Granderson, infield lead early All-Star Game voting

By

MLB released the early results of the AL All-Star voting today, and Yankees claim the top spots in six of nine positions. The entire infield – Mark Teixeira, Robinson Cano, Derek Jeter, and Alex Rodriguez – lead at their respective positions, as does Russell Martin behind the plate. Curtis Granderson is second behind Jose Bautista in the outfield voting, which is enough to earn a starting spot. These aren’t small leads, either, we’re talking hundreds of thousands of votes between first and second place at most spots. Cano has more than twice the votes as the runner-up at second. You know what the cool thing is? Aside from Jeter, you can at least make a case that all those guys deserve to start.

I’d lol if Colon made it and Cliff Lee didn’t

  2. Jimmy says:

A-Gon has to start over Tex sorry :(

  3. bonestock94 says:

I voted for Tex, Cano,Grandy, Martin, and ARod. Tex and Arod haven’t been the best in their positions but it certainly wasn’t a stretch.

  4. Cuso says:

Yea, I voted for Cano, Grandy and Martin, but gave the nod to A-Gon & Beltre.

For some reason I felt that I had to be “balanced.”

  5. nick says:

I voted arod, cano, tex, grandy, martin. Then I had asdrubal, bautista and jones with matsui as dh.

I’m so excited for Curtis. He seems like such a great guy. Starting CF in the All-Star game should be a nice little feather in his cap.

Personally, I see the potential for great things for Curtis. He plays arguably the most marquis positions in all of baseball (CF for the Yanks) and is in the middle of his prime.

With his gregarious personality and strong desire to help others off the field, he really has the potential to become a huge star — and use that platform to do a lot of good for those people and causes he cares about the most.

I’m glad that he is a Yankee.

Just as an FYI, never has one team’s entire starting infield (not including catcher) started an All-Star Game. There have been several occurrences of 3 out of 4 positions, but never all 4.

  8. Drew says:

When I saw Jeter leading for the AL I LOL’d. I mean I’d much rather see Jeter in there instead of Asdrubal Cabrera, but come on.

  9. Scout Finch says:

Good. The whole infield and Granderson deserve to start so let’s keep us in the lead. And CC should be the starting pitcher, Robertson a set up guy, and Mariano the closer. Jeter’s gonna win the voting for starting SS no matter what so let’s keep voting for the other guys.

    • pete says:

i dunno…Kendrick has been unreal and Alexei Ramirez deserves a start, I think.

      • Scout Finch says:

Then they can serve as backups. The fans want to see an infield of Yankees start the game so they deserve to be there. Jeter shouldn’t make it at all but there’s no stopping that, he’s going to win anyway.

    • Rainbow Connection says:

“CC should be the starting pitcher”

      LOL

  10. All these jerkfaces are overrated.

    Sincerely,
    Jealous-ass MLB players

  11. pete says:

  12. Angryankee says:

Is it me or does Colby Lewis look like Will Ferrell?

  13. josh says:

Fair and balanced is crap when it comes to all star votes. The Yankees are your favorite team? Then vote for friggin Yankees players! How many Sox fans out there you think are voting for Tex at 1st????!!!!

    • OldYanksFan says:

REally? You think we should behave like Red Sox fans? Should we drink to excess and act stupid all the time too?

  14. Angryankee says:

Shouldn’t we vote for the worst NL players if we really have our teams best interest at heart?

  15. vinny-b says:

Colon needs to make the All-Star team.

Colon, Granderson, and Batistia (to appease the anti-homers) have been the stories of the year, this year.

  16. Angryankee says:

    What about Cleveland?

  17. El Anonimo says:

A-Gon, A. Cabrera, A. Avila, and M. Joyce should be starting. Jeter should not be on top and neither should J. Hamilton.

love the blog guys…first time posting…

Why all the hating on DJ leading off in all the threads and articles? I watch a lot of the games, and more times than not I see Jeter leading off the game with getting on base…I did some research (not on the stat insider community, but I can use google with the best of them…and google never lies :-)

But I found a few articles…this one below…where it talks about Jeter leading off innings with a very high OBP…it is 3 weeks old, but the trend has been upward I believe in the past 3 weeks…
    http://espn.go.com/blog/new-yo.....l-that-bad

Also, I saw a post on ESPN that Jeter is leading off games with an OBP of over .500…22 of 43 times:
    http://www.forums.mlb.com/n/pf.....tid=472444

Seems that when he bats with no one on base, he is at his best this season…I know that you’d like your number 1 batter to have your highest OBP…but it’s typically not someone with lots of power…so that just leaves Gardner on the team to bat number 1…he is only 5 points better in OBP…and when he was batting first he was more of a mess than Jeter ever was this season…so it might not be wise to mess with where he is at now…batting 9th last year and now this year, he did very well…maybe the lack of pressure makes him better… I bet if you ran the stats, the person leading off bats more times with no one on base than anyone else…and I’d like to see Jeter’s OBP with no one on compared to the rest of the team. Lead-off might be his perfect spot on this particular team…

He also seems to be getting more comfortable as the season progresses…hopefully he’ll trend back upward as he finds back that double stroke and opposite field single he is so great at…

As far as All-Star game votes…you have to realize just like voting for class president in high school and all the way up to the president of america…anything involving the general public and voting is usually just a popularity contest and not necessarily who’s best for the job…so it’s totally understandable that the most popular player in baseball on the most popular team is going to rob a lot of the votes…even if he isn’t the best…BUT to DJ’s credit, he’s not bad…leading off games with OBP of over .500 and trending toward a better defensive year than last year when he won a gold glove (per the first article that I linked)…you could see why people would vote in Jeter as a starter…and let him bat lead-off in the all-star game and get a lead-off infield single in his 1 at bat… :-)

Just thought that the DJ hate should be put in perspective…he’s not the best, but also, not so bad that he doesn’t deserve the votes that he gets…

    sorry so long…go yankees!
