Yanks interested in Penny

By Mike Axisa

Via MLBTR, the Yanks have some interest in the recently released Brad Penny. Penny, who the Yanks creamed in his last start with Boston, is due to clear waivers on Monday and would then be free to sign with any team for the pro-rated minimum. His numbers are ugly (5.21 tRA, 4.48 FIP, 5.61 ERA) but the Yanks probably figure he’d be an upgrade over Sergio Mitre and Chad Gaudin as the fifth starter down the stretch. As a fifth starter for the pro-rated minimum during September, why the hell not?

Tom Zig says:

As long as we don’t pitch him against the Sox, I’m ok with it.

JMK says:

But could you imagine if he does and is lights-out? There would be riots in Boston, I tell you. Riots!

5th Starter says:

Do it. What’s the worse that could happen? The Yanks cut him again?

Salty Buggah says:

Yea, I’d take him and maybe he can twirl a few good games

Dela G says:

no thanks

maybe i’d use him for BP up 20-7 against the sox again

Rob H. says:

it’s worth a shot. Keep him away from teams like the Red Sox and Angels and he’ll probably do better than the duo of Gaudin and Mitre.

Tom Zig says:

He won’t be going to the Red Sox considering he came from there.

A.D. says:

Pretty sure he meant pitching against them

Tom Zig says:

Well Axisa is in favor it…what do Pawlikowski and Kabak have to say about this?

I never want to see Sergio Mitre pitch a meaningful inning for the Yankees again. If it means Brad Penny for three weeks, so be it.

Tom Zig says:

He did pitch effectively for the Sox for a while, i’m sure he has got something left in the tank.

A.D. says:

Nothing to lose, and he was pitching alright earlier in the year.

Maybe that Dirty Water is hurting the veteran pitchers, and they just need to get out of Boston

A.D. says:

Figure he could be interested to be able to stick it to the Sox, and the other contender looking for scrap heap starters are the Dodgers, dunno if he’d want that reunion

JMK says:

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know the last time the Sox and Yanks got together to make a deal?

Tom Zig says:

We don’t have to. Just gotta let him clear waivers. I’m sure he would love to stick it to the sox and get rid of his mandatory ridiculous facial hair

JMK says:

I know, I was just curious if there’d been a deal between the two times in the past decade or so. Any ideas?

Tom Zig says:

Mike Stanley went to the Yanks for Tony Armas and Jim Mecir.
1997

JMK says:

Wow, that was a while ago. Thanks, Tom.

Basil F. says:

wasn’t Sparky Lyle from the Sox for Danny Cater???

Gary says:

Cater was a very nice ball player…nobody talks about that. Getting Lyle for him was a great trade but don’t start making like Danny Cater was Jerry Kenney or anything..

They wouldn’t have to make a deal. Penny would become a free agent and the Yankees would sign him for the prorated league minimum.

Free Mike Vick says:

its worth a shot…it can’t be worse then mitre and gaudin!

i’d do it!

Tank Foster says:

I definitely try to sign him. He’s healthy, and he’s much better than either Gaudin or Mitre.

vin says:

Maybe he’s been tipping his pitches…

Michael Kay says:
Free Mike Vick says:

LOL great video..well played sir.

but the yankees really need to look into this…he is a better option then mitre and gaudin.

JMK says:

I’d bet he goes to the NL.

JobaWockeeZ says:

Yeah why the hell not? He’ll probably be better than Guadin or Mitre.

Charlie says:

you sound eerily similar to the writer of this post

His final moment in Fenway was saying “Fuck You” to Red Sox Nation, so he has that going for him.

E-ROC says:

In addition to Brad Penny, I know acquiring this player maybe redundant, but what about Matt Murton?

Johan Iz My Brohan says:

We have his brother in the farm system (Luke Murton) so I say we should go after him, but only if we can get Zach Greinke because his brother (Luke Greinke) is also in our system.

zs190 says:

I think Luke Greinke was released.

Lanny says:

I’d rather see Penny than see Mitre.

BaseballNation says:

Penny’s 4.53 fip tells me that he’d be light years better than Mitre or Gaudin despite his more then occassional lapses of control. Instead of this ring-around the rosie S%^! with the five spot with nobody’s who can’t perform I’d rather the Yankees unleash Phil “fucking” Hughes and allowing him to stretch out his innings while also enabling the Yankees to possibly give rest to guys like Pettitte in order to be fresh for the playoffs.

steve (different one) says:

but Gaudin’s FIP is 4.05…

JSquared says:

He was throwin 94-96 against us, if we can take him and use him as a filler in the rotation, it won’t cost much, just get Mitre off of TV, thank you.

Mike HC says:

I would definitely welcome the move if Penny wants to come to the Yanks, but I got the feeling he wanted out of the Sox-Yanks rivalry atmosphere. Some guys are better off pitching in Florida and LA where the atmosphere is more laid back.

If we can get him, while I don’t think he will be noticeably better than either Mitre or Gaudin as a starter, he could be valuable as a bullpen guy in the postseason. He could probably dial it up to the upper 90’s pitching for one inning and be very effective out of the pen.

jonathan c. says:

If we add him will we have HISTORIC DEPTH? If so, I’m all for it.

baseballNation says:

I hope that was a jab at sarcasm or that would have to be the biggest doo-maas statement of the day…Just saying.

ShuutoHeat says:

Give it a chance, he didn’t work out because the Sux took him and tried to project him as something he’s not.

Ogie Oglethorpe says:

Gentlemen, it is Sidney Ponson time.

DreDog says:

Can we sign him and flip him for a Smoak type bat?
