Open Thread: Textbook

Our regular game recap is coming later tonight at its usual time (midnight ET, all season long), but there’s one thing I want to briefly muse about here: I thought today’s win was pretty textbook. It wasn’t perfect, but that’s pretty much you draw it up with this team. The power hitters hit homers, CC Sabathia gave them six good (but not great, not today) innings, and then the bullpen from hell closed things out flawlessly. They scored early and tacked on late when they had too; it was just a solid win on Opening Day. I’ll take 161 more just like it.

Anyways, here is your open thread for the night. The Giants and Dodgers (Lincecum vs. Kershaw) will be on ESPN, plus the Rangers and Isles are facing off. Talk about whatever, enjoy.

Ryan Franklin sucks, Cards/Pads heading to extras.

  2. Dela G says:

man today was such a great day to watch the yanks (minus the weather)

    Here’s to 161 more wins!!! [/delusional

  3. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Twas a good win indeed. I’m very much looking forward to the recap — complete with win probabilities, charts, and all that other hooplah. Nice to have baseball back.

  4. After today’s game, I now dislike Will Rhymes.

    Why? Well…

    -His name is dumb.
    -He almost twisted Gardner’s ankle.
    -He argued strikes twice.

  5. Accent Shallow says:

Anyone still miss Jackson and Coke?

    • radnom says:

I don’t understand the desire everyone around here seems to have for these players to perform poorly just to stick it to the people who complained about the trade.

Don’t you want former highly regarded Yankee prospects like AJax to flurish? Its only good for the farm’s reputation. Plus Coke performed well here are times. I wish him nothing but success.

Also, I think half the people here making fun of Jackson every time he strikes out would be the same people make excuses for him if he were the Yankees CF today instead of Granderson.

      • Accent Shallow says:

I’m not rooting for them to fail.

I just think that “they’re useful players” turned into “they’re studs who the Yankees are going to miss terribly” at some point, which (IMHO) is not close to true.

I’m very interested to watch Jackson’s development, since he’s an odd duck — a high K hitter with good BA, but little power. I think he’ll be a useful player for awhile, but it could go either way — it wouldn’t surprise me to see his BABIP come back to earth this year, and him to hit .270/.320/.380, or for him to take a step forward, add BB, cut the K, and add a little power.

Coke, though, I see as a fungible LOOGY, and I hope to see him point to plenty of HRs and doubles in the gap by Yankee batters, so fans of other teams get to experience what we did.

        • radnom says:

I just think that “they’re useful players”

Thats not bad, but a lot of people wildly overreact to the ‘they are studs’ people and go equally wrong in the opposite direction.

Plus it just seems meanspirited to revel in their failure, not that I’m accusing you of that personally.

          • Big Apple says:

its an interesting topic…i don’t see a lot of yankee fans feeling this way about those that leave, regardless of the situation. hell, i root for Pavano to do well b/c it shows the guy can pitch and cash wasn’t an idiot for signing him. i hope javy wins 20 this year.

the red sox fans exhibit this behavior all the time. right now they are cheering the news of Bay going to the DL. they are a sick, twisted bunch.

        • NC Saint says:

To be fair, unless you’re already considered a lock for goodness and a decent bet for greatness, ending up as the lead-off hitter for a major league team is a pretty good outcome for a prospect. I’m not knocking the trade, but (reasonable) Jackson bulls have been largely vindicated.

      • smurfy says:

I am a vampire for defense, and Ajax’ reputed catches and glide had me envious, as well as wistful. Until today! Hail Curtis of centerfield!

  6. cano is the bro says:

Grandy was awesome today, just highlights after highlights. Teix’s HR was encouraging and so was Arod’s performance. The bullpen was absolutely filthy and as much as i hate that soriano contract/ giving up our 1st rounder, I’m going to love seeing him shut down batters in the late innings.

Also that Red’s win was ridiculous. Oh and Pujols has GIDP 3 times today

  7. nick swishah is a stahting pitchah says:

Great game by Willy Mays errrrrrr I mean Curtis Granderson

  8. mike c says:

good for tex to make sure he got a blast in before april 1st… also, the three headed beast of joba/so/mo is going to be a huge lifesaver this year. “we believe in 6 inning games”

  9. fire levine says:

can someone explain who TSJC and why is everybody so excited to have him back. basically who is he, where was he, why did he leave, and why did he come back?

    • Smart/funny commenter who used to be a regular then he went and had a son so he hasn’t been around at all lately. Dude’s got his priorities ALL mixed up.

      • OldYanksFan says:

Really… when I had my daughter, she was the love of my life. But once she turned 12, I regretted all the Yankees games I missed!

    • Tom Zig says:

He’s been a regular commenter for a long time. He and his wife had a kid, he understandably had to take time away from being here every day. I guess he felt opening day was the best time to come back.

    • fire levine says:

thanx guys. i’ve been reading RAB for a while but only started reading the comments section this offseason. RAB commenters have restored my faith in blogs and thanx for that

  10. bexarama says:

I was at the game and I had a freaking amazing time. Curtis Granderson comes out to “Friday.” Justin Verlander had awfully tight pants. Apparently all the other games were nuts too.

    I love baseball. :D

  11. Drew says:

anybody else want to get on Arod for not running out of the box on the double? Its my only gripe from the game

    • Jerome S. says:

      More importantly,

      A-Rod hit a double.

      He’ll never catch a break…

    • JerseyDutch says:

Yes, he probably should have run it out but you can’t really blame him for thinking that one was going out. As long as doesn’t make a habit of it. (Hitting doubles, I mean. More homers.)

    • steve (different one) says:

Was listening in the car and Sterling definitely went into the “it is HIGH it is FAR….” so Alex probably thought he got all of it.

Then again, Sterling does that on an infield fly sometimes…

  12. Jimmy says:

TommieSmithJohnCarlos….. or something like that. Used to post here about 500-600 times a day. Always seemed like a pretty smart/reasonable baseball poster. Apparently incarcerated sometime in the past six months.

  13. Will says:

Out of curiosity, why midnight for the recaps? Is that some rule with MLB where only authorized outlets can publish recountings of the games the same day they’re played?

  14. cano is the bro says:

    Kershaw is looking really good

  15. ultimate913 says:

Oh. That’s right. It’s nice to have you back, TSJC. I look forward to your future brilliant comments.

P.S: It’s best you stay away from watching the Knicks for now. It gets really depressing sometimes.

  16. NC Saint says:

    Yeah, that was beautiful.

But it just ain’t a full day of baseball season without DotF. Hurry up and start playing in games, you lazy prospects!

  17. Jimmy McNulty says:

Pretty good start to the season. Good close games, scored six runs in game that was started by one of the best. I’ll take it.

  18. Mike Axisa says:

    Kershaw’s looking prittay, prittay nasty.

  19. aRX says:

Out of curiosity, have you guys decided which prospect you’ll be tracking? Brackman(even tho that year sucked)/Montero is a tough act to follow.

  20. Craig says:

Who do you think will most likely be a Yankee someday? Verlander, Felix, or Hamels? And if so, how?

  21. mike says:

was at the Tundra today – couldn’t be happier.

Arod is an absolute monster, and the pen was great as well. IMO this lineup will be even better than advertised.

Funny that we saw the whole Soriano today – great control, a strikeout, and a mosnter flyball which may have been a homer in the summer/elsewhere. His antics/practices on the mound were interesting as well.

Not sure why Gardy sacrifice bunted, or why Jeter didnt steal 2B following Martin, or even why Verlander was still in the game after 105 pitches (although he was still throwing gas) on opening day, but such is the beauty of the game :)

    • bexarama says:

I know Soriano’s a flyball pitcher but you know who else did that? Mariano. It’s possible he and Mo were pitching kind of differently because everyone knew the weather would help to keep the ball in the park. Also, I didn’t notice any antics on the mound.

Yeah, his contract sucks. Can we stop trying to hate Soriano now, though? He’s on the team. If he pitches with yesterday’s results he can rip all his clothes off on the mound when he’s done for all I care.

  22. 28 this year says:

    anyone see fangraphs org rankings?

I found it funny how last year’s subjective rankings had Boston in front and this year, with slightly more objective rankings had the Yankees in front even though I would say this team (which I do think is better than Boston) has more question marks going into the season than last year.

  23. China Joe says:

I know I’m getting ahead of myself, but today was a textbook example of why the Yankees will be an extremely tough out if they can just make it to the playoffs. Verlander was flat-out nasty, but the Yankees is just unmercifully patient…they wore him down, clawed their way on base and hit the well-timed long ball. They can hang with any starter and get into the bullpen, and their bullpen is flat-out better than any other team (barring injuries).

Now, I’m not saying they WILL make the playoffs with all the questions in the rotation, but the Yankees are pretty well built for playoff baseball.

  24. Stratman9652 says:

So Broxton appears to still be broken.

  25. Mister Delaware says:

Rangers game sucked ass tonight. I imagine the only thing worse than watching it live was cooking dinner at 7:30, watching mutual television until your wife went to bed, throwing on your jersey so you look like an 11 year old, starting the game at 9:30 and then watching them shit all over themselves.

  26. Nuke LaDoosh says:

Thanks for the entertaining reading today. Mostly stayed in tune to this afternoon’s game by reading game time comments from my computer at work…did manage to watch 40-50 pitches on ESPN in the conference room TV.

  27. Phishin' says:

Had dinner last night at Fresco on E.52 and was sitting at the bar awaiting my company, and Tim McCarver walks in 2 minutes later and sits next to me. I tried to politely talk alittle baseball with him,.and he was as smug, arrogant, and ” deuschy” as he is on tv.
