Scranton falls short in bid to repeat

By

Marc Hulet of FanGraphs broke down Andrew Brackman‘s season in 600 words. It took me three posts.

Triple-A Scranton (3-2 loss to Durham in 12 innings) Durham swept the best-of-five series and won the Governor’s Cup … congrats to them
Kevin Russo & Colin Curtis: both 0 for 6 – Russo K’ed twice, Curtis once … tough to score when your 1-2 hitters do that
Austin Jackson: 2 for 4, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 K
Juan Miranda & Chris Stewart: both 1 for 4, 1 K – Miranda tripled, walked twice & scored a run … Stewart walked & doubled
Cody Ransom: 1 for 5, 2 RBI, 2 K – was at the plate with the winning run on third and two outs in the 9th, but he struck out
John Rodriguez: 0 for 5, 1 BB, 1 K
Reegie Corona: 1 for 3, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 HBP
Doug Bernier: 0 for 3, 3 BB, 2 K – made the last out of the season
Ivan Nova: 7 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 9-7 GB/FB – 57 of 93 pitches were strikes (61.3%) … two outings in the playoffs, two brilliant starts
Zack Kroenke: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 2-3 GB/FB – 20 of 29 pitches were strikes (69%) … allowed a pair of inherited runners to score, hence the runs on Nova’s docket
Kevin Whelan: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 1-1 GB/FB – 23 of 45 pitches were strikes (51.1%) … he was cruising along, but then he started walking guys and left a bases loaded mess for
Eric Wordekemper: 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 2-0 GB/FB – 18 of 25 pitches were strikes (72%)

Double-A Trenton’s season is over. Akron leads Connecticut 2-1 in the best-of-five Eastern League Championship Series. Game Three is tomorrow night.

High-A Tampa won the Florida State League championship.

Low-A Charleston’s season is over. Greenville beat Lakewood tonight, but they still trail 2-1 in the South Atlantic League Championship Series (best-of-five). Game Three is tomorrow.

Short Season Staten Island won the NY-Penn League championship.

The Rookie GCL Yanks season is over after they lost to the GCL Marlins in Round One of the playoffs. The GCL Nats won the league championship.

Wow, Russo stunk it up in the playoffs.

I have a feeling Shelley would have gotten them a win tonight but oh well.

  2. Bryan G says:

Considering how depeted their roster is, I consider it a successful season for Scranton(for whatever that’s worth)

    • crawdaddie says:

I agree, I thought Tampa and SI would win their series, but had serious doubts about SWB due to their depleted roster.

Also, I hope Cashman finally gets rid of Igawa this offseason. I’m tired of seeing him on the SWB roster and being reminded what a terrible signing that was.

  3. Salty Buggah says:

So, this is the last DOTF of the season, right?

  4. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

This (hopefully) is the last time I ever see Cody Ransom in a DOTF, or in the Yankee organization for that matter.

  5. andrew says:

here comes jackson and a few more relievers right?

    • Jeffrey says:

Good question. Who else will be called up? I assume Juan Miranda since he is on the 40-man roster. Will Kennedy get called up to pitch out of the pen? Any chance Mitre and Duncan get DFA’ed in favor of bringing up Nova, Jackson, Kroenke, Russo, or anyone else?

      • chriskeo says:

According to the roster, only Ian Kennedy and Andrew Brackman are on the 40-man and not in the majors, and i doubt they would DFA someone for a reliever who wouldnt get much action

big time reader, small time commenter( might only be known for my ric flair-chops in the air comments when we got teixeira)…thank you guys for the DotF….i am truly appreciative for the work you guys put forth and i am a more knowledgeable yankee fan because of you guys….headed to a camping weekend with a few friends tomorrow and an ex is showing up, without me knowing until tonight…any suggestions fellow yankee fans? do i tell her to suck it or just mind my own business?

  8. Doug says:

wow, this desmond jennings kid for the rays looks to be a stud: .318/.401/.487 across 2 levels with a 67/67 BB/K ratio and 52/59 in SBs

wonder if he’ll make crawford or upton more expendable in the offseason

  9. DRU says:

Sorry in advance…the novel Im about to post is a little off topic and VERY long…..Ive just been dying to say it

FYI – Im new to this blog, but was a steady poster over at Newsday.com for a couple years before they fucked up the site. Ive been dying to get involved in another blog. Pete’s blog is WAY too crowded, hopefully this can be my new home…lol

How good does that Cashman move to NOT get Santana look now??

Lets say that Cashman pulled the trigger on Johan. This is what our current team would look like =

    1. Hughes would be gone, so no dominate RP #’s this year, and no young 4th/5th starter next year. So next year we would have to get 1 maybe 2 vet back end starters instead of investing that money in other areas of need.

    2. Melk would be gone, since Gardner got hurt, I bet that the Yanks would be paying Mike Cameron 10M this year to man CF, hit .220 and strike out 150 times. Say what you want about Melk being a 4th OF. He just turned 25 in August, is hitting .277 with double digit HR and Steals, plays a solid OF with a rocket arm and has been Mr clutch this year hitting .291 with RISP and .444 with a man on 3rd and less than 2 outs. He doesn’t strike out and takes walks, plus he’s hit how many walk offs this year? 3? 4?

    3. We would not have Nick Swisher because Jeff Marquez is what we traded to the White Sox for him, Jeff was part of the Johan package.

    4. We would not have a major league ready SP in the minors to compete for the 5th spot next year in Ian Kennedy, a kid who has completely dominated the minors and should be a good back end starter for years to come. ( hopefully )

    5. Since we signed Santana to a HUGE contract, ( making $ 18,876,139 this year compared to $ 15,285,714 CC is making in 2009 ), we would NOT have signed CC. He’d be in LA or SF right now dominating the NL. Oh, and Santana would currently be SHUT DOWN due to surgery. Johan is a great SP, but it was clear the year the Mets traded for him that his skills were on the decline. He no longer has a 95mph fastball to complement his change. The numbers dont lie…

    - His WHIP has gone up 5 straight years ( 0.92, 0.97, 1.00, 1.07, 1.15, 1.21 )
    - His K per 9 has dropped since joining the Mets , 7.9 in both years after registering = 11.4, 9.6, 10.5, 9.2, 9.4, 9.7.
    - His Hits per 9 has gone up 5 straight years ( 6.2, 7.0, 7.2, 7.5, 7.9, 8.4 )
    - His Walks per 9 has gone up 4 straight years ( 1.7, 1.8, 2.1, 2.4, 2.5 )
    - His HR per 9 is his 2nd worst of his career in 2009 at 1.1 per 9.

In 2009 he NEVER finished a single game. He pitched into the 8th inning only 3 times all year. So much for dominating the NL huh? As a side note, the Yanks KOed him in 3 innings this year, tagging him for 9 runs. The week before that the Phils jacked 4 HR’s off of him..at his home ballpark that is supposed to be a pitchers park. Speaking of that park, its has really saved his ass in 2009. These are his splits =

    Home – 8-3 – 2.43 ERA – 1.10 WHIP – .228 BAA
    Away – 5-6 – 4.09 ERA – 1.36 WHIP – .264 BAA

Are those ace numbers???? What would he look like playing in the new band box in the BX? I think that one game was just a taste of what his numbers would have looked like this year, clearly Johan is in decline and has a ton of money/years still left. The Twins were worried about his elbow 3 years ago, looks like they were right. CC is clearly the better pitcher today and has been over the past 2 years ( CC was the winner of the Warren Spahn Award the past 2 years, the award given to the best LHP in the majors ). Not only that, but CC is clearly the new leader of this club. He was the one organizing activities for the players in ST, took the entire team to an Orlando Magic game, when the Yanks were in Cleveland, he took the ENTIRE TEAM, paid for by CC, to a Cavs playoff game. He is the new voice of the Yankees..Johan??? Didn’t he show up Manuel this year? The guy doesn’t look or sound like a leader to me. Thats a huge X factor in this Yankee club of 09. Even when the other pitchers aren’t throwing that day, they’re all in the dugout. This group of individuals is FINALLY playing like a team, something we havn’t seen since the late 90′s, much of that has to do with CC. Ok enough about Johan right? WRONG!!!

    6. Ok so if we had Santana already, the emphasis in the offseason would have been centered around getting Tex, a player the Angels and Sox coveted. Since we would have been in on Tex from the get go, the price would have skyrocketed to get him! He’d either be on our squad at 250M since the Sox and Angels would have driven up the price, or possibly the Sox would have ponied up the cash since they would want to keep him away from the Yanks. So it’s quite possible that Tex would be a Red Sock right now.

In conclusion…if Cash made that deal, a non-deal that was BASHED by all these NY media assholes, CC would be in SF, Tex could be in Boston, we’d have Mike Cameron roaming CF, we’d have no stud 8th inning guy this year, we’d have no young pitching depth to fill the back end next year, we’d have no Swisher and Johan would currently be on the DL. What kind of record do you think the Yanks would have in that nightmare scenario? I can bet you my house we would not have the best record in baseball, thats for damn sure. I bet we’d be fighting for the WC with Texas and even if we did make the playoffs, we’d have to travel to LA to face the Angels in the 1st round.

    a nightmare indeed..

So here’s to you Cashman, even though the NY media begged you to get Johan, you did the right thing for the organization LONG TERM. You took the hit last year and setup this organization for many years to come.

    KUDOS!!!!

    • Yeah, there’s no chance I’m gonna read that.

      • the artist formerly known as (sic) says:

        Agreed. Absolutely not.

        • DRU says:

Is it a lack of reading skills or are you just posting snobs? lol

Just messing with you guys, I know its pretty fucking long. I guess in the future Ill just post Tenacious D videos from Youtube.

          • It’s partially the length, mainly the off-topicness, and a smidge of the posting snobbery.

          • the artist formerly known as (sic) says:

Its the fact that a cursory glance seems to reveal one giant long fallacy of the predetermined outcome.

            • DRU says:

Well maybe you should read the entire post before casting judgment. The post is pretty accurate, if I do say so myself.

              • Mike Axisa says:

The problem is, like tsjc said, is the fallacy of the predetermined outcome. Who’s to say Hughes wouldn’t be pitching to a 3.50 ERA as a starter for the Twins right now if the deal was made? Or that instead of trading Swisher because they didn’t have Marquez, they signed Adam Dunn instead?

However, I absolutely agree it was smart not to make the move, and it looks real good right now.

                • Doug says:

yeah, a lot of giant leaps were made, especially the tex one. not sure how you could say or even speculate how that would’ve played out

                • DRU says:

Very true Mike, there could have been several different scenarios. Couple things would be a given though…

                  1. We would not have CC, no way.
                  2. We would not have Hughes, Ian, Melk and Marquez.
                  3. Johan would be on the DL

You can draw your own conclusions from there.

Bottom line though, we are a better team for not making that deal. That’s really all I was getting at.

                  Thanks for responding though Mike!

                • DRU says:

Doug…the Tex going to Boston is a little of a reach, but you can GUARANTEE that if CC was not signed, the media and everyone else would have been pushing to get Tex on the Yanks. At the minimum, the price would have been a lot more. The Sox took a gamble not offering him more money because they thought the Yanks were out of it due to the CC and AJ signings. If they were battling the Yanks, they would have driven up the price for Boras. Scotty would have milked us. The way it played out in the offseason, us scooping him up undercover, was a DREAM scenario.

                • Doug says:

                  agree on 1. and 2.

not sure you can just assume santana would be on the DL though. maybe the yankee would’ve handled him differently this season or had him on a different offseason training regimen that would have kept him healthy.

however, i’m completely with you in that making the santana deal would’ve been a big mistake

                • Doug says:

DRU, honestly if the tex price would’ve been driven up above $200M (even to $250M like you speculate), I would’ve rather had the sox sign him. would strap them big-time going forward.

                • DRU says:

I think the Mets training staff is gettin A LOT of heat for all the injuries, maybe too much. There are only so many things a training staff can be responsible for, I dont think Johan is one. If you remember, the last year Johan was with the Twins, he was complaining about elbow issues. Johan was a ticking time bomb, I think he would have went under the knife regardless. I dont think the Mets abused him this year either, his innings per start was a career low in 09.

Oh well, its all speculation. I would just love for the NY media to give credit where credit is due. They’re real quick to jump on Cashman for bad moves, ( Sheff over Vlad…Pavano over Beckett…Giambi over Papi ) but say nothing when a good one is made. Since Cashman started calling the shots ( when the old man, and his Tampa cronies were taken out of the equation ), the team is better and the farm has improved exponentially.

                  Damn, I sound like a Cashman groupie…lol

                  GO BRIAN!!!!
