Nick Swisher wins Final Vote
ByVia Jack Curry, Nick Swisher narrowly beat out Kevin Youkilis for the final roster spot on the AL All Star Team. Curry says it was the closest vote ever, so go and pat yourselves on the back for all votes you cast. Congrats to Swish, great to see the Yankees well represented.

I’m both happy and sad at the same time. Swish deserved it, but so did Captain Caveman.
Hopefully David Ortiz will pull a hamstring in the next few days while searching for the real killers and Youkilis can get to go to Anaheim as well.
Captain Caveman did deserve it more than Swish, true. But the all-star game is at least as much a popularity contest as it is a reward for a job well done. And well, Captain Caveman, doesn’t have quite as many fans as Swish. So, Swish got sent.
I personally don’t feel as bad as I could about this because Swish did had an awesome first-half. Not quite as awesome as Youk, but awesome nonetheless. Its not an embarrasment that Swish is going to be an All-Star. I certainly will be much happier to see Swishes smiling mug than Youk’s scowling one.

Oh, I’m not embarrassed at all, I just like seeing justice served, and both Swish and Ol’ Dead Squirrel Beard deserve to be in Anaheim.
Big Sloppy, however… no.
I did notice that when YES showed the final vote candidate breakdown that it did seem to cause Youkilis major discomfort as he “smiled.”

I’m almost disappointed. I wanted to see Girardi stick Youkilis in LF for all 9 innings of the game.

Swish has him beat in wOBA (.389 to .378), wRC+ (57.5 to 48.5), and WAR (2.5 to 2.3). Gardner’s been the bomb, but he’s not more deserving that Swishahouse.

Swisher is thrilled to be a Yank, gives his all and had a great first half. He deserved our support just as we expect his best on the field. Its a perfect compliment to player and fan.
He will remember the fan support forever.

I’m happy for Swish. He seemed like he wanted it more than Youk.
Youk’s been an All Star four times and was honest on WEEI yesterday about not being the type of player who would campaign for something like that. I find that refreshing in today’s world of “look at me!” athletes. Swisher is having a nice season and I’m sure he will have a blast in Anaheim. Youkilis will get some much needed rest. Looks like a win-win to me.
