Waikiki loses in a walk-off

By

HWB Waikiki (7-6 loss to North Shore, walk-off style)
Damon Sublett: 1 for 5, 1 R, 3 K
Jeremy Bleich: 3.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 1 K, 7-1 GB/FB – 39 of 69 pitches were strikes (56.5%) … threw first pitch strikes to 12 of the 19 batters he faced … all three runs scored on RBI groundouts

Remember how I’ve been saying the Arizona Fall League starts on Monday? I’m wrong, turns out it starts Tuesday. My bad. Phil Hughes is one of the league’s top plot lines this year.

Now that Andrew Brackman had the rebound start, Bleich is the one that has to carry the ‘ ‘ Bust ‘ ‘ banner, right?

  2. Steve says:

Brrrrr . . . just got a chill up my spine.

Honey, is there an overdraft in here? Check the windows.

  3. Bill says:

    Would you do this trade:
    NYY get Peavy
SD gets 2B Cano, SP Hughes, CF Jackson, SP Belatances.

Then trade Veras for a 2B, and hope Gardner can play CF.
    Imagine a rotation of:
    C.C.
    Wang
    Peavy
    Pettite
    Joba

    That would be crazy.

  4. Brian says:

hughes’ “finishing touches on his reputation restoration”? um, ok. i suppose, but really?

  5. Mike Pop says:

Id rather deal for Felix than Peavy and sign Felix long term for a cheaper amount.. Trade for Felix and sign CC we have the best rotation in baseball cuz its all number 1′s// could we get Felix without Hughes tho
    Felix
    CC
    Wang
    Joba
    Hughes/Mussina

    only in dreams

Am I alone in not hating the Jeremy Bleich pick? They thought they were going to blow a lot of their budget on their 1st pick, Gerrit Cole. Then they went over slot on a bunch of later picks. Given this context, I have no problem with the team signing a lower risk/ lower reward guy.

Let’s say his ceiling is as a 4th starter and he has a decent likelihood of reaching that ceiling. Having a bunch of those guys in your system makes it possible to make trades (Nady/Marte) and avoid signing middling vet pitchers to big money (Pavano/Wright). For chrissakes, Kyle Lohse just signed a $40 million contract. Fourth starters are mighty expensive.

I understand what you’re saying and it does make some sense, but I disagree. The yanks should draft based on upside. They can afford to pay a 4th starter $40 million, but you can’t just sign stars in their peak, so the yanks should draft people who have the potential to be stars.

  7. Bill says:

Peavy at 15 mil is a bargain. The bottom line is in order to acquire talent u need to give up talent. Cano actually has a team friendly contract because his team doesn’t have to worry about an unexpected rise in arbitration. Btw he’ll also be cheap next yr at 7 mil. We could always throw in cash if we have to.

Look at the Beckett deal. IS Hanley crazy good? Yes. Do the sox regret trading him? No

  8. Frank Sobotka says:

Bleich is the belle of the ball from this draft class so far, and has been unimpressive. But there’s still plenty of time for the other draft picks to pan out into something more interesting and productive.

And Veras for a 2B? Dumbest thing I’ve ever read.

  9. Marc says:

Anyone know what day Hughes will pitch? I live in Tucson, AZ and could easily make it to the AFL games.
