Open Thread: Yanks interested in Perez?

By

The Yanks are pretty desperate for pitching, it’s no secret, but just how desperate are they? Apparently desperate enough to offer a contract to Perez. Oh, and not Oliver Perez. Odalis Perez.

Urge to kill, rising.

On the surface, it’s one of those “what the hell are they thinking” moves. He was barely average in the NL last year, posting a 101 OPS+ (which is actually better than Oliver’s 100) after starting Opening Day for the Nats. He’s allowed nearly three baserunners for every two innings pitched in his career, and last year was the first time he eclipsed the 140 IP mark in four years. It’s just not something you like to hear.

But chillax people. If the Yanks did make an offer (the original article is in espanol, so something may have been lost in translation), it’s not to front the rotation. They’re not going to pass on CC Sabathia or Ben Sheets or AJ Burnett or Derek Lowe if Perez agrees to a deal. If anything, they’re just exploring all options and casting a wide net. Hey, he’s better than Ponson, right?

Sit back, relax, and enjoy the football game tonight. Don’t worry about Odalis Perez. The Hot Stove is chock full o’ rumors that never come to fruition, and until we see some more definitive reports, don’t concern yourself with this one. If you want something to worry about, worry about how embarrassing it’ll be for tommiesmithjohncarlos if Ryan Grant picks up the 40 measly yards I need to beat him in fantasy this week even though Brandon Jacobs didn’t play yesterday.

Here’s your open thread for the night. Talk Pack-Saints, Haht Stove, stuffing recipes, whatever you like. Just keep it civilized.

  1. E-ROC says:

Odalis Perez will probably re-up with the Nationals. His splits are obvious as he did really well at home and terrible on the road.

I wonder if the Yanks would help facilitate the Peavy trade between Padres and Cubs.

Too bad Reggie Bush isn’t playing tonight on MNF. That sucks. Although, if the Packers lose, there will be hell to pay back in Wisconsin since Favre is having success in New York.

    • Ivan says:

Well I don’t know. It’s not like Aaron Rodgers has been awful. Rodgers has been pretty solid or even every good this season.

      • Yeah, I don’t think any of the Packers problems are related to the QB. I think you put Favre back on that team, they’re probably still 5-5 coming into this game. He’s not going to stop the Cowboys, Buccaneers, Falcons, Titans, or Vikings from scoring 131 points in those five losses.

The Pack are giving up 147.4 ypg on the ground defensively. That’s fifth worst in the league. Kampman and Hawk are probably the only “impact” players in that front seven (with Barnett hurt).

      • E-ROC says:

Yeah, Rodgers has been managing the game well this season, not turning the ball over, etc. But uh, Packers may not make the playoffs while Favre is looking at a first round bye. Apples and oranges, but Favre was run outta town. That taste is still fresh in the minds of Packer fans abroad.

        • A.D. says:

I am a packers fan, and I have no problem with it… Favre dicked the Packers more than they dicked him. Better the Jets do, the better to compensation for Favre come draft time

      • A.D. says:

Exactly Aaron has given them everything they could hope for and more, showing that he can be an elite QB… and having essentially the same QB rating as Favre

Issue for the pack is injuries that have hurt their ability to stop the run defensively… something Rodgers doesn’t have much effect over.

    • DonnieBaseballHallofFame says:

“I wonder if the Yanks would help facilitate the Peavy trade between Padres and Cubs. ”

Can you expand your thoughts on that idea? Would like to hear that.

As far as the Yanks offering Perez a contract. I think it must have been to be Igawa’s roommate or bat boy or something because even as it stands I do not see him as a #5 in the AL East. I am all for casting a wide net and talking to everybody and anybody but Perez I think is best suited as a long man if headed back to the AL.

  2. If you want something to worry about, worry about how embarrassing it’ll be for tommiesmithjohncarlos if Ryan Grant picks up the 40 measly yards I need to beat him in fantasy this week even though Brandon Jacobs didn’t play yesterday.

I’m going to bitchslap Donovan McNabb and Andy Reid for being such bitches.

How far has Chunky Soup Boy fallen? I’m probably going to bench him for Joe Flacco for the rest of the fantasy season, and I don’t even feel hesitant to do or say that. I hope Donovan enjoys going 9-7 for the Bears next year.

  3. steve (different one) says:

    color me skeptical.

  4. Mike A. says:

Blair Betts baby. Fourth line checking centers aren’t supposed to have hands like that.

  5. A.D. says:

Odalis Perez interest makes no sense… Would someone actually prefer to see Perez start over Hughes, IPK & Aceves?

  6. Nate says:

Is there anyone else out there who thinks that this is a ploy to get other teams interested or jack up the price for Perez?

    • Whoops, for got to translate:

In other news, information received from the headquarters of Dominican pitcher Odaliz Perez indicate that the lefty has received various offers (including those from the part of the New York Yankes and the Chicago White Sox), but his goal is to stay with the Washington Nationals.

In other words, yes, there was an offer, but he ain’t goin’ anywhere.

  8. Ivan says:

I was wondering, who’s the NFL MVP this season?

  9. steve (different one) says:

there were also reports out of the Dominican today that the A’s offered Furcal a contract, which were not true, and that that Renteria signed with the Giants, which may or may not be true.

i am not even the least bit concerned that the Yankees offered a contract to Odalis Perez.

  10. Ivan says:

While it would be crazy for an all NY Superbowl, one of them is gettin picked off.

Between the Jets or Jinx, who has a better chance of being picked off in the playoffs?

  11. Nady Nation says:

Lebron recruitment begins tomorrow night, and I’m pretty psyched to be going. First time I’ve actually been excited to go to a Knick game probably since Patrick Ewing’s return with the Sonics.

    • Mike A. says:

What do you think, LeBron and Amare? LeBron and Wade? Other?

I know little about basketball but it seems like having a dominant big man is a major advantage, so in my uneducated opinion I’d go LeBron + Amare.

      • Thomas says:

LeBron and Bosh is the way to go and I believe Walsh’s first choice.

      • Ivan says:

Well, I like the pairing of LeBron and Bosh.

Im not a huge Amare fan.

LeBron and Wade on the same team would be Jordan/Pippen Vol.2

        • Jay CT says:

So wait- LeBron and Wade is Jordan and Pippen Vol. 2, but you would rather not take that?

Personally, I think Wade is not going to age well and would prefer the Bosh, but I just don’t see why you would pass up the Wade/Bron if you think its Jordan Pip 2

      • Nady Nation says:

Lebron is essential, so after that, I could really go either way with Bosh or Amare. I know that some coaches from the US Olympic team said all the upcoming big FAs on the team (Lebron, Wade, Bosh, etc.) are good friends and want to play together in the NBA. The beauty of what Donnie Walsh has done, and will continue to do, is that we’ll probably have enough money for 2 max contracts, and then a non-max contract for a third really good player.

      • Jamal G. says:

I barely know that much more than you, I just follow my Blazers. However, in Mike D’Antonio’s system, wouldn’t LeBron James and Dwayne Wade be the best pairing?

        • Mike A. says:

Wait, basketball teams have systems? I thought the big guy went to the basket, the little guys stayed on the outside, and the medium sized guys go everywhere else.

          • RollingWave says:

that’s generally true but there are different ways to play it, having a big guy like Shaq obviously play differently than having a big guy like Lebron

            • SFT says:

Regarding D’Antoni’s system , Bosh would be best. He likes atheltic big men, which Bosh epitomizes. Also, LBJ takes it to the hoop, freeing outside shooters, which Wade is not.

There are certianly better parts to add to the equation.

        • J-Gao says:

If it’s D’Antoni wouldn’t Amare be preferred if indeed Mike had a say?
I think it would depend on who the Knicks draft in the lottery this year and/or next. If they get a top guard like Derozan, Harden, or even Rubio, they’ll sign either Bosh or Amare (but I don’t think Amare will leave Phoenix). If they get a top big liek Blake Griffin or Mullens, they’ll opt for Wade?

Is Steve Nash a free agent that year, too? I know he says it’s either Phoenix or Toronto for him, but if NYK is able to build a title contender and Mike D’s still there, I wonder if he would sign on. Imagine, Nash, Robinson (Nate), LBJ, Amare, and some center they draft (Thabeet, Mullens. etc.). And they might have David Lee around.

    • Ivan says:

I gonna say this, and as much as I want LeBron here, for some reason I really see him staying in CLE. CLE is not gonna lose LeBron without a fight epecially if the team makes the finals again.

Nevertheless, it’s always great when players like LeBron or Kobe come to the Garden. Last season was so sick when LeBron looked at Spike Lee and said he was gonna drop 50 on em and he did. That was game was just crazy, dude scored 50 points and drop 11 dimes. That and when Kobe did that sick dunk couples years back at the Garden.

    • Alan says:

It’s alright they’ll both be gone at the end of the season and Eagles management can start doing what they should have done after the Super Bowl loss to the Patriots: Rebuild.

  12. Mike A. says:

Dan Girardi has been the best Girardi in New York sports this year.

  13. Steve says:

Has anyone seen a video or transcript of the Hal ‘ultimatum’? I haven’t. I have yet to see anyone, anywhere post the CONTEXT in which this question was asked. Did he volunteer this info? Or was he being badgered by mindlessly similar questions asked six different ways before he came up with this so-called ‘ultimatum’?

    Was it this:
    Reporter-”How ya doin Hal?”
Hal-”Fine, but the CC offer isn’t going to be there forever.”

    Or this:
    Reporter-”How’s the CC negotiations going?”
    Hal-”Nothing new to report”
Reporter-”How long do you think it will take until he signs?”
Hal-”I have no idea, that’s up to him”
Reporter-”Are you worried that he hasn’t signed yet?”
    Hal-”No”
Reporter-”Do you think it means he doesn’t want to be a Yankee?”
Hal-”I have no idea. Again, you’ll have to ask him. But we’d love to have him on our team.”
Reporter-”If he doesn’t decide soon will it affect your off season plans?”
Hal-”No, we have a few other offers out there.”
Reporter-”How long will you wait until you move on?”
Hal-”Well, the offer isn’t going to be there forever. So at some point we’d have to move on. But I don’t anticipate that happening.”

Something tells me it was scenario B. Just a wild guess.

    • whozat says:

“Something tells me it was scenario B”

Might that something be “rational thought”? Something that, apparently, eludes many fans and reporters ;-)

  14. Steve says:

BTW-Mike, loved the Burnett/Sheets piece. And apparently more Yankee fans agree with us than I would have thought, if this poll is any indication.

    http://www.prosportsdaily.com/.....p?t=296175

Now if we could just get the Yankee front office on board.

  15. Steve says:

    Delmon Young anyone?

“It remains unclear whether the Twins will be able to move outfielder Delmon Young, but they are intent on trading for bullpen help. ”

    http://www.twincities.com/sports/ci_11052699

We’re certainly a match talent wise, but I’m not sure about Delmon. The power hasn’t developed the way everyone thought it would, and for the Twins to give up on him so fast, it tells you they’ve seen enough after 1 season. Plus, the last thing we need is another LF.

    http://www.baseball-reference......de03.shtml

    • Mike A. says:

He can play RF no problem. He did all of ’07 with Tampa and his entire MiL career. He’s a special hitter, but the dude has no plate discipline. Like, none. He’ll make Cano look like freaking Giambi. Nice buy opportunity though, so if the price is right…

      • Steve says:

A few relievers doesn’t sound overly expensive. But I think this goes beyond the back of his Baseball card. The Twins wouldn’t give up on a young, cheap guy with his upside unless he was a major attitude problem. Especially after just giving up Garza to get him. He did throw a bat at an umpire once, if I remember correctly.

BTW-I’ve always thought he’s a SO machine as well, but he ‘only’ struck out 105 times last year (575 ABs). Which isn’t horrible. His lack of plate discipline shows up more in his walks (35). But if you’re going top be that type of hitter, you’d like to see more pop. Its the .405 SLG that bugs me the most.

    • Thomas says:

I wouldn’t mind it if the price is right, but New York media will just bomb the guy. I think all the negative media will cause problems, since he is a head case.

    • Jamal G. says:

It may not be a pressing need in the upcoming season, but with Johnny Damon and Xavier Nady playing in their contract years in 2009, it is a pressing need for 2010 and beyond. I would love to acquire Delmon Young for some of our relievers; that’s why you build a bullpen such as Brian Cashman has: multiple, young and cost-controlled.

    • A.D. says:

He’s 22, plenty of time to show power

      • RollingWave says:

there’s also a chance that he turns *only* into Jose Guillen, or in the worest case, Juan Encarnacion. still, I’d trade for a reasonable sum for a guy who’s top age comp is Carl Yastrzemski .

        • Steve says:

His #9 comp is a guy named Buttercup Dickerson.

No, not the one from that new show on LOGO-TV, the one that played Baseball in the late 1800′s.

    • Steve says:

If (Twins GM) Bill Smith trades him for a few relievers, that will be TWO bad trades in the past two seasons.

The Santana deal was a bust, and the Delmon Young deal effectively turn into Matt Garza for a couple of relief pitchers. Unless one of them is your future closer, that’s a disaster as well.

If the Twins do NOTHING last off season, keep Matt Garza and Johan Santana, do you think they would have made the playoffs?

If you take Garza off the Rays, do THEY make the playoffs?

      Sometimes the best moves . . . . .

  16. Steve says:

BTW-If anyone thought that Rentaria is a Giant because you were listening to WFAN this afternoon, well. . . he isn’t.

    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/.....n-edg.html

The one time Sweeney gets a scoop, he blows it.

  17. Baseballnation says:

I don’t know why anyone would take Bosh over Amare, Bosh is a finesse big man who does not get down low and rebound, while Amare is the kind of dominant big man you can build around

    • Steve H says:

Bosh average 10.5 rebounds per game last year, Amare averaged 8.4, with a career high of 9.6. Stoudemire also has played in an up tempo offense his whole career, hence more shots, more rebound opportunities. So I’d say Bosh is more than up to Amare on the boards. And Amare is brutal defensively, just awful.

    • Thomas says:

Bosh has had better rebounding and scoring than Amare in some seasons. I think Bosh is more athletic and hasn’t had a severe injury. Also Amare is helped by playing with Nash in Phoenix’s offense.

Of course Amare is great and pairing him with D’Antoni again certainly isn’t a bad idea.

      • Greg P says:

I think Amare is much more reliant on/product of the talent around him. Bosh is much better at getting his own shot, and has far better range on his jumper.

    • Ivan says:

Amare isn’t really a dominate post player. He get his points by Fast breaks, beating big men off the dribble and using a pretty good jumper.

    • Bosh is a finesse big man who does not get down low and rebound, while Amare is the kind of dominant big man you can build around

That’s funny, I’d have said the exact opposite of that. IMO, Bosh is the dominant big man you can build around, and Amare doesn’t get down low and rebound.

But the difference between the two is not titanic. Bosh gives you more defense and rebounding. Amare gives you more explosive scoring. I’d take Bosh, but I won’t be complaining if we end up with Amare.

However, Bosh is a year and a half younger (and hasn’t already had a serious knee surgery)…

  18. Jamal G. says:

Tony Kornheiser: “I think every time Aaron Rodgers goes out there, he competes against the opposing Quarterback and Brett Favre.”

Ron Jaworski: “I think that’s a ridiculous statement.”

I love and hate Jaws and Tony, respectively.

  19. Ivan says:

Yo the Luda album is pretty damn good.

  20. RollingWave says:

On Delmon Young, I’d trade a moderate sum for him but there are certainly signs that worry people. a lot of people see him as Jose Guillen now, while that has value as well, it’s probably not the value most people thought just a few years ago.

On the bright side, his top BR age comp is Yaz, but I kinda doubt that’ll happen, on a really bad comparason I can think of, would be Juan Encarnacion, another super tools OF that had 0 patience , didn’t whiff that much. and never really amounted to much.

  21. Jamal G. says:

Heh, I was playing SOCOM the other day, and this ensued:

Guy #1: “Anybody wanna join a clan?”

    Guy #2: “I don’t join clans, I’m a dog without a leash, I’m a beast.”

    Guy #3: “…An unranked beast.”

    • Mike A. says:

You play COD World at War yet? When you beat the campaign, you unlock a special online match where you and up to 3 others are locked in a house and Nazi Zombies try to break in from outside and kill you. The longer you go the harder it gets (Level 1, 2, 3, etc). There’s boards over the windows and stuff that they rip off and you can rebuild. But you can’t go outside and the zombies can get in from all sides.

      It’s pretty awesome.

  22. Mike A. says:

Nice hit by Rodgers right there.

  23. Ryan Grant needs to hurry up and get four straight tackled for a loss with a fumble here.

COME ON, RUGGED, NASTY, PHYSICAL SAINTS DEFENSE! FUCK RYAN GRANT UP!!!

  24. RalphieD says:

yea nazi zombies is kick ass…i got to level 20

  25. A.D. says:

    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/.....ite-s.html

No multi-year deal… Yanks could still be in the hunt!!!

  26. Jamal G. says:

Drew Brees > All other NFL Quarterbacks.

  27. Mike Pop says:

Colston was huge there !!! Just won me the week

  28. My current NFL MVP ballot:

    1.) Kris Jenkins
    2.) Clinton Portis
    3.) Albert Haynesworth
    4.) Peyton Manning
    5.) Ed Reed
    6.) James Harrison
    7.) Kurt Warner
    8.) Brandon Jacobs
    9.) David Stewart
    10.) John Abraham

  29. Yeah, this game is proof positive that the Packers wouldn’t be Superbowl contenders had they kept Favre.

This defense blows chunks. I know the Saints passing attack is good, but come on.

They should retroactively take away Al Harris’s 2007 ProBowl appearance.

  30. Man, I can’t wait to hear Philly knuckleheads boo Donovan McNabb when he goes three-and-out in his first series on Thanksgiving Thursday.

    So sad.

    • Mike Pop says:

Is it more sad then people booing A-Rod.. The dude has won 2 MVP’s for us and people boo him lol… I love it, my friends are like we should of let that guy go, we should of never traded Soriano… Dudes are asses

  31. [...] As if all that wasn’t bad enough, there was even a report on Odalis Perez, from ESPN Deportes, which quoted the pitcher saying: “My agent is working with National. We have an offer for two or three years and is subject to fine-tune details.” That, as you can guess, has been debunked. This saves us from a mini heart attack. [...]

  32. Baseballnation says:

Jenkins and Haynesworth definitely get the love but Fred Robbins is having an all pro year and is probably the Giants defensive mvp.
