Get your very own Manager of the Year Award
ByIn 2003, Tony Peña, the Yanks’ current bench coach, won Manager of the Year when his Kansas City Royals finished with a winning record for the first time since 1994. This week, Peña seemingly auctioned off his trophy on eBay. It seems that the winning bid was for a whopping $200. So clearly Tony wasn’t after the big bucks. I do wonder though what the backstory is.

Why would he sell this? Does he really need the $200? If so, the Yankees should be paying him more, haha.
If it was sold on consignment as stated, that it was probably given to someone in lieu of payment for something else, and the guy he gave it to was the one who actually sold it.
Personally, I like the idea. He didn’t ask for the trophy, and his team folded in the second half that year and went nowhere. I wouldn’t be overly attached to it if I was him, either.
I don’t get this.
Maybe he has some sort of grudge against KC (His firing, his son’s time there, etc…) and just wanted to get rid of it all.
OR
Maybe someone stole it from him, lol
Ahaha
Why didn’t I find out about this? I would have bought that and put it right into my empty trophy case.
Sox make another move (MLBTR)
Aardsma for Fabian Williamson
I thought Aardsma was decent, I have no clue who Williamson is.
NVM, Aardsma had a 5.55 ERA, and Williamson isn’t even in A ball yet. Makes no sense but obviously, Williamson will be a star, otherwise Theo wouldn’t have traded for him.
I stand corrected, he has played ONE game in A ball.
…and has never had anything to do with Tony Peña and his Manager of the Year Award.
The Open Thread hits at 7, as it does every night when there’s no game. Save your
obsession withdiscussion of inconsequential Red Sox moves for that one.Damn, didn’t realize you made this post.
My B.
It shouldn’t really matter who wrote the post! It’s a minor point, and we’ve been fairly flexible with it. But we’d like to keep things relatively on topic.
Your the one that gets really pissed about it though, No one really goes back to look at open threads and nothing gets read when I do that.
Fair enough. I don’t mean to get pissed. We just want to avoid the LoHudian problem of runaway comment sections. That’s our rationale for keeping something of an eye on the comments.
It’s totally understandable. With internet fame, people like LoHudians are roam around. I bet you lohud was pretty tame before it was pretty much everyone’s source of insider Yankees news.
roaming*
Ben, you’ve gone mad with power.
I give you credit Ben. Its like when you have a really cool professor, but you still need to realize that they are the teacher. And, if you aren’t harsh, people won’t take it serious.
Can you blame him? Looking into theo’s eyes is like eating a hot fudge sundae while marissa miller
blogives you a back rub.[...] Ben K. of River Avenue Blues reports that Tony Pena’s Manager of the Year Award was on eBay for $200. [...]
I would have sold it at least a thousand…guessing from the looks of the trophy, he didnt really care about it.
Brian Bruney asked for $1.55M vs the Yankees $1.1M.
Melky asked for $1.7M while the Yankees $1.2M.
Why would the Yanks offer more to Melky when clearly Bruney has more value considering Melky is no more than a 4th OF.
sorry Ben for the off topic post.
To answer your question, because a CFer is more valuable than a middle reliever. But Mike will have more on the arbitration figures in an hour.
But wouldn’t a decent reliever be better than a terrible CFer?
Yes. Bruney should probably be making more. Odd.
the injury probably reduced his leverage
Yeah but the ineptitude that is said CF should take away a bit of his value. Just because he has a label of CF should not give him something. Bruney has been productive in his time with the Yankees.
huh?…melky deserves only $700K while Bruney should have his $1.55M
Bruney was figuring it out last year so he makes a good set-up man.
Because Melky is a CF and Bruney is an RP.
Melky had a OPS+ of 68 last year, Bruney had a ERA+ of 242 last year.
Given, Melky had a lot of appearance and Bruney had a very small amount of appearances, and melky gains some value for his arm, Bruney is way better than Melky.
(I know it’s comparing apples to oranges but still, ERA+ and OPS+ show them relative to an average player)
I don’t disagree, but them’s the breaks.
It’s not just about last year. Melky has a good season, a decent season and a bad season in his 3 full seasons. That’s basically the same performance that Bruney has. It just happens that Melky’s bad season was more recent than Bruney’s.
Good point.
Good point, but the degrading player is not worth more than the improving player.
Melky signed for 1.4 million. It is on lohud.
Your going to pay for this.
Not me! I don’t have 1.4 million. Even if I did I wouldn’t spend it on Melky.
I would buy a nice Benz and live a good life.
I’m sorry I’m still understanding this arbitration thing, if they don’t reach on a deal i.e Ryan Howard and the Phillies, does that mean he becomes a FA right now?
Nope, they take it to a hearing. Then a group of arbitrators decide.
still trying*
