Bernie Williams to make first Old Timers’ Day appearance
ByVia Peter Botte, Bernie Williams will make his first Old Timers’ Day appearance this year on June 26th. Bernie’s been back to the Stadium a few times since unofficially retiring, specifically the final game at the Old Stadium, but this will be his first as an Old Timer. It’s always fun whenever former great makes his first appearance at the event, so I’m excited. Bernie was probably my favorite player during the dynasty years.

In a related story, all the pitchers scheduled to attend Old Timers’ Day have called the Yankees and told the club they won’t be attending anymore.
Nobody wants to cross Feared Williams.
also for the first time jeter and posada are playing in the old timers game
I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and assumed you intentionally misspelled “joke” for added humor value.
when is old timers day?
Forget Carlos Beltran, let’s resign Bernie. He’ll get all those clutch hits we’ve been missing when Johnny and Hideki left.
Williams was my favorite player for a while. Then it was Alfonso (back when I was a kid batting average was the shit). After that it was Matsui. I bet Matsui will be a future Old Timer but will Alfonso?
I was born in 1991 by the way, to give you guys perspective as to why I liked batting average, ERA, win-loss records, etc; just six years ago…
I was born in 1791. My favorite Yankees have included John Quincy Adams, Aaron Burr, and George Mifflin Dallas.
I was always partial to Yankee generals Winfield Scott Hancock and Ulysses S. Grant.
But then Hancock did stupid things after the war.
Useless S. Grant, that corrupt Unitarian lout? I’ll be dead in the cold, cold ground before I recognize the presidency of that Ohioan.
Ah, good times.
Then again, I heard someone say yesterday that the 3/5 Compromise was meant to help free slaves, so…
You’ve been talking with Sarah Palin again?
Nope, her buddy Glenn Beck.
And he was saying this in a segment where he was railing against how grade school and high school students don’t know American History.
I weep for the future.
She’s not part of our future, don’t worry about it.
I hope Andy is there. Mussina came back the year after he retired so I don’t see why Andy shouldn’t be there.
So Lou Piniella and now Bernie have been announced to make their first appearances. That’s cool. Did I also hear previously Torre will be there?
It would be nice for Andy Pettitte to be there.
Has Scott Brosius ever come back? He’ll always be appreciated by the Yankee faithful, but I can’t remember if he’s ever been there.
Oh, and it would be nice for Tony Kubek to come back, but I know that’s not happening.
Brosius was in the 2007 Old Timer’s Game.
Brosius also threw out the first pitch in Game 6 of the 2009 ALCS
joe torre will be there, right? Pinella, first time as well.
Will Bernie be retiring before playing in the game?
Actually kind of a fun point… Will Bernie be the first non-retired player to play in the Old Timers’ Game?
(Did he officially retire this year? I thought he said at some point he was going to get around to it.)
Or do most players not officially retire? (Since they just kind of fade away and teams don’t want them anymore, so it’s not like they have to officially retire in order to end their careers?)
There is paperwork involved.
?
I’m aware there’s paperwork involved. I’m asking if maybe some players don’t bother with the paperwork because they’re just out of baseball and don’t need to file anything to let the world know they’re done.
I suppose they have to, to get their pension, though. I guess that’s the answer.
But yes, there’s paperwork involved… Thanks(?)
I think Bernie officially retired at Andy’s retirement, IIRC.
Andy didn’t retire. It was all just a dream, a bad dream.
BERN BABY BERN! My all-time fave!
Give Mr. Zero my best. I’d like to be there, but I seem to be detained for the next 43 years or so.
