Yanks call up Peña, DFA Kevin Russo, claim RHP Jess Todd
ByThe Yanks made a few minor moves this afternoon as they have officially called up Ramiro Peña to replace the injured Eric Chavez on the roster. They have also designated Kevin Russo for assignment and picked up right-handed reliever Jess Todd off of waivers from the Indians. Russo, 26 and an off-season trade candidate, was hitting just .230/.306/.300 at AAA and had been taking up precious space on the team’s 40-man. The move to pick up Todd though is a strange one. Todd, once the St. Louis Cardinals’ minor league pitcher of the year, was a second round pick back in 2007, but despite minor league success, he has allowed 24 earned runs in 28.1 Major League innings. Still, he has posted over a strike out per inning and is only 25.

I like the move. Throws strikes with solid command and generates K’s. Could be a younger, cheaper Gaudin (lefties kill him), maybe even Robertson with good coaching under Rothschild to work on that changeup and reduce the platoon split.
In any estimation, though, he’s eminently more valuable than Kevin Russo.
I like Todd as a spare reliever, but it seems odd that they cut Russo when they need the IF depth. Luis Ayala’s almost done with his rehab, just dump Carlyle for Todd. Hopefully Russo clears waivers.

Picking up Todd is strange as in he’s not a guy you expect to pick up off the scrap heap right? Seems like there’s some upside there.
Everyone else thought Jess was a girl. Cashman has an eagle eye for detail.
Why not just 60-day DL Hughes to clear the 40-man spot? Am I missing something?
Yankees have soured on Russo? Concluded after no one traded for him in ST he’d clear waivers?
