Game 143: Moose searching for number 18
ByMike Mussina has won 18 games five times, but he hasn’t accomplished this feat since 2002. Today, in Seattle, he’s gunning for his 18th victory of the year. If he nails the W today, he’ll have 20 in his sights. If not, he’ll have to win three of his last four starts.
Originally scheduled to face him was Carlos Silva, and it’s too bad that Silva’s back is acting up. Against the Yankees, Silva has been nothing short of terrible in his career. But alas, the Yanks will instead face Ryan Feierabend, a 23-year-old with some unimpressive Major League numbers.
Damon CF
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
Rodriguez 3B
Giambi 1B
Nady LF
Matsui DH
Cano 2B
Molina C
Mussina P (17-7, 3.39 ERA)

get loose, Moose!
and let’s pray the yankees’ bats are not stymied by yet another URP.
i know this is completely random, but why does jeter nod his head as soon as he’s ready to step into the box? its like he’s giving the pitcher permission to throw the ball.
yay! homer!
Way to go Jetes.
Hey were you nervous at the end?
A little.
A little? I nearly had a heart attack.
Darrelle Revis is a man.
I was a little nervous, until I remembered that the Fins’ QB is Chad “Mr. 4th Quarter INT” Pennington.
Jets with a good win. My Eagles just destroyed the Rams.
Jets game was much closer than it should have been, damn Pennington kept them in it
Why can’t the Jets get a QB like that?
Cure of Broadway Joe?
**curse
Jets game was much closer than it should have been, damn
Penningtonself-inflicted penalties and conservative offensive playcalling kept them in itFixed.
Speaking of self-inflicted penalties, tough first day for #1 pick Jake Long.
Yeah, what was with that run on 3rd and 7 in the last drive? Oh well, a win is a win.
I’m a sports whore, I had like five NFL games on my laptop with the PHI/NYM game on the tube.
Michael Turner FTW!!!
Bye bye Mr. Young’s no hitter… damn Gabe Kapler
Chris Young just lost a perfect game with four outs to go.
Yo DeSean Jackson look very impressive in today’s game. He made some very impressive catches.
I hate that fucking Cowboys’ O-Line.
I just hate the Cowboys in general…
Sitting Pennington in favor of Vince Young = FAIL.
http://failblog.files.wordpres......jpg?w=500
Oh well.
Wow Today’s a big sports day.
Football, Mussina going for his 18th win, Phi/NYM game, Hughes pitching and etc. Great day if ya sports fanatic.
evn with the Tennis with US open women’s final and Nadal playing.
Monday will be an even bigger day for fans in New England and Tennessee.
Wow So much for Brady being alright for the season.
This is a bad Match up for the Browns. Explosive offense of the Boys and cleveland has no D (especially on the secondary)
People were getting on their knees for the Browns a bit too much.
The X-Man cracking one.
Wow! X-Man!
I hate the Bills, how they score 34-points and Marshawn Lynch only gets one TD?
Yo I don’t know if Pam Oliver is ugly or cute. Some days she look good and then there is some days she just look iight at best.
She used to be solid top three status, but she’s getting old and letting shit go.
She’s better than Erin Andrews, though.
I love me some Kellen Winslow. I remember in Madden 2006 how I signed Winslow as a free agent, and used him and Jeremy Shockey in so many different packages in franchise mode.
Who ya take, Winslow or Davis?
Winslow, better athlete and more big-play ability.
LoL @ the Panthers not only going for it on fourth down at the One, but passing the ball and failing to score.
Lions pick up where they left off. Given up 34 Pts to a team with a QB amking his debut and overall not a good offense.
Go Chargers’ D.
The Lions will suck until Barry Sanders comes out of retirement and starts playing linebacker.
Wow Braylon Edwards.
Dallas’ secondary just keeps failing, I’m loving it.
Frank Gore on the all underrated team.
Try all “screw my fantasy team over last year” team. He blew and thats being nice
It’s hard to perform well when ya QB isn’t doing the job. Despite that he still puts up #’s.
Wow. That’s alotta hits by the Cap’n. Tying Babe Ruth in anything is rarified air.
Congrads my Cap’n
Oh captain, my captain.
Touchdown Kellen Winslow.
Wow, 150-Offensive Yards given up by the Chargers’ D.
…In the 1st Quarter.
But, more importantly, they held them scoreless.
I wish they would pass to Hackett more haha
Wow, 39-years-old for Kim Jones, and you know what? http://www.allfordmustangs.com.....e-bush.jpg
Reischea Candidate (formerly of Fox 5 Sports) makes watching ESPN news worthwhile.
Why can’t YES hire her?
http://theblackquarterback.fil.....nidate.jpg
I think she’s ugly.
Well, to each his own, I suppose.

Hughes start being shown for free on milb.tv
whoever has marion barber is having a good week.
You don’t ever throw Beltre a fastball.
Come on Moose, you know better than to lay a 2-0 fb in there to Beltre.
Nice job, Cleveland, nice job.
Romo has so much time to throw, he could drink water, talk to Jessica simpson on the phone and do a couple push ups and still have time throw the ball.
Nasty Curve by Hughes right there.
Check out Durahm’s game, Wade Davis is starting.
Cowboys baby !!
Good start from Phil Hughes. couple of K’s and a groundout.
Cboys secondary is only doing so bad cuz no Tnew
Jim Brown=Babe Ruth of RB’s.
Damn it im losing now in fantasy football. Come on LT, earn ya points.
I was winning comfortably earlier today (up about 25 pts), but it’s getting a little too close for me (up by about 8 pts now). The scary part is that my opponent still has AP set to go tomorrow night (I still have Ryan Grant left to go tomorrow, but he’s hurting).
I was just up by 7 now Im down by 7
Oh, and NHL 09 is sick. I’m not sure what to go with this winter, that or Madden.
Ha I’m gonna play both.
I’m waiting for the EA Sports Double Stuf Racing League game to come out… that’s gonna be SICK!
Oh, it’s on like Donkey Kong.
The Mannings will go into the Television Hall of Fame for breaking the record for the most horrible commercial spots ever.
Oh, and Serena Williams officially now looks like Sasquatch.
Nah im sorry but Serena has looked MUCH Better for the last year or two.
Cano cmon baby
man miranda crushed that, unfortunately it landed in a glove.
If you are not a fan of the Cowboys, the pressure on Tony Romo is nausea inducing.
Man Hughes is dominating today.
That he is.
ahahahah shelly tried to sell the trap dive but didn’t really work.
It’s about time the Browns put some pressure on Romo.
Why is hughes warming up from the stretch?
What the hell was that? Erg.
5K’s in 2.2 innings, he just hit 93 mph.
Eh, I’d rather Marion Barber get the TD. I’m up against somebody with both Tony Romo and T.O. on their squad.
I swear, dude. ARod is has to be doing this shit intentionally. He’s literally trying his ass off to get all Yankee fans to hate him with a passion. He has come up with so many new and more creative ways to fail, disappear, come up small, or make bonehead plays. I think he’s addicted to bad press on the back cover.
UGH.
Every Yankee fan except Jamal.
Wasn’t it Jeter who got caught?? I’m following along on gameday, so I didn’t see the play, but how’s that Arod’s fault
What the hell was that by Jeter? Was that yet another a Meacham screw up??
At least Hughes looks good!
Jeter was only running to try and bail out ARod; he can’t stay on 2nd… Can’t blame that on anyone other than Mr. Unlucky 13.
Hughes is struggling a little out of the stretch. Not surprising, he didn’t spend very much time pitching out of the stretch the first 2 years of his career.
Didn’t he threw a perfect game in HS?
3IP, 5K’s and no BB’s.
Seem like his FB has alot of life today.
93 mph.
Was that pedroia? that pawtuckett second basemen is pure grit.
Nice cutter by hughes. 6k’s.
Today’s is Wade Davis B-Day.
#7
Shit! 7k’s 4 innings
Nasty Curve by Hughes.
4IP, 7K’s and 0BB’s.
A little run support would be nice.
Pitch count is getting up there, but that’ll happen when you’re K-ing everyone…
9 K thru 5
#8
9K’s for Hughes thru 5.
#9
14.1IP in both minor and major League playoffs, Hughes has 27K’s.
win or lose, this ought to be the last start Phil Hughes makes in the minors this year … ponson needs to sleep with the fishes
Wow, Karstens got lit up by the moribund Giants offense today: 8R (5ER) in only 3 innings. Ouch.
I can’t believe they traded him away. Brian Cashman is so teh stupid!!1111
Tell me about it.
dissapointed, no K’s from Hughes.
Bust. They’d be lucky if they can trade him for Miguel Batista or Carlos Silva now.
Hey Mike you think with this performance from hughes so far the yanks would call him or just leave him here for the rest of the season?
They’ll probably just leave him down there. If SWB wins the series, he’d make another start for them, then the AzFL starts up at the end of the month.
I really hope Melancon pitching today as well.
You know you’re a terrible team when you lose a series to the motherflipping Mariners.
Fourth place, here we come.
well they are tied with the Jays.
Yep, and once they lose they’ll be 0.5 GB of the Jays for third.
7 shutout innings from Hughes. Now he’s getting some grounders as well.
Yeah, too bad his offense has been getting hitting tips from the big league club.
Hughes pitches one more inning? He’s at 86 pitches.
#10 for Hughes.
Make it 11.
Phil Hughes = good at pitching. Holy Schnikees.
They should just reserve Hughes for the playoffs. A new kind of pitching specialist.
Think about this, against the Boston AA and AAA teams in the playoffs,
14IP, 23K’s, 1run and 0BB’s.
Can’t wait when he faces Boston atthe MLB level in the playoffs.
He’s gone over 100-pitches in a Triple-A start recently, so do they go batter-by-batter? He’s at 94 right now.
I know nobody watched the Yankees game today from the comments Ive read. But unfortunately I did and I must say, another utterly fuckin embarrassing performance. Its gonna be a sad final 10 games in the Stadium, utterly pathetic that this team plays in the final games at Yankee Stadium cause they are not nowhere near worthy enough to wear the pinstripes.
Actually Im sorry, that rant was supposed to be directed at my Fantasy Football team which is currently getting dominated…..
Nah, I think most of us watched it, just that there’s nothing really left to say about this team.
I was just venting cause my team suckin dick today. I mean Adrian peterson tomorrow could equal his 279 yard game or whatever it was from last season and I still will get my ass whooped…..
Well, I guess I could complain about Issac Bruce giving me an o-fer in the RAB league, but I’m still up on Rafi by 13 going into the last three games… I’ve got Chicago (vs. banged up Indy) left and he’s got Greg Jennings (vs. the Vikings D) and Justin Fargas (vs. the Denver D), so, hopefully I should wrap this one up okay.
In my other league, though… losing by 19, and FOUR of his guys haven’t played their game yet (Peyton, Donald Driver, Greg Jennings, AND Darren McFadden). All I’ve got left is Addai; he’s going to have to drop 300 and 4TD’s for me to have a shot. The thing that pisses me off most of all is I had McGahee in the lineup since all the press said he’d play and he was on the active roster, but the Ravens didn’t give him a single snap.
Harbaugh is a douche.
I didn’t watch it. I spent the past 4 hours at jetersfordchallenge.com.
Yeah, the game was a disgrace, what else is there to say?
Phil Hughes = sick.
Mike, I know you think they’ll keep Hughes down in AAA for the rest of the playoffs. What if Scranton gets bounced? Will they just tell him to chill until AzFL starts up? Or bring him up?
No idea.
This is a football/Hughes day. Yankees have not earn the right to be watch.
Just that Im not used to not watching a Yankees game in September and not caring about it cause they suck. Its usually cause they are comfortably in the playoffs and losing wouldnt hurt them. I feel like im a little kid again who would watch just to see Mattingly hit and hoping Righetti got into the game and pitched. Except that I dont even enjoy watching these players anymore, and the only thing I was rooting for today was for Moose to win and that ended after 6 1/2 innings….
To be fair, even a subpar yankee team is gonna win 85-86 Games. I mean when almost everything that went wrong goes wrong, winning 86 games isn’t so bad, but yet nevertheless it is very dissapointed.
Just pisses me off that all the pompous asses (Steve Phillips, Steve Lombardi, etc etc) will be dancing around screaming “I told you so!!!”
I’m sure some dumbass will find a way to tie it to Yankees converting Joba to a starter.
Larry Brooks already did that. His whole point was “they changed him from an A-plus reliever to a B-minus starter.”
The NHL writer for the Post????
Fabulous. Also, Larry Brooks is an idiot of unparalleled proportions. Didn’t he used to cover the Devils a few years ago? I thought he was a moron back then too…some things never change.
Steve Philips is a moron.
Steve Lombardi has become more and more unreadable the last couple years.
Hey the Yankees from 1986-1988 (when I was old enough to follow the team in terms of record and stuff) won 90, 89 and 85 games. Plus from 1983-1985 they won 91, 87, and 97 games so dont think those teams were so horrible. Ive seen this current team before alot. It was called the mid-to-late 80′s Yankees.
Difference is this team should be back in the playoffs hopefully next year and for years to come once again….
No Melancon damn.
Didn’t even watch the Yankees in Seattle, MILB.TV’d Phil instead. Absolutely the right move, but I won’t spoil DOTF.
The Yanks need to lose enough games to get into 15th overall in the ML standings. I want CC, two first round picks and a host of supplemental picks. Then I want to trade Anything necessary to get Madison Baumgartner from San Francisco (I’ll elaborate on the trade idea when we start an Offseason thread)
Madison Bumgarner? You’re not getting him without doing something needless and stupid.
Why would you “trade Anything necessary to get” a pitcher in Low-A?
Especially a pitcher with no secondary pitches.
Not a single aspect of pitching is more important than fastball command, easy to fall in love with a 6’5″ lefty who has plenty of it.
No secondary pitches and, until recently, no runs in over a month. Let Nardi & co. figure out his offspeed stuff. Low A or not, these are insane numbers for a guy who only recently turned 19.
http://www.thebaseballcube.com.....rner.shtml
OK, this discussion doesn’t belong here, and yea, “Anything necessary” is crazy talk. Sorry.
Hughes had a 75-19 K/bb ratio. Damn.
Wow, in his postgame press conference, Belichek said “hopefully Cassell can do the job for us the rest of the year.”
Yikes.
Im sure Brady will be listed as Probable for Week 2…..
If you are saying Yikes and you hate the Pats, imagine what the Pat fans are saying.
Knowing him, the “job” he’s referring to is being a solid #2 QB.
You know, normally I never ever take any glee in any opposing team’s players going out with an injury, because I think it’s cruel and bad karma; I’d rather beat people with their best instead of getting cheap wins against depleted lineups.
But, as a Jet (and Yankee) fan who’s watched my teams beset by crippling injury after crippling injury over the past decade or so, I gotta say that I don’t have much sympathy for Pats fans now. I hope he is out for the year; now they can know what my Pennington and Testaverde (and Curtis Martin and John Abraham) and Jon Vilma suffering has felt like.
BTW, anyone wanna see a couple of nasty knockouts you might still find a clip on YouTube of Lidell getting knocked the fuck out last night. Plus for any boxing fans ESPN.com 2007 Prospect of the Year Amir Kahn lost his 1st bout via a KO in the 1st round last night with plenty of clips available on YouTube of that fight.
http://assets.espn.go.com/phot.....dy_400.jpg
Ouch babe.
Boston wont care much until the Red Sox’ season is done.
Yikes.
LoL @ someone saying “Glen Dorsey FTW!” to caption that picture.
Holy shit, I didn’t realize for a second knees aren’t supposed to bend that way. Gah!
PeteAbe must be inconsolable. Peter King too.
Wow Touchdown Panthers.
Wow, a walk-off TD pass by Jake Delhomme and the Carolina Panthers.
WOW!!! What a finish for the Panthers in San Diego!!!!!!
Will SWB ever score?
Thats what happens when you take away Melky from their offense….
They can’t win without their sparkplug…Melky Cabrera!!!
LoL, you two are assholes.
That was…uncanny
Thanks!!!!
Lead off double with an error to send him to third for Bernie Castro. Miranda set up for the walk-off.
If this is anything like this year’s major league Yankee game, it’ll go like this:
Guy on 3rd w/no outs
K
Walk
Double play.
Just watching Hughes tonight, he had excellent command of FB with good velocity. His Curveball was just NASTY especially with two strikes on the hitter. Overall he was fantastic.
Miranda looks unconfortable against a lefty.
Holy shit Shelley!
SHELLEY!!!
Wow Walk-off Homer by shelly Duncan.
Talk about a treat.
Just a great game to watch.
hughes is clutch
He Likes the big Game.
What a “legit” way to win it!
Cano looked real good today. Really a proffessional AB in the 4th or so with 2 men on and 1 out!!
Cano looks like Arod up there.. Arod is a clown, where are the Arod groupies today????
Arod is a loser and that is the fact until he proves otherwise, just think 9 more years of his sizzle and no substance…
Cano and arod are tied for biggest dissappointment this year…
Can a comment on RAB qualify for “the dumbest LoHud comment of the day”?
Can you climb back into your hole?
The time Stuart’s dad didn’t pull out in time was his biggest disappointment of that year.
Oh suh-nap.
“You know back in my day they didn’t have advanced birth control methods, like pullin’ out.”
Great flick.
yeah Hughes is real clutch, he has added so much to the big club this year…..
what are you guys smoking???????
Go away.
Well I agree with you in the sense of too many people here get excited about AA/AAA performances which IPK/Shelley Duncan/Gardner/Rasner etc should have proven by now are pretty meaningless. BUT it is fun to see/read about Hughes pitching that dominant in a AAA playoff game vs the Sox of all teams, especially since Hughes is still young and actually can look dominant and has done so at the Major League level so it is encouraging.
Good point especially “too many people here get excited about AA/AAA performances which IPK/Shelley Duncan/Gardner” and now everyone seems to be jumping on the free agent bandwagon.
Too bad I missed most part of the game.
If I had known it was free, I totally would have chosen this over the time-wasting Yankee game…
It seems Billy Wagner is inching closer and closer towards that TJS: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/articl.....8;c_id=mlb
I’m surprised he avoided it this long, he’s quite the chicken winger.
I’ve seen some people put a lot of stock into that, and some don’t, is there a middle ground or is it just something that some believe in and some don’t?
Damn, Joe is getting his ass kicked in the RAB league.
So am I. I was up by 25 pts before, what the hell happened?
In Mike Ashomre’s league, I have a 9.44-point lead with Greg Jennings and Bernard Berrian set to go manana. He has Devin Hester and Dallas Clark set to go tonight.
I have Ryan Grant set to go tomorrow, but my opponent has AP and some receiver (I forget who) going tomorrow, so I’m screwed.
Chris Johnson is a fucking beast, that’s the one guy I really regret not reaching for.
I wonder if I’m going to regret reaching for Mendenhall. What was it, 6 carries today? Parker got all the short yardage carries too, I thought that was Mendenhall’s M.O.
I think I’m going to regret taking Jay Cutler as my starting QB when I could of have Jon Kitna a couple rounds later. Not much drop-off in their production, I expect.
Mendenhall is probably a non-start until he has a good game first.
Don’t keep getting burned.
And I didn’t even start him… I bet on Amani Toomer getting some love from a weak Redskins D.
If I’d lost with CJ’s 20.20 on the bench, that woulda sucked…
And mean while in Philadelphia a meaningful game with you knows whom pitching.
THIS SUCKS.
Apologies for my now-deleted comments earlier. You caught me at a bad point on a bad night. I see your point about Santana and tonight’s game, and it’s one we’ll discuss as we break down the season. It certainly is fitting that Johan went on the night the Yanks fell to fourth.
Ben, I’m going to get a little personal August was a hard month for me I was either visiting a hospital or making funeral arrangements. Bull shitting here was a way for me to escape so I have nothing, but respect for the work you guys do here.
I’m sorry for whatever is going on with you the whole thing is forgotten.
