Open Thread: Rethinking the box score (part II)

By

A week ago today, Dave Allen at Baseball Analysts presented a new box score of his own, which Joe passed along as that night’s open thread. The new linear layout basically told the story of the game, starting at the first inning and continuing through to the ninth. It showed what batters each reliever faced, how they did against them, who came to the plate with who on base, all things the traditional box score lack.

Allen revised his creation a bit today, which you can see below. Click for a larger view.

This one does a better job of showing how the runners advanced around the bases and stuff, or at least I think it does. Some of baseball’s traditions are so firmly in place that we’ll have to wait for generations to pass before some fans and media are open to changing something as sacred as the almighty box score. For shame.

Anyway, here’s the open thread. The Olympics start tonight, while both the Devils and Rangers play their last games before the two week break for the games in Vancouver. The Knicks and Nets are off for the All Star Break. Talk about whatever you want, just be nice to each other.

Does this mean we’re closer to games only being played on spreadsheets?

  2. Accent Shallow says:

    Still hate it.

  3. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Tank Rangers Tank! Increase your chances of getting a top 3 draft pick in the draft lottery! I want Hall or Seguin!

  4. I cant Tim Lincecum only settled for 2/$23mm. But it seems hes hell bent on hitting the FA market.

    • Steve H says:

At least he won’t let that contract faze him. Unlike you know, Felix Hernandez.

      • pete says:

well i mean we don’t KNOW that it will faze Felix. There’s nothing in his makeup that suggests it will. We can only speculate that he will, since he’s latino.

    • kunaldo says:

when does he become a FA?

      • SF still has him for 3 more years until he becomes a FA. Usually you contracts with players that buy out the arbitration years + a couple years of FA. The Giants offered 3 years $E37mm deal. Which works out to 12.3mm per year. That seemed like a better offer as he can get injured in his second year and not be tendered a contract.

    • Steve H says:

Yes, the arbitration is either/or. So he was either going to get $8 million or $13 million this year, and it sounds like he had a strong case. He stood to make $13 million in 2010, and likely see a decent increase from that in 2011. At least it’s only 2 years though, not like Longoria bad.

      • I kind of agree with Mike A. on this one. Evan was in the big league less than a week when he signed that huge contract. I’d do it too, a bird in the hand and all…

        • Steve H says:

I can see the merit in it, but since he was such a sure thing, it’s tough to have 3 free agent years bought out. I think, if I know how damn good I am, I’ll let them buy out 1 year of free agency, max. Considering that baseball salaries have been increasing at ridiculous rates for years (and even the stars are getting paid during a recession), he left an absolute ton of money on the table.

      • The Longoria contract is just retarded. He could have easily made more in his third year of arb(assuming he plays at his curent level) than the life of the contract.

        • pete says:

/ the longoria contract is very very smart, since it will allow him to live out the rest of his days quite comfortably regardless of what could happen to him in the future, and it doesn’t inhibit him from landing a megadeal when he hist FA at what, 30?

        • Zack says:

they gave him that contract with less than a week’s of playing time. you cant blame a player for taking 17.5m guaranteed with less than 40 ABs in the majors, i dont care how good of a prospect he is.

  5. Looks like Dave Allen really wanted the World Series to be a single game.

  6. My two year old HP G50 is fading fast and I need to buy a new laptop. I’m looking for something in the $600-$800 range. The current favorite is Dell’s Studio 15 with 4GB RAM, 500GB HD, and integrated graphics, but I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations.

Man, I found the most depressing sports-related article (for me, anyway):
    http://www.nytimes.com/2003/12.....038;st=nyt

I know we never get Hughes if Pettitte stays, but the title/content makes me :(

  8. Shawn White has Rachel Hunter hair.

  9. bexarama says:

David Ortiz is NOT winning the MLB Network poll of “who is the best DH of all time?”, I am proud of the voters.

  10. Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

Lohus is ridiculously stupid. I have stopped posting there frequently ever since I snapped against trisha, but I dipped into the comments. They’ve copied RAB (don’t be mad, they gave RAB credit)and added reply buttons to the posts. The problem is the posters know they’re there and AREN’T USING THEM.

This drove me so crazy I finally wrote:

“Hey guys, just wanted to point out to all, there’s a reply button and no good reason not to use it when replying to specific people…”

The first reply (naturally w/o using the reply button):

Um, we know the button is there and most of us don’t want to use it…

Seriously? All I could say to that was:

Why not? That’s what it’s there for.

These people can’t be serious. How do you not like the reply button? That’s like the woman from Kitchen Nightmares who said she hated blue…

    • bexarama says:

MY WORLD IS CHANGING AND I DON’T LIKE IT!!!!!

    • I went through and read it. Those people are nuts.

      • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

Did you read my conversation with trisha from about a week or so ago? I kind of snapped and lost it, so now I can no longer post as “Wait till we do it all over again” and am now posting very, very sparingly under mundane names like “a fan” and “blogger”.

For the record, I still contend that I was right and that the Yankees do, in fact, occasonally make mistakes (seriously, this woman was contending that the Yankees never make mistakes, ever). However my arguement against the signing of Kei Igawa should have been worded better and researched better. I was still right, but it made me look bad.

If you didn’t read it, I’ll link up the thread.

  11. Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

Anybody watch Sugar? I just rented it. Looks pretty good. Cano gave it a good review (seriously).

    • I can’t watch it. Miguel Santos name is too similar to Miguel Angel Sano. I still haven’t forgiven the FO for not signing him. DAMN YOU CA$HMONEY TRILLIONAIRE!!!

    • ROBTEN says:

I’ve seen it; it’s a good film. It offers a much more layered perspective on professional sports, including the globalization of baseball, that is often missing in most “rah rah” Hollywood films.

If others have seen it, it might be interesting to have a discussion about it sometime. (Of course, after RRR has watched it).

    • Reggie C. says:

Watching it right now. Culture shock, loneliness, familial pressures, the white girls … this movie is pretty intense.

    • VO says:

Yes, I really enjoyed it. I could go on explaining why but that would just ruin it.

    • Esteban says:

Yea, I saw it a couple months ago, and I found it highly enjoyable. I found it more realistic and (spoiler alert) I thought the ending made it much better because it wasn’t the typical happy ending, though I don’t think it was a depressing ending.

  12. Jamal and I are playing “name five players on each team”, and for the Mets it’s “name 5 injured Mets”. We came up with 11 w/o trying.

  13. billbybob says:

Just saw The Wolfman. It was quite horrible.

  14. Tom Zig says:

I didn’t realize Jean-Claude Van Damme was still making movies:

  15. jim p says:

What’s this new box score look like for, say, A Rods 2hr/7rbi inning?

  16. pistol pete says:

How can the new box score help Randy Winn’s right handed batting stats of .158, .184., and .200. I still don’t get that one when Cash kept saying he needed a right handed bat and not Johnny Damon.

    • Rocky Road Redemption (Formerly RAB Poster) says:

That was only one small sample size last year. Career he’s much better.

      • pistol pete says:

125 ab’s over an entire yr right handed for a switch hitter is not a small sampling over the course of one year, actually it’s not that small at all since there are so few leftys. Those numbers are scarry but I’ll grant you his lifetime numbers are better, it’d be hard to believe they could be worse. I do wonder if age has crept up on Winn, his power numbers were atrocious last year, he may be on the downside of his career and even during his best years he wasn’t that great. Damon was and is clearly better and more proven. Limiting Cashman will prove to be a mistake, one they’ll spend money and prospects to fix next year, trust me.

        • bexarama says:

We offered Damon the best deal he got so far, what are you complaining about? I’d rather have him back than Winn, too, but reality’s reality.

Limiting Cashman will prove to be a mistake, one they’ll spend money and prospects to fix next year, trust me.
What are you talking about? O nos we don’t have an unlimited budget for one year!!! Go be a Royals fan.

        • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

Sorry but 125 AB’s is small however you slice it.
