Melky & Hinske get their rings
ByVia Dave O’Brien (with a h/t to Chad Jennings), Eric Hinske and Melky Cabrera both received their World Series rings yesterday, courtesy of Jerry Hairston Jr. Hairston, who was able to fly in for Tuesday’s ceremony because the Padres had an off day, picked up his ring as well as Hinske’s and Melky’s. As luck would have it, the Braves are in San Diego this week, so the three former teammates met up before last night’s game for the exchange. “Jerry shook our hands and hugged us,” said Hinske, “and said they told him to tell us, ‘This is from the team and we wish you could have been there.’”
It’s a shame Hinske and particularly the Melkman couldn’t make it back to New York for the ceremony, but I’m glad they were able to get their rings from a fellow 2009 Yankee instead of through the mail. That’s pretty cool. Make sure you click through the O’Brien link for the photo.

I hope Damon’s get lost in the mail
*gets
…….
I know you’re joking but….funny?
I’m not joking. I loved Damon and all he did for the Yanks, he was a HUGE contributor to #27 and I would’ve loved to have him back, but the way he left and what he said after leaving was BS. 2 years/14 mill wasn’t good enough to keep playing in “the place I loved playing?” Don’t get me started…
Soooooo just because he took a new job that paid better he clearly couldn’t have cherished his time here?
What is the monetary value on playing in New York as opposed to elsewhere. You seem to have deemed 2/14 enough for Damon, but what if it were 2/12, 2/10. Can you give an exact number?
The new job DOESN’T pay better, it’s for one year at 8 mill. Only if he gets more than 6 mill for 2011 (which I don’t think he will with all the other OF free agents on the market at that time) will it be a better-paying job.
Regardless of which job paid more, I think 2/14 is enough for a 36 y/o OF that has no arm to keep playing in a place he was so in love with.
I was disappointed Melky didnt make it since he was such a big part of the club with his personality and clutch hits. I just wonder why Melk and Hinkse weren’t able to get out to NY along with Hairston?
The writeup says why. Hairston’s Padres had the day off, so he was free. Melky and Hinske had to play.
But the Padres are playing the Braves right now
Good point. Braves were off too.
I assume Melky was busy clubbanging.
yeah it confused me because the braves played the padres monday and had the off day tuesday so it was odd that melky and hinske didnt fly out as well
Maybe they aren’t allowed to leave the team while they’re on the road or something, because of league rules.
I bet they mailed Damon’s ring to Boras, and Boras told him that the ring got lost in the mail. Boras then sold off all the diamond chips, melted down and sold the gold, and took all the proceeds to buy more tasty, tasty blood to drink.
I love you TSJC
Wrong. He wouldn’t sell the gold, he’d legally change his name to Diane de Poitiers and drink it all.
I solemnly swear not to dump on Melky Cabrera in this post. Must…refrain…from mentioning…triple slash line….
There are some unkind words for him in that ajc blog… he is at .097 it seems
He’s been utterly awful as the Braves’ leadoff hitter, batting .094/.216/.125. On the bright side, his BABIP is .115. So he’s not really going to do that poorly all season if he continues to put the ball into play.
yikes… well i do hope he does well there… good kid… good attitude.. will miss his smile.. and a few clutch hits
I’ll do it for you Ben:
The Melk Man’s line: .094/.216/.125
This is the only triple slash I care about:
Good arm/smiles/youthful exuberance
That’s the one that wins games, after all…
Melky’s sporting a solid -6 wRC+ so far this season. That’s right. Negative six.
His OPS+ is -8. I’m not quite sure how that works.
It’s like the opposite of screwing a porn star.
I wonder if they actually did mail Damon’s rings? I thought they might wait for Detroit to come to town and present him his ring. Despire the Boras situation, I will cheer Damon.
