Joba to the DL with strained elbow flexor
ByJoba Chamberlain landed on the DL with a strained flexor muscle in his right elbow, the club announced a few minutes ago. The Yanks’ set-up man had been feeling soreness for weeks, according to manager Joe Girardi, and will miss at least three weeks. Joba himself doesn’t believe the injury is too serious, but he won’t throw for at least ten days. I’d be surprised if he’s back before the end of June.
In the meantime, Amaury Sanit will take his place on the roster, but that’s probably temporary. The Yanks need some late-inning depth, and this injury is clearly a big blow for the Yanks’ endgame plans as they now have three key relievers on the shelf. David Robertson will slide into the set-up role while Luis Ayala and Boone Logan will be called upon to get outs in higher leverage situations. Hold onto you hats, folks.
In other injury news, Russell Martin‘s back “locked up” on him last night, Girardi says. With Jorge Posada away from the club due to another surgery for his son, the Yanks’ bench tonight will consist of Chris Dickerson and Andruw Jones. Confirming what we knew already, Jeff Marquez will be activated for the bullpen, and Hector Noesi has been sent down.

No arm flexor please.
oh god no
besides Drob and Mo the pen is:
Pendleton
Boone
Sanit
Ayala
Marquez
doomed.
I’m not in panic mode, but that is hella ugly.
Sigh I can’t believe you had to defend yourself by saying something that is actually serious. Not your fault of course.
Noooooooooooooooooo
Uh oh
I wonder who’s the first top tiered pitching prospect we have that’s gonna get fucked.
Woooooooo! More great development from the fucking Yankees!
Way to keep those kids rocking!
What. A. Joke.
Billy Mumphrey?
I miss the little fella…
Because other teams’ pitchers don’t get hurt…
Fucking moron.
There’s No Such Thing As a Pitching Prospect.
http://www.northjersey.com/spo.....Mejia.html
http://fullcount.weei.com/spor.....wa-injury/
That’s two that pop into my head without too much thought.
Add to that Josh Johnson, Anibel Sanchez, Madison Bumgarner, and just about every other pitcher.
Exactly. The human arm ain’t supposed to do that.
TNSTAPP applies to pitching prospects. Joba isn’t a prospect anymore.
Not that I disagree in spirit with you.
Give him a break he’s probably just upset
Did you see the last thread?
We’re all upset. James was a raving asshat who blind-linked to octogenarian porn as an argument strategy.
Big difference.
Hmmmmm I see
I don’t know…
Nonagenarian porn might have crossed the line, but if it was just octogenarian porn then maybe it was ok.
I may have exaggerated, those old fogeys were probably sexagenarians at best.
i thought you got banned
Not sure if you’re serious, but what team would still have a lockdown bullpen when three of their most important relievers are on the DL (technically four: Feliciano, Marte, Joba, Sori but Marte wasn’t expected to pitch). They still have a decent bullpen with Mo and DRob at the back.
Time to call up Kevin Whelan
yup, should be Whelan time, give Norton the closer job now that he’s at SWB.
This is just code for “we are planning on having him stretch out his arm in his rehab games.”
Heh, we wish.
I know.
My head would explode
GET STAFFORD SIGNED AND UP HERE IMMEDIATELY!
#kidding
Are you telling me Dante Bichette Jr. can’t pitch?!?!
He can hit 93 from a mound and 96 from the outfield.
/real fact’d
When it rains it pours.
It’s pouring piss! Piss, I tell you!
This just in, Kim Kardashian and R. Kelly are now buying Yankee season tickets like hot cakes!
Can Jesus Montero pitch?
On the bright side, tex is ok and will play. aj just has to go 7 strong tonight, considering his track record with the yanks against the sox, that’s almost guaranteed, right?
Just a ploy so they can send him to the minors so he can be streached out to be a starter?
/nevergiveuphope’d
lol you’ll see alot of that as the night goes on
Well, its looks bleak in Mudville today. I can’t imagine going into battle with a relief corp of Robertson and Mo with the likes of the remainder of the pen forces. But its only baseball. Many of our young guys have gone into battle with the odds against them and performed heroically. So I guess the likes of Logan, Ayala, Marquez and Sanit is what it is.
Wow, who’s getting hurt tonight if you get my drift.
um… where’s the panic switch?
Right next to the “JFC, what now?” button.
Oy. No backup C tonight either? Who do you think the emergency C is? I’m going with Swisher–I bet he’d be game.
Jorge.
Nevermind. Maybe I should read things before I post.
He’s selling hot dogs in the bleachers when not in the field or hitting.
Billy Crystal.
Ron Guidry has signed and on his way to the BX. just needs a bullpen session and is ready.
Montero time? We do need a backup C and he could start at DH tonight.
Eye infection unfortunately.
Ugh, I had completely forgotten
At times like this, I wish MLB had a roster policy similar to the NHL. 30 man roster from which you can choose 25 guys for each game. It’s ridiculous that any team should be completely put behind the 8 ball just because a couple guys are banged up, but not DL worthy, and another guys is off tending to family business.
Of course this happens to every single team at various points of the season. I think it would make for a better product.
Players association wants to give you a hug. Owners, not so much.
a) Noesi was just sent down to get a fresh arm, right?
b) If Joba’s elbow has been sore for weeks, WHY HAS BE BEEN PITCHING??? I mean I’m not an expert on these things, but that seems blatantly stupid.
If Joba’s elbow has been sore for weeks, WHY HAS BE BEEN PITCHING???
Probably because it didn’t feel bad enough that he needed to be shut down, but it started hurting worse recently.
JMHO.
It would appear that the Yankees need to hold a course for all incoming players: Tell Us When Something Hurts
a) Noesi was just sent down to get a fresh arm, right?
Because he tossed 71 pitches over 6 innings yesterday, and Girardi said he wouldn’t have been available for four days anyway.
I think it’s somewhere between the Jason Heyward/Chipper Jones thing and blatantly stupid.
These guys are sore all the time… it’s ultimately up to them to interpret the pain.
wow, Sanit and marquez???LOL Are u freaking kidding me! Kevin Whelan is pitching great, and is no spring chicken, as hes now 27yrs old, probably should see what the converted catcher has to offer, instead of bringing up losers like Sanit! What the Freak are the yanks waiting for? Why do they always bring up the idiots from TRIPLE A? Who cares if u use one of Whelans options? Seriously, bring em up, u freaking tools! Sanit…LOL Marquez…LOLOLOLOL Whos next, texiera???LOL This teams annoying with how they handle prospects, no other team in baseball does more to not reward good play by there prospects, then the yanks… Sanit and marquez are pathetic, there not gonna help, we know that, i can pitch better then those idiots! I’d rather bring up Tim Norton right now, then Sanit!
A calm and reasoned analysis.
Tonight’s victory will be the result of…….
Grit.
The form of the message is a bit of a mess, but I agree with the substance regarding one point… Why are we not seeing Kevin Whelan at this point? He’s been very good at AAA this season, this seems like an obvious opportunity to give him a shot.
I didn’t even bother reading it.
You’re missing out.
For reals, it’s a work of art.
sorry guys, i was just very annoyed when i seen who we were bringing up..lol I follow the farm very closely and i really don’t see the point of having such a deep system finally, just so u can waste opp’s on guys like Sanit and marquez.. We have a ton of solid middle relief pitchers throughout the system, theres worse things then using one of Whelans options.. Also, u still have Pendelton for long relief.. Even George Kontos is a better option..
yeah you were hysterical there but you are absolutely correct. YOu have NOrton and WHelan who are both older guys dying to get a chance here. Marquez? Come on.
Exactly my thoughts. Whither whelan, norton and kontos?? Sanit little more than mopup. Maybe they are shining him up for a trade…
From best bullpen to worst in 3 weeks. Ugh.
Almost like the bullpen is a volatile thing. Nah that can’t be it. Move along Levine.
Actually that might be it. And stop calling me Shirley.
Sorry, but this only shows why Soriano was signed.
HE was signed because Joba’s health makes the Yankees nervous and Robertson walks the world.
Joba to the DL would look a hell of lot less disastrous if Soriano was still pitching.
Instead of taking it that way why not take it in the way that validates the Soriano signing?
You can’t have too many bat missing relievers. Period end of sentence.
Take it what way? I actually agree with you but still hate the contract.
Dude, I despise the contract.
It’s just that this whole “bullpens are volatile” thing is a pointless argument.
I can use the “volatile” argument to say sign every damn reliever available.
And in fact, all of the anti Soriano folks were insisting we did not need late inning relievers.
Well. . . . how’s that whole “don’t need any late inning relievers” thing looking now?
Fact of the matter is this situation confirms why signing Soriano wasn’t a terrible move (though it is a terrible contract).
If Soriano is healthy right now the tone of these comments is more along the lines of “Aww that sux get well soon” As opposed to “OMFG this means Boone logan is going to be pitching to Kevin Youklis tie game in the 7th.”
Martin’s back locked up? What the hell does that mean, I thought that only happened to old people? What a shitfest.
If only we had a catching prospect in AAA who could step in immediately to give Martin some rest.
I agree. Too bad that our big C prospect in AAA is out with an eye infection.
Really need Logan to step up so Joe doesn’t have to use DRob vs Leftys
TRADE MONTERO FOR SORIA!!!
Speaking of…how did KC not jump all over that?
I assume it was never really on the table.
Probably because the offer was never actually on the table, just a rumor of a rumor.
it never happened well according to Stark
“It took about 30 seconds, after the Royals made Soria their ex-closer, for baseball people to resume second-guessing K.C.’s disinterest in even listening to offers to trade him last year. But here’s the deal on one Soria myth that’s out there: The Yankees never “offered” Jesus Montero for Soria at any point. But they were clearly among the teams that dialed Dayton Moore’s number to ask about Soria, both at the 2010 trading deadline and last winter. And would they have been willing to discuss a Montero-for-Soria trade on both occasions? Executives all over the game are convinced they would.”
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/.....BHeadlines
I assume that Moore wasn’t one of those execs who was convinced they’d trade Montero for him then. If he believed they would and didn’t pursue, that seems pretty foolish.
Very well said
Whelan or Kontos should have been called up.
Can’t disagree with you there.
I’d be lying if I said I don’t feel a bit panicked over this.
I guess Sanit was called up to be a long guy, but I still think maybe they should have just brought up Whelan instead.
This is horrible. We now have a bullpen of Mo, D-Rob, a rookie in Pendleton that Girardi refuses to use, a guy that we traded in Marquez and 3 scrub relievers.
a guy that we traded in Marquez
I don’t see how that’s an insult. IPK is “a guy that we traded.”
and 3 scrub relievers.
Ayala has pitched very well, as he has most of his career. He’s not a scrub. Sanit probably is a scrub, but he’s also pitched well recently, and he’s the last man out of the pen in all likelihood anyway. And Logan is a LOOGY. Whatevs.
Actually, Sanit hasn’t pitched since the end of May. When he last pitched (at AAA), he got rocked.
Does anyone even consider Sanit a prospect anymore? Bring up Whelan and dump Sanit from the 40 man.
Does anyone even consider Sanit a prospect anymore?
No one ever did.
I guess we can use an 8 inning effort from AJ tonight. Like a few other commenters I am also confused on who the Yanks call up at times like these. It just seems weird that they would dip into the waiver wire for a call up than their own AAA.
The Tex news is good to hear though maybe he can put a charge into a couple and make this a laugh-er early.
While we always have 2009 as an example of how we can be 1-8 and still finish 9-9 I wouldnt want to do that too often. Come on u Yanks
Dear Starting Pitchers,
Please go deep.
Luv,
CBean
P.S. dear batters, please Ayala-Logan-Sanit-proof this thing.
Yanks should be okay tonight against Wake and CC goes tomorrow. Then it gets interesting…
Call up Venditte and save a roster spot!
How far off was Soriano? June or July?
Hopefully they can find the key to unlock Martin’s back.
AJ will pitch 7 lock down innings with a DRob/Logan 8th and Mo 9th
We jump all over Wakefield early and often.
Back to a 1 game lead by tomorrow.
All is forgiven.
My God, Joba might gain some weight these next 3 weeks.
Scary thought.
This will all work out ok. Character-building time.
OMG! I love character building!
This is tragic news. We now only have a 2 man bullpen. Gonna need AJ and CC to go deep. We also have no bench.
Sooo who’s going to be available?
Crappy BP under Robertson and Mo
is Swish 1Bing? If so, who’s RFing? Dickerson? That’s one fewer bench player.
Ummm the team is starting to look like banged up shit right now. I’ll be honest. That’s how I feel.
Teixera’s playing. I think A-rod is DH, Nunez at 3rd.
Oh, cool.
Crappy BP under Robertson and Mo
Luis Ayala has a 1.47/3.59/3.94 E/F/x. He’s not Mo, but he’s also not crappy.
OK…so I will ask the question since nobody else has. Why wasn’t this dealt with 3 weeks ago when it became a problem. Why wait until today. Great idea…pretend the problem doesn’t exist and it will go away.
I think that all pitchers experience arm soreness fairly commonly, some for an extended period of time. When it really doesn’t go away, then it’s a problem.
Just my guess.
agree with you 100%. Tough way to be effective, but I guess they learn to deal with it. Seems like with Joba’s history and Cashman’s responses when asked if Joba would start again (can’t handle the workload etc.) the brass would take this more seriously than others in the BP.
I think they probably monitored it and pulled him as soon as it seemed like a significant issue. You just have to think they know what they’re doing in that regard, its not like the Yankees encounter an inordinate amount of health issues compared to other teams. At least not in my opinion.
Okay people I have found the solution!!!
Sooo Teixeira is just day to day. Not a big deal.
Now. If Martin is banged up, he can be a man, suck it up, take an aspirin OR call up Montero!! He can catch while Jorge DH or vice versa.
BP wise: sooo I’m thinking put Nova in the pen and put Noesi in the rotation. And call up one of the minor leaguers you guys are always bitching about that they need to come up (haha I don’t follow MiL)
So our bullpen consists of three guys that are converted starters, a lefty and Ayala. Oh lord. AJ, please go deep tonight and get through 7.
Our bullpen has went from:
Mo
Soriano
Feliciano
Joba
Robertson
Logan
Ayala
to
Mo
Robertson
Logan
Ayala
Pendleton(who never pitches for no reason)
Sanit
Jeff Marquez
I’d love to know why we dont call up Kevin Whelen. We’d need a 40 man spot for him? Simple, you dont claim Jeff Marquez.
AJ going 7 strong? Really hope to see him do well. Maybe a rain dance would be a good idea. Game gets re-scheduled to later in the year. Then a CG by CC tomorrow. At least Cleveland’s line-up isn’t as strong and we can limp through for a bit.
or Kanekoa Texiera..lol Why sign these guys if u got Kevin Whelan, and Tim Norton? Tim Nortons the real deal, and hes on his way to triple A, and if not for injurys in the past, would all ready be there… Stop bringing in the Jess Todds, Texieras, Marquez’s, and let some of these guys who u groomed get a shot.. There is a deep enough system to use some of these guys options..
Stop bringing in the Jess Todds, Texieras, Marquez’s, and let some of these guys who u groomed get a shot..
We groomed both Jeff Marquez and Kanekoa Texeira. They’re ex-farmhands we reacquired. They were above Whelan/Norton in the pecking order back in their prior stints as Yankees, and nothing drastic has happend to make that pecking order change.
I’d love to know why we dont call up Kevin Whelen. We’d need a 40 man spot for him? Simple, you dont claim Jeff Marquez.
I like Whelan as well and wouldn’t have been upset if the team just promoted him instead, but take a step back and think about this for a minute:
Jeff Marquez is in all likelihood an upgrade over Kevin Whelan. Yes, Whelan seems to have had a breakthrough this year. Marquez, on the other hand, has probably more natural pitching talent than Whelan and oodles more polish (since he has been pitching far longer). He made it to the majors faster and has a better MiL track record.
And lastly, claiming Marquez lets you have both Marquez AND Whelan in the system. Two options > one option.
Claiming Marquez was not a bad move. If you want to DFA Sanit and promote Whelan, I’ll back you 100%, but I totally get (and endorse) reacquiring a talent like Marquez. There’s a reason he was the 41st overall selection in the draft the year he signed with us.
told you, this season is doomed.
I’m just gonna leave this here…
http://riveraveblues.com/2011/.....uez-49541/
The BP news is disturbing but I have to say I’m more surprised Tex is playing tonight. The way he went off the field last night I thought he’d be out at least this series. And to play 1B as well. Impressive.
The best part is seeing all the HOMER fans who think this teams fine, and dosen’t need to wheel and deal this trade deadline… I mean, we gotta hope guys like Colon, Garcia, Ayala continue to pitch well, we got Nova and Burnett in the rotation, and its hard to say what AJ will give u from start to start, and Nova is still very raw and up and down, and we got a ton of injured relievers who we don’t know when they’ll return and if they will without getting re-injured, and we have a bunch of SLUGGERS in the lineup, but very few hitters, as Jeets and Gardner aren’t really getting the “HITS” we need from them, and cano’s AVG is way down, and our DH is hitting like 180.. If u expect this team to stay in 1st place all yr, and even if they do, actually win the WS with this roster, your wishful thinking.. This yr is a yr more then any, we really have to make a couple deals.. Take a chance on Carlos Zambrano, and get Jason Kubel over here, unless you can pry Hunter Pence from HOUSTON, and if that don’t work, go try and get Kuroda/Blake deal done, for alittle less then what it would cost for a bigger trade piece… We must make a couple deals, or one deal with more then 1player coming back to us…
Aaaaaaaaand this is why you, and many of us, are not working in the Yankees FO.
Panic reactions are not the key to winning, it’s how you become the Mets.
not really.. Cashman supposedly all ready knows this, but its alittle early for trades, because teams don’t quite know if there pretenders or contenders yet.. Its almost a gurantee even if were in first close to the trade deadline, were making a deal or 2.. Cash isn’t silly enough to not realize this first place team, is seriously flawed, or at least flawed enough to not let go all yr without adding a piece or 2.. U have to take the first place standings with a grain of salt, just keep hoping we can stay afloat until we can add a piece or 2…
As of right now the team is fine, but not ready for a WS run. I think almost all people expect the Yankees to make a move for one if not two middle of the rotation starters to take the place of guys like Nova and Garcia. The big x factor at this moment has to be Hughes because if he can come back healthy throwing 93-94 he will definitely be a huge boost to the Yankee club. However, I don’t see the Yankees really wheeling and dealing until July 1st. The early deals such as CC Sabathia are the exception and not the rule.
cashman is trying to be a ninja but we all know that hes trying to trade montero for a starter.
Lets bring up Jesus.
http://riveraveblues.com/2011/.....farm-49859
I was joking.
Gotcha, thanks. So many people keep saying that seriously, your sarcasm got lost in the shuffle. My bad.
Can everyone just calm the fuck down! This is not the “A” list bullpen that we imagined but let’s just hope the starters continue to give us quality starts and Girardi handles what he has the right way!
OH NOES!
*jumps from bridge*
