Newark Bears fold

Hughes not sharp in Rising Stars effort
Willie's options

This isn’t exactly Yankees’ related, but it’s local and I’m sure people are interested. The Newark Bears of the independent Atlantic League have ceased operations and no longer exist, effective yesterday. Former Yankee Rick Cerone founded the team in 1998, and the Bears have had some notable alumni over the years including Rickey Henderson, Jose Lima and Jose Canseco. I don’t know the circumstances of the team’s folding, but I’m sure the recent economic crisis played a part. (h/t Robert Pimpsner)

Oh wow. That’s kind of horrible =(

That’s terrible. I went to a couple of their games and it was always interesting to see who was playing for them.

Bridgeport has allowed Ms.McGregor and her partner, whose name escapes me at the moment, to divest themselves of their interest in the Bluefish. They intend to install a team in Yonkers, when and if the always cranky city council there approves a massive downtown redevelopment, featuring a minor league ballpark atop an 11 story building, flanked by rwo 50 story buildings. How the failure of the Newark Bears affects all this is anyones guess.

What would you expect? They put this baseball stadium in the dump of Newark NJ! The Sommerset Patriots and the Cardinals do good, people show up to those games (and spend $$). There is no money in beautiful Newark!
