Posada out 3-4 weeks with hairline fracture

Thames exits game with ankle sprain
Late rally can't overcome Burnett, bullpen blow-up

Via Marc Carig, Jorge Posada will miss 3-4 weeks after an MRI showed a hairline fracture on the bottom of his right foot. He took a foul ball of his foot in Sunday’s game, and the injury was originally believed to be minor. There was talk that Posada could have returned to the lineup as soon as today, but so much for that.

Obviously he’s going to hit the disabled list and the team will need to call up another catcher. Chad Moeller is the obvious candidate, but he’s not on the 40-man roster so a move would have to be made (Nick Johnson to the 60-day DL?). In fact, there’s only two catchers on the 40-man as it is, so they’ll need to make a roster decision regardless of who they bring in.

    That’s no good.

    • Scott

Does anyone know when Colin Curtis comes off the DL? If recovered, would he be call-up-worthy?

  • Alex S

This is 2009 Mets bad…in terms of injuries

  • thurdonpaul

ouch, the injury bug is biting hard.

  • BigBlueAL

Here comes Chad Moeller I assume.

  • Scooby

    This is beyond terrible.

  • http://www.thesportsshowlive.com/ JoeyH

Dare I say Romine? They said he’s hitting well.

    • http://richardiurilli.wordpress.com/ Richard Iurilli

      No.

    • http://www.thesportsshowlive.com/ JoeyH

Nah never mind. Just thought it over. Makes no sense.

  • Kevin G.

Who gets called up? Moeller? Eck.

  • http://richardiurilli.wordpress.com/ Richard Iurilli

When did the Yankees get the MRI results back? Why was Jorge still on the roster for tonight’s game?

    • Drew

Considering Po was walking around in the dugout, I’d assume they got the results late.

    • Neil

Why does it take three days to decide to do an MRI? You could have had a needed bench player for the last three games. My opinion is to bring up Montero. He can DH, catch and HE’S NOT DAY TO DAY!!! I’d like to file a protest on the managerial/GM decision making process!

  • Zooboy

Wonder what AAA pitcher will replace him?

    • Esteban

      boom. still got it

    • vin

This made me laugh… then cry (a little).

  • cjc

sure why not? This is awesome just awesome

  • chriskeo

So what move can the Yankees make to get a catcher on the 40-man, DFA a reliever? Logan?

  • zzzzzz

they keep mentioning romine…..theres no way they actually do it right? i’d assume they would keep starting cervelli and wouldn’t bring up romine as a back up guy.

how wild would it be if romine started and montero came up to dh by the end of this year? weird.

    • Hangoverologist

Yes, it would be wild. Wildly stupid by the FO. The kids need time in the minors. No need to rush them.

      • Drew

I agree, generally. Howeva, I see nothing wrong with organizations delving into their young talent for a short term, temporary fix. You make it clear to the kid that he’s here temporarily and his time will come, just not yet. Now, would I do that with Romine if I was the Yanks? I don’t think so. But if Montero was hitting, I may consider it.

        • Hangoverologist

I wouldn’t give Montero the call even if he was raking at AAA. He still needs to develop his defense and placing him in the bigs as a DH would stunt his developmental process. September is when Montero will get the call.

          • Drew

A 2-3 week stint helping your big league club shouldn’t retard anyone’s developmental process. Like I said, “short term, temporary.”

            • JPK

Jeter was called up for such duty in 95.
I don’t mind Chad Moller but I must say am very intrigued to see either of the young C’s.

      • zzzzzz

what if its august and montero’s bat is hot and johnson isn’t coming back and the yanks are fighting for a playoff spot with the rays? i can’t really think of anything legit to bring up romine though at all, thats why i’m a bit puzzled. maybe romine to back up in the playoffs if posada is out? craaaaaaazy.

p.s. i’m not a montero to the DH guy, just pondering outloud.

  • http://twitter.com/rebexarama bexarama

When it rains, it pours. Eesh.

  • Johan Iz My Brohan

Fuckin Mets, you bloody wanking contagious bastards!

  • BigBlueAL

I assume a roster move would have to be made to get Moeller on the 40 man no??

  • http://www.thesportsshowlive.com/ JoeyH

I say they call up Barajas from the AAA Mets affiliate.

  • Johan Iz My Brohan

Joe Girardi, you were a catcher once, get your ass behind the plate!

    • http://www.onedayonejob.com/ Willy

He looks like he’s still in playing shape.

  • Dave M

They could just throw Johnson on the 60 day DL.

    • http://www.thesportsshowlive.com/ JoeyH

      100% to happen.

  • Reggie C.

News like this overshadows any loss … even one like last night’s. We can’t rationally expect Cervelli to keep hitting at a .373 clip. He’ll cool off , and my fear is that it’ll come in the form of an extended slump. Considering Cerv right now is a better hitter than current starters Winn and Miranda, the bottom third of the lineup is going to look very unimpressive.

I’d love to pull off a trade for Derrek Lee, but the Cubbies are only 4.5 games back of Cincy. We’re gonna need Arod and Cano to keep smashing. Teix and DJ have to seriously wake the hell up and start chipping in consistently.

  • Meat Loaf

    Another one bites the dust.

  • http://www.thesportsshowlive.com/ JoeyH

Will they at any point consider looking around for a full time DH? Dye maybe? I just can’t stand to watch Miranda anymore.

    • Nick

Miranda can contribute given the opportunity.

    • ZZ

You can’t stand to watch Miranda anymore?

The guy has had like 15 at bats.

      Pretty short attention span.

      • http://www.thesportsshowlive.com/ JoeyH

Actually my attention span is good enough to know that even in the small sample sizes we’ve seen him over the past 3 years his plate discipline seems to be awful. Swinging at bad pitches. I just don’t see him as the long term solution.

        • ZZ

He has had 41 career plate attempts at the big league level. Making conclusions based on that is ridiculous.

          • Nick

he’s walked 12 times in that span, i guess that lends itself to “awful plate discipline” though.

he’s also shown the ability to walk a ton in the minors, ahh the wonderful world of looking things up its amazing!

            • Nick

yeah read that wrong but he’s still shown to be a disciplined hitter in the short amount of ML PA and his whole milb career.

            • forensicnucchem

According to BR.com he has 5 walks and 13 strikeouts in 43 career plate appearances. Still SSS, but certainly not overly impressive.

        • DJH

Winn,Pena and maybe even Thames are all worse players then Miranda right now. We got bigger issues then him being a half DH.

Although I agree that bringing in someone like Dye or even crazy ass Dukes would help because we are so short handed right now.

      • Drew

        + a million.
Dude has hit at every single level he’s played. Give him a chance.

        • ZZ

I think once Miranda gets settled in, he is going to do start doing some real damage.

I don’t think his success in the minors is a fluke. I love his swing and it is perfect for YS.

I am going on record saying Yankee fans will be very pleased with Miranda.

  • Drew

Who do we have on the Pirates roster? Let’s call Doumit up.

    • Hangoverologist

I’d love to see Andrew McCutchen.

    • Esteban

      winner

  • cg

“Alexander, Caesar, Charlemagne, and myself founded empires; but what foundation did we rest the creations of our genius? Upon force. Jesus Montero founded an empire upon love; and at this hour millions of men would die for Him.” -Napoleon

I’d die for Him to be ready :(

    • Nick

it’d be fun it he was but patience is needed.enjoyed watching him and scranton today on MLB network. He seems improved behind the plate since last time i saw him and threw out Tabata, who’s got 19 stolen bases this year.

  • DJH

It really sucks not having any quality OF’s in the system because Romine and Montero aren’t realistic so what we really need is some production out of our OF. Hopefully Swish is really getting better and Granderson can get back quick.

    • DJH

Realistic at C I meant not putting them in the OF.

  • The Brett Gardner Explosion

funny, the yanks are going to call up the BACKUP catcher at AAA. lol
    oy.

    this is getting u.g.l.y.

    • Meat Loaf

Uh, that’s because the starting catcher at AAA isn’t ready for the big leagues…

  • ARX

I feel like throwing myself into a lake. I know, I know, just a speed bump, we’ll be fine and cruising by July/August etc…but this is fucking ridiculous. What else could go wrong?

    • http://twitter.com/rebexarama bexarama

      Why even ask that?????

      Seriously, July/August, get here soon ;_;

  • theyankeewarrior

    Jesus.

    • The Brett Gardner Explosion

the yanks should call up Montero tonight and the headline for the papers tomorrow will show Thames slipping on a bat witha small pic in the top right of Montero, with that as a the headline
      JESUS!

      • Meat Loaf

No, they should not call up Montero tonight.

  • ShuutoHeat (Gardy = Thunder&Lightning)

Okay seriously, I think a naked ’09 Mets team+staff snuck into the clubhouse during the off season and totally defiled the place. Only logical answer I can come up with behind this crazy injury bug.

  • Matt-Pitt

Well, this blows, hard. It could be worse though (usually always can be)… Bright side, at least they are getting their injury bug outta the way early in the season. Every game counts from april-sept, but if they can hold their head above water with the likes of winn, cerv, pena, golson, etc… They should be alright when everyone comes back healthy and ready to play ball. Let’s just hope A-rod keeps up his quiet tear that he’s on, Cano continues to hit the ball, Gardner continues his pace and teix and the cap’n can step it up. I have faith this team will be just fine… Just gotta deal with the lumps now.

  • Dela G

    man this blows

    • Drew

Grandy and Swish can’t get back in the lineup soon enough.

  • NYC

    just great…

  • JobaTheHeat62

can the American league bat a pitcher if they want? I am pretty sure our Pitchers can easily out perform Randy Winn at this point.

also I wanna kick Boone Logan in the balls. He is to pitching as Randy Winn is to hitting, but 5x worse.

    • http://twitter.com/marcos_aguirre Marcos

Yes they can, and no (pitchers) they don’t (look better than Winn).

  • jim p

if i was cc (and i wish i were) i would start lobbying to bat 9th the next time i pitch

    • http://twitter.com/rebexarama bexarama

isn’t he actually doing that in interleague? =P

      • dkidd

        you’re right!

our line-up will actually be HELPED by losing the dh

  • Kevin G.
  • dkidd

it seems bad, but assuming swisher comes back soon, granderson is the only injury that was unexpected

    nick johnson: nuff said
    jorge: 37 year-old catcher
chan ho (as kam fong): history of hamstring issues

yanks are an old team that got very lucky last year regarding lack of injuries. as bad as 2010 has been, you could argue the red sox have had worse luck

  • mike c

i can’t wait for jesus to be MLB ready

  • Sam

I would rather have Chad Jennings than Chad Moeller. God oh God almighty, anyone but Chad Moeller.

  • EvoLuTioN aka Jobamania

i went to the game today and had some great seats. needless to say, the game sucked balls. Felt like we lost from the 2nd pitch of the game. Why the eff did girardi let AJ come out for the 7th? he was already at like 105+ pitches…….and then BOONE LOGAN? come on, its getting old, really.

    some thoughts:
Arod hit a BOMB that defied gravity.

2 base sac fly was cute…couldn’t be more embarrassing haha
How many bases did the rays swipe? We got hammered on the basepaths and even HANK BLALOCK stole a base(on a double steal but he would have been out by a mile if the throw went to 2nd). And it wasnt only stolen bases, it felt like they were tagging up on everything.

I saw entire thames at bat, and i knew immediately it was bad when he threw his bat. it wasn’t a very smart idea and this one is gonna hurt. Randy winn looks like garbage, and he swings at the 1st pitch way too many times. I wouldn’t complain if he actually got hits instead of weak fly outs

And now onto the captain. The guy needs some time off, and by some i mean at minimum like 3-4 games. He looks like complete garbage both at the plate and on the field…and his range to his left is disgusting. I forgot who got the “hit” but it was about a foot to his left from where he was positioned and he couldn’t even get a glove on the ball.
The crowd was going nuts when Jeter came up to bat with the bases loaded..i kept my expectations low considering how terrible he looked the first 2 plate appearances and he STILL managed to disappoint me.
3-1 and he hits a weak grounder to short? I never heard so many ugh’s and “Jeter sucks” at a game in my entire life.

    Well there is my rant.

  • Cecala

Man this just stinks, so many catching prospects and none are ready for big league play. The only thing separating us from the Mets is that we actually can win.

  • http://conservationvalue.blogspot.com/ Jon G

What’s the status of Colin Curtis?

    Jorge Vasquez?

Those would seem to be two intriguing bats for DH and OF, but guess what — they are injured too! Anyone know how soon they’ll be back and could possible contribute..?

Who else do you give the call to at AAA?

    • ShuutoHeat (Gardy = Thunder&Lightning)

Curtis is on the DL, if he wasn’t I would be thrilled to see him.

  • mike c

i do feel pretty good about velli behind the plate… i would like to see another power bat in the lineup though– at this point cutting their losses and paying dye probably isn’t a bad move, plus it would give us another bat off the bench for the postseason

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUvg7Empjfg Captain Jack

Am I the only one that’s worried about this team losing the battle of attrition? I mean if the Rays weren’t awesome I’d be fine…but lets face it. Hughes isn’t going to maintain a 2.25 ERA all season (the other shoe will drop soon), Cano already cooled, Cervelli won’t hit .700 with runners in scoring position all season, and now Thames is out for a bit. I keep thinking that Brett Gardner won’t be this good…Jeter, Teixeira, and Alex all need to get hot. Also, Javier Vazquez pitching like he did against Detroit for a five or six weeks should help tide them over. Ugh…I mean honestly, if someone told you that this team would lose: Curtis Granderson for two months, Jorge Posada for one month (four weeks approx one month), Nick Johnson for two or three months, Nick Swisher for about a month, and Javier Vazquez would have an ERA of eight by mid May…then they would tell you that the spirit of Walter Johnson got into the entire Rays pitching staff and Evan Longoria would hit his ceiling this year; would you honestly think that this team wins the East at the end of the season?

Now I’m not saying it can’t happen…say after the ASB this team comes back full strength (minus Johnson, he’s the only one I’m really worried about) they have the fire power if all of them get hot at the right time…I just think it’ll take another addition for them to win the AL East this year.

    • http://twitter.com/rebexarama bexarama

I know what you’re saying and the Rays are really really really good but you can’t think everything that’s gone wrong with the Yankees will continue to go wrong with them, while everything that’s gone right for them will begin to go terribly (IE your comment about Hughes). The Rays’ pitching is very good and will continue to be so, but most of them are notably outperforming their FIP. Guys like Hughes and Andy will certainly regress, but so will the Rays’ pitching.

Also it’s been like a week for Swisher, who PLEASE GOD GET BACK SOON and I think Granderson is going to be a month. On the other hand, I’d be pretty surprised if NJ is able to contribute in any way.

      • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUvg7Empjfg Captain Jack

Well if you read this part:

Now I’m not saying it can’t happen…say after the ASB this team comes back full strength (minus Johnson, he’s the only one I’m really worried about) they have the fire power if all of them get hot at the right time

That’s more to say that if there’s no complications, so if everything goes right with what’s gone wrong (that’s a fun little saying that I never thought I’d get to say). The comment about Hughes, Gardner, and Cervelli was more just saying…that yes through all the adversity they have played fairly well, but a lot of that is unsustainable.

You mention the Rays, well Jason Bartlett won’t hit .242 all season, Carlos Pena will start to mash again, Ben Zobrist will probably get some of his power back, Desmond Jennings will replace BJ Upton soon enough, and they have to replace Dioneer Navarro (I sure hope they take their sweet time though). So while their team ERA is about a run ahead of their xFIP they still have a lot of the good (for them) regression left.

As to the Yankees, Swisher needs to return soon…once they get him and Granderson back the line up (and the defense) will be quite a bit better. As soon as Jeter rediscovers the strikezone, that will help quite a bit too. However, they all need to make full recoveries…and some things have to go right with Jeter and Gardner.

btw: i.e. isn’t usually capitalized as it stands for “id est”

Just being a dick since they lost. ;)

        http://ancienthistory.about.co.....ievseg.htm

        • http://twitter.com/rebexarama bexarama

Yeah, I don’t know why I took your comment in such a negative way. Tired and cranky about the Posada injury and I thought you were exaggerating a lot of the time the players would be out, I suppose. I think we can definitely agree that there’s a lot of regression to the mean that’ll happen for both teams, and that the Yankees can be very very good when fully healthy. July and August should be fun.

And thanks for the i.e. thing, I actually do appreciate it ;)

          • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUvg7Empjfg Captain Jack

Well the thing is Swisher might be out a couple of weeks…two maybe three, if it’s the high end that’s about a month. Other than that everything seems about right. I mentioned in the wrap up thread, a couple of good relievers would go quite a long ways in helping this team, that’d be about three games in the past five days where they’d either win or have a solid chance…if the team thinks NJ is done for most of the year, maybe acquiring another outfielder and having four good outfielders to rotate between the OF and the DH spot. Hopefully Boston tanks and the fan base runs JD Drew out of town…he’d be a perfect fit, he can play the corners, he’s injury prone so he needs to DH regularly anyways. He’s signed next year so maybe they’d have to figure out a way to get everyone PAs next year, but as we’ve seen this year, as Marlo Stanfield would say “Sounds like on of them good problems.” That has like a negative chance of happening though, so I dunno why I’m getting my hopes up…but still.

As to Tampa, I just hope that by the team this team finally gets everyone back that they might be too far back to do anything.

The hits just keep coming. I was going to say, “What’s next _____ is going to break his arm?” but I won’t even say the name lest I jinx the team…
