I am really disappointed to have missed out on the Sterling bashing today. I was just commenting on this when, after Rodriguez ended the game over the weekend with a home run, Sterling worked in 4 or 5 catch phrases in a row, while totally disregarding everything on the field. Rodriguez did not smile into the dugout, or launch his helmet into the air, or get greeted by Swisher 10 feet before home plate. There was no celebration, no pie in the face.
There was an A-bomb from A-rod. Yankees win. Theeeeeee Yankees win.
Edwar scares me more than Veras. Veras has no idea where it is going, but that makes it difficult on hitters as well. When he stinks, I feel like it moves slowly enough for the Yanks to get him out of there. Edwar, on the other hand, has hitters just sitting on his stuff. If they are wrong, he K’s them, but if they are right, things get ugly in a hurry.
what confuses me is how awful these guys have been after being awesome last year…i know relievers(aside from the elite) are volatile from year to year, but with this much deviation?? edwar looks like has a 2 seamer now which he just can’t control
i just don’t get how these guys are STAYING god awful…not even improving a little
3.7 hr per game this year at the new yankee stadium. 1.8 or so last year. Obviously, still early, and that number has come down over the last few weeks (tonight doesn’t help), but it is still a lot.
Ok, time for an elementary lesson in probability and statistics. Too many people seem to believe the ‘He’s due’ argument, or that the ‘Law of Averages’ implies that someone who’s 4-4 will make an out or someone batting .200 MUST go .400 for the next month because he’s a career .300 hitter.
At bats are not perfectly independent, but it’s rather safe to say that someone being 4 for 4 does not make it LESS likely for them to get a hit in their 5th at bat.
At bats are far from perfectly independent, since all kinds of things change especially the quality of the opponent. This isn’t rolling die or picking numbers out of a hat.
Agreed. But you can’t say that going 4/4 makes it less likely a guy gets a 5th hit. Especially given that the reliever he’s facing in AB #5 is worse than the guy he faced in ABs 1-4.
I know it’s early but can we say the relative success of Pena and Cervelli as rookies can be largely attributed to being unheralded guys who came in under the radar with no pressure to perform? Or is it just too small of a sample size and we’re all falling in love with them too early?
I dont think most of us are falling in love with them too early, cause most of us know what they are- guys who probably aren’t going to hit much but will field the hell out of their positions. That is what we are seeing, and the fact that they dont look to be overwhelmed at the plate is just a plus. It is nice to see the Yankees are at least able to find some bench players for the future in their system.
If you want to use Cervelli’s 16 games at Trenton from this season to prove he is a .200 minor league hitter, why not look at the 21 games last season and conclude he is a .315 hitter? The .200 at AA is just as small a sample as his good sample here.
I’m loving Pena. What he’s shown with the bat (if he can keep it up all year) is enough so far to give Cash & Co reason to “ask” Jeter to “voluntarily” move to LF next year.
(if he can keep it up all year) is enough so far to give Cash & Co reason to “ask”possibly think about “asking” Jeter to “voluntarily” move to LF next year.
Who’s the staring C? I sure hope you aren’t counting on Jorge. Squatting and throwing for 9innings can’t be good for 38 year old hamstrings and shoulders. Jorge will be our DH in ’10, mentoring whoever the C is. C is really the only position I see open next year.
The hell? I leave for fifteen minutes and the Yankees are up by one run, in the 9th, and Mo is not pitching? Moreover, RAB isn’t assailing Girardi for it? What is this Bizarro-world?
Don’t worry, he’ll grow another one, no big deal. Though my greatest fear is that Brett Favre would try to buy the one that fell off and see if Dr. Andrews could attach it to him…
Phenomenal sweep. Really. Truly. But I have to wonder why we can’t put anybody away. Every game seems to be a nailbiter. Of every game in the win streak, only one has been by more than 2 runs (I believe). Just an example.

Oh come on, they’re doing the drive of the game in the 7th?
Yo, fuck Trumbull.
http://instantcrickets.com/
lol. So who’s hoping to see Veras again next inning! C’mon Mike.
I think they give out game awards way too early. Shouldn’t they give them out after the game?
Gotta give em out when people are still watching I guess.
Does it really matter?
“Melky Cabrera” and “.320″ are not something you expect to see in the same sentence.
maybe with “OBP”, or “wOBA”.
I do!
ssshhhhh, dont wake melky up
Last year melkey swings at that.
Oh well.
Narsty changeup.
That was a pretty sick changeup to K Melky.
I have to say that 4 weeks ago, Melky would have struck out on that high ball 3. I know he struck out anyhow, but his approach is much better.
Yep, he’s been having much better at-bats all year. That’s what is making me believe that he’ll actually be able to stay pretty damn valuable.
last year, melky would have struck out 1 pitch sooner
I’m starting to see less negativity towards the Melkster on this blog. Me likes.
me too, i like melky, lets go melk man

There was an A-bomb from A-rod. Yankees win. Theeeeeee Yankees win.
I threw up. Iiiiiiiii threw up.
E-Ram time.
So, question, should this score hold (I know it’s a gamble getting through this inning), does Mo pitch the 9th?
Albie could do it. If he gives up a run then get Mo warming up.
Jesus Christ 17 hits and 14 walks in 16 innings. Ouch.
5 homers too.
Edwar goes down when Bruney’s back since he still has an option, right?
We can only hope
Are the Yankees actually going to do that, or is that just the consensus here on RAB?
I would assume that’s what they’re going to do.
And, if it’s the consensus @ RAB, it’s going to happen. After all, the Swisher trade went down and the Jeter/Damon flip went down.
Lanky Edwar Ramirez
we’ve been pitching nick punto like he’s babe ruth
Coke in the 9th? Have to be I would guess unless there’s a jam in this inning
Definitely for the lefties.
Man I miss having a bullpen. Seven runs should be enough to win you a game no matter what.
Well, in fairness, Pettitte allowed those four runs.
It’d be nice to have a bullpen, but Andy wasn’t good today, no matter how someone slices it.
that doesnt make sense.
you score 7 runs, your starter gives up 4 runs but you should win no matter what?
Why is he so hard to put away?
Grit, guts, and the Twins way.
thats what she said.
Edwar scares me more than Veras. Veras has no idea where it is going, but that makes it difficult on hitters as well. If they are wrong, he K’s them, but if they are right, things get ugly in a hurry.
Veras’s problem is walks, Edwars is walks, and having a very hittable fastball.
That was prescient.
Eh, saying Edwar is not very good is far from prescient.
Not really. Not when you’ve seen it happen a zillion times already. Less “prescient” and more “Past is prologue”
I’m more scared of Veras, but I know what you mean.
These announcers are fatigued. Call to the bullpen.
Heh, I love Keith Law:
and jamie moyer has 250 wins
Wow. He golfed that.
And he’s not very good.
Fuck. This. Bullpen.
coors field east
You know you suck when you give up a HR to Denard Span.
That was a yankee stadium homerun folks.
I dunno dude he got it pretty good. I thought it was gone off the bat.
That’s just a deep flyball in alot of stadiums.
There goes Tex’s insurance run.
Ugh, that was like a chip shot.
Make that 6 HRs.
Denard Span? I mean, please.
help me obi wan bruney, you’re my only hope
hahah, you’re a very underrated commenter here dkidd +1
one might say he has ridiculous upside…
Don’t say his name three times or he will appear …..
huh?
7-5 and M & M boys still coming to bat…getting that queasy feeling again. Damn, these Twins are annoying.
I really don’t want Rivera to be in this game.
You trust anyone else with a two run lead?
Veras and Edwar bring balls and HRs to the party. Lots of fun.
Where are the glasses for Edwar???
Ugh, Swisher didn’t play that well. He wouldn’t have caught it anyway, but he’s not looking good in RF lately.
Meh, good hitting by Spann. That ball was way down and he golfed it just barely over the fence.
Bandbox
Agreed.
I think id prefer to not see morneau against edwar.
Uh Oh have a Coke and a frown
This is a big out. Break up M+M for the 9th.
Guys…
The bullpen has surrendered one run, and Bruney wouldn’t be pitching right now.
Chillax.
They really shouldnt use Mo tonight. Pitched 1 inning Thurs, 2 innings Saturday plus another inning yesterday.
Who do you suggest ‘save’ this game?
Swisher. Plus, he’s hitting like a pitcher, too.
Coke, albie, Aceves
I hear Boomer and Orel are going at it. Anyone privy to this?
Oh yeah. Orel is completely no-selling Boomer’s wordplay.
They also had a big “agree to disagree” moment over likely future 300-game winners.
You could cut the lack of chemistry with a knife.
hehe. My buddy told me about it, I have yes though..
Girardi’s letting Edwar pitch to Mauer?
Phil Coke WHO?
Coke gave up HRs to both Mauer and Morneau, isnt Edwar’s strength against lefties?
Coke gave up HRs to both Mauer and Morneau, isnt Edwar’s strength against lefties?
Edwar is still pitching to Mauer because……..
THROW STRIKES.
DO NOT WALK HIM
Oh, do *NOT* walk him…. ohhhhhhhhh
Was that your Andrew Dice Clay impression?
That was quite possibly the worst thing that could happen.
Well at least no HR or XBH
No, there were at least three things that could have happened that would have been far, far worse.
Really? A HR wouldn’t be worse?
Justin Morneau, killer of dreams.
motherfucker.
Dear Edwar:
Enjoy scenic Scranton, PA.
Isn’t he out of options? I may be wrong.
No. Veras is out of options not Edwar.
true, ed has got to be close to 3 years of MLB service. Isn’t that the limit?
Nope. Veras is out of options and Edwar isn’t. I’m sure that’s going to be part of the equation when Edwar is in Scranton tomorrow.
Edwar, pack your bags for Scranton.
Edwar is betta than this trust me.
That doesn’t mean he isn’t going to Scranton.
Another gutless outing from Ramirez.
A batter too late.
Wow. Well the odds are against Morneau 5 for 5 right? law of averages, right?
He’s due for an out
Not really how it works, but I’ll buy into it for now.
haha .. i hope your right. Coke just needs to make sure he doesnt leave the ball over the plate like he did last time.
He doesn’t have to go 5 for 5, he just needs to go 1 for 1 now.
And 60% of the time, he makes an out. That was in that 60%
What was Girardi waiting for?
This is not especially promising.
I trust Coke in any other spot, but Morneau has homered off him the 2 times he’s faced him.
can’t do it everytime.
By the way guys, I got fired friday. It was a shitty job and the boss was an absollute bitch but still, when ya get fired that shit hurts.
Where were you working?
At an after school program. Me and the boss weren’t the best of friends to say the least.
Eh don’t worry about it dude, I got let go from my job back in March. It’s the cool thing to do nowadays.
Does Edwar stop and pick up his stuff before heading to the Scranton shuttle?
I’m not sure who is pitching worse now, Edwar or Veras, but Edwar will certainly be heading down because of the option.
ya tie game, the big canadian will go deep
If he wasn’t already 4-4, I might agree with you.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.....dependence
You’re welcome.
yes!!!! i jinxed him
or K but you know…
Not tonight. Law of averages.
Wow. Wow.
Heh, Morneau really wants to tie this up.
Mourneau looking for a slider the past 2 pitches.
*Crosses fingers*
wow Coke is focused
let’s go
He did it!
Coke is it!
BIG K FOR COKE!!
Stayed with the gas. Nice.
ATTA BOY COKE
Way to be, Phil!
Let Coke finish the game?
yes please
If your saving Mo, philly yayo it is!
Coke blew past Justin M.
Double-barreled fist pump by the Bombers’ battery? BUSH!!
Papelbon does it, it’s sheer raw emotional gritness.
but him and KRod do it at the end of the game!!!
*breathes sigh of relief and puts drink down*
breaths sigh of relief and celebrates with a drink
That’s exactly how Girardi drew it up.
what confuses me is how awful these guys have been after being awesome last year…i know relievers(aside from the elite) are volatile from year to year, but with this much deviation?? edwar looks like has a 2 seamer now which he just can’t control
i just don’t get how these guys are STAYING god awful…not even improving a little
For what it’s worth, Edwar was looking pretty heinous at the end of last year. His heinousness this year is not much of a surprise.
Oh, Phil, don’t let Aubrey catch you doing that.
+1
Bush league fist pump there.
Here’s to Coke (+ hopefully Melancon), Bruney, and Mo. And to never having to see Edwar in a big spot again.
I hate emotion on the mound
-Mike Francesa
But I DO like a nice Diet Coke in the afternoon.
Or 87 of them.
Don’t worry Mike, I’ll hit a home run for you
- Aubrey Huff
3.7 hr per game this year at the new yankee stadium. 1.8 or so last year. Obviously, still early, and that number has come down over the last few weeks (tonight doesn’t help), but it is still a lot.
What are other stadiums at?
Who is this phil coke? DELCARMAN COULD CLOSE IN TEH NL!!1!
Hello Mr Gammons
+1
Haha! Suck a dick Gammons.
so can okijima and ramirez, at least thats what they said on espn…
so can any reliever with an era below 4
I like coke for the 9th too
Cone and Singleton w/the brownie points.
Bruney chillin in the pen!! what a good sight!!
Teixera and A-Rod speaking but they hate each other right.
they’re told when ever the camera turns on them so they can pretend to talk. then when the camera turns away, they go back to fist-a-cuffs.
Good AB for Pena.
Is Pesky another word for Grit or gutty.
It’s one step below. It goes:
1. Gritty
2. Gutty
3. Pesky
4. Ignitor
5. Makes things happen
6. Ballplayer
7. Does the little things
8. Sparkplug
9. Winner
10. Scrappy.
11. White
12. Extremely talented at hitting/fielding a baseball.
U forgot one more:
“heart and soul”
Orel’s a B-Jobber.
facepalm.gif
Nick Punto makes things happen.
At bats are not perfectly independent, but it’s rather safe to say that someone being 4 for 4 does not make it LESS likely for them to get a hit in their 5th at bat.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.....dependence
Also, there is no ‘Law of Averages’. Please read the following two links.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Law_of_large_numbers
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Law_of_averages
You’re welcome.
No one claimed it was fact. More of a talking point.
i think it was just wishful thinking and looking for something to grab on to
Can you do long division? Can I send you my homework?
:snort:
gracias…enlightenment is a beautiful thing
At bats are far from perfectly independent, since all kinds of things change especially the quality of the opponent. This isn’t rolling die or picking numbers out of a hat.
Agreed. But you can’t say that going 4/4 makes it less likely a guy gets a 5th hit. Especially given that the reliever he’s facing in AB #5 is worse than the guy he faced in ABs 1-4.
True true
Dude, watch the game.
Ugh. Orel Hershiser is a B-Jobber.
What? Why no Matsui PH?
Cervelli is batting .375, strange as it sounds. He don’t need a pinch hitter.
Another sac bunt coming up for Cervelli.
Sample size. .200 at Trenton don’t necessarily lie.
in 58 ABS, last year in 73 he hit .315
he’s neither, like most catchers he’s in that .250 range
If you want to use Cervelli’s 16 games at Trenton from this season to prove he is a .200 minor league hitter, why not look at the 21 games last season and conclude he is a .315 hitter? The .200 at AA is just as small a sample as his good sample here.
Too small for Cervelli, but I think we got a good idea about Peña.
Just came up in my Liveblog, and I’m not sure. Little help?
What’s “oaktag”?
It’s an inside joke – essentially means ‘FAIL’.
It’s RABtalk for “massive fail” Look a few pages back for the thread about the Damon sign.
Thanks guys.
HAHAHAHA
Ah, he didn’t really had to bunt. He hits well enough.
I’m loving Pena. What he’s shown with the bat (if he can keep it up all year) is enough so far to give Cash & Co reason to “ask” Jeter to “voluntarily” move to LF next year.
Let’s see what happens the second time through the league first.
(if he can keep it up all year)
is enough so far to give Cash & Co reason to
“ask”possibly think about “asking” Jeter to “voluntarily” move to LF next year.Yeah… about that… still not enough.
Probably not going to happen, as nice as it is to have him come up like this.
Oh god, man. Easy.
Hate to say it, but quite true, especially when Jeter’s actually hitting close to Pena’s average.
You might need a timeout.
Maybe YOU do.
Hahahahahaha… no. Pena can’t hit at all. And Jeter hasn’t been a problem in the field.
Why everyone keeps talking about Cervelli batting .190 I have no idear. The guy batted .313 in Trenton last year
Makes for a better story
So, who pitches the 9th?
Coke.
Please don’t be one of those, “Let’s look back at all the Yankees’ missed opportunities” games. I HATE those games.
I’ve liked Cervelli’s MLB tour this year.
Do you think they send him to AA where he was .190, or to AAA?
Or does Molina’s leg injury “linger” for a few extra weeks?
Gotta be AAA. And it’ll let him work with Hughes in preparation for next season, when he’ll be the backup catcher and Hughes will be the #5 starter.
Who’s the staring C? I sure hope you aren’t counting on Jorge. Squatting and throwing for 9innings can’t be good for 38 year old hamstrings and shoulders. Jorge will be our DH in ’10, mentoring whoever the C is. C is really the only position I see open next year.
No he won’t
After last year and this year, plus Matsui coming off the books, the smart money says: Jorge Posada = DH in 2010.
After this year meaning an unrelated hamstring injury that came running the bases while DHing. Right.
That’s a good question. They’ll probably keep him at least till Molina comes back.
Of course, then to AAA or AA?
AAA
That was nice of the ump to walk the ball out after Cervelli took a foul tip off the junk.
Come on Coke.
C’mon, Phil. throw strikes.
Can’t BB a dude who’s OBP% is less than .300
come on phil!
good, tie him up high and tight sets ujp the slider low and outside.
And… there goes the double play. UGh.
“WHAT, DO YOU WANT EM TO CHOP ME UP AND ME TO THE POOR?”- JASON KUBEL
That was a great movie.
*FEED ME TO THE POOR
Wow, Teix with the glove.
Cuddyer is the guy who scares me here.
See? RBI!!! You see the worthless nature of that stat right there.
Smooth play there by Teixeira.
Man everytime I see Tex make plays like that, I say to myself, how many runs did the yanks lose with Giambi playing 1st.
One more out…
I love the glove on Tex. Not to often you see the pitcher barehand the toss from the 1bman.
God I hate Carlos Gomez. Please let him make the final out.
Don’t walk Carlos Gomez, please.
hate gomez
please end this right here
CANNOT let gomez get on base…
One more strike, Coke!
Take it home Coke.
fuck
Ugh.
Mercy.
Tell me he did not BB Carlos Gomez
Ugh, are you kidding?
Starting to think that Coke needs an adrenaline rush to put him over the top. He’s a different pitcher with nobody on base.
Don’t blow this…
Watching the pen walk so many guys is infuriating. Gomez, who could easily be on 2nd in a second, has no business walking.
it’s alright boys keep the faith. Coke will deliver.
Im not worried still.
Strikes please.
How does he not get coke to chase something
calm down phil
i think its safe to say phil coke can’t close in the nl
Man, Coke’s rattled…
Um, Jeter struck out on that pitch earlier.
The hell? I leave for fifteen minutes and the Yankees are up by one run, in the 9th, and Mo is not pitching? Moreover, RAB isn’t assailing Girardi for it? What is this Bizarro-world?
He’s pitched a lot recently.
Yeah, but Joba could do it.
Mo’s pitched a bunch the past few days.
thankfully most of the posters here are aware of Mo’s recent workload
Here we go!
jeeez coke
he just wants to make sure there is another walk off
I don’t want another walk-off. Just win NOW.
where the fuck is mo????????
Did you see what happened to Nathan Friday?
Wanna see Mo’s arm fall off?
The Yankees will sell it on steinersports.com
Don’t worry, he’ll grow another one, no big deal. Though my greatest fear is that Brett Favre would try to buy the one that fell off and see if Dr. Andrews could attach it to him…
I have a feeing that they’ll tie it up.
Problem is with the lefty mashers up soon really cant take Coke out. Unless you think Tomko can definitely get either Span or Harris out.
You cant plan three hitters ahead like that.
Lets go Coke.
3 amigos from scranton
Exact that two of the three never played in AAA.
Who is this Phil Cook guy?
Redmond, at least in the past, has hit lefties well. Grooving a 3-2 fb here worries me.
Phew, got it done.
hellz ya
Smile, Phil.
Thank Mo!
I love baseball tonight when the Yankees win.
Redmond swung at ball four three times. Phew.
FUCK YES
w00t!
http://www.wildbirds.org/images/broom_big.jpg
Whoa swung at Ball 4.
Phew….
Now I know why this is only Coke’s 1st save.
Actually this is coke’s first save cause we have Mo.
wow, coke nailin it down
YANKEES WIN!
I had to charge my computer, but oh man, Phil Coke was totally deer in the headlights.
Is it just me or did he look like he was about to cry?
I like seeing tex pumped up.
Yankees win, thhhhaaaaaaaa Yan-Kees WIN!!!!
never in doubt lol
Thankfully I was wrong
Love the name. LMFAO.
So only walk-offs get the pie in the face?
LOL, if AJ does it every game, he’ll run out of whip cream too soon.
Did Chris Berman just say something nice about the New Yankee Stadium? I didn’t think ESPN employees were allowed to.
Boomer says what he wants.
it never occurred to me that Mo was unavailable, but thinking back to the last 4 games, yeah…makes sense.
http://www.gascoals.net/Portal.....tBroom.jpg
Phenomenal sweep. Really. Truly. But I have to wonder why we can’t put anybody away. Every game seems to be a nailbiter. Of every game in the win streak, only one has been by more than 2 runs (I believe). Just an example.
impossible. A-Rod hit 3 HRs, therefore all of the games must have been blowouts.
this homestand >>>>>>>>>> last homestand
Well, Mo has nothing to worry about.
I always imagine Mo waiting for the arrival of his replacement eagerly…the NEW “Chosen One,” who will finally let him rest peacefully.
FINALLY on the RIGHT side of a sweep!!!
I love that Gameday has Coke’s Out Pitch as the changeup, given that he, apparently, didn’t throw one tonight.
I think that helped Phil “I need a role” Coke realize his role.
1st sweep, 1st 6 game win streak, 1st time 4 over, 1st time back-to-back for Tex-Rod, and 1st save for Phil.
+1. Even if the sweep shaved a couple years off all our lives. I’ll take it!
lol Kruk is rediculous right now….Morneau – He’ll see Coke a few more times and dial that up….A-Rod and Tex only hit their HRs b/c the SP balked and was hangin his head…lollol
Wow, really?
What a moron.
Wow, really?
What a moron.
Did anyone call him on this?
what a tool.
Good win. Bring on the O’s!
kruk said he’d take mauer & morneau over arod & tex
What a jerk.
Mauer’s kidneys beg to differ.
if you’re just talking offense, that’s silly.
if you’re talking age, contracts, positional importance, etc…it’s not that crazy.
Mauer is the balls.
it was strictly in your line up as 3-4 hitters
ok, they asked the same question on YES.
yeah, that’s silly.
Agreed. Although Morneau is overrated.
And that would make him an even worse GM than Mr. Traded for Mo Vaughn Phillips.
how nice is it to have a 6 game win streak and look up and see CC Sabathia is starting your next game?
Winfield was a great player.
TERRIBLE TERRIBLE on tv.
cause he looks 7 feet tall standing next to those two idiots
That and he offers no insight and isn’t very articulate.
Think about who he is replacing.
Yeah, anyone who says that getting 1-inning saves isn’t that hard, take a look at this as Exhibit #1.
He pitched 1+.
Point taken. But, generally speaking, the idea was he turned to a jelly-legged mess once the 9th started. Just makes me appreciate Mo even more, is all.
Yeah. I just caught the postgame interview with Coke. He was doing pretty funny imitations.
Or maybe Phil isn’t a closer. Exhibit 2 I suppose.
Krunk was good at baseball. Not so good at thinking.
