team wants to escape the1st round, ponson cannot stat game 4. burnett is a good fit and should be eap and they need a bat, preerably a young OF who can be here for yea\rs to come – holliday would be perfect and i would give up a lot to get him as he is not a rental rather a long term soklcution.. burnett as a 4th stater is nasty in a playoff scenario and shoud not cost much because of his horrible contract situation.

btw, harden had a no-no through 6 inningss. that is a guy, despite his injury backround i wanted to have, but alas he is gone and burnett is there and could be had cheap if he pitches ohorrible he stays, otherwise he opts out, but the yanks can always resign hi. imgine a 2009 rotation of

    sabathia
    wang
    petitte
    joba
    burnett

with hughes in the pen, spot starting and coming in when an injury omes a long, little pressure. if you have a chance to get a guy with burnett’s talent you take it unless you wasnt ponsonpitching game 4. that is scary.

really think burnett will be cheap as the jasy wnt to get rid of him desperatly. we re woried of the contract – tink of what a team with a modest payroll who cannot afford to either extend him or pay 24 million of 2 years for a bad pitcher – the yankes can absorb that

IPK and a lowe tier prospect should get it done – the equivalendt of 2 first roud picks, one ready to pitch in MLB net year. besides IPK is expendable next year if they get sabathia. burnett or hughes can handle it and if not, i am sure someone ill step upt in thn the organization wil have gotten to that pint – horne???

  115. christopher says:

the big question is – can this tem make the pkayoffs??? if so burnett and a good hitting LF or cf needs to happen. cannot have molina, grader and melky ion the plsyoff’s starting 9 3 easy ous and you may as well packit in come otober
