Game 143: Moose searching for number 18

By

Mike Mussina has won 18 games five times, but he hasn’t accomplished this feat since 2002. Today, in Seattle, he’s gunning for his 18th victory of the year. If he nails the W today, he’ll have 20 in his sights. If not, he’ll have to win three of his last four starts.

Originally scheduled to face him was Carlos Silva, and it’s too bad that Silva’s back is acting up. Against the Yankees, Silva has been nothing short of terrible in his career. But alas, the Yanks will instead face Ryan Feierabend, a 23-year-old with some unimpressive Major League numbers.

    get loose, Moose!

and let’s pray the yankees’ bats are not stymied by yet another URP.

  2. giselle says:

i know this is completely random, but why does jeter nod his head as soon as he’s ready to step into the box? its like he’s giving the pitcher permission to throw the ball.

    yay! homer!

  3. Ivan says:

Jets with a good win. My Eagles just destroyed the Rams.

  4. Joey says:

Bye bye Mr. Young’s no hitter… damn Gabe Kapler

  5. Mike A. says:

Chris Young just lost a perfect game with four outs to go.

  6. Ivan says:

Yo DeSean Jackson look very impressive in today’s game. He made some very impressive catches.

  7. Jamal G. says:

I hate that fucking Cowboys’ O-Line.

Wow Today’s a big sports day.

Football, Mussina going for his 18th win, Phi/NYM game, Hughes pitching and etc. Great day if ya sports fanatic.

  9. Ivan says:

This is a bad Match up for the Browns. Explosive offense of the Boys and cleveland has no D (especially on the secondary)

  10. Ivan says:

    The X-Man cracking one.

  11. E-ROC says:

    Wow! X-Man!

  12. Jamal G. says:

I hate the Bills, how they score 34-points and Marshawn Lynch only gets one TD?

  13. Ivan says:

Yo I don’t know if Pam Oliver is ugly or cute. Some days she look good and then there is some days she just look iight at best.

  14. Jamal G. says:

I love me some Kellen Winslow. I remember in Madden 2006 how I signed Winslow as a free agent, and used him and Jeremy Shockey in so many different packages in franchise mode.

  15. Jamal G. says:

LoL @ the Panthers not only going for it on fourth down at the One, but passing the ball and failing to score.

  16. Ivan says:

Lions pick up where they left off. Given up 34 Pts to a team with a QB amking his debut and overall not a good offense.

  17. Ivan says:

    Wow Braylon Edwards.

  18. Jamal G. says:

Dallas’ secondary just keeps failing, I’m loving it.

  19. Ivan says:

Frank Gore on the all underrated team.

  20. Mike A. says:

Wow. That’s alotta hits by the Cap’n. Tying Babe Ruth in anything is rarified air.

  21. Ivan says:

    Touchdown Kellen Winslow.

  22. Jamal G. says:

Wow, 150-Offensive Yards given up by the Chargers’ D.

  23. Jamal G. says:

Wow, 39-years-old for Kim Jones, and you know what? http://www.allfordmustangs.com.....e-bush.jpg

  24. Rich M. says:

Hughes start being shown for free on milb.tv

  25. Manimal says:

whoever has marion barber is having a good week.

  26. E-ROC says:

You don’t ever throw Beltre a fastball.

  27. Mike A. says:

Come on Moose, you know better than to lay a 2-0 fb in there to Beltre.

  28. Jamal G. says:

    Nice job, Cleveland, nice job.

    • Ivan says:

Romo has so much time to throw, he could drink water, talk to Jessica simpson on the phone and do a couple push ups and still have time throw the ball.

  29. Ivan says:

Nasty Curve by Hughes right there.

  30. Jamal G. says:

Check out Durahm’s game, Wade Davis is starting.

  31. Mike Pop says:

    Cowboys baby !!

  32. Ivan says:

Good start from Phil Hughes. couple of K’s and a groundout.

  33. Mike Pop says:

Cboys secondary is only doing so bad cuz no Tnew

  34. Ivan says:

    Jim Brown=Babe Ruth of RB’s.

  35. Manimal says:

Damn it im losing now in fantasy football. Come on LT, earn ya points.

  36. Mike Pop says:

    Cano cmon baby

  37. Manimal says:

man miranda crushed that, unfortunately it landed in a glove.

  38. Jamal G. says:

If you are not a fan of the Cowboys, the pressure on Tony Romo is nausea inducing.

  39. Manimal says:

    Man Hughes is dominating today.

  40. Manimal says:

ahahahah shelly tried to sell the trap dive but didn’t really work.

  41. Ivan says:

It’s about time the Browns put some pressure on Romo.

  42. Manimal says:

Why is hughes warming up from the stretch?

  43. Mike A. says:

What the hell was that? Erg.

  44. Manimal says:

5K’s in 2.2 innings, he just hit 93 mph.

  45. Jamal G. says:

Eh, I’d rather Marion Barber get the TD. I’m up against somebody with both Tony Romo and T.O. on their squad.

  46. I swear, dude. ARod is has to be doing this shit intentionally. He’s literally trying his ass off to get all Yankee fans to hate him with a passion. He has come up with so many new and more creative ways to fail, disappear, come up small, or make bonehead plays. I think he’s addicted to bad press on the back cover.

    UGH.

  47. Jon G says:

What the hell was that by Jeter? Was that yet another a Meacham screw up??

    At least Hughes looks good!

  48. Mike A. says:

Hughes is struggling a little out of the stretch. Not surprising, he didn’t spend very much time pitching out of the stretch the first 2 years of his career.

  49. Ivan says:

    3IP, 5K’s and no BB’s.

Seem like his FB has alot of life today.

  50. Manimal says:

Was that pedroia? that pawtuckett second basemen is pure grit.

  51. Manimal says:

    Nice cutter by hughes. 6k’s.

  52. Ivan says:

    Today’s is Wade Davis B-Day.

  53. cult of basebaal says:

    #7

  54. Manimal says:

    Shit! 7k’s 4 innings

  55. Ivan says:

    Nasty Curve by Hughes.

    4IP, 7K’s and 0BB’s.

  56. cult of basebaal says:

    #8

  57. Ivan says:

    9K’s for Hughes thru 5.

  58. yankeemonkey says:

    #9

  59. Ivan says:

14.1IP in both minor and major League playoffs, Hughes has 27K’s.

  60. cult of basebaal says:

win or lose, this ought to be the last start Phil Hughes makes in the minors this year … ponson needs to sleep with the fishes

  61. yankeemonkey says:

Wow, Karstens got lit up by the moribund Giants offense today: 8R (5ER) in only 3 innings. Ouch.

  62. Ivan says:

    dissapointed, no K’s from Hughes.

  63. Ivan says:

Hey Mike you think with this performance from hughes so far the yanks would call him or just leave him here for the rest of the season?

    • Mike A. says:

They’ll probably just leave him down there. If SWB wins the series, he’d make another start for them, then the AzFL starts up at the end of the month.

  64. Ivan says:

I really hope Melancon pitching today as well.

  65. yankeemonkey says:

You know you’re a terrible team when you lose a series to the motherflipping Mariners.

  66. Mike A. says:

    Fourth place, here we come.

  67. Ivan says:

7 shutout innings from Hughes. Now he’s getting some grounders as well.

  68. Ivan says:

Hughes pitches one more inning? He’s at 86 pitches.

  69. Ivan says:

    #10 for Hughes.

  70. Mike A. says:

Phil Hughes = good at pitching. Holy Schnikees.

  71. Ivan says:

Think about this, against the Boston AA and AAA teams in the playoffs,

    14IP, 23K’s, 1run and 0BB’s.

Can’t wait when he faces Boston atthe MLB level in the playoffs.

  72. Jamal G. says:

He’s gone over 100-pitches in a Triple-A start recently, so do they go batter-by-batter? He’s at 94 right now.

  73. BigBlueAL says:

I know nobody watched the Yankees game today from the comments Ive read. But unfortunately I did and I must say, another utterly fuckin embarrassing performance. Its gonna be a sad final 10 games in the Stadium, utterly pathetic that this team plays in the final games at Yankee Stadium cause they are not nowhere near worthy enough to wear the pinstripes.

Actually Im sorry, that rant was supposed to be directed at my Fantasy Football team which is currently getting dominated…..

    • Jamal G. says:

Nah, I think most of us watched it, just that there’s nothing really left to say about this team.

      • BigBlueAL says:

I was just venting cause my team suckin dick today. I mean Adrian peterson tomorrow could equal his 279 yard game or whatever it was from last season and I still will get my ass whooped…..

        • Well, I guess I could complain about Issac Bruce giving me an o-fer in the RAB league, but I’m still up on Rafi by 13 going into the last three games… I’ve got Chicago (vs. banged up Indy) left and he’s got Greg Jennings (vs. the Vikings D) and Justin Fargas (vs. the Denver D), so, hopefully I should wrap this one up okay.

In my other league, though… losing by 19, and FOUR of his guys haven’t played their game yet (Peyton, Donald Driver, Greg Jennings, AND Darren McFadden). All I’ve got left is Addai; he’s going to have to drop 300 and 4TD’s for me to have a shot. The thing that pisses me off most of all is I had McGahee in the lineup since all the press said he’d play and he was on the active roster, but the Ravens didn’t give him a single snap.

          Harbaugh is a douche.

      • I didn’t watch it. I spent the past 4 hours at jetersfordchallenge.com.

      • yankeemonkey says:

Yeah, the game was a disgrace, what else is there to say?

        Phil Hughes = sick.

Mike, I know you think they’ll keep Hughes down in AAA for the rest of the playoffs. What if Scranton gets bounced? Will they just tell him to chill until AzFL starts up? Or bring him up?

    • Ivan says:

This is a football/Hughes day. Yankees have not earn the right to be watch.

      • BigBlueAL says:

Just that Im not used to not watching a Yankees game in September and not caring about it cause they suck. Its usually cause they are comfortably in the playoffs and losing wouldnt hurt them. I feel like im a little kid again who would watch just to see Mattingly hit and hoping Righetti got into the game and pitched. Except that I dont even enjoy watching these players anymore, and the only thing I was rooting for today was for Moose to win and that ended after 6 1/2 innings….

        • Ivan says:

To be fair, even a subpar yankee team is gonna win 85-86 Games. I mean when almost everything that went wrong goes wrong, winning 86 games isn’t so bad, but yet nevertheless it is very dissapointed.

          • yankeemonkey says:

Just pisses me off that all the pompous asses (Steve Phillips, Steve Lombardi, etc etc) will be dancing around screaming “I told you so!!!”

I’m sure some dumbass will find a way to tie it to Yankees converting Joba to a starter.

          • BigBlueAL says:

Hey the Yankees from 1986-1988 (when I was old enough to follow the team in terms of record and stuff) won 90, 89 and 85 games. Plus from 1983-1985 they won 91, 87, and 97 games so dont think those teams were so horrible. Ive seen this current team before alot. It was called the mid-to-late 80′s Yankees.

Difference is this team should be back in the playoffs hopefully next year and for years to come once again….

  74. Ivan says:

    No Melancon damn.

  75. Alex says:

Didn’t even watch the Yankees in Seattle, MILB.TV’d Phil instead. Absolutely the right move, but I won’t spoil DOTF.

The Yanks need to lose enough games to get into 15th overall in the ML standings. I want CC, two first round picks and a host of supplemental picks. Then I want to trade Anything necessary to get Madison Baumgartner from San Francisco (I’ll elaborate on the trade idea when we start an Offseason thread)

  76. Ivan says:

    Hughes had a 75-19 K/bb ratio. Damn.

  77. Mike A. says:

Wow, in his postgame press conference, Belichek said “hopefully Cassell can do the job for us the rest of the year.”

    Yikes.

    • BigBlueAL says:

Im sure Brady will be listed as Probable for Week 2…..

    • Ivan says:

If you are saying Yikes and you hate the Pats, imagine what the Pat fans are saying.

    • Jamal G. says:

Knowing him, the “job” he’s referring to is being a solid #2 QB.

    • You know, normally I never ever take any glee in any opposing team’s players going out with an injury, because I think it’s cruel and bad karma; I’d rather beat people with their best instead of getting cheap wins against depleted lineups.

But, as a Jet (and Yankee) fan who’s watched my teams beset by crippling injury after crippling injury over the past decade or so, I gotta say that I don’t have much sympathy for Pats fans now. I hope he is out for the year; now they can know what my Pennington and Testaverde (and Curtis Martin and John Abraham) and Jon Vilma suffering has felt like.

  78. BigBlueAL says:

BTW, anyone wanna see a couple of nasty knockouts you might still find a clip on YouTube of Lidell getting knocked the fuck out last night. Plus for any boxing fans ESPN.com 2007 Prospect of the Year Amir Kahn lost his 1st bout via a KO in the 1st round last night with plenty of clips available on YouTube of that fight.

  79. Ivan says:

    Wow Touchdown Panthers.

  80. Jamal G. says:

Wow, a walk-off TD pass by Jake Delhomme and the Carolina Panthers.

  81. BigBlueAL says:

WOW!!! What a finish for the Panthers in San Diego!!!!!!

  82. Mike A. says:

    Will SWB ever score?

  83. Ivan says:

Just watching Hughes tonight, he had excellent command of FB with good velocity. His Curveball was just NASTY especially with two strikes on the hitter. Overall he was fantastic.

  84. Ivan says:

Miranda looks unconfortable against a lefty.

  85. Mike A. says:

    Holy shit Shelley!

  86. yankeemonkey says:

    SHELLEY!!!

  87. Ivan says:

Wow Walk-off Homer by shelly Duncan.

    Talk about a treat.

Just a great game to watch.

  88. D.B. says:

    hughes is clutch

  89. Yankees=warriors says:

What a “legit” way to win it!

  90. stuart says:

Cano looked real good today. Really a proffessional AB in the 4th or so with 2 men on and 1 out!!

Cano looks like Arod up there.. Arod is a clown, where are the Arod groupies today????

Arod is a loser and that is the fact until he proves otherwise, just think 9 more years of his sizzle and no substance…

Cano and arod are tied for biggest dissappointment this year…

  91. stuart says:

yeah Hughes is real clutch, he has added so much to the big club this year…..

    what are you guys smoking???????

    • Yankees=warriors says:

      Go away.

    • BigBlueAL says:

Well I agree with you in the sense of too many people here get excited about AA/AAA performances which IPK/Shelley Duncan/Gardner/Rasner etc should have proven by now are pretty meaningless. BUT it is fun to see/read about Hughes pitching that dominant in a AAA playoff game vs the Sox of all teams, especially since Hughes is still young and actually can look dominant and has done so at the Major League level so it is encouraging.

      • mustang says:

Good point especially “too many people here get excited about AA/AAA performances which IPK/Shelley Duncan/Gardner” and now everyone seems to be jumping on the free agent bandwagon.

  92. Yankees=warriors says:

Too bad I missed most part of the game.
If I had known it was free, I totally would have chosen this over the time-wasting Yankee game…

  93. Jamal G. says:

It seems Billy Wagner is inching closer and closer towards that TJS: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/articl.....8;c_id=mlb

  94. Jamal G. says:

Damn, Joe is getting his ass kicked in the RAB league.

  95. mustang says:

And mean while in Philadelphia a meaningful game with you knows whom pitching.
    THIS SUCKS.

    • Ben K. says:

Apologies for my now-deleted comments earlier. You caught me at a bad point on a bad night. I see your point about Santana and tonight’s game, and it’s one we’ll discuss as we break down the season. It certainly is fitting that Johan went on the night the Yanks fell to fourth.

      • mustang says:

Ben, I’m going to get a little personal August was a hard month for me I was either visiting a hospital or making funeral arrangements. Bull shitting here was a way for me to escape so I have nothing, but respect for the work you guys do here.
I’m sorry for whatever is going on with you the whole thing is forgotten.
