A-Rod could miss WBC with hip injury

By Joseph Pawlikowski

Well, at least A-Rod has finally made a baseball-related headline. Jack Curry of the Times reports that the third baseman will meet with a hip specialist in Colorado on Wednesday. Furthermore, the Yankees’ medical staff found a cyst when examining Rodriguez on Saturday. This will almost certainly keep him out of the WBC, as the team doesn’t want him risking a serious injury.

Now, back to your regularly scheduled open thread.

Joe B. says:

*Waits for the steroids/cyst comments*

He’s trying to show up Jeter- “I dont need your stupid WBC.”

He wants to get back into Yankees camp so he make sure he beats out Angel Berroa for the starting 3B job.

Nice piece on Cano today, Moshe. Really enjoyed it, and you obviously put a lot of work into it.

steve (different one) says:

agreed. just read it, really good stuff.

Thanks. It has been rolling around in my mind for a while now, and I finally found a few minutes to put it together.

steve (different one) says:

if this was steroid related, wouldn’t the team keep it under wraps?

they didn’t HAVE to announce that he had a cyst, just that he was seeing a hip specialist.

John says:

is a cyst harmful? how do you treat it?

anonymous says:

I think they cut them out.

Expired Milk says:

If you’re me a drunken night usually “cures” them

“The WBC is bad because it exposes players to injury” firestorm in 3… 2… 1…

27 this year says:

1/2…1/4…1/8…

27 this year says:

30 min and counting.

iYankees says:

Keith Olbermann just “broke” the news on his show and I think he implicitly linked the injury to steroid use.

Artist formerly known as 'The' Steve says:

Silly. Everybody knows he’s using HGH now, not steroids.

I LOVE Keith Olbermann, but come on…

The Evil Empire says:

So is there a chance A-Rod might not be ready for opening day?

John says:

hopefully…mo willing

John says:

let me rephrase: hopefully he IS ready

If he has a procedure to remove said cyst and that helps his play would it be considered a “Performance enhancing procedure” and if so, does that mean a 50 game suspension? This IS A-Rod!

Local anesthesia and a scalpel are both “perfromance enhancing substances”.

John says:

as are contacts, glasses, and LASIK

Chris says:

More appropriately, cortisone is a steroid and a performance enhancing drug, yet is routinely injected to allow players to overcome injuries and remain in the lineup.

iYankees says:

Apparently, it doesn’t hinder his functionality.

Here’s the press release from the Yankees:

John says:

i should go up to vail to support A-rod tomorrow

is it just me or does this seem to be PeteAbe’s fault?

Shamus says:

Pete Abe takes any chance he can get to fire a shot off at A-Rod.

Or Girardi for tht matter.

I hate that fat slob… But I do enjoy the info he relates on his blog.

Memo says:

Yeah, he’s good at compiling info in one place because you sure as hell don’t go to his blog for analysis. He’s horrible.

Aaron says:

Awfully convenient timing. This will only provide more fodder for the idiots I have to live around (I’m just outside of Boston).

Artist formerly known as 'The' Steve says:

Didn’t the Mitchell Report say Clemens had a cyst on his butt?

Uhhh-huh.

Yyyyyyep.

I’m just gonna leave that ol’ hanging curve ball riiiight there.

27 this year says:

someone on steroids will smack it out of the park.

Artist formerly known as 'The' Steve says:

Cysts are so ridiculously common that its just absurd that all the amateur MDs are going to go run with this, as if they know what they’re talking about.

steve (different one) says:

is an abscess the same as a cyst? i think that’s what Clemens had.

i know you were joking, but i’m genuinely curious.

It was an abscess.

Artist formerly known as 'The' Steve says:

Damn. Ruins my bit.

Ryan S. says:

Its not really a cyst.

Its a third ear.

GG says:

I would love to see a pole of Yankees fans about what they thought A-Rod was on in 2007 steroids, hgh, both or nothing. He probablly does something really crazy rare and expensive but I think hgh would make him too big so I doubt he takes it even though he could get away with it.

steve (different one) says:

if A-Rod was on something in 2007, it probably means that half of baseball is still juicing since it would mean that there are steroids that the tests don’t pick up.

and if there is a way to cheat and get away with it, you can bet that lots of ballplayers are doing it.

that said, i have no idea.

Drew says:

He was on nothing. Really crazy and rare? HGH will make him too big?? come on guy

Artist formerly known as 'The' Steve says:

As we all know, nobody ever had cysts before people starting using Steroids. Non existent. Just didn’t happen. Ever.

As a matter of fact, I believe the CDC has a report out saying its impossible to form cysts anywhere in the body WITHOUT steroids being present.

John says:

I actually found this online somewhere:

” If cysts become infected or grow to a bothersome size, health care providers can remove them or prescribe treatment with steroids or antibiotics.”

Ryan S. says:

I could see the headlines now:

A-ROD CONTINUES TO OPENLY USE STEROIDS.

John says:

A-ROID FINDS EXCUSE TO JUICE AGAIN

billbybob says:

Lets hope that A-Rod doesn’t pull any Kobe-like manuevers while in Vail.

Memo says:

Well, I’m thinking he would get less hate from the media if he did compared to what he is currently guilty of.

J says:

I hope Yanks have insurance on the $275 mil. Me guessing, it will be Cody Ransom @ 3B for 2009

Rich says:

Good. The timing of the WBC is ridiculous. So A-Rod missing it is a plus.

Reggie C. says:

But this stupid little cyst could cause A-rod to miss live game action. How could A_rod get ready for the regular season by not facing live game action?? He can’t.
