2011 Draft: Yankees sign third rounder Jordan Cote
ByThe Yankees announced that they have signed third round pick Jordan Cote, though terms of the deal were undisclosed. I’m sure we’ll find out the size of his signing bonus soon enough, but there’s a pretty good chance it’ll be seven figures.
Cote, a 6-foot-5, 205 lb. high school right-hander from New Hampshire, was the highest ceilinged prospect the Yankees selected this year. Baseball America (subs. req’d) says his “fastball sits at 88-90 mph and touches 92, [but] adding strength and pitching in warmer weather should help bump his velocity, especially because he has great hand speed.” He also throws a curveball, slider, and changeup, but each needs work. “Cote has drawn comparisons to Chris Carpenter,” added BA, and “one scout said Cote has the highest ceiling of any pitcher in the Northeast.”
Update: Cote signed for $725k according to Keith Law, a very fair price. Honestly thought it might be double that.

Whats up with the second rounder, The LHP from TX I believe?
No idea. Some people have mentioned that there was a problem with his physical, but I haven’t seen that confirmed anywhere.
If they dont sign, they get a protected 2nd rounder next yr right
Just like Scott Bittle.
I loved his quote from around draft time that he had basically come to an agreement with the Yankees on a dollar amount before the draft but it probably wouldn’t be finalized until August because he was too busy this summer. What on earth could he be busy with that would prevent him from taking $1M from the Yankees?
porn? illegal gambling? xbox?
laptops?
letting the ‘roids clear his system?
Hey Jordan, got any open seats at that table?
He’s actually sitting with me on my couch playing PLAYSTATION, not Xbox, he’s throwing pretty well, and is in good shape, but has not signed… should’ve seen the bass he caught the other day, simply amazing.
In other words, “We have a deal but everyone tells me MLB will be pissed if we sign before August. I don’t really know why, that’s just what they told me.”
Collusion! Selig disapproves!
If you go back and read the article, Cote was not actually quoted with saying that. It would be, yet again, the media’s interpretation. I’m sure he would have been much happier off playing baseball this summer, especially where he was not a Yankee’s summer follow.
The only reason his compared to Chris Carpenter is that they both come from NH. It will be interesting to see him against real competition.
The only reason his compared to Chris Carpenter is that they both come from NH
that might be racist. or geographist… or something
It’s either Chris Carpenter or Carlton Fisk. Since he doesn’t catch…..it’s Chris Carpenter. DUH, Scouting 101.
Yanks actually drafted 3 players from NH this year. They all get compared to Chris Carpenter.
Or Matt Bonner. That guy is a living legend round these parts. Its like he’s the Larry Bird of NH, but nowhere near the talent or skill.
I’d say it’s between him and Sharp for highest ceiling. Sharp has the same frame, and probably more raw arm strength.
They are on these signings like white on rice.
15 of their 25 are inked.
Did Cole sign yet, and if so, how much $?
Umm…
another beanpole…this guy needs to put on about 20-30 lbs.
It’s called “projectable”. Gets your, I say, gets your terminology right Foghorn.
I say, I say, that boys got some projection left on him. Just like my aunt Egnor did when she got married before the growths started
That’s par for the course with kids coming out of HS.
Slightly unrelated, but have the Yankees shown any interest in signing Roberto Osuna?
I think he signed with the Blue Jays
Hasn’t yet but he will sign with them according to some reports.
Is there a list somewhere of who has signed and who hasn’t?

As always, thanks for the update, Mike.
Any word of this kid Jake Cave? I think I read he was going to be hard to sign but I don’t know for sure.
Cave is a likely sign, even the LSU Coach talked about it.
The other 2 I hope they get are 20th rounder Daniel Camerena and 41st rounder Jeremy Rathjen
“Have seen him, good body/frame, good arm strength, very raw, think they got him in a good spot in the draft. Deal is for something like $700K, very reasonable for his upside.”
From KLaw chat today re: Cote.
$725K
Fantastic, that’s a solid deal. The fact that the Yankees stayed under a 1M avoids giving too much leverage to Cave or Bird.
Keith Law says he hears the deal is for around $700k.
Maybe the Economy will lead to slightly more players signing than normal. Not thinking about Cote, but 20-50 range players.(Take the money so the ‘folks can payoff the house, etc.)
well, good to see this upside kid signed on the dotted line.. Man, i hope Stafford gets signed, that dude can pitch, and would really help makeup for the bleich disaster…
Now we finally have a starter for GCL!
Out of all the 2011 draftees Cote got me the most excited on draft day.
Jordan has the best arm I’ve ever seen as a high schooler. I played little league with this kid. Amazing talent, no doubt he’ll make it far.
Congrats Jordan! Everyone in NH is so proud of you and what you’re hard work earned for you!
Jordan Cote, you are the man. Watch this kid go, he can pitch.
