Tigers announce Laird trade
ByHere’s the Tigers announcing the Gerald Laird deal. GM Dave Dombrowski is sitting on the left, manager Jim Leyland is looking very interested to his right. The guy standing is one of MLB’s PR people, I missed his name. Dombrowski said they considered Jason Varitek, but lost interest once the Sawx offered arbitration.
The Maddux press conference starting in about 15, that should be great.

Will Maddux be on ESPN ?
I don’t know. I’m sure ESPN news will cut in.
Great job guys, I’m so jealous that you got credentials to the Winter Meetings. Have a great time!
This Laird trade is great. With Varitek declining arb. The Sox are in not so good of a position now that they have no cathcer. I assume that they at least expected Tek to accept arb. Texas just traded the accessible catcher (Laird), now if they want Salty, martinez, or Teagarden they’ll pay dearly. It could have been a smart move for the rangers to get what they can for Laird without letting boston know and then dangling their young prized catching prospects for some quality pitching.

Bobby Abreu arbitration discussion, meet Gerald Laird acquisition.
Gerald Laird acquisition, meet Bobby Abreu arbitration decision.
You two kids play nice…
I was just about to note the comparison. Interesting that Dombrowski acknowledged that.
Absent the Type A pick compensation status, Bobby’s probably firmly in the mix for the #3 RF/LF/DH bat on the market (behind only Manny and Dunn).
But, if a team has to give up a pick for him, I’d say many of those teams would move Burrell and IbaƱez in front of him, possibly Floyd, Hinske, Garrett Anderson, and Emil Brown as well.
