Game 80: Subway Series

Here’s the starting lineup…

Nick Swisher, RF
Curtis Granderson, CF
Mark Teixeira, 1B
Alex Rodriguez, 3B
Robinson Cano, 2B
Russell Martin, C
Andruw Jones, LF
Eduardo Nunez, SS
Ivan Nova, SP

First pitch is scheduled for shortly after 7pm ET and can be seen on YES locally and MLB Network nationally. Enjoy.

Aside: I’ll be at all three games this weekend, though I got to the park too late today to sit in on Joe Girardi‘s and Brian Cashman‘s pregame press conference. Figures Cashman won’t be here the next two days. Stupid Whitestone Bridge. Anyway, I’ll have pre and postgame notes all weekend long, plus more.

  1. Nuke Ladoosh says:

    Woo hoo

  2. Greg says:

I think sitting Gardner is just for giving him a day off.

  3. Greg says:

Girardi providing help to Nunez by having Nova play shortstop too.

  4. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    “Ivan Nova, SS”

Guess he can get the ball to 1B more than Nunez can.

    • Salty Buggah says:

I like that idea. And if Jeter is playing, Nova can help make up for his lack of range (though his defense actually hasn’t been bad this year.)

  5. Esteban says:

    Should of taken the Triborough

  6. Nuke Ladoosh says:

In NY for the long weekend think I’m going Sunday

  7. It’s been seven years since The Dive play. There’s your daily factoid.

  8. There is nothing exciting about the Subway Series. The Mets haven’t been really good in years, and even when they have, we’ve just embarrassed them.

  9. Xstar7 says:

6 hits for Jose Reyes in this series?

  10. Greg says:

All we have to do is avoid being swept. We’re in their park, they’re playing well, we’re olaying well. Let’s see what happens

  11. Kostas says:

This series was fun the first couple years. Now it has become pointless, like Newman vs. Jerry

    • Rainbow Connection says:

I think it’s kind of exciting just hoping that the Yanks don’t get swept or lose the series. It would be embarrassing.

      • Kostas says:

Embarrassing would be Mets fans NOT doing the wave as has surfaced at Yankee Stadium. #blamerandylevine

    • JobaWockeeZ says:

Yeah let’s cancel that, cancel the Orioles series since that isn’t fun, or the Mariner series, or the Royals series, and the like.

  12. Rainbow Connection says:

What are the implications of the A-Rod story?

  13. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

3 balls hit by the Yankees that would be HRs anywhere else but get swallowed by Citi field

  14. Drew says:

Mike how were you able to get acess to Girardi’s press conference?

  15. Karl Krawfid says:

Didn’t Swish lead off with the Sox and didn’t like it?

    He’s pretty good at it.

  16. Karl Krawfid says:

  17. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

  18. Kostas says:

  19. JobaWockeeZ says:

Kay, the Yankees in like every other game are out of the gate quick.

  20. Greg says:

Bad pitch selection by Niese. Should have gone offspeed.

  21. Ivan says:

Boom, Boom, Boom, Yankees lead 2-0.

  22. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Alex should have bunted.

  23. StanfordBen says:

Turned the game on a little late, I saw Arod batting with 0 outs and a man on 2nd and was like, “Wait, why is Arod batting 2nd?” Then I saw the score. Sweet.

  24. Cy Pettitte says:

Teix is a fucking beast, love it. Please pound the crap out of the Mets and shut up their annoying fans

  25. Nuke Ladoosh says:

I’m in heaven. Gorgeous bartender named Rachel. Hostess who I can’t take my eyes off of. 2-zip.

  26. Karl Krawfid says:

  27. Cy Pettitte says:

    Robbie!!! what a double.

  28. Ivan says:

  29. Xstar7 says:

There you go Robbie, there you go

  30. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Robbie is SO CLUTCH!!

  31. Cy Pettitte says:

  32. Greg says:

    Nunez had no chance

  33. JobaWockeeZ says:

    Fucking useless.

  34. Kostas says:

God that was a horrible throw by Jeter.

  35. nsalem says:

  36. iloveyoubartolo says:

  37. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Nunez that’s awful

  38. first time lawng time says:

Jesus how hard is it to throw the fucking ball if that’s your job?

  39. Greg says:

Nunez wouldnt have gotten him anyway

  40. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Nunez is such a trickster.

  41. Karl Krawfid says:

So I guess the Mets think they are the rangers now?

  42. Cy Pettitte says:

wait, are the Mets doing the claw thing like the Rangers did last year? please tell me no.

    • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Definitely looked like it. LOL METS

    • first time lawng time says:

Some guys on one of those sports radio stations were talking about it yeterday. Apparently, it’s called the “claw”. Pretty stupid if you want my opinion

  43. Nuke Ladoosh says:

    There’s one

  44. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

First pitch strikes are so lame anyway…

  45. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Daniel Murphy hitting 4th…

  46. Kostas says:

4 straight batters that Nova has started off with ball one. Not a good sign

  47. Karl Krawfid says:

    OMG CANO!!! wow!

  48. Jetrer says:

  49. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    That was sick!

  50. Cy Pettitte says:

Robbie!!! oh my god, he is awesome.

  51. Nuke Ladoosh says:

    Phuck yeah

  52. Guns of the Navarone says:

That’s the best way the infield can get outs… don’t let Nunez touch the ball.

  53. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Nice Robbie

  54. Simon says:

    …..show off

  55. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Who would you rather have: a healthy Jose Reyes or Eduardo Nunez

  56. Xstar7 says:

That was a filthy double play by Robinson.

  57. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Nunez needs a different helmet

  58. Cy Pettitte says:

nice bunt, but please get a helmet that fits already.

  59. jay h says:

that’s the kind of bunt we like, right?

  60. JobaWockeeZ says:

    Take notes Gardner.

  61. Xstar7 says:

    Hooray for small ball!

  62. Nuke Ladoosh says:

Nunez makes errors Yankees roll. Reminiscent of ’98 Knoblauch.

  63. Cy Pettitte says:

    2 strike bunt = gritty

  64. JobaWockeeZ says:

Even Ivan frickin nova can do it.

  65. first time lawng time says:

Via E! News: Arod actually did not get mad at Cam for feeding Letterman popcorn. In fact, he thought it was funny. Also, his daughters make fun of him for the Superbowl thing.

  66. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Yay bunts.

  67. Xstar7 says:

That was a hell of an at-bat by Swish.

  68. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Nice, Curtis

  69. Karl Krawfid says:

Swish/Grandy had fat fastballs to hit and took them.

    Need to be more aggressive.

  70. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Oh yeah, Jason Bay still plays baseball…

  71. Greg says:

LOL At Let’s go Yankees!, Let’s go Mets!

  72. Cy Pettitte says:

sometimes you really have to appreciate the Yankees facial hair policy

  73. Greg says:

Prediction: This will be a bullpen game.

  74. Karl Krawfid says:

    Woo another 2 strike hit.

    Can’t stand Nova.

  75. Pat D says:

Nova’s doing his best…to make them drop him back to Scranton.

  76. Cy Pettitte says:

    Nova can’t handle NY

  77. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Nova must miss SWB

  78. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Eesh Nova is awful.

  79. Cy Pettitte says:

at least they limited the damage

  80. Greg says:

Nova pulled an AJ there, limiting the damage

  81. Kostas says:

Going to be a short night for Nova if he doesn’t start throwing strikes

  82. Xstar7 says:

    Nova survives. For now.

  83. Tom O says:

So, is anyone else tired of Mets fans going on and on about how many home runs in Yankee Stadium wouldn’t be home runs in Citi Field? They never seem to thank about how many Yankee Stadium doubles (and even hard singles off the RF wall for a slower guy like Posada!) get turned into triples in the huge RF gap at Citi.

  84. Greg says:

The Mets offense reminds me of the Royals offense from last year. The Royals had a great batting average and had to string hits together to score.

  85. Guns of the Navarone says:

If only Nova could miss a bat. He’d be a hell of a pitcher if his offspeed stuff could develop more.

    • whozat says:

I think that applies to every 4/5 pitcher in baseball.

      • Guns of the Navarone says:

But I think Nova is at the bottom of MLB in terms of strikeouts. He really needs work. Any improvement in that area would be huge for him.

  86. Xstar7 says:

    Lucky ass single for A-Rod

  87. Cy Pettitte says:

    Robbie giveth, Robbie taketh

  88. Greg says:

    Cano has to hustle

  89. Jetrer says:

pussy ARod needs to flatten that guy to stop the dp

  90. Karl Krawfid says:

    Jesus Christ great inning Yanks.

  91. Kostas says:

If you can run a catcher over, ARod should have ran over the second basemen. Was clearly in his path.

C’mon ARod lower that $20 million dollar shoulder and knock him down.

  92. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

I love the fans reactions when cameras run through the concourse

  93. Xstar7 says:

We’re seeing the night and day of Cano.

  94. Cy Pettitte says:

excited about a team that’s 10 games back, played way over their heads for a month and still lost games in the standings? ok.

  95. first time lawng time says:

Do you guys say “Yankees fans” or “Yankee fans”? I say “Yankee fans”. Or “I’m a Yankee fan”. Or, “I’m going to a Yankee game.”

Random, but I noticed Kim say, “Yankees fans” and it made me think of it.

  96. Jerome S. says:

The Yankees should bury the Red Sox while they have the chance.

  97. Cy Pettitte says:

who the Sox even have to trade? I don’t follow their minor league system too closely but from what I’ve read it’s pretty picked through and thin, no?

    • first time lawng time says:

WHAT?! The Red Sox’ minor league system is STACKED! They are full of future all stars and HoFers. Thy are the envy of the Yankees.

      Or so I’ve read.

    • Guns of the Navarone says:

They have a couple arms like Ranuado and Doubront and some average positional players that teams would be interested in should they want to make a trade. Iglesias is their gem and I think they view him as their future SS.

      • whozat says:

He still can’t hit, right? So, he’s cost-controlled Jason Bartlett? I’m not sure that gets you a whole lot on the trade market

  98. Karl Krawfid says:

    No fastball command.

  99. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Marco fucking Scutaro hit a leadoff HR

  100. Karl Krawfid says:

Nice at bat here by Jones.

  101. Mike Axisa says:

  102. V says:

Same pitch has been called for a ball three times for Nova.

  103. Greg says:

They said Jerry Lane was a pitcher’s ump,. We better get that call.

  104. Mike Axisa says:

Someone get the kid a chinstrap already.

  105. Cy Pettitte says:

    Nunie double, helmet off. lol.

  106. Esteban says:

Nunez really needs a helmet that fits better.

  107. Karl Krawfid says:

    Nunez needs a new helmet

  108. Xstar7 says:

    That’s the way Nunie.

  109. Cy Pettitte says:

Nova AB >3 pitches = win.

  110. whozat says:

    Representative AB by Nova :-)

  111. Greg says:

    Nova is battling

  112. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

At least Nova saw some pitches

  113. Jimmy McNulty says:

Meh, good process bad result with Nova.

  114. Karl Krawfid says:

    Should have bunted!

  115. Greg says:

I consider that at bat a success given the circumstances

  116. Esteban says:

Did that curve around the strikezone?

  117. first time lawng time says:

It’s stupid that people complain about YS yielding too many HRs. So what? It benefits the hitters. Large parks, like Citi, benefit the pitchers. Why don’t people complain about that?

  118. Greg says:

Lane called that a ball twice with Nova. He’s pissing me off.

  119. Cy Pettitte says:

how many times are they gonna look at that curve?

  120. Ivan says:

    Fuck, that curveball again.

  121. Greg says:

That first pitch was a strike

  122. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

I love that YES is playing Ace Frehley

  123. Ivan says:

    good trivia question.

The only person that comes to mind is Rickey Henderson.

  124. Cy Pettitte says:

    ARod wow.

  125. Karl Krawfid says:

    Woo A-Rod!!!

  126. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

  127. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Wow nice ARod

  128. Mike Axisa says:

That was a ridiculously good play. Go Alex.

  129. Esteban says:

What a fucking throw. Arod looking nimble out there.

  130. Xstar7 says:

A-Rod doing his best Jeter impression.

  131. Greg says:

A Rod just went prime Jeter

  132. Ivan says:

    Ridiculous play by A-Rod. Sick!!!!

  133. Kostas says:

    What is up with Granderson?

  134. Esteban says:

Arod has such a ridiculous strong arm. I wonder what speed he would get clocked at. You think he can hit 90?

  135. tom says:

And the traditional “on second thought, let’s keep this guy in the game with a 9 pitch inning”.

  136. Simon says:

Where has Alex’s power gone? when was the last time he hit a homerun?

  137. Jimmy McNulty says:

What the hell’s with this “crush a guy in the first inning, then get jack and shit off him later in the game,” bullshit?

  138. Xstar7 says:

The only guy Nova can strikeout is the opposing pitcher. Lol.

  139. Karl Krawfid says:

    2 k’s for Nova.

  140. Esteban says:

Why wouldn’t you throw breaking balls to a pitcher? Why would you try to make it easier on them (as long as you don’t walk them)?

  141. Cy Pettitte says:

seems to be the trend, can’t count the number of guys they hit hard in the 1st/2nd inning and got their pitch count up to 50 or so only to let them go 6 or 7 innings.

  142. Karl Krawfid says:

    Another 2 strike hit.

  143. Xstar7 says:

A-Rod should of dived for that.

  144. Cy Pettitte says:

2 out hits = the worst

  145. Ivan says:

Come on Nova, you was just cruising a minute a go.

  146. Esteban says:

What the hell Justin Turner. He;s stunk lately.

  147. Esteban says:

Nelson Cruz would have gotten the runner.

  148. Guns of the Navarone says:

    This smells like trouble.

  149. first time lawng time says:

And now the strike zone has tightened.

  150. Karl Krawfid says:

    Nova sucks.

  151. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Home plate ump has a much smaller zone for Nova

  152. Mike Axisa says:

All of this with two outs.

  153. Guns of the Navarone says:

Coney droppin the knowledge. That’s all you need to know about Nova.

  154. Mike Axisa says:

    Ooo that bitch was borderline.

  155. Nuke Ladoosh says:

  156. Cy Pettitte says:

    thank god.

  157. Xstar7 says:

    Annnnnnd exhale.

  158. Jimmy McNulty says:

  159. Esteban says:

FUCK YEA NOVA. Getting the K when you need it.

  160. Guns of the Navarone says:

Just earned a little more respect for Nova… He threw some pretty great curveballs in a tight spot there.

  161. Pat D says:

Would you pinch hit for him this inning if his spot comes up?

    • tom says:

If it’s men on base with two outs and no runs yet in, I think you think about it. He’s only got one, two at best innings left in him.

  162. tom says:

They’re going to need alot out of the bullpen tonight — but Nova’s using up his pitches in the fine cause of run prevention.

  163. Ivan says:

    Big out.

  164. iloveyoubartolo says:

    That took five strikes.

  165. Greg says:

    Differencei in the game:
    Yanks: 2/11 RISP
    Mets: 1/7 RISP

    2 is greater than 1

  166. Jimmy McNulty says:

    Let Chevy throw another inning?

  167. Cy Pettitte says:

    moar runs please

  168. Greg says:

    Do we bunt Jones?

  169. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Runs please

  170. Guns of the Navarone says:

I think I love Brian Cashman.

A-Rod: Reyes is the best player on the planet.

Cash: Yeah… No. Not at all. Cano has been the better player over the last few years now.

I’ve loved his honesty all year.

  171. Karl Krawfid says:

Come on Jones. Make it 42 bro. Do it for Jackie/Mo.

  172. Jerome S. says:

So angry at the idea of Jeter leading off.

    So Hulkishly angry.

  173. Kostas says:

    Great Andrew Jones is up

  174. Cy Pettitte says:

    don’t fuck with Canada

  175. Pat D says:

    Get ‘em, Russ!

  176. Xstar7 says:

Nice job breaking up the DP Russ. Now we’re set up for a sac fly.

    Isn’t small ball wonderful?

  177. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    That fooled Kay

  178. Greg says:

    Pinch Hit

  179. Karl Krawfid says:

    Why didn’t we score.

  180. Cy Pettitte says:

    wtf was Robbie doing?

  181. Pat D says:

Terrible baserunning by Cano. Should have been ready to tag.

    • whozat says:

He was ready to tag, that’s why he wasn’t able to score. By the time he and the coach could see what happened, the ball was already on the way to the cutoff man.

      • Jetrer says:

that was probably too shallow to tag. Shallow enough that he probably should have played it halfway in case it fell in.

  182. Jetrer says:

how did the run not score??

  183. Guns of the Navarone says:

Wasn’t Cano on 3rd? Why didn’t he score there?

  184. Ivan says:

If that play fool me, then I can’t blame Cano or the third base coach for that one.

  185. Esteban says:

Andruw Jones smiled all the way to a good baserunning play.

  186. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Send up Jorge instead of BG?

  187. Greg says:

Cano was probably fooled like Kay was.

  188. Hummingbird S. says:

absolutely the right move, good job Joe.

  189. first time lawng time says:

No, Michael Kay, Derek getting to bat leadoff upon his return is not rightful. Gardner is the better hitter, therefore, he should be batting leadoff.

Jeter has done nothing in the past year and a half to earn the right to maintain that leadoff spot.

  190. warren says:

god i really dislike michael kay right now

  191. Cy Pettitte says:

    BG in, finally.

  192. Pat D says:

I get pinch hitting Posada here. Not quite sure why you’d bring Brett in already.

  193. Greg says:

    There’s Gardner

  194. Guns of the Navarone says:

He’ll take a fastball right down the middle all the way.

  195. Xstar7 says:

    Goddammit Jorge!

  196. Cy Pettitte says:

    Nova could have done that.

  197. Pat D says:

    Swing the bat, Jorge.

  198. Esteban says:

Oh well, didn’t work out, but it was probably the right move.

  199. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Fuck that curveball

  200. tom says:

Nova could have done that. Just that way

  201. Hummingbird S. says:

It’s like the Yankees have never seem a curveball from a LHP…

  202. Ivan says:

  203. Greg says:

Guys Niese is a good pitcher. That was the perfect pitch.

  204. Guns of the Navarone says:

    EPIC risp fail.

  205. Ivan says:

And Figures the Yankees do not score, smh.

  206. Cy Pettitte says:

  207. Greg says:

Give credit to Niese there. Made some great pitches.

  208. warren says:

what is girardi doing?! he should have let gardner hit way harder to double up and more likely to get a hit anyway even with posada’s bat hot

  209. Karl Krawfid says:

Great job taking fastballs down the middle Posada/Swish.

  210. first time lawng time says:

This feels like one of those RISPfail/ LOB games. At least they’re winning, though.

  211. Esteban says:

Argle bargle. This game shouldnt be this close.

  212. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    epic fail

  213. tom says:

That didn’t go as well as hoped.

Turned out the ball to Reyes was perfectly placed to keep the Yankees from scoring

  214. Jetrer says:

Cano was lost. Thompson was like WTF are you doing.

  215. Greg says:

Everyone here thinks the Yankee lineup is the greatest of all time. Give credit to the opposing pitchers. Niese is a good pitcher and he made great pitches.

  216. Esteban says:

That’s a tough play for Cano, can’t kill him too much.

    • Guns of the Navarone says:

Totally disagree. Reyes is running out towards the outfield to make the play. Cano should be tagging no matter what. Reyes would have had nothing on the throw even if he had made the catch.

      • Esteban says:

That’s true, but it seemed like his first move was toward home and not to tag up, (which he probably should have done in that situation, but sometimes instincts take over) but once he made the move towards home and got screened, there’s not much he could have done.

        • Guns of the Navarone says:

it seemed like his first move was toward home and not to tag up, (which he probably should have done in that situation, but sometimes instincts take over)

Agreed with that. But the right play would have been to have been tagged up at the base the whole time… once he saw Reyes was going to have to make an over-the-shoulder catch to make the play in the first place.

  217. Guns of the Navarone says:

  218. Tom says:

Kay really sucks. He continually misses things on the field. Perfect example is Cano not scoring there. Not even a mention of it along with the 2 bozos sitting next to him. Its happened numerous times this year especially with mistakes made by the umpires and Girardi is chewing the ump on on a blown call and Kay continues with his head in his ***** without even referencing what is going on the field.

  219. tom says:

Hard to remember the last time we had to watch the lesser part of the bullpen try to hold onto a winnable game. Yankee starters have either sucked wind — a la Gordon’s game — or gone 6-7, for what seems the whole last month.

  220. Cy Pettitte says:

come on Ayala, don’t turn into a pumpkin just yet.

  221. Xstar7 says:

The Yankees are finally getting those outside calls.

  222. Greg says:

THe ump has been bad for both teams

  223. Jetrer says:

    thank Tex for that

  224. first time lawng time says:

Lol what’s wrong with Niese’s nose? It looks like it’s bent at the tip.

  225. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Bud Norris with 8 K’s against the Sox in 4 IP

  226. Xstar7 says:

Will Cory Wade come out for the seventh inning too?

  227. Greg says:

Honestly, this game is right where we want it.

  228. mt says:

    More runs please!

  229. V says:

    Granderslump :-(

That swing looks long to me.

    • Guns of the Navarone says:

I was surprised to read the post here that showed pitchers really haven’t pitched Granderson differently. It really seems to me like pitchers have been offspeeding him to death over the last month plus.

And I’m not just saying that because he just now struck out and saw two curveballs and one split/change in a four pitch AB.

    • Mike Axisa says:

He has a hit today and he’s been on base 11 times in the last five games.

      • V says:

He’s still damn good, and I’m not complaining about that, but his swing looks long, and it has sapped his power and led to more swinging strikes.

        • V says:

I really need to get my pitch f/x database up so I can check splits like SwStr% by subsets of the season. If I could get fangraphs stats with Baseball-Reference’s game log I’d be ecstatic.

  230. Xstar7 says:

    Take some pitches Alex.

  231. Greg says:

Here’s the thing. You cant be patient and agrssive at the same time. You want to make pitchers work, and yet you want batters to swing. You cant have it both ways.

  232. James A says:

I’ve never seen not only fans but also media so split on a free agent (Brad Richards)
I wonder if the Rangers will end up getting him

  233. first time lawng time says:

Jeter should quit the Ford commercials and start endorsing Bosley Hair Restoration.

Guy is balding and it’s obvious.

  234. Ivan says:

Wade just pay attention to the hitters, if Reyes steals so be it.

  235. Crime Dog says:

I doubt anyone wants to see Boone Logan here. A DP ball from Wade would be pretty nice right now

  236. Cy Pettitte says:

  237. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    I assume Reyes is mad…

  238. Ivan says:

What a fucking throw by Nunez.

  239. Kevin G. says:

  240. Guns of the Navarone says:

Trying to be a superstar. Good call though.

  241. Jimmy McNulty says:

    Infield doing WORK

  242. Pat D says:

    Nice job, Cano.

    Great call by the umpire.

  243. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Bad call. Reyes was safe

  244. Crime Dog says:

ARods a cheater because he faked the tag

    /All Mets fans’d

  245. Hummingbird S. says:

what a dumb play.. Jeter would never do that!

  246. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

That DP saved us from Logan vs Beltran

  247. tom says:

Being screened out of a play giveth, and it taketh away.

  248. mt says:

Good acting job by AROD! Cameron has come in handy.

  249. Brandon says:

  250. Pasqua says:

Because the Mets are playing well: Reyes is a hardnosed gamer who’s being aggressive and trying to make things happen.

If the Mets were playing poorly: Reyes is being greedy and hurting his team by making bad baserunning decisions.

And that’s the fine line of professional sports in NY.

    • Guns of the Navarone says:

It’s whatever narrative will sell the most newspapers…or gets the most hits on a website. That’s what they go with.

      • Pasqua says:

Exactly. Reyes’s baserunning will be viewed in a completely different way tomorrow simply because of the way the team has been playing. Last year? I bet he gets skewered for getting thrown out at 3rd.

  251. Guns of the Navarone says:

The throw beat the runner, so he’s automatically out.

  252. Xstar7 says:

I still don’t feel safe with Boone Logan on the mound.

  253. Jetrer says:

Any chance Nunez gets sent down when Jeter comes back and keep Pena as utility guy. Nunez is absolutely fucking awful. At least Pena can play defense.

    • Guns of the Navarone says:

I think the fact that Nunez is playing every day in Jeter’s absence is all the answer you need.

      • Jetrer says:

Pena is more adept to utility role IMO. I would think if the Yankees really think Nunez is a legit prospect, they would want him to play every day and learn how to play defense rather than play twice a month off the bench. And I just can’t fucking stand watching Nunez fuck up anymore.

    • Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

      Pena will be sent down

  254. Kevin G. says:

Kofi Kingston Jose Reyes is mad.

  255. Ivan says:

    come on Logan.

  256. Crime Dog says:

    That was not Boone Logan.

    It was Loone Bogan

  257. Cy Pettitte says:

    The Boonester: surprisingly effective now

  258. Karl Krawfid says:

    Logan baby!

  259. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

  260. Xstar7 says:

These umps are baaaaaaad. But I’ll take it.

  261. bobtaco says:

Has Logan officially turned the corner?

  262. Kevin G. says:

Hopefully the Yankees blow this game out so I don’t have to hear “You wouldn’t have won if the umpire wasn’t on your payroll!!1!11!1″

  263. Adam Parker says:

Nunez is just bad at his job. Lazy ass mofo needs to learn some hustle.

  264. first time lawng time says:

Reyes looks like the type that doesn’t shower regularly.

  265. JobaWockeeZ says:

If I was a Mets fan I would be unbelievably pissed.

  266. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Lol Murphy

  267. Ivan says:

Hahahahaha, Tex makes that play with a blindfold on.

  268. Pasqua says:

    Error on the Amish guy!

  269. Esteban says:

Daniel Murphy, not known for his defensive prowess.

  270. Cy Pettitte says:

can we trade for Bud Norris and make him out designated against Red Sox pitcher

  271. Greg says:

Like that. Tried to use his speed.

  272. Crime Dog says:

I just saw Logan with a helmet on. It was not pretty

  273. Karl Krawfid says:

    At Conedelstick.

    Michael Kay just stop.

  274. Ivan says:

  275. Cy Pettitte says:

    Nunie is clutch

  276. Esteban says:

  277. Mike Axisa says:

    Very nice, Eddie.

  278. Karl Krawfid says:

    4-4 Nunie holla

  279. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Yay Nunie

  280. Greg says:

Nunez cant field but he can hit

  281. Cy Pettitte says:

    homeboy can bunt

  282. Xstar7 says:

NUNEZ IS FEELIN’ IT TONIGHT! D-Rob and Mo greatly appreciate that insurance run.

  283. Crime Dog says:

  284. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Wow Boone

  285. bobtaco says:

Where’s that Nunez fan tonight, his head must have just exploded…

  286. Crime Dog says:

Boonie just bunted over Noonie. My mind is blown

  287. Karl Krawfid says:

  288. Jimmy McNulty says:

Everyone okay with letting Logan bunt? I am, may as well let Swisher get an at bad w/RISP. Not like Peña’s any good either.

  289. Monteroisdinero says:

Nunez with a LIVE bat-so refreshing to see (for a few more days).

  290. Jetrer says:

Hopefully Girardi is saving Pena to replace Nunez in the field. I’m not optimistic about that though.

  291. tom says:

Oh, great — Boone gets to say in the game

  292. V says:

I’m not a major league manager, obviously, but if I were, I would send up the pitcher to ‘sac bunt’, and send Nunez on the first pitch to steal second, telling the pitcher to take no matter what. Stolen base + save an out, then send up a pinch hitter.

  293. Pasqua says:

First pro at-bat for Logan and he puts down a successful sac bunt? No sarcasm or irony intended: Nice job, dude!

  294. Crime Dog says:

I like how Girardi’s trying to give D-Rob a night off here. Give him as much rest as you can down the stretch, just because youre up 2 or 3 runs in the 8th doesn’t mean he needs to be in. I like it

  295. Ivan says:

    Jeez, Swisher got smoked.

  296. Xstar7 says:

So 42,020 is a new attendance high for Citi Field? That’s about the average game at Yankee Stadium.

  297. Jetrer says:

Does Logan bunting mean no DRob for the eighth???

  298. CUYanks says:

Cards finish off the Rays, 5-3.

    • Esteban says:

Good news, but I haven’t worried about the Rays in weeks.

      • tom says:

The Rays had crept pretty close…but haven’t quite maintained the pace the Yanks have been on.

      • CUYanks says:

I agree that the Red Sox have to be the Yankees biggest concern, but it never hurts to get some separation in the standings in case of needing the Wild Card, etc.

  299. Skip says:

Even if they take out Logan in the next half inning, I would think that there’s no reason to burn another bench player. I guess 3 runs isn’t a huge lead, so any extra would help. But it would also be nice to have a bench player just in case for injury or extra innings.

  300. V says:

If Nunez can learn how to throw to 1st base, he’ll be a solid major league shortstop, and potential trade bait for the Yankees.

  301. Greg says:

Wait a second.. I thought if the pitcher bat in the bottom, then he would have to pitch in the top

    • tom says:

Not a requirement. You can take a pitcher out at any time.

It did LOOK like Logan was going to stay in, but happily Joe went the more sensible route with Robertson.

  302. Karl Krawfid says:

Didn’t someone bring up 5 k’s in 1 inning yesterday lol

  303. Cy Pettitte says:

    that’s why BG > Jones

  304. Xstar7 says:

    Brett showing off his range.

  305. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Love how Kay said “Nice play” before it was caught :)

  306. Esteban says:

    Gardner’s range is unbelievable. Ridiculous.

  307. Ryan says:

Gardner is my wife’s favorite player. I think she’s attracted to GRIT.

  308. Jetrer says:

How is it that Swisher warrants a defensive replacement, but Nunez does not??

    • CUYanks says:

I see what you’re saying, though I guess maybe the conservative route is to not burn all your infielders in case of an injury?

  309. Esteban says:

I’m kind of sad that I don’t miss Jeter at all.

  310. CUYanks says:

Astros making a bit of a mess of their lead in the 7th now.

  311. Cy Pettitte says:

fuck this park, that’s a HR

  312. Karl Krawfid says:

    Damn thought that was gone

  313. Pat D says:

    Fucking cocksucking wall.

  314. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Citi Field’d

  315. Greg says:

    There’s the power.

  316. Esteban says:

Ahh stupid city field. Arod should have had another homer. Oh well. GO CentWAR.

  317. tom says:

That’s a home run most places

  318. Xstar7 says:

A-Rod got robbed. That’s a home run in almost any other ballpark.

  319. Karl Krawfid says:

    Mets fans leaving.

  320. Monteroisdinero says:

If Grandy trotted for 30 feet like ARod did (does all the time), he doesn’t score.

  321. Cy Pettitte says:

    Mets falling apart

  322. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

If ARod finishes with less than 30 HRs we know why…

  323. Jetrer says:

Mitre or Noesi for the ninth??

  324. Xstar7 says:

    Mitre took Noesi’s number? Lol.

  325. Jetrer says:

    Fucking Astros bullpen

  326. Cy Pettitte says:

    Mo? lol ok Joe.

  327. Karl Krawfid says:

  328. Ivan says:

Those he really have to bring in Mo here?

  329. Xstar7 says:

The only reason I sanction this move by Girardi is because it’s Jose Reyes.

  330. tut says:

Why even start Noesi if his “leash” is one ground ball base-hit?

  331. Karl Krawfid says:

    Mo vs Reyes.

    I like dis.

  332. Greg says:

Did Mo pitch against the Brewers? If he didnt, it makes sense to bring him in.

  333. mt says:

Why put in Noesi where the nonly way he stays in is if he does a 1,2,3 inning – at least let him pitch to Reyes – even if he homers then you bring in Mo.

  334. Esteban says:

    Mark Teixeira: Good at scooping.

  335. Xstar7 says:

Wait a minute, does Mo get the save now?

  336. Karl Krawfid says:

  337. Greg says:

He threw 10-11 pitches. No sweat

  338. Dino Velvet says:

    18 games over .500

    6 game winning streak

    13-3 without jeter

  339. Esteban says:

They play today, they win today, das it.

  340. Xstar7 says:

    The Yankees are on fiyah.

  341. Monteroisdinero says:

We play (with Noonie), we win!

Imagine what we can be with Tex scooping Noonie’s throws as well as ARod’s.

  342. mt says:

Arod should buy Tex dinner tonight – saved him 2 or 3 errors.

Nice to win a RISPFAIL game – we were losing these in May.
