Happy Birthday to us!

Open Thread: An Ace In Action
On Jeter and his improved defense

Hard to believe it’s been this long already, but RAB turned three years old on Saturday.  We share a birthday with Yankee farmhand Jason Hirsh, former Yankee cult hero Shane Spencer, former Yankee draft pick Donzell McDonald, Livan Hernandez, and some kid named Verlander.

A big thanks goes out to your guys, our readers. You make it all worth it, and RAB wouldn’t be where it is without you. The last year in particular has been overwhelming. Ben, Joe, and myself are all stunned by how much the site has grown in that time. Of course, when the team we cover wins the World Series, the positive vibe tends to trickle down. It was a great year all around in Yankeeland, and we’re looking forward to doing it again in 2010.

    • Slugger27

to be honest, until we traded for him i had never heard of him either

      • pat

True, but you’re not a guy whose job it is to talk on the radio about the Yankees for like 3 hours a day.

  • http://www.puristbleedspinstripes.com Rebecca-Optimist Prime (Optimovelist Primus)

It’s not just been great to read this blog, but to have met so many from it, pretty incredible.

I dunno what you guys planned when you started this, but you’re looking like you’re gonna be set for life.

    • pete

i’ve never met a fellow RABer up in lonely boston…:(

  • pat

Don’t invite Livan to your birthday party. He’ll eat all the cake.

Happy birthday to the best Yankee online community ever!

For the fun of it, our first two posts from Feb. 20, 2007:

      • http://www.puristbleedspinstripes.com Rebecca-Optimist Prime (Optimovelist Primus)

        “Who is Carl Pavano”

I feel like it doesn’t need any additional comments.

        • larryf

A guy who pitched well against us last october. Would not have liked losing to him!

      • Ed

It’s interesting to read those posts. The writing style is rather different – a lot more informal.

Kinda amusing to see Mike start the site off with a horrible prediction – “That said, I think there’s a better chance the Yanks will draft Jesus Christ than have Brackman fall all the way to 30.”

        Dorinda Pacheco says:

        good luck

Is this the very beginning of Our Mutual Friend SBGL?

Nah, I know Dorinda Pacheco. She’s good people, just a little excitable at the keyboard.

    • Mike F

congratulations for how you have grown not only in readership but in your comprehensive coverage.

by chance I’m wearing my “Save The Big Three” t-shirt right now

    • http://www.thesportsshowlive.com/ Joey H.

You have overthrown that LoHud place. Congrats. Not a better Yankee blog out there. Just like the Yankees, you’ve set the standards for the rest.

      • Rey22

Absolutely. When I started reading Yankee blogs, it was “LoHud and the rest”. Now its absolutely “RAB and the rest”. Just no comparison.

        • http://iheartrerun.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/rerun.jpg The Honorable Congressman Mondesi

To be fair, not much has changed, it was always “RAB and the rest.” It just took people some time to figure that out.

The 3rd Anniversary is the “Leather Anniversary”….so, here you go.

      Your choice, Stat Nerds!!!!

      • pat

I’ll take the first one… probably a little less worn out. Less oily too.

        • http://www.secondavenuesagas.com Benjamin Kabak

We also would have accepted “less used.”

          • pat

The first one has probably seen less balls.

      • Salty Buggah

“RE: Brackman… I think there’s a better chance the Yanks will draft Jesus Christ than have Brackman fall all the way to 30.”

Also, did you guys have some different commenting system back then or did Mike not know how to use the reply button? ;)

        • http://www.secondavenuesagas.com Benjamin Kabak

We had no reply button until at least after our first birthday and maybe even later.

          • Salty Buggah

            Yea, I thought so.

        • Salty Buggah

          Also, the 4th or 5th post: http://riveraveblues.com/2007/02/dont-call-the-rotation-set-13/

We have come very far from having Rasner and Karstens possibly going for 4th and 5th spots in the rotation to deciding which one of Joba or Hughes should we have in the 5th spot.

        • Salty Buggah

Also, Reply FAIL for me. Damn

    • Hangoverologist

Wow, I only started following RAB (and baseball in general) during the playoffs, but I’ve decided to stick around for the whole season now because of RAB and the game threads. To another year of the awesomeness of RAB!

      • Slugger27

you have a humorous screen name so youre off to a good start

us boring-namers have to work harder to earn respect

      • pat

IMO the best hangover cure is 2 asprin, a bacon egg and cheese on a buttered roll and a bigass gatorade.

        • bexarama

cheese fries. Or maybe that’s just better drunk food.

          • pat

Cheese fries would be an accepable meal as well. Since most BEC’s are crap outside of NYC and LI, I’d be down with some greasy fries covered in cheese.

        • pete

          64 ounces of coffee

    • pat

Now that i think about it, I don’t even remember what the old layout looked like. I just remember that this current one was a pretty drastic change.

      • Slugger27

the articles were on the middle-right side, and the ads were a little more spaced out

i think this new design was definitely the right move… looks better and easier to navigate

      • http://www.secondavenuesagas.com Benjamin Kabak

This is our third design change. We don’t have screenshots of any of them and the formatting’s screwy with the wayback machine. The first one had text in the center column with two sidebars. The asides were set off only by smaller headlines. The second was a hacked version of the Mandigo theme. We introduced threaded comments and the asides with the RAB logo. And you’re currently looking at the third version.

Right now, we have no redesign in the works, but when next we tackle it, we’ll probably go in a completely different direction.

        • pat

How hard would it be to implement a comment system silimar to the one SB Nation uses? Is that patented or trademarked or something? I imagine two problems would be that it takes up an assload of bandwidth and would require commenter registrations.

Not that there’s anything wrong with this system, I’m just lazy and enjoy the auto post.

          • http://www.secondavenuesagas.com Benjamin Kabak

The SB Nation is a proprietary system, but what features specifically do you believe are good ones there?

    • Salty Buggah

Tell me the truth, how many girls, if any, have you three scored because of RAB in its 3 years?

    • Bob Stone

Happy Birthday! Congratulations on great work. You guys are the best.

    • BigBlueAL

Congrats guys!! I miss Shane Spencer “The Homerun Dispenser” as John Sterling used to call him.

Happy birthday, you big stat nerds!

I haven’t even been reading RAB for a full year yet but it’s definitely changed the way the I follow and watch baseball. Thanks for maintaining such an informed and comprehensive site for Yankee info, guys.

Happy birthday to the truly premier independent Yankees blog!
