Yanks looking to host a bowl game at the Stadium

By Joseph Pawlikowski

There were rumbles back in July of the Yankees vying for a bowl game by December of 2011. It sounds like those plans have moved to the next stage. According to Stewart Mandel of SI, we should expect a press conference tomorrow regarding the game. It involves not only the Yankees, but Mayor Bloomberg and the commissioners of the Big East and Big 12 conferences. It sounds like New York could see its first bowl game since 1962.

The game, if approved by the NCAA in the spring, would be a battle of the lesser Big East and Big 12 teams: fourth in the Big East against seventh in the Big 12. Even so, it would have plenty of local draw, especially for the Big East teams. The inaugural game would happen around New Years 2010-2011, which is about a year ahead of the previous projection of December 2011.

If approved, the Yankee Bowl would be the second football game played in the new park. Notre Dame and Army are set to square off next season. Army games against Rutgers, Air Force, and Boston College are also scheduled for 2011, 2012, and 2014.

For an opinion on the matter, I’ll defer to Jay from Fack Youk.

“a battle of the lesser Big East and Big 12 teams”

Isn’t that a little redundant?

The entire Big East is “lesser.”

Is that Batman and Lex Luthor chilling in the front row?

I had that comic book as a kid. Only comic I ever bought. If I remember correctly, Ali beats the hell out of Superman, but they have to find under a filter that makes the sun red. During the fight they get attacked by some kind of monster, and they take down the filter and Superman saves the day. I remember the comic itslef was larger than other ones.

They should have left an option open to invite Notre Dame. They are definitely a “lesser team”. Same with Florida State :(

You know I’m a Canes fan… I was talking with a good friend of mine, a Gators fan, and I made a suggestion that immediately disgusted him so much, I knew it was fiendishly brilliant:

When Bobby Bowden decides it’s time to hang them up, either after this season or after 2010, the Seminoles should renege on their promise to coach-in-waiting Jimbo Fisher (who looks utterly average) and instead hire…

Steve Spurrier. Who is better equipped to compete with UM and UF in the recruiting wars than the Ol’ Ball Coach? Think about it.

He needs you, and you need him. It makes so much sense, it’s disgusting. It’s like Favre to the Vikings – it makes both fanbases sick to the stomach, but you can’t deny it’s a match made in heaven. (Or hell.)

Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

I say Florida State hire……..wait for it………wait for it……Jimmy Johnson.

BOOM!!!! That just happened!

Heh.

Seriously, though, if you think Jimbo Fisher is gonna resurrect the program, I’ve got some prime swampland I’d like to sell you.

Bo says:

Spurrier wouldnt be a bad choice for them.

Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

Don’t worry, I’m not buying that shined up turd either. Alumni would never, ever, ever let Steve Spurrier be hired at FSU. I was honestly shocked that he didn’t go to Tennessee. That is where he is a natural fit. FSU is going to be in some trouble, no doubt. They’ll need a dynamic head coach, that’s for sure.

Alumni would never, ever, ever let Steve Spurrier be hired at FSU.

That’s dumb. If we didn’t have Rex Ryan and Bill Belichick was available, I’d want him.

Outside of the obviously shocking and unexpected sex/rape scandal, I’m pretty sure Louisville alums are pleased with the Rick Pitino hire.

If someone can help you win, it shouldn’t matter that he helped someone else win before.

Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

I understand your line of thinking, but FSU is not going to say goodbye to 80 year-old Bobby and hire a 65 year-old Steve Spurrier. Florda State will get a young, dynamic coach who is forward thinking. Spurrier is a relic, a shell of his greatness. Alumni are tired of shells.

Okay, I can respect that line of thinking. Spurrier’s problem is not that he’s a Gator, it’s that he’s old. Fair enough.

Maybe try and buy out Jim Leavitt from USF? He’s built that program up nicely…

You’re a Canes fan??? I did not know this. Wooo GO CANES!

Yeah, no doubt. I didn’t go there like you, just loved them from afar…

Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

Just like 99% of their fans. ;)

You think that’s an insult, but it’s not.

Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

It is, but you just don’t realize it.
