Injury News: Swisher, Soriano, Chavez, Marte

By

Some injury notes on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon, courtesy of Chad Jennings

  • Nick Swisher‘s sore quad is much better and he could have pinch-hit and played the field today if needed. They just played it safe and gave him the day off with the All-Star break coming up, figuring six straight days off would do the trick.
  • Rafael Soriano threw live batting practice today and isn’t all that far off from returning. “He’s getting to a point where we could see him in a [rehab] game fairly quickly,” said Joe Girardi before the game. Soriano is eligible to come off the disabled list on Wednesday.
  • Eric Chavez‘s sore back is still bothering him, but he’s feeling much better and is close to resuming workouts. I still wouldn’t count on him for the second half, anything he gives the team from here on out is a bonus.
  • Damaso Marte is not ready to face hitters but is still throwing bullpen sessions. Pedro Feliciano is still shut down with soreness in his shoulder.

Of course, the biggest injury news concerns Alex Rodriguez‘s torn meniscus. He’s getting a second opinion today, but it seems like everyone involved thinks having surgery now is the best course of action. Like I said yesterday, I’m on board with that.

Man we really could use Chavez about now too…But it’s good to see Soriano and Marte coming back, they would really be a boon to our bullpen.

    • MikeD says:

A “boon?” Never use the word boon, or a variation such as Boone, when mentioning the bullpen. It’s scary.

  2. David, Jr. says:

If they can get Soriano back to where he was last year with Tampa, look out. They don’t have many question marks, and that would take care of one of them.

  3. MikeD says:

If surgery is the option (and I’m on board with that too if he’s back in August), then hopefully it’s as soon as possible, meaning tomorrow.

And agree with Bria S. This would be a great time for Chavez to return. A Chavez/Nunez option can hold the position for a month if nothing better is available on the market.

  4. Peter B says:

Hopefully A-Rod have the surgery now so he could be strong down the stretch in the dog days of summer

  5. Pat D says:

Ha. The Orioles are still throwing at Ortiz.

    NESN blames the umpires.

  6. nycsportzfan says:

i got zero faith in any of the guys returning outside of Soriano, ALex eventually and Swish… As far as feliciano and chavez, no way…. I wish the yanks would bring up Brandon Laird for a stint, see if he can give us a jolt, the guy can play alittle outfield, 3rd, pinch hit….. the problem is, u won’t have many lefties on the bench, just ramiro pena.. Mike Lamb anyone?

  7. Oscar Gamble's 'Fro says:

Why is Girardi referring to Nova’s last outing as a “rehab start”? He also essentially said that three or four more starts like the last one for Hughes and there will be reason to be concerned?

  8. Naved says:

Imagine if Marte comes back at 100%. CYA Boone Logan
