Game 80: Subway Series

Chavez strains back during rehab
Yankees will send down Hector Noesi tomorrow

Here’s the starting lineup…

Nick Swisher, RF
Curtis Granderson, CF
Mark Teixeira, 1B
Alex Rodriguez, 3B
Robinson Cano, 2B
Russell Martin, C
Andruw Jones, LF
Eduardo Nunez, SS
Ivan Nova, SP

First pitch is scheduled for shortly after 7pm ET and can be seen on YES locally and MLB Network nationally. Enjoy.

Aside: I’ll be at all three games this weekend, though I got to the park too late today to sit in on Joe Girardi‘s and Brian Cashman‘s pregame press conference. Figures Cashman won’t be here the next two days. Stupid Whitestone Bridge. Anyway, I’ll have pre and postgame notes all weekend long, plus more.

  • Nuke Ladoosh

    Woo hoo

  • Greg

I think sitting Gardner is just for giving him a day off.

    • mike c

it better be, gardner is a lot better and should be playing every day

  • Greg

Girardi providing help to Nunez by having Nova play shortstop too.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

    “Ivan Nova, SS”

Guess he can get the ball to 1B more than Nunez can.

    • Salty Buggah

I like that idea. And if Jeter is playing, Nova can help make up for his lack of range (though his defense actually hasn’t been bad this year.)

  • Esteban

    Should of taken the Triborough

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

I shoulda taken the subway. Rookie movie on my part thinking a cab would be faster.

      • Ivan

        Arent you from Queens though?

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

          From Brooklyn, live in Inwood.

          • Ivan

Holy crap, im a BK kid myself lol.

  • Nuke Ladoosh

In NY for the long weekend think I’m going Sunday

  • http://twitter.com/Carlosologist_7 Carlosologist

It’s been seven years since The Dive play. There’s your daily factoid.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

It’s been 12 years since American Pie came out.

      • Nuke Ladoosh

        God I’m old

      • Dino Velvet

        12 years?

It’s been 40 yrs since Don Mclean released “American Pie”

    • Dino Velvet

I don’t remember, what was the dive play?

  • http://twitter.com/Carlosologist_7 Carlosologist

There is nothing exciting about the Subway Series. The Mets haven’t been really good in years, and even when they have, we’ve just embarrassed them.

    • first time lawng time

They won the series at Citi last year, though. There’s that.

    • JobaWockeeZ

Opinion =/= fact. And no I don’t think a 18-15 since the Mets DOWNFALL years can be called ‘embarrassing’.

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

    Over/under:

6 hits for Jose Reyes in this series?

    • Greg

      Under.

      • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

I knew I should have made it 5. That would have been more reasonable.

  • Greg

All we have to do is avoid being swept. We’re in their park, they’re playing well, we’re olaying well. Let’s see what happens

    • Wil Nieves #1 Fan

      We always olay well.

      • Greg

I know we rub lotion well, but lets see how we play.

        (couldnt resist).

    • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

If the Yankees lose two out of three to the Mets that’s a disappointment. We’ve been on a hot streak too you know.

  • Kostas

This series was fun the first couple years. Now it has become pointless, like Newman vs. Jerry

    • Rainbow Connection

I think it’s kind of exciting just hoping that the Yanks don’t get swept or lose the series. It would be embarrassing.

      • Kostas

Embarrassing would be Mets fans NOT doing the wave as has surfaced at Yankee Stadium. #blamerandylevine

    • JobaWockeeZ

Yeah let’s cancel that, cancel the Orioles series since that isn’t fun, or the Mariner series, or the Royals series, and the like.

  • Rainbow Connection

What are the implications of the A-Rod story?

    • Greg

None, IMO, considering other public figures were involved.

      • Rainbow Connection

No possible suspension? The other public figures don’t play for MLB.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

    Over/Under

3 balls hit by the Yankees that would be HRs anywhere else but get swallowed by Citi field

  • Drew

Mike how were you able to get acess to Girardi’s press conference?

  • Karl Krawfid

Didn’t Swish lead off with the Sox and didn’t like it?

    He’s pretty good at it.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Tex!!!

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

    Clutch Tex

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

    TEX!!

  • Kostas

    NICE!!!

  • JobaWockeeZ

Kay, the Yankees in like every other game are out of the gate quick.

  • Greg

Bad pitch selection by Niese. Should have gone offspeed.

  • Ivan

Boom, Boom, Boom, Yankees lead 2-0.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

    Alex should have bunted.

    NL’d

  • StanfordBen

Turned the game on a little late, I saw Arod batting with 0 outs and a man on 2nd and was like, “Wait, why is Arod batting 2nd?” Then I saw the score. Sweet.

  • Cy Pettitte

Teix is a fucking beast, love it. Please pound the crap out of the Mets and shut up their annoying fans

  • Nuke Ladoosh

I’m in heaven. Gorgeous bartender named Rachel. Hostess who I can’t take my eyes off of. 2-zip.

    • Dino Velvet

      Where you at?

  • Karl Krawfid

    Cano!!!

  • Cy Pettitte

    Robbie!!! what a double.

  • Ivan

    Nice!!!!!!

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

There you go Robbie, there you go

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

    Robbie is SO CLUTCH!!

  • Cy Pettitte

    Nunie’d.

    christ

  • Greg

    Nunez had no chance

  • JobaWockeeZ

    Fucking useless.

    • Kostas

Tsk Tsk…. Per RAB, Jeter is worse.

      • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

Jeter is bad. But Nunez is about 5 times worse.

        • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

Defensively anyway. They’re about the same offensively.

      • Jetrer

I’ve never seen anyone here say Nunez was better than Jeter. Jeter is a mediocre hitter and has no range. Nunez is just all around awful.

      • JobaWockeeZ

Jeter’s the same. Exact same bat, both such at defense. Thankfully there are worse.

  • Kostas

God that was a horrible throw by Jeter.

  • nsalem

    Close

  • iloveyoubartolo

    lol

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

    Nunez that’s awful

  • first time lawng time

Jesus how hard is it to throw the fucking ball if that’s your job?

  • Greg

Nunez wouldnt have gotten him anyway

    • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

He shouldn’t even have threw it

  • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

    Nunez is such a trickster.

  • Karl Krawfid

So I guess the Mets think they are the rangers now?

  • Cy Pettitte

wait, are the Mets doing the claw thing like the Rangers did last year? please tell me no.

    • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

Definitely looked like it. LOL METS

    • first time lawng time

Some guys on one of those sports radio stations were talking about it yeterday. Apparently, it’s called the “claw”. Pretty stupid if you want my opinion

  • Nuke Ladoosh

    There’s one

  • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

First pitch strikes are so lame anyway…

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

    Daniel Murphy hitting 4th…

  • Kostas

4 straight batters that Nova has started off with ball one. Not a good sign

    • Kostas

Unless you have Autobot Robbie Cano

  • Karl Krawfid

    OMG CANO!!! wow!

  • Jetrer

    Robbie!!

  • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

    That was sick!

  • Cy Pettitte

Robbie!!! oh my god, he is awesome.

  • Nuke Ladoosh

    Phuck yeah

  • Guns of the Navarone

That’s the best way the infield can get outs… don’t let Nunez touch the ball.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

    Nice Robbie

  • Simon

    …..show off

  • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

Who would you rather have: a healthy Jose Reyes or Eduardo Nunez

    • mike c

      robinson cano

      • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

        Gary DiSarcina?

    • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

      Marco Scutaro

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

That was a filthy double play by Robinson.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

    Nunez needs a different helmet

    • mike c

I’ll give him mine, I just have to finish the ice cream inside it first

  • Cy Pettitte

nice bunt, but please get a helmet that fits already.

  • jay h

that’s the kind of bunt we like, right?

  • JobaWockeeZ

    Take notes Gardner.

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

    Hooray for small ball!

    • JobaWockeeZ

      No it’s t3h sux0r.

      • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

        Tell that to Binder boy.

  • Nuke Ladoosh

Nunez makes errors Yankees roll. Reminiscent of ’98 Knoblauch.

    • Jetrer

he only had 13 errors in ’98

      • Nuke Ladoosh

They were “all” throwing errors and they started in April

        • Nuke Ladoosh

And never cost the Yanks a game

  • Cy Pettitte

    2 strike bunt = gritty

  • JobaWockeeZ

Even Ivan frickin nova can do it.

  • first time lawng time

Via E! News: Arod actually did not get mad at Cam for feeding Letterman popcorn. In fact, he thought it was funny. Also, his daughters make fun of him for the Superbowl thing.

    Cute.

    • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

Via ESPN: A-Rod is worse than Hitler.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

    Yay bunts.

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

That was a hell of an at-bat by Swish.

    • Greg

To be fair, he did foul a ball off his ankle.

      • mike c

yeah that doesn’t make it any better

        • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

          LOL

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

    Nice, Curtis

  • Karl Krawfid

Swish/Grandy had fat fastballs to hit and took them.

    Need to be more aggressive.

  • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

Oh yeah, Jason Bay still plays baseball…

    • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

      Regrettably

  • Greg

LOL At Let’s go Yankees!, Let’s go Mets!

  • Cy Pettitte

sometimes you really have to appreciate the Yankees facial hair policy

  • Greg

Prediction: This will be a bullpen game.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Woo another 2 strike hit.

    Can’t stand Nova.

  • Pat D

Nova’s doing his best…to make them drop him back to Scranton.

    • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

Yes he is. Three straight singles.

  • Cy Pettitte

    Nova can’t handle NY

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

    Nova must miss SWB

  • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

    Eesh Nova is awful.

  • Cy Pettitte

at least they limited the damage

  • Greg

Nova pulled an AJ there, limiting the damage

  • Kostas

Going to be a short night for Nova if he doesn’t start throwing strikes

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

    Nova survives. For now.

  • Tom O

So, is anyone else tired of Mets fans going on and on about how many home runs in Yankee Stadium wouldn’t be home runs in Citi Field? They never seem to thank about how many Yankee Stadium doubles (and even hard singles off the RF wall for a slower guy like Posada!) get turned into triples in the huge RF gap at Citi.

    • Mariano’s Pimp Hand

Or think how stupid it is to build a park like Citi Field.

    • Guns of the Navarone

I tend not to care what Mets fans think or say. I suggest you do the same.

    • Cy Pettitte

I’m tired of Mets fans, period.

      • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

        The Mets have fans?

        • Guns of the Navarone

          This weekend they do.

  • Greg

The Mets offense reminds me of the Royals offense from last year. The Royals had a great batting average and had to string hits together to score.

  • Guns of the Navarone

If only Nova could miss a bat. He’d be a hell of a pitcher if his offspeed stuff could develop more.

    • whozat

I think that applies to every 4/5 pitcher in baseball.

      • Guns of the Navarone

But I think Nova is at the bottom of MLB in terms of strikeouts. He really needs work. Any improvement in that area would be huge for him.

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

    Lucky ass single for A-Rod

  • Cy Pettitte

    Robbie giveth, Robbie taketh

  • Greg

    Cano has to hustle

  • Jetrer

pussy ARod needs to flatten that guy to stop the dp

    • Cy Pettitte

or slap the ball out of his glove

      • Jetrer

that would be bush league. Flattening him would just be old school

    • Greg

Remember the Buster Posey incident. Multiply that by 1,000,000.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Jesus Christ great inning Yanks.

  • Kostas

If you can run a catcher over, ARod should have ran over the second basemen. Was clearly in his path.

C’mon ARod lower that $20 million dollar shoulder and knock him down.

    • Jetrer

      $30 million dollar shoulder

    • Karl Krawfid

Should have done the water boy. Drop kick with both legs in the chest.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

I love the fans reactions when cameras run through the concourse

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

We’re seeing the night and day of Cano.

    • Greg

He didnt go to second because his body wasnt in the position. He was facing first base as he fielded the ball.

      • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

But don’t you think if he hadn’t bobbled the ball he would have had a better chance of getting the out at second?

        • Greg

          It was a tough hop.

          • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

            This is true.

  • Cy Pettitte

excited about a team that’s 10 games back, played way over their heads for a month and still lost games in the standings? ok.

  • first time lawng time

Do you guys say “Yankees fans” or “Yankee fans”? I say “Yankee fans”. Or “I’m a Yankee fan”. Or, “I’m going to a Yankee game.”

Random, but I noticed Kim say, “Yankees fans” and it made me think of it.

    • Esteban

They’re the Yankees, so I say Yankees fan, a Yankees player, etc.

  • http://twitter.com/Bismarck1872 Jerome S.

The Yankees should bury the Red Sox while they have the chance.

    /lolwut

  • Cy Pettitte

who the Sox even have to trade? I don’t follow their minor league system too closely but from what I’ve read it’s pretty picked through and thin, no?

    • first time lawng time

WHAT?! The Red Sox’ minor league system is STACKED! They are full of future all stars and HoFers. Thy are the envy of the Yankees.

      Or so I’ve read.

    • Guns of the Navarone

They have a couple arms like Ranuado and Doubront and some average positional players that teams would be interested in should they want to make a trade. Iglesias is their gem and I think they view him as their future SS.

      • whozat

He still can’t hit, right? So, he’s cost-controlled Jason Bartlett? I’m not sure that gets you a whole lot on the trade market

  • Karl Krawfid

    No fastball command.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

Marco fucking Scutaro hit a leadoff HR

    • Greg

      They’re playing Houston.

      • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

They lost 2/3 to the Pirates and Padres

        • Greg

Pirates and Padres are not Houston. Houston is the worst team in the NL

  • Karl Krawfid

Nice at bat here by Jones.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    NO SMILING ANDRUW!

  • V

Same pitch has been called for a ball three times for Nova.

  • Greg

They said Jerry Lane was a pitcher’s ump,. We better get that call.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Someone get the kid a chinstrap already.

  • Cy Pettitte

    Nunie double, helmet off. lol.

  • Esteban

Nunez really needs a helmet that fits better.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Nunez needs a new helmet

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

    That’s the way Nunie.

  • Cy Pettitte

Nova AB >3 pitches = win.

  • whozat

    Representative AB by Nova :-)

  • Greg

    Nova is battling

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

At least Nova saw some pitches

  • Jimmy McNulty

Meh, good process bad result with Nova.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Should have bunted!

    • Esteban

      of*

      • whozat

        You’re kidding…right?

        • Esteban

          Um, yes.

    • Greg

      FALLACY OF THE PREDETERMINED OUTCOME!

  • Greg

I consider that at bat a success given the circumstances

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

I consider it a success anytime the pitcher sees more than three pitches.

      • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

        Fuck the NL rules.

  • Esteban

Did that curve around the strikezone?

  • first time lawng time

It’s stupid that people complain about YS yielding too many HRs. So what? It benefits the hitters. Large parks, like Citi, benefit the pitchers. Why don’t people complain about that?

    • Esteban

Agree. And like TSJC once said, you’re the AJ Burnett of commenters.

      • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

        Well AJ is her favorite…

      • first time lawng time

        Wait. What do you mean?

        • Esteban

There’s good FTLT and bad FTLT.

          • first time lawng time

            Oh. Bad FTLT? Recently? Really?

            • Esteban

No, much like AJ, there’s been much more good FTLT than bad FTLT lately. Credit to you.

              • first time lawng time

                Okay then. Thankyou, I guess.

Still, at least I’m never rude to people. I’ve seen some comments on this site (some directed at me, some not) and some of them are rude and some people take things too seriously and should relax and remember that people are entitled to their opinions and that there are ways to disagree politely.

                Just an observation, though.

  • Greg

Lane called that a ball twice with Nova. He’s pissing me off.

  • Cy Pettitte

how many times are they gonna look at that curve?

  • Ivan

    Fuck, that curveball again.

  • Greg

That first pitch was a strike

  • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

I love that YES is playing Ace Frehley

  • Ivan

    good trivia question.

The only person that comes to mind is Rickey Henderson.

  • Cy Pettitte

    ARod wow.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Woo A-Rod!!!

  • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

    SEXY PLAY

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

    Wow nice ARod

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

That was a ridiculously good play. Go Alex.

  • Esteban

What a fucking throw. Arod looking nimble out there.

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

A-Rod doing his best Jeter impression.

  • Greg

A Rod just went prime Jeter

  • Ivan

    Ridiculous play by A-Rod. Sick!!!!

  • Kostas

    What is up with Granderson?

    • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

      Granderslump

    • Karl Krawfid

Looking at strikes crossing the plate. Swinging at balls out of the zone.

      He is 1 for 3.

    • Esteban

Why? He does have a hit tonight. He’s hitting HRs with less frequency, but it’s not like he’s fallen off a cliff.

  • Esteban

Arod has such a ridiculous strong arm. I wonder what speed he would get clocked at. You think he can hit 90?

    • http://twitter.com/Bismarck1872 Jerome S.

I bet he could pull a Swish and pitch a clean inning in a pinch.

  • tom

And the traditional “on second thought, let’s keep this guy in the game with a 9 pitch inning”.

    • Greg

remember pitcher needs to bat. so it helps us.

  • Simon

Where has Alex’s power gone? when was the last time he hit a homerun?

    • Pat D

      June 11.

But you expect him to hit one here?

    • Jetrer

      June 11

  • Jimmy McNulty

What the hell’s with this “crush a guy in the first inning, then get jack and shit off him later in the game,” bullshit?

    • Greg

YOu know a pitcher can settle down and get better, right?

      • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

        IMPOSSIBLE!!!!11!1!1!1!11!!

    • Karl Krawfid

      Yankee baseball

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

The only guy Nova can strikeout is the opposing pitcher. Lol.

  • Karl Krawfid

    2 k’s for Nova.

    • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

      …of the pitcher

  • Esteban

Why wouldn’t you throw breaking balls to a pitcher? Why would you try to make it easier on them (as long as you don’t walk them)?

    • Pat D

      It’s not “courteous.”

      • Esteban

Another one of those dumb ‘unwritten’ rules.

  • Cy Pettitte

seems to be the trend, can’t count the number of guys they hit hard in the 1st/2nd inning and got their pitch count up to 50 or so only to let them go 6 or 7 innings.

    • Cy Pettitte

reply fail, supposed to be in response to Jimmy McNulty

    • Greg

I repeat: You know a pitcher can settle down and get better, right?

      • Jetrer

that’s not always the case though. There have been at least a few games this year where the Yankees allowed it by hacking away in the middle innings.

        • Greg

I agree, but sometimes, give the pitcher some credit. Niese is a good pitcher.

          • Jetrer

yeah, I think today has more to do with how Niese is pitching than the Yankees approach

      • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

We’ll probably need more than a 2 run lead with Nova

      • Jimmy McNulty

THey can, but it’s not like Zack Greinke’s up there settling down. With this offense, the Mets pen should at least be warming.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Another 2 strike hit.

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

A-Rod should of dived for that.

  • Cy Pettitte

2 out hits = the worst

  • Ivan

Come on Nova, you was just cruising a minute a go.

  • Esteban

What the hell Justin Turner. He;s stunk lately.

    • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

      He’s a Yankee Killer

  • Esteban

Nelson Cruz would have gotten the runner.

    • Cy Pettitte

all the way from the DL?

      • Esteban

Oh ha I didn’t even know he was on the DL. I recently saw a replay of a throw he made to get a runner out at 3rd. Just reminded me of it.

        • Cy Pettitte

I don’t know if he is now, I was just implying that he’s always hurt, lol.

  • Guns of the Navarone

    This smells like trouble.

  • first time lawng time

And now the strike zone has tightened.

    • Jetrer

      those were all legit balls

  • Karl Krawfid

    Nova sucks.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

Home plate ump has a much smaller zone for Nova

    • Jetrer

nova is just throwing fewer strikes

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

All of this with two outs.

  • Guns of the Navarone

Coney droppin the knowledge. That’s all you need to know about Nova.

    • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

Cone’s awesome. So glad they brought him back this year

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    Ooo that bitch was borderline.

  • Jimmy McNulty

    PHEW

  • Esteban

FUCK YEA NOVA. Getting the K when you need it.

  • Guns of the Navarone

Just earned a little more respect for Nova… He threw some pretty great curveballs in a tight spot there.

  • Pat D

Would you pinch hit for him this inning if his spot comes up?

    • tom

If it’s men on base with two outs and no runs yet in, I think you think about it. He’s only got one, two at best innings left in him.

  • tom

They’re going to need alot out of the bullpen tonight — but Nova’s using up his pitches in the fine cause of run prevention.

    • Ivan

I think you can get 2 innings from Nova.

  • Ivan

    Big out.

  • iloveyoubartolo

    That took five strikes.

  • Greg

    Differencei in the game:
    Yanks: 2/11 RISP
    Mets: 1/7 RISP

    Let Chevy throw another inning?

  • Cy Pettitte

    moar runs please

  • Greg

    Do we bunt Jones?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Jones hasn’t sac bunted since 1998. And to get to Nunez and the pitcher?

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

    Runs please

  • Guns of the Navarone

I think I love Brian Cashman.

A-Rod: Reyes is the best player on the planet.

Cash: Yeah… No. Not at all. Cano has been the better player over the last few years now.

I’ve loved his honesty all year.

    • Ivan

And not to mention he’s totally right.

  • Karl Krawfid

Come on Jones. Make it 42 bro. Do it for Jackie/Mo.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Why didn’t we score.

    Lawd

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    WTF?

  • Cy Pettitte

    wtf was Robbie doing?

  • Pat D

Terrible baserunning by Cano. Should have been ready to tag.

    • whozat

He was ready to tag, that’s why he wasn’t able to score. By the time he and the coach could see what happened, the ball was already on the way to the cutoff man.

      • Jetrer

that was probably too shallow to tag. Shallow enough that he probably should have played it halfway in case it fell in.

  • Jetrer

how did the run not score??

  • Guns of the Navarone

Wasn’t Cano on 3rd? Why didn’t he score there?

    • Jetrer

went to the Jorge Posada school of baserunning

    • Guns of the Navarone

I see I’m not alone in my opinion. Three professional broadcasters in the booth don’t notice… at least everyone on this site does.

  • Ivan

If that play fool me, then I can’t blame Cano or the third base coach for that one.

  • Esteban

Andruw Jones smiled all the way to a good baserunning play.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

Send up Jorge instead of BG?

    • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

      Oh BG pinch ran

  • Greg

Cano was probably fooled like Kay was.

  • Hummingbird S.

absolutely the right move, good job Joe.

  • first time lawng time

No, Michael Kay, Derek getting to bat leadoff upon his return is not rightful. Gardner is the better hitter, therefore, he should be batting leadoff.

Jeter has done nothing in the past year and a half to earn the right to maintain that leadoff spot.

    • Esteban

      100% co-sign.

  • warren

god i really dislike michael kay right now

  • Cy Pettitte

    BG in, finally.

  • Pat D

I get pinch hitting Posada here. Not quite sure why you’d bring Brett in already.

  • Greg

    There’s Gardner

  • Guns of the Navarone

He’ll take a fastball right down the middle all the way.

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

    Goddammit Jorge!

  • Cy Pettitte

    Nova could have done that.

  • Pat D

    Swing the bat, Jorge.

  • Esteban

Oh well, didn’t work out, but it was probably the right move.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

    Fuck that curveball

  • tom

Nova could have done that. Just that way

  • Hummingbird S.

It’s like the Yankees have never seem a curveball from a LHP…

  • Ivan

    Figures.

  • Greg

Guys Niese is a good pitcher. That was the perfect pitch.

    • Hummingbird S.

Same pitch all night long. The hitters should be paying attention

      • Greg

You try hitting that when you the guy has a fastball and a cutter.

  • Guns of the Navarone

    EPIC risp fail.

  • Ivan

And Figures the Yankees do not score, smh.

  • Cy Pettitte

    fail.

  • Greg

Give credit to Niese there. Made some great pitches.

    • V

Nova made those pitches several times and they were continually called balls.

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

    Horrible.

  • warren

what is girardi doing?! he should have let gardner hit way harder to double up and more likely to get a hit anyway even with posada’s bat hot

  • Karl Krawfid

Great job taking fastballs down the middle Posada/Swish.

    • Greg

With a curveball that is on the outside corner. You try hitting that.

  • first time lawng time

This feels like one of those RISPfail/ LOB games. At least they’re winning, though.

  • Esteban

Argle bargle. This game shouldnt be this close.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

    epic fail

  • tom

That didn’t go as well as hoped.

Turned out the ball to Reyes was perfectly placed to keep the Yankees from scoring

  • Jetrer

Cano was lost. Thompson was like WTF are you doing.

    • Esteban

In the heat of the game, sometimes you lose your coaches. It happens.

      • Jetrer

He had the same view as Thompson though. Thompson saw it fall in. WTF was Cano watching.

        • Esteban

They obviously didn’t have the same exact view, or Cano didn’t see the ball fall somehow. It’s not like Cano wasn’t watching.

          • Jetrer

            just not watching closely perhaps

          • tom

The angle was just different enough that Cano was screened out. And Reyes’ body language fooled many (frankly, me included) into thinking he’d caught it.

  • Greg

Everyone here thinks the Yankee lineup is the greatest of all time. Give credit to the opposing pitchers. Niese is a good pitcher and he made great pitches.

  • Esteban

That’s a tough play for Cano, can’t kill him too much.

    • Guns of the Navarone

Totally disagree. Reyes is running out towards the outfield to make the play. Cano should be tagging no matter what. Reyes would have had nothing on the throw even if he had made the catch.

      • Esteban

That’s true, but it seemed like his first move was toward home and not to tag up, (which he probably should have done in that situation, but sometimes instincts take over) but once he made the move towards home and got screened, there’s not much he could have done.

        • Guns of the Navarone

it seemed like his first move was toward home and not to tag up, (which he probably should have done in that situation, but sometimes instincts take over)

Agreed with that. But the right play would have been to have been tagged up at the base the whole time… once he saw Reyes was going to have to make an over-the-shoulder catch to make the play in the first place.

  • Guns of the Navarone

    lolzone

  • Tom

Kay really sucks. He continually misses things on the field. Perfect example is Cano not scoring there. Not even a mention of it along with the 2 bozos sitting next to him. Its happened numerous times this year especially with mistakes made by the umpires and Girardi is chewing the ump on on a blown call and Kay continues with his head in his ***** without even referencing what is going on the field.

  • tom

Hard to remember the last time we had to watch the lesser part of the bullpen try to hold onto a winnable game. Yankee starters have either sucked wind — a la Gordon’s game — or gone 6-7, for what seems the whole last month.

  • Cy Pettitte

come on Ayala, don’t turn into a pumpkin just yet.

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

The Yankees are finally getting those outside calls.

  • Greg

THe ump has been bad for both teams

  • Jetrer

    thank Tex for that

  • first time lawng time

Lol what’s wrong with Niese’s nose? It looks like it’s bent at the tip.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

    • Cy Pettitte

NL parks are the Sox kryptonite

      • Pat D

So you’re saying that the Yankees should forgo using the DH the last series they host Boston?

    • Pat D

      Delightful.

    • Foghorn Leghorn

so ortiz is the lynchpin in that lineup, i guess.

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

Will Cory Wade come out for the seventh inning too?

    • Ivan

      Have too right.

  • Greg

Honestly, this game is right where we want it.

    • Jetrer

if the lead holds until the eighth, it will be

    • Cy Pettitte

agree, I trust Wade, Drob and Mo to handle this.

  • mt

    More runs please!

  • V

    Granderslump :-(

That swing looks long to me.

    • Guns of the Navarone

I was surprised to read the post here that showed pitchers really haven’t pitched Granderson differently. It really seems to me like pitchers have been offspeeding him to death over the last month plus.

And I’m not just saying that because he just now struck out and saw two curveballs and one split/change in a four pitch AB.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

He has a hit today and he’s been on base 11 times in the last five games.

      • V

        And?

He’s still damn good, and I’m not complaining about that, but his swing looks long, and it has sapped his power and led to more swinging strikes.

        • V

I really need to get my pitch f/x database up so I can check splits like SwStr% by subsets of the season. If I could get fangraphs stats with Baseball-Reference’s game log I’d be ecstatic.

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

    Take some pitches Alex.

  • Greg

Here’s the thing. You cant be patient and agrssive at the same time. You want to make pitchers work, and yet you want batters to swing. You cant have it both ways.

    • Jetrer

yes you can. Swing at good pitches to hit. Don’t swing at bad pitches to hit.

  • James A

I’ve never seen not only fans but also media so split on a free agent (Brad Richards)
I wonder if the Rangers will end up getting him

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

    Bad call. Reyes was safe

    • Greg

I dont know you can definitively say that.

      • Jetrer

        clearly missed the tag

        • Greg

If he did, it was by an inch.

          • Jetrer

if they had insant replay in effect, that call definitely would have been reversed

  • tom

Being screened out of a play giveth, and it taketh away.

  • mt

Good acting job by AROD! Cameron has come in handy.

    • Jimmy McNulty

TBH, Cameron could have taken a lesson from that sell.

  • Brandon

    A-Rod=salesman

  • Pasqua

Because the Mets are playing well: Reyes is a hardnosed gamer who’s being aggressive and trying to make things happen.

If the Mets were playing poorly: Reyes is being greedy and hurting his team by making bad baserunning decisions.

And that’s the fine line of professional sports in NY.

    • Guns of the Navarone

It’s whatever narrative will sell the most newspapers…or gets the most hits on a website. That’s what they go with.

      • Pasqua

Exactly. Reyes’s baserunning will be viewed in a completely different way tomorrow simply because of the way the team has been playing. Last year? I bet he gets skewered for getting thrown out at 3rd.

  • Guns of the Navarone

The throw beat the runner, so he’s automatically out.

    /thatoneumpire

    • Pasqua

And, somewhere, Derek Jeter quietly weeps.

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

I still don’t feel safe with Boone Logan on the mound.

    • first time lawng time

      Just believe in him.

  • Jetrer

Any chance Nunez gets sent down when Jeter comes back and keep Pena as utility guy. Nunez is absolutely fucking awful. At least Pena can play defense.

    • Guns of the Navarone

I think the fact that Nunez is playing every day in Jeter’s absence is all the answer you need.

      • Jetrer

Pena is more adept to utility role IMO. I would think if the Yankees really think Nunez is a legit prospect, they would want him to play every day and learn how to play defense rather than play twice a month off the bench. And I just can’t fucking stand watching Nunez fuck up anymore.

    • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

      Pena will be sent down

  • Kevin G.

  • Jimmy McNulty

Everyone okay with letting Logan bunt? I am, may as well let Swisher get an at bad w/RISP. Not like Peña’s any good either.

  • Monteroisdinero

Nunez with a LIVE bat-so refreshing to see (for a few more days).

  • Jetrer

Hopefully Girardi is saving Pena to replace Nunez in the field. I’m not optimistic about that though.

    • Pat D

He was about to double switch, I’m sure.

    • David, Jr.

Time for All Star Grounder Machine to come back so we can lose some games.

  • tom

Oh, great — Boone gets to say in the game

    • tom

meaning, of course “stay” in the game

    • Greg

So? Have you seen him lately?

  • V

I’m not a major league manager, obviously, but if I were, I would send up the pitcher to ‘sac bunt’, and send Nunez on the first pitch to steal second, telling the pitcher to take no matter what. Stolen base + save an out, then send up a pinch hitter.

  • Pasqua

First pro at-bat for Logan and he puts down a successful sac bunt? No sarcasm or irony intended: Nice job, dude!

  • Crime Dog

I like how Girardi’s trying to give D-Rob a night off here. Give him as much rest as you can down the stretch, just because youre up 2 or 3 runs in the 8th doesn’t mean he needs to be in. I like it

    • Jetrer

      nope

  • Ivan

    Jeez, Swisher got smoked.

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

So 42,020 is a new attendance high for Citi Field? That’s about the average game at Yankee Stadium.

  • Jetrer

Does Logan bunting mean no DRob for the eighth???

  • CUYanks

Cards finish off the Rays, 5-3.

    • Esteban

Good news, but I haven’t worried about the Rays in weeks.

      • tom

The Rays had crept pretty close…but haven’t quite maintained the pace the Yanks have been on.

      • CUYanks

I agree that the Red Sox have to be the Yankees biggest concern, but it never hurts to get some separation in the standings in case of needing the Wild Card, etc.

  • Skip

Even if they take out Logan in the next half inning, I would think that there’s no reason to burn another bench player. I guess 3 runs isn’t a huge lead, so any extra would help. But it would also be nice to have a bench player just in case for injury or extra innings.

  • V

If Nunez can learn how to throw to 1st base, he’ll be a solid major league shortstop, and potential trade bait for the Yankees.

  • Greg

Wait a second.. I thought if the pitcher bat in the bottom, then he would have to pitch in the top

    • tom

Not a requirement. You can take a pitcher out at any time.

It did LOOK like Logan was going to stay in, but happily Joe went the more sensible route with Robertson.

  • Karl Krawfid

Didn’t someone bring up 5 k’s in 1 inning yesterday lol

  • Cy Pettitte

    that’s why BG > Jones

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

    Brett showing off his range.

    • Esteban

He just taunts hitters, saying “see if you can hit it past me”.

      • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

And with Citi Field’s wide expanses, that no easy thing to do. So glad the Yankees have this guy.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

Love how Kay said “Nice play” before it was caught :)

  • Esteban

    Gardner’s range is unbelievable. Ridiculous.

  • Ryan

Gardner is my wife’s favorite player. I think she’s attracted to GRIT.

  • Jetrer

How is it that Swisher warrants a defensive replacement, but Nunez does not??

    • CUYanks

I see what you’re saying, though I guess maybe the conservative route is to not burn all your infielders in case of an injury?

  • Esteban

I’m kind of sad that I don’t miss Jeter at all.

    • Jetrer

I miss the mediocre defense. And I’m not being sarcastic.

      • Esteban

I think Nunez can cut down on the errors. He certainly has more range and a stronger arm than Jeter.

        • Monteroisdinero

This. Taking Nunez out for Pena is not the move to make.

  • CUYanks

Astros making a bit of a mess of their lead in the 7th now.

    • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

What do you expect? They’re the Astros.

    • Greg

Astros have the most blown saves in the league. Not surprising me at all.

      • CUYanks

But they do have the immortal Mark Melancon closing there…

  • Cy Pettitte

    • JobaWockeeZ

And the ‘stupid’ Yankee Stadium will make it up eventually.

I think Yankees Stadium is closer to the normal stadium than citi field is.

        • JobaWockeeZ

          2010 YS3 Park Factor for batting: 113
2010 CitiField Hitting Park Factor: 95

100 is a neutral park. The amount of cheap homers they get is probably double of what they are robbed.

          • Esteban

            ESPN says for 2011:

            YSIII: 1.051
            Citi: .899

  • tom

That’s a home run most places

    • Charles

*Thats a homerun anywhere besides Shitty Field

      • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

        Shiti field

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

A-Rod got robbed. That’s a home run in almost any other ballpark.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Mets fans leaving.

  • Monteroisdinero

If Grandy trotted for 30 feet like ARod did (does all the time), he doesn’t score.

    • Karl Krawfid

      I think he did

  • Cy Pettitte

    Mets falling apart

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

If ARod finishes with less than 30 HRs we know why…

  • Jetrer

Mitre or Noesi for the ninth??

    • Greg

      Noesi

    • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

Mitre if they want to get Mo in the game

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

    Mitre took Noesi’s number? Lol.

    • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

      I feel sorry for Noesi

  • Jetrer

    Fucking Astros bullpen

    • Cy Pettitte

      what in the fuck?

    • Greg

Game of no consequence and it doesnt surprise me one bit.

  • Cy Pettitte

    Mo? lol ok Joe.

    • Greg

This isnt a save. He wants the game.

    • Esteban

      Yeah, quick trigger here.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Asstros

    • Esteban

Ugh. It was too good to be true.

  • Ivan

Those he really have to bring in Mo here?

    • Ivan

      Does*

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

The only reason I sanction this move by Girardi is because it’s Jose Reyes.

  • tut

Why even start Noesi if his “leash” is one ground ball base-hit?

  • Karl Krawfid

    Mo vs Reyes.

    I like dis.

  • Greg

Did Mo pitch against the Brewers? If he didnt, it makes sense to bring him in.

    • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

      He didn’t.

      • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

        He pitched on Wednesday

      • Greg

There you go. Mo hasnt pitched since Monday. Get him some work.

        • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

No, I assumed you meant if he pitched in the last game of the Brewers series.

      • Jetrer

        he did

  • mt

Why put in Noesi where the nonly way he stays in is if he does a 1,2,3 inning – at least let him pitch to Reyes – even if he homers then you bring in Mo.

  • Esteban

    Mark Teixeira: Good at scooping.

    • Cy Pettitte

Mark Teixeira: half man, half vacuum cleaner

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

Wait a minute, does Mo get the save now?

    • Jetrer

      no

      • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

        Oh well

  • Karl Krawfid

    Yeah!

  • Greg

He threw 10-11 pitches. No sweat

  • Dino Velvet

    18 games over .500

    6 game winning streak

    13-3 without jeter

  • Esteban

They play today, they win today, das it.

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

    The Yankees are on fiyah.

  • Monteroisdinero

We play (with Noonie), we win!

Imagine what we can be with Tex scooping Noonie’s throws as well as ARod’s.

  • mt

Arod should buy Tex dinner tonight – saved him 2 or 3 errors.

Nice to win a RISPFAIL game – we were losing these in May.

    • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

Good thing the Mets were RISP failing even more.
