Game 103: Alive on the deadline

By

Last night’s frustrating loss aside, the Yankees are still sitting pretty atop the American League East. They bolstered their bench by acquiring Jerry Hairston Jr. earlier today, though he’s not going to arrive in time to be in uniform tonight. Cody Ransom lives to see another day.

Shelley Duncan has been called up to add some righthanded pop to the lineup, although you have to wonder how long he’ll be around with Hairston coming aboard. Jon Albaladejo was optioned out to make room for Shellster on the roster. I haven’t seen confirmation anywhere, but it’s safe to assume either Xavier Nady or Chien-Ming Wang was moved to the 60-day DL to free up a 40-man spot.

Young southpaw Clayton Richard was scheduled to start for the White Sox tonight, but he was traded to San Diego in a package for the injured Jake Peavy this afternoon. Long reliever DJ Carrasco will make the start instead. Here’s the starting nine:

Jeter, SS
Damon, LF
Teixeira, 1B
A-Rod, 3B
Matsui, DH
Posada, C
Cano, 2B
Melky, CF
Hinske, RF

And on the mound, Sergio! Mitre.

  1. Dela G says:

let’s go yanks, lets get em tonight

    final score prediction?

    7-4

  2. They’re actually playing this game? I figured they would have just closed up shop for the season and gone home, since the Red Sox just won the freaking World Series by trading for Victor Martinez, who is going to hit .400/.500/.800 down the stretch and Casey Kotchman, who once hit 5 grand slams in one inning.

  3. I like it when big deals come outta absolutely nowhere.

  4. Mike bk says:

Montero 1 for 1 with an rbi.

how legit a prospect is eduardo nunez at trenton?

  5. Nick L says:

Failed my Road Test today, I could use a big win from the Yanks.

    • Mike Axisa says:

Wow, you are one pathetic loser.

      /Lloyd Christmas’d

    • pat says:

haha don’t worry dude, I failed twice and look at me.. I’m kick ass!

    • Fail once, try again. I got lucky with mine, I shouldn’t have passed.

    • Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Taking mine on August 12th, what part did you mess up on?

      • Meh, drove around with my eyes closed, killed a couple of guys. No biggie.

      • Nick L says:

i did perfect the whole time, the last turn was a left hand turn at a intersection… I made the turn and apparently the guy thought the oncoming traffic was to close when i turned so he failed me for not yielding the right of way.. so in other words i cut of the oncoming car… but he must have been drunk because the car was no where near us.

        • Salty Buggah says:

Damn, he was tough. I got lucky. I was going 10 under and then 15 over, hit a sidewalk, almost missed a stop sign but he reminded me, didn’t know what some of the signs were, and probably several other mistakes. But I’m pretty good now, I hope.

          • Nick L says:

this guy was literally making fun of me for making that turn afterward. easily the biggest douche i ever met.

        • Nick L says:

The worst part is that im picking up my car tomorrow morning, and the next road test available isnt until september. But enough about this, lets talk some Baseball.

    • JMK says:

Don’t feel bad. I somehow passed despite being able to only parallel park. Good luck on your next run.
      /From Jersey…No cop, no stop
//Has never used a turn signal
      ///Be afraid, be very afraid

    • Salty Buggah says:

I hope they win today too.

I was nervous so I hit the sidewalk when turning but luckily the guy was nice and didn’t mind it and I was lucky there was no traffic whatsoever. It’s OK, you will get it.

    • Riddering says:

I passed mine on the first try but had to listen to my road test guy tear me down for 15 minutes about how he didn’t want to let me on the road yet couldn’t take enough points off to fail me.

That was six years ago and I have yet to kill anyone with my vehicles! Suck on that, you old grumpy geezer.

So, uh, anyway. The moral is: go get ‘em next time!

  6. Salty Buggah says:

I hope the bats come out swinging and Mitre performs to his FIP. Oh and Go Orioles, for this series.

  7. Manimal says:

Am I the only one still worried about our Starting pitching situation? Some people are content relying on waivers just because the economy is bad.

  8. Salty Buggah says:

Tex: “I don’t think anyone can complain about bringing in CC (Sabathia), A.J. (Burnett) and myself. Guys are stepping up for us this year. Joba (Chamberlain) is stepping up, Phil (Hughes) is stepping up. We’ve got everything we need here.”

“I said from the very beginning of the season, we have everything we need to win here,” Teixeira said. “I think we’re showing that. When we play our best baseball, we’re going to win. We just have to keep working hard and play well the next two months.”

Yet, some are still jumping off the ledge for not making a trade that would hurt as we would have had to overpay for many players that they. (And if the prospects we trade blossom, they will still complain that we should not have made the trade)

  9. Manimal says:

Could we see Shelly pinch hit tonight?

    • whozat says:

More likely they see him start against a lefty tomorrow or the next day. I figure I’d PH swisher against a lefty if they put one in.

  10. I can’t find my bookmark =(

  11. So, assuming that Melky keeps starting the lion’s share of the games when Gardner gets back, our 4 man playoff bench is gonna be:

    LF/CF/RF/pinchrunner – Gardner (L)
    LF/RF/DH/1B/3B/pinchhitter – Hinske (L)
    C – Molina (R)
    2B/3B/SS/LF/CF/RF – Hairston (R)

    Not bad. Splits:
    RHP 177 PA .277/.351/.406 | LHP 54 PA .267/.365/.378 – Gardner
    RHP 112 PA .250/.357/.427 | LHP 34 PA .321/.441/.571 – Hinske
    RHP 49 PA .222/.271/.356 | LHP 12 PA .400/.500/400 – Molina
    RHP 238 PA .255/.303/.389 | LHP 103 PA .253/.310/.418 – Hairston

  12. JMK says:

Anyone see the Winners of the trade deadline video on ESPN? You’ll never believe this but Peter Gammons thought the Sox were the big winners of the deadline.

    http://espn.go.com/video/clip?.....id=2521705

  13. J.R. says:

Not sure how many people watch the Giants, but there will be a fight tonight or tomorrow.

After Sanchez threw at Utley and they retaliated the next inning. Mark my word, fight tonight or tomorrow.

  14. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Ortiz at it again 3-0 Sox

    ROIDSSSS

  15. Salty Buggah says:

So what are the chances we get Duchscherer? I mean, what other team may place a claim on him?

    I really want him.

  16. dkidd says:

as much as i’d like another pitcher, it would be great to see andy come up big in a playoff game one last time

  17. So the Sox called up a guy named McBeth.

They better watch out for the crazy wife…

  18. Joba or Hughes-To-the-pen says:

Why do we need Jerry Hairston JR?Whats the difference between him and Eric Hinske or Cody Ransom.

Sometimes when Cash doesn’t get what he’s looking for he does deals just for the sake of doing it.THere not one reason to have this guy.

  19. dkidd says:

nick green with another error. the universe is starting to make sense again

  20. Mr. Max says:

Girardi is talkin about how much flexibility he’ll have with Hairston AND Ransom. Gulp.

  21. cjc says:

I know its old news and I need to get over it but since YES just showed the highlight again it frustrates me

    Wise Dewayne fucking Wise seriously

  22. E-ROC says:

    Prediction: 7IP 5H 2ER 4K for Sergio Mitre; Yanks win 10-2

  23. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

    TIE GAME GO O’s!!!!

  24. Mike Axisa says:

Did they just say the promotion was a Yankees uzi???

  25. John Duci says:

I feel like the Yanks NEED to win today for some reason. Probably because Mitre is pitching and the Redsox dealt for V-Mart but c’mon boys lets get this one!

  26. Dela G says:

hopefully they beat the crap outta corrasco

    thank goodness richards is gone

  27. E-ROC says:

    Nice hustle by Jeter.

  28. VO says:

    Nice Jete.

  29. Nick L says:

thats the way to start it off

  30. John Duci says:

    Good fucking hustle Jete

  31. cjc says:

nice work by carasco way to hustle

  32. Dela G says:

    michael kay is a moron

  33. Manimal says:

“Hustles his little tail off every time”

    Thank you John Sterling.

  34. Salty Buggah says:

    Aite Jete nice start

  35. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Derek Jeter with a leadoff single…

    In play, run(s) please!!

  36. Luis Polonia says:

Anybody else tuned into Hawk Harrelson & co. on WGN?

  37. cjc says:

    sooooooooooo John Smoltz is gritty

  38. Whoa, Damon’s breaking multiple bats in the same at bat? GREENPEACE might have something to say about that…

  39. chriskeo says:

there is the damon broken bat of the day, michael kay wasn’t as excited as he could have been

  40. Manimal says:

Kenny Williams said the Peavy deal was finalized with 23 seconds to spare. Pretty damn close.

  41. pat says:

    FJM LIVES!…

Making fun of stuff people put up for free on craigslist.
    http://itemnotasdescribed.com/

  42. Mike Axisa says:

Oh man, Carrasco’s season high is 51 pitches.

  43. John Duci says:

    TEX!!!!!

  44. cjc says:

last night tex was K’d nice to see a real zone tonight

  45. Charlie says:

    a tex message

  46. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

    That was beautiful

  47. Salty Buggah says:

    In Play, run(s)

    BIG TEXY!

  48. cjc says:

    this is going swimingly

  49. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

    Nice A-Rod!

  50. Mike bk says:

why on earth would u bring the infield in there with Mitre pitching?

  51. VO says:

    Great start.

  52. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

    5 batters, 4 hits, 3 runs!!

  53. Salty Buggah says:

    Productive out>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>K/Popout

  54. Salty Buggah says:

    Matsui!

  55. Kyle R. says:

Wow. Jorge hits into more DP’s than Jeter. And that’s alot.

    • Jose says:

      2009 Jeter GDP: 11
      2009 Posada GDP: 8

If by more you mean less, then yes, Posada does ground into more DP than Jeter.

      • Mike bk says:

there you go with those pesky facts again.

      • Riddering says:

        2009 Jeter games played: 96
        2009 Posada gamed played: 70

While Jeter has hit into more, Jorge has juuuust more GIDPs per game.

  56. That was a nice inning, except for Jorge.

  57. Salty Buggah says:

Damnit Jorge. I wanted to drive his pitch count higher. But im not complaining about the 3 runs.

  58. chriskeo says:

carrasco is already at 19 pitches, this could be a fun night

  59. John Duci says:

Ok Mitre they spotted you 3, now shut them down.

  60. Carrasco is efficient. I’ll gibe him that.

  61. Salty Buggah says:

    Ok, Surge, 6-7 solid innings.

  62. Mike bk says:

i guess they both forgot that danks guy the white sox have.

  63. E-ROC says:

    Cano with the range.

  64. Mike Axisa says:

    Lazy catch by Cano.

  65. pat says:

Fucking robbie makes everything look so GD easy.

  66. For lack of a more creative name... Alex says:

Cano just wanted to bump up his UZR. And he did it smoothly.. BJ Upton style.

  67. Yankee1010 says:

Keep throwing that sinker Mitre. That boy is moving.

  68. Mike bk says:

just as i thought they screwed that up too. peavy has 3 years and an option for the 4th.

  69. Salty Buggah says:

So this guy today has a small zone? Where did ball 1 to Thome miss

  70. Ooh torture scene in my book, 16th century French style!

    • The Artist says:

      Describe, please.

      • This one count has been found guilty of a crime he didn’t commit, sentenced to execution but first they’re going to torture him to reveal his accomplices.

So they strap him to a table and then encase his legs in wood panels and use a hammer to drive in wedges that would break the bones.

Except because the count has been so nice to the executioner, the executioner uses fake wedges made of leather.

  71. Yankee1010 says:

Ball 1 didn’t miss. That was a strike.

If they’re going to shift on Thome, shift. It killed them last night and it wouldn’t have necessarily made a difference there, but if they’re going to put Cano in RF, Jeter has to shift more. It’s ridiculous.

  72. Huh, I didn’t remember the little tidbit that Orlando Cabrera’s agent put a clause in his one-year deal with the A’s barring the team who has his rights from offering him arbitration this offseason.

    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/.....brera.html

So, getting Ladendorf from him was a savvy move, since there will be no draft pick compensation when he departs.

    • Mike bk says:

not to mention the money saved in the meantime. probably lose a few more games and get a higher draft pick too.

  73. Salty Buggah says:

cmon Mitre, get out of this

  74. Mike Axisa says:

    Oh come on Mitre.

  75. E-ROC says:

    Damn.

  76. cjc says:

can this guy ever have a clean 1st inning

  77. Salty Buggah says:

    Oh boy, cmon Mitre

  78. cjc says:

    painful just painful 22 pitches

  79. Mike bk says:

that was an easy 2 runs.

  80. Dela G says:

cmon surge, you can finish this shit

  81. Salty Buggah says:

SOMEONE FIRE CASHMAN! He didn’t get a pitcher, now we have Mitre in the rotation!!!!!

    /Fan Overreaction

    • Mike bk says:

personally i have never been comfortable with mitre, but imagine washburn with this of defense. concerning part for me of this inning is he is a sinker baller where everything is hit in the air.

  82. John Duci says:

    Throw strikes

  83. cjc says:

who gets pulled first mitre or carasco with these pitch counts

    • Mitre’s not really on a pitch count, just an effectiveness count.

I am curious to see how long Ozzie lets Carrasco go, though. He’s not really a fan of these newfangled concepts like “pitch counts” and “counting in general” and “strategy” and “thinking”.

      • Mike bk says:

well the point was he is throwing so many pitches at this rate he would only go about 3.

  84. cjc says:

my god this is hard to watch Trachsel like

  85. Luis Polonia says:

Well, is anybody that surprised? Mitre is a career journeyman starter who hasn’t ever been very good.

    • The Artist says:

You’re right, he’s our 5th starter and we shouldn’t expect much.

But I don’t think it’s too much to ask to have a game that’s watchable.

  86. Jose says:

One strike from finishing the inning with nobody on to 1 run scored and the bases loaded. That got out of hand fast.

  87. Dela G says:

    oh shit

cmon surge, lets get out of this inning

    pretty please?

  88. John Duci says:

    3-2 count 2 outs… FASTBALL!!!

  89. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

    godddddd

  90. Dela G says:

    thank you jesus

  91. chriskeo says:

Thank mo, those were a scary 29 pitches

  92. John Duci says:

All things considered Mitre will sign up for that.

  93. DGeezy says:

    woo mitre survived that

  94. E-ROC says:

After all that, Mitre gave up only one run.

  95. Mike bk says:

    bring on Josh Towers…lol.

  96. Charlie says:

whether he survived that inning or not, i just don’t think Mitre is good enough to be in the Yankees starting rotation.

  97. Luis Polonia says:

On the bright side, tonight seems like a good night to get Melancon some work. Let’s just hope he’s pitching with a big lead.

  98. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

    First pitch swings <3 Cano

  99. Salty Buggah says:

8 pitches to get 2 outs. 21 pitches to get the 3rd but allowed a run in the process.

  100. cjc says:

its like a battle to see who gets pulled first we should place bets

  101. Tony says:

I can’t wait for people to tell me Mitre is a solid option as they point to his FIP

  102. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

If Cano stole, then Melky grounded out moving Cano to third I would like that, but Melky failed to wait for Cano to steal. Bad Melky

  103. acb says:

thank god the white sox suck. boston would have had mitre out of the game in the 1st.

  104. Salty Buggah says:

The offense needs to keep hitting (no more DPs, lets get Carrasco out of this game) and hopefully Mitre settles down from here.

  105. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

    Shelley looks bored =(

  106. chriskeo says:

Wang hit the 60 day DL, according to Kay

  107. Mike Axisa says:

Did Kay just say Shelley is out of options? He’s an idiot.

And Hinkse could’t hit a breaking pitch if his life depended on it.

  108. cjc says:

who the fuck is that at first and what did they do with konerko bs

  109. cjc says:

oh some more grit for ya 5-4 O’s

  110. Charlie says:

yea john smoltz!!! I thought he “couldn’t” fail

  111. Jose says:

Why did Smoltz not retire a Brave? He is a shell of his former self.

  112. Salty Buggah says:

damn, only 30 pitches for Carrasco.

    Cmon Mitre, quick efficient inning.

  113. The Artist says:

    Eric Hinske?

That’s Kevin James and you know it.

  114. Salty Buggah says:

OH boy, cmon Mitre. No walks

  115. Dela G says:

man this kid is hard to watch

  116. Riddering says:

Wow. They just played Duran Duran “View to a Kill”. That brings back good memories, none of them involving Chris Walken.

  117. Yankee1010 says:

Looks like the offense is going to have to score plenty more runs at this rate.

  118. cjc says:

    batting practice

  119. BigBlueAL says:

So what will it take to get Hughes into the rotation again????

  120. DGeezy says:

ugh this is going to be a long night with mitre on the mound

  121. Russell NY says:

This has loss written all over it. And bullpen in the 4th inning.

  122. cjc says:

    sure why not

  123. Tony says:

Sergio Mitre is unbelievably bad. I don’t care if he magically escapes this game with 1ER. I don’t care what his FIP is. He sucks. Bad. He sucks real bad.

  124. For lack of a more creative name... Alex says:

How the hell did that happen again?

  125. frank says:

Mitre may not make it out of this inning.

  126. Yankee1010 says:

    PFP tomorrow?

  127. E-ROC says:

    OMG! Seriously?

  128. Mike Axisa says:

    Oh great googily moogily.

  129. Riddering says:

The White Sox are fucking with the infield grass between innings.

  130. cjc says:

they ruled that a hit what a joke

  131. Salty Buggah says:

    Oh boy

  132. Yankee1010 says:

The White Sox’ scorer is as bad at his job as Hawk Harrelson is at his.

  133. Dela G says:

oh lord, everyone is falling on there

  134. cjc says:

this could be 6-3 real quick

  135. Salty Buggah says:

    cmon DP

  136. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Triple play and I’ll grow my pubes…

  137. Charlie says:

this is really yucky. and i don’t care what you guys think, surely the yankees will soon realize that hughes has to start. and they seem to have been stretching him out lately, too

    • Luis Polonia says:

I think they may be slowly realizing it. They’ve been using him for more pitches lately. I think PeteAbe posted something about his usage earlier today.

  138. Tony says:

When will Arroyo clear waivers? Do not fricking tell me Mitre is the same thing.

  139. Salty Buggah says:

    NO bases loaded walk please!

  140. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

    FUCK THIS

  141. The Artist says:

It’s not easy to raise your ERA when you go in with 7.04, but John Smoltz has figured out a way to do it.

    http://espn.go.com/mlb/boxscor.....=290731101

Such depth. Wait till Penny and Beckett shoulder’s go kablooey like they did last year.

  142. E-ROC says:

    Beckham just missed a hanger.

  143. cjc says:

Shelly getting sent down won’t have anything to do with Harriston they are going to need arms tomorrow god damn 43 pitches

  144. Brazilian Yankee says:

Now I see why Cash didn’t trade for a pitcher. Mitre is a beast.

  145. BigBlueAL says:

Cant wait to see this rotation once Joba is no longer in it due to his innings limit.

  146. Charlie says:

oh, motherfucker. this guy is just awful. he’s like an even worse post-DL 2009 CMW. only one who never has or likely will find success in the majors

  147. Mike Axisa says:

Fucking idiot Melky, throwing to the wrong base yet again.

  148. Yankee1010 says:

Jesus. Both runners moved up? Unreal. The defense needs to pick it up.

  149. Dela G says:

    oh my god

    this is terrible

  150. cjc says:

terrible judgement from Melky but I guess when the pitcher take 6 hours between pitches you can lapse bit

  151. Brazilian Yankee says:

Nice of the Yankees to let the guy on first advance to scoring position.

  152. Had Melky Cabrera thrown to the right base, this game would still be tied.

  153. ChrisS says:

I think the Sergio Mitre experiment is over.

    Hughes.

  154. Jose says:

This front office is an embarrassment. We should have picked up Halladay. Forfeit this game and go home, sell the team and move them to Fargo.

  155. VO says:

Well, at least Ace can go today.

  156. charlespoet says:

I am so glad we picked up Hariston today and no pitching.

  157. Tony says:

When are they going to teach Melky about cutoff men?

  158. Yankee1010 says:

So, um, I understand it’s ridiculous to overpay, but let’s not try to sugarcoat it completely. It seems pretty clear that Mitre isn’t going to cut it. Obviously, you’re not going to give up Jackson, Montero, etc. for Jarrod Washburn, but it’s clear that Mitre isn’t the answer.

Can we please get Hughes stretched out?

  159. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

My Mitre Meter is running out, time to get give Mitre a ticket out of here.

  160. cjc says:

this is sick just sick its really hard to suck anymore

  161. Dela G says:

    oh lord

    flood gates

  162. BigBlueAL says:

Youkilis gives the Red Sox the lead with a HR.

  163. Charlie says:

goddamnit. if there’s any one who still defends having mitre in the rotation over hughes, i’d love to hear why

  164. charlespoet says:

    Sergio Ponson Mitre

  165. acb says:

why isnt swisher warming up in the bullpen yet?

  166. E-ROC says:

Mitre is hanging these pitches. Geez.

  167. DreDog says:

I kinda miss IPK. Thanks Mitre.

  168. No Halladay says:

    Mitre is out

  169. charlespoet says:

and David “The Solution” Robertson warming up. ugh!

  170. Buddy says:

so… this is the number 4 starter when joba reaches his innings limit.

if so. this is not a playoff team.

  171. r.w.g. says:

Hughes should probably be in the rotation.

But what if he doesn’t pitch well again? Then what do we do?

  172. Yankee1010 says:

Another problem with Mitre sucking is that it will make them more reluctant to skip Joba so that he can start in the playoffs. They’re not going to skip Joba so that Mitre can go out there and get killed.

Michael Kay, stop acting like the Pirates were some juggernaut. Were Sanchez, Wilson, LaRoche, Grabow, etc. going to be part of the next good Pirates team? It amazes me how this escapes people. Those guys had been there for years and they didn’t sniff .500. But, yeah Michael, keep them there because they were making the 1927 Yanks quiver.
