Game 159: Bury them
ByThe Rays did what they had to do this afternoon. If the Yankees win tonight, the Sox will have official blown their enormous lead and will be tied with Tampa with three games to go. Consider the Yankees a good samaritan, the innocent bystander that jumps in to help. Here’s the lineup…
Eduardo Nunez, SS
Curtis Granderson, CF
Robinson Cano, 2B
Mark Teixeira, 1B
Nick Swisher, RF
Eric Chavez, 3B
Jesus Montero, DH
Chris Dickerson, LF
Austin Romine, C
Ivan Nova, SP
The second game of the doubleheader starts at 6:30pm ET and can be seen on YES. Enjoy.

Of course the Yankees are innocent bystanders.
There, by definition, cannot be a “guilty” bystander.
/Jackie Chiles’d
It should be comforting for them to have their worst starter going.
This lineup is better than the afternoon lineup and Lackey sucks. Let’s get it done, boys!
Headline at Over the Monster (a Red Sox blog): “Jacboy Ellsbury Plays 1-On-10, Loses”
At least they have a sense of humor.
I know they’re desperate but this is the second DH in a week that Pedroia and Ellsbury have started both games in. that’s pretty nuts.
They have no choice.
No rest when a team is fighting for its life.
Pour it on !
If the situation were reversed Boston would find it funny to pour gas on the fire.
Looking foward to Lackey rolling his eyes.
If the situation was reversed, I think half the posters here would have already participated in a mass suicide.
You are correct. Can we select which ones?
FINISH THEM!!!
I don’t care that this game has little at stake from the Yankees point-of-view.
This is a big-time chance to stomp on their chowdered-up throats. Kill ‘em!
No Jorge smh Girardi is at it again
Seriously, Jorge DH Montero C.
let’s win this one for the Rays. Then the Rays will sweep the series against us and we’ll just say “awww, that was unfortunate … for the Red Sox”
Yanks beat Sox game 1.
Rays beat Jays
Giants beat the Eagles.
Bills beat Pats.
If the Jets can win and the Yanks take game 2 it would be a perfect day.
And if Washington can beat Dallas.
PERFECT WEEK!!!
Exactly. Perfect fucking week. Dream team got their asses handed to them.
Damn right!!!! You can’t buy a championship in football!
man, a spoiler warning would have been nice. So no need to watch football for me this week
Pedro would have drilled someone by now if he was still playing for the RS. Would have done it to phych himself/the team up.
Loving the Boston collapse…
Take a number
I know it’s pointless to criticize at this point in the season, but Nunez leading off? The lead-off man is supposed to get on base.
Ah, well, doesn’t matter anyway.
You’re 100% right.
About the 1st and 3rd parts I mean.
Let’s go Nova, pad your stats to boost your ROY case.
This game is starting off poorly for the Yankees.
Ellsbury led off with a hit first game and just made an out this game. Bad sign.
Wakefield looks like he’s ready to cry
They all do. I bet Aceves is killing himself for signing with the Red Sox.
Yeah, what a fool? All he has to show for it is $650,000.
9 pitches….LOL
Lackeys a scrub. Over/Under 7 ER?
Gotta like the pace Nova’s working at… get the ball, get on the rubber and fire away. (wish more Yankee pitchers worked like that)
The new Red Sox nation theme song.
Lackey could very well go 8IP 0 ER and put fire into his team and then they get hot just in time for the playoffs, then win the WS on a walkoff HR by Carl Crawford in dramatic, creating one of the most epic narratives of all time.
Let’s not declare this game a win just yet.
Let’s not create Tim Burton nightmare scenarios either! : -)
nope
at least on the 0ER
Still calling that?
Just playing devil’s advocate. =)
lol wow
HAHAHAH WHAT A START!!!
Haha Captain Varitek with a great throw!!
hahahahahha oh my god. just wow.
oh boy, I kinda feel bad… but not really. Should have been a HR!!
Lmao, man the sox are going down in spectacular fashion.
The Yankees are setting the tone early!
LMAO!!!
LOVE IT
LOL. Wow, that literally sums up this collapse of theirs.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha holy shit
How does a catcher make a two base throwing error on a double?
Was he trying to catch Tex at third or something?
yes
Yep
I’m actually glad that ball didn’t go out.
Same here, haha.
It’s more painful for the Sox that it didn’t, and the run still scored.
HAHAHAHAHA YEAH!!
zOMG
Following on Gameday, what just happened?
teix crushed one off the wall
lolberry throw to tiny then to the captn
both runs score and teix goes to 3rd on the throw
the captn then throws it into left field and teix scores
haha, that was my guess, thanks. And +1 to you Adam. I first thought how did someone upload it so quickly and then I clicked it. haha.
Not only did Tek throw it into right field, it wasn’t even close to the bag.
Best description ever.
Tex missed a homer by inches. Granderson scored from 3rd. Cano scored from 1st a head of the tag. Tex was going to 3rd and veritek through it into left field allowing Tex to score.
cool, the video highlight was uploaded onto mlb gameday. lolz.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
I’m laughing so hard right now, I can barely breathe. Just look at those faces.
Oh Happy Days!!!
While normally I love watching the pitch count rise early with the opposing pitcher, with Lackey the longer he can stay in the better I feel.
I’d just like to point out that Boston fans and media will point out their injuries, but the Yankees havehad their fair share of injures, too.
Jeter
Chavez
Arod
Hughes
Colon
Soriano
Joba
Feliciano/Marte
Cervelli
Am I forgetting anyone else?
Garcia was on the DL, Swisher wasn’t but he was hurt.
And we kept one of our best hitters down on the farm all year for 13M reasons.
Will ESPN be off the air after tonights game?
if the Sox miss the playoffs I think they take a day off for a day of mourning
Yes! Yes Sir it will.
They’ll just ignore the fact the Sox no longer have sole possession of first place and instead of comparing them to the ’27 Yanks they should compare them to the ’27 Sox.
All the Red Sox do is lose, lose, lose, no matter what
Got golf in october on their mind they can never get enough
Whenever their pitchers on the mound, we get to watch the ERA’s go up!
AND THEY STAY THERE!
The Boston LOL Sox
Imagine how Boston fans must feel right now.
I remember last September being painful for the Yankees (like 100000000 people left on base, RISP fail, etc.). But Boston’s September this year…ouch!
“Imagine how Boston fans must feel right now.”
Don’t know, don’t care.
Anything you can do we can do better…
*Imagines*
*Laughs*
This is turning into one of the most memorable regular-season September stretches ever, right? This is just… just insane. Every game feels insane.
Yup. I can’t remember a September being so insane.
Is it too late to add the 2011 Red Sox to this poll?
6. 2011 Red Sox
This is honestly the first time I have actually considered the collapse could actually happen. Ive thought all along the Sox would eventually pull it out, but honestly this could happen. This is insane.
same. 2 game lead with 6 left seemed pretty hard to mess up. I’ve completely underestimated their badness.
Yeah, even in the ’78 collapse — which would get my vote in the text poll, for sentimental reasons — the Sox, after going from 7 1/2 games up on Labor Day to 3 1/2 games down, rallied to win their last 8. Here, it feels like they might not win again till April.
agreed
i always thought it was fun to think about but no way could it actually happen
if they lose tonight its a crazy sprint to the finish
Shutdown inning!!!!!!!!!1!1!1!1!1!1!1!1!!!!!
I love the combination of the Red Sox choking and the Patriots losing this afternoon. Right after that ESPN magazine cover jizzing all over Boston sports teams.
Also if we win tonight, it would theoretically be possible to win 100 games AND have the rays get the WC. Two things that looked equally unlikely a couple weeks ago, and virtually impossible to accomplish at the same time even a couple days ago.
We would have to go 2-1 and the Sox would have to go 0-3, just fyi, but still possible.
As wrapped up as we are in the Sox-Rays drama, the games that still matter to the Yanks are over. Texas and Detroit both won, leaving Texas 93-66 and Detroit 92-67. So as of today the Yanks will be playing Detroit in the ALDS.
thats still left up to another day or two before we know for sure. Either way, live it up!
Montero barely missed both of those
What if the Yankees do get swept by TB the last three games? Yeah, that’d help eliminate Boston, but I feel like that might hurt the Yankees going into the playoffs. We don’t want them to be cold.
You absolutely play for your team and your team alone, however that doesnt mean we push our players or stagger large days off, etc.
by “large days off” I meant in terms of having several of the big names out of the lineup every day, ala the first game of our DH today.
I wouldn’t worry too much about that.
Heyzeus.
Montero is fucking strong wow
I just got my Boston issue of ESPN The Magazine Yesterday. I almost puked and then jut laughed instead. If the Yankees win the WS I will frame the cover with a poster of the 2011 Yankees.
I’m not sure if I received it yet, or I just chucked it out as soon as it arrived without even realizing there was a “Boston theme.”
I think that magazine is useless and I’m forced to get it with my Insider account, and the only reason I have that now is Keith Law. I sent ESPN customer service an email once asking if I could pay more money to never receive the magazine. I got no response.
Jesus is fucking awesome
Baserunning fail. Bleh.
Wow. Pretty impressive how well Montero was able to turn on that. Nice to see along with all that opposite field power.
Who said Jesus was infallible?
WTF Jesus?
Great play by Gonzo.
Got to tip your cap on that one.
Jesus has been turned loose. That was an impressive hit on a pitch way inside. But then he goes and pulls a Posada on the base paths.
Gotta take the good with the bad
how is that pulling a Posada? He did what every baseball player is taught to do, ground ball to the right side, runner on second always goes
Ok, it was a great play by Gonzalez.
If he ran from 3rd, that’saPosada!
Jesus + Austin doing well makes me very happy.
Varitek and Salty and we are worried about Montero’s D?
Doesn’t mean we have to sink to their level.
Romine racking up the opposite field hits.
damm jesus out at 3rd
Come on Grandy bust it open.
Jesus, doubront is warming up? It’s the second fucking inning! Lackey… Man I’m glad burnetts contract ends first. At least we got a ws win with him
I like to think of Jesus as a mischievous badger.
Carl Naughten Jr.’d
So I saw a tweet earlier saying Jesus was going to be on the postseason roster according to Girardi. Is that worth believing.
MinorLeagueBlog Top Prospect Alert
#Yankees Joe Girardi says Jesus Montero will be on the post season roster
At this point that should come as no surprise.
“He is our 2nd best hitter and that is why even I know to put him on the roster. He now has his own section in my binder and look-he can also hit righties!”
So far, no holes in Montero’s swing.
I honestly forgot that JD Drew even existed.
Reading this blog and Over the Monster is an interesting dichotomy.
The Good, The Bad and the Lackey?
LOL that is hilarious
If Boston does manage to completely miss the playoffs, then it has to be brought up more than 2004. I mean, blowing a 9 game lead with 27 games left is more embarrassing than blowing a 3 game lead in a best of 7 series. I’m sure the latter is more probable.
I personally think its close to as memorable, but I don’t know if to me at least it surpasses 2004.
At least it would take some of the 04 sting away, but not completely thats for sure.
There was baseball played in 2004? Huh…
IETC
Aww, I really wanted that no-hitter
Philly fans panicking over the Eagles and Red Sox fans continuing their angst over the collapse feels fucking great.
It’s eerily quiet in Yankee stadium – no music, no PA system, no nothing. Think they’re having technical difficulties.
Maybe the Yankees are trying to create a dirge-like atmosphere at the Stadium to further depress the Red Sox.
I hate Scutaro.
Yeah, it’s definitely all Terry Francona’s fault that the Sawx are playing like shit. Definitely not all their injuries and struggling pitching staff.
I blame Epstein more than Francona. The Sox have literally no pitching depth. Look at them compared to the Yankees with Nova, Noesi, Warren, Gordon, etc. They have Wakefield and Weiland.
Casey Kelly would’ve pitched them into the playoffs.
The Yankees farm system is clearly superior.
This team is deep and thick.
Francona is one of the few members of the Red Sox who I don’t really dislike.
Wakefield too.
Pretty much their entire pitching staff is a bunch of a-holes; but it’s hard not to root for Wakefield.
SuperNova getting the strikeout when he needs to.
Heh, half the fans here want Giardi fired and the yankees wrapped up home field. I cant imagine what they would want to do with him if the Yankees collapsed like the Sox are.
Comment from the game coverage on boston.com
“A DKNY Teddy Bear promotion at the ballpark tonight. They’re handing them out right now. I think they should the soft blue teddy to every Red Sox player on the field.”
haha
I hope we start Betances, Brackman and Proctor against TB. Jorge at 2nd and Mo in CF all three games.
/hahaha aha (breathe) hahahahaha….
We should let Mo start a game, then go to center, then get a save, all in the same game.
Just for the hell of it.
Greg Golson has to start at least one game, he seems like he has a good arm. I’d also give Laffey a start, and maybe let Billy Crystal start a game, we could dump Valdes off the 40 man to give him room
Ha. Boston’s gonna need a few more calls like that to climb back into this one.
When will Timmy be fired, he is awful. Call after call.
It’s that time for Swish to suck.
One of the worst postseason hitters in postseason history.
I hate acknowledging it, but it’s so true. Teixera ain’t too great either.
http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play......id=7033215
Cool . . . one hit. Wait, let me guess, I’m a troll, right? It’s settled then, I’m a troll. Thanks, mbonzo, my life has suddenly found meaning again.
Didn’t even look at your handle until I read this comment. Can’t you just enjoy the homerun and stop freaking out?
Yeah, cool. I enjoyed it two years ago, when it happened . . . Now it’s back to the bridge I go. Toodles.
Teixeira is good in the ALDS. Then he’s bad.
Yes, but that homerun was awesome.
Brosius has a lower OBP.
Yawn.
/bored by troll.
Yawn. Enough with this troll horseshit.
/Bored by banality.
Just like the Jets to fuck up a good party.
I guess a combination of Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio or Mantle would be too obvious an answer.
So if the Yanks win tonight, Red Sox nation will have to cheer for the yankees just as much as the red sox. That has to be extra painful.
Definitely Mattingly.
Nova rapidly approaching beast status with that slider….
Just tuned in. Come on let’s hold this lead! LETS FINISH THEM OFF! LETS GO!
Yeah that sub .300OBP guy is really igniting the Red Sox from the #2 spot!
Too bad Kei Igawa isn’t on the roster. I bet even he could shut down the Red Sux today.
I love how Nova was kind of written off as a 5 inning/start #4 or #5 starter, his development has been amazing.
Indeed. His development has been one of the most enjoyable aspects of the whole season.
His ceiling has always been said as a number three.
Two words: Billy. Beane. Sometimes projections are wrong.
Sure but Nova isn’t proving it yet. His FIP is still 4.00
It’s still good, don’t get me wrong but he didn’t do anything to show that the scouts were wrong…
Shouldn’t Hughes be in this argument somewhere? . . .
It’s that slider. It was a great development for him.
Never wrote him off. He’s SuperNova. Always been a fan. He just does what he does, no mental fuckery, no hoopla, no havoc . . . He is Ivan Nova, the Professional.
Last year, he legitimately had a problem getting through the lineup multiple times, so it was a concern. Something that he has clearly fixed this year.
His play really is impressive this year. It really wasn’t a mirage like Hughes’ season last year, he has gotten stronger and stronger as the season has gone on.
Poor Pete Abraham. He’s soured on Gonzalez. Just one month ago he was calling Gonzo the best player in baseball, today he’s calling Gonzo the most complacent player in baseball.
HA!
I saw on ESPN an hour ago a comment from a Boston Fan saying NOva is the most overrated rookie ever. If so the most overrated rookie ever is putting down the most overrated team ever.
Robbie! oh my
They should plunk Ortiz in this game. Just for the hell of it.
“all the hard hit balls are at someone” seems very prophetic at this point… well done so far boys.
LOL at Cano’s catch in the shift, coupled with Ortiz’s reaction.
Remember those games against the Red Sox earlier in the season where the Yankees were getting BABIP fucked left and right? Now the Red Sox know how it feels.
I always found BABIP complaining to be funny when the Yankees team BABIP is .295
Oh look, JobaWockeeZ looked up a stat on fangraphs. Conversation over.
/Joe Pawlikowski’d
Still doesn’t change the fact that the team BABIP is good
You’re right. It’s confirmation bias.
4 innings
50 pitches
1 hit
5-19 in September.
I seriously cannot stop grinning
If we could win the world series this year, honestly this could be on of the greatest seasons ever.
Jeter’s memorable 3k – and resurgent season
Mo’s record
Posada’s game winner
Sox collapse
Montero’s scotching hot debut
(assuming) WS
How do you beat a year like that?
I feel like this is a bit of ’96.
Still doesn’t beat 2004.
/ESPN’d
Mattingly is gonna be a good manager someday for the Yankees after they get sick of Girardi and his binder.
LMAO I’m reading commets on the overthemonster blog, and one of them is:
New York: Not a baseball town. That stadium doesn’t look half full.
and
(in reference to Kay and Singleton)yeah, both of these guys are pure haters. Pathetic. They can’t even conceal their hate of the Sox in the guise of being professional.
and
I ask again: what the fuck is so great about Ivan Nova? Every time I see him pitch, he’s lights out. The numbers don’t seem to add up.
The Nation seems a little testy today. hahahaha
they’re Red Sox fans, you can’t hold them to a very high standard…
I should really switch shirtseys from Bart Scott to someone on the Yankees before I go for a walk. People can’t even revel in the Patriots today.
BTW I’ve read nothing about Matt Kemp and the Triple Crown. As of yesterday, he was tied in HRs, leading in RBIs, and was only five, or maybe six, points off in leading in BA. That’s damn close and is doable.
When did LA become a small media market?
5 points of BA after 159 is doable, but not close. It would take a miracle.
Montero’s ABs just keep getting better
Honestly, Red Sox > Red Sox fans
Never thought about it like this but year, I do hate lots of the players, but the fans are unbearable. Though I would put Pedoroia on the same level as the fans now that I further think about it.
Never thought about it like this but yeah, I do hate lots of the players, but the fans are unbearable. Though I would put Pedoroia on the same level as the fans now that I further think about it.
Papelbon is worse than the RS fans
He him too.
yeah, fuck the players too, its amazing how many douche bags can be assembled on one 25 man roster and coaching staff
Fine, let them get the L sooner.
Might have gotten that one right. My slo-mo is inconclusive.
Lackey’s actually pitching well. Didn’t see that one coming.
3 R in 4 IP =\= pitching well. Were all the runs earned? If not, I’m wrong, you’re right.
Doesn’t he always seem to pitch well against the Yankees? I could be confused, but it often seems like he gets blown up by every other team except our own.
Yes. I’ve noticed that, too. I looked up the stats and in his to starts his year prior to this one:
5 IP 6ER
6 IP 3 ER
7 IP 4 ER
So not good, but not his usual terrible self.
Yeah, exactly, he has an ability to keep his team in the game when playing the Yankees. There’s a lot to be said for that. He’s certainly found a bit of a groove in this one.
Some good plate discipline by Montero. Not chasing the low and away slider/curves.
Swish is fucking horrible.
That was not an easy play
The hard hit ball off the wall is the outfielder’s fault?
and you’re a fucking idiot
No, he is not. But that was pretty bad.
Wow, how did that stay in the park?
How did it not land in Swisher’s glove? He was more interested in climbing the wall then following the trajectory of the ball. Frustrating.
I don’t think Golson makes that play…
I knew that was coming. Take my word for it. He would have.
Swisher adds more runs with his offense than Golson does with his defense. Can we please put this to rest? Swisher overall >>>>>>>> Golson overall.
This isn’t even an argument. Swisher adds more with his offense than Gardner does with his defense.
I didn’t bring up Golson. You did. See above.
Awful Swish.
What the fuck was that Swish? Totally misread where that ball was going to land.
NOOOOOOO!
VVVVVVVVVVVA!!!
Comon Nova, get it together.
If he runs to the wall he probably catches it.
Instead he turns a double into a triple trying to climb the wall.
This. But don’t insult Swisher’s D here. Dangerous and touchy subject with the locals.
It’s only a touchy subject when people refuse to acknowledge that he’s better than awful.
Big compliment. He is better than awful. He is an average fielder with a crappy arm.
You, after the play:
Oh please Mike. It was an awful play. Love being cross-examined for heat of the moment baseball comments.
he really didn’t have time to just run to the wall and stop, his options were 1)run hard to the wall and leap to stop his momentum and try to make the catch, 2) try to catch the ball while crashing into the wall without leaping, or 3) concede the double
It was a catchable ball, but it certainly wasn’t an easy play or a horrible effort by Swish, he just mistimed it in his haste
Yikes, can’t put Varitek on base. Especially without forcing him to swing the bat.
Don’t go AJ Burnett on us, Nova.
can’t have that from our #2 starter. Terrible pitch, gotta get Varitek out.
He has given up one run and three hits in 5 innings today. Just sayin’.
apparently #2 starters never miss location with a pitch
WTG, Nova.
That was a tough play, but Swish should have had it, almost hit him in the face.
Can Scott Proctor start all three games vs. the Rays?
That way we will always be facing such an early deficit that not even our offense will be able to make it up.
Why the heck not?
Now it’s time for them to get some insurance.
But will the Yankees go with Allstate or Progressive?
Gecco
I still can’t believe they didn’t get any runs in the third. Put these fucks to rest.
Quite a few atom balls tonight.
It’s John freaking Lackey. Tack on some runs, please.
How was that a swing?
Brackman to start tomorrow!!
not happening’d
I’d like to see them give Noesi, Brackman, Betances and Kontos all 2 innings tomorrow.
Lol it’s John Lackey.
Oof, he juuust missed that.
FUCK
I want more runs against Lackey.
damn, porch needs to be made shorter for the bottom of the innings.
offense must be bored, making Lackey look like a ML pitcher
The Yankees always make Lackey look like a ML pitcher.
FTLT was right, why can’t we hit Lackey?
39 baserunners and 17 runs in 23 IP against him this year.
Well why not tonight?!?!?!?!?!
I seriously wanted to hang him with a seven ERA by the end of the night.
Meh. it’s the 2nd game of a double header.
Tell that to Ellsbury, Crawford, Gonzalez, Pedroia, and Ortiz . . . They’re just playing, doubleheader or not.
Um, slightly different situation for the two teams.
Actually, considering that the Yankees can essentially control who they want in the playoffs, it’s a lot more similar than you give it credit. Should both AL East teams make it to the ALCS, who would the Yankees rather face? Rays or Red Sox? If they don’t have a preference, then so be it, but if they rather face the Rays then full fire power should’ve been utilized tonight, while tomorrow and the next couple of games may’ve been used to rest regulars. We’re both fighting here. Sox for a spot and Yankees for strategy. So, yeah, um, I stand by my point.
Ok. No more MVP for Granderson. I’d give it to Cano or Ellsbury. No Verlander.
Bautista.
This.
Cano over Granderson? No argument for that other than AVG and K.
Extra Base Hits, no? I just think this team is nowhere as good as it is now without Cano in the everyday lineup. You remove Cano and you remove the possibility of a World Series title. I believe Cano to be the X-Factor, not Curtis.
The difference is three extra base hits.
These ten minute Royal Caribbean commercials are horrible, they’re basically trying to get you to watch a commercial for their cruise by enticing you with a plot.
Allowing Red Sox to creep back into this game. Everyone lulled to sleep, Yankee fans and hitters alike.
Crawford gets a hit and Granderson doesn’t…
WTF?!?!
Pedroia would have made that play. And he would have made it look really hard too.
It would have been over his head.
Was about to start freaking out about Nova and the game. then I realized the Yankees have home field throughout AL playoffs and don’t need to win this game, it would just be nice and relaxed.
Fastball command is going bye bye for Nova.
This inning right here will decide whether or not the Red Sox make it to the playoffs this year.
No it won’t.
Mark my words. Mark ‘em good.
So are they in?
Inning’s not over, honey.
Oooo, that’s a fun narrative.
This is nauseating. Don’t put life back into them.
Nova is imploding..
What the fuck? End this shit you assholes.
I’m starting to sweat a little, I REALLY want to beat Boston this game.
Kevin?
Can’t let these clown get back in the game.
Ivan Nova must feel very sorry for the Red Sox.
Nova just can’t locate his pitches.. command has been bad
Bring in Burnett.
Everyone needs to chill out. Seriously, no matter what happens, it’s not a big deal. Especially, because even if the Yankees win this game, there’s no guarantee they’ll lie down and roll over for the Rays.
Have to be kidding me.
just ew, Robbie.
Very MVP-like by Cano. Really X-factor-ish.
I laughed!
You’re a bit of a sourpuss, aren’t you?
That was a tailor-made double play ball. Very frustrating.
Gold glove play right there. At least they got one out……
Come on Yankees, don’t turn into the Red Sox
Papi roid rage
Thank Cano!
holy Teix. how did he even do that
I thought Tex was useless…
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ahahahahahahha PEDROIA lololol
Scrappy!
Phew…
Wow, lucky.
lmao red sox fail
Laser show!
Not gritty enough.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Now score some runs.
LOL! That little elf tried to frolic home.
WHAT A HOP!
sooo
does jesus make that play?
That Yankees caught a HUGGGGGGE break there.
LOL, nothing goes right for the sox. Btw, is Rick “wild thing” Vaughn on the mound?
Leprechaun leap!
what a gritty leap.
Could you imagine if he would have made that play with a jump over a catcher?
ESPN would have blown him for months.
they will anyways
did cano boot a double play
Yeah pretty much
alright…let’s start hitting this good lookin’ lackey guy…
Austin Romine: True Yankee
Well ESPN has their headline if the Red Sox lose… Sox get unlucky…
Yanks resort to luck to beat dominant Lackey
offense is already on vacations
yanks offense hasn’t had a hit off lackey since the 2nd inning, is pathetic
It really is.
It’s just so frustrating seeing every team tee off on him yet the Yankees get shut down for most of the game…
I guess the Yankees don’t want to score anymore runs.
What’s EXTREMELY frustrating is the pitch count . . . He can throw 2 more innings easily.
Cy Lackey
Romine made a great play…but I still wish we could see Montero behind the plate. We’ve gotta figure out whether or not he is competent enough to catch a playoff game if it comes down to it.
Fucking embarrassing.
All of our left hand hitters getting embarrassed inside.
One of them should man up and cheat on the inside pitch like Ortiz.
What ever happens, Lackey came up big for the Sox. Veritek’s stupid throw to third, could keept hem out of the playoffs.
From Peter Gammons:
No way. That has to be a joke.
the 1927 yankees had 19 more wins their the 2nd place team….
You’re kidding, right? He didn’t actually say that . . .
Probably his fake account. Or, I really hope it is.
might be time to get Nova.
Lowrie-Yankee killer
also a nerd
I was about to post a comment about how I didn’t like that Nova was still out there, pitch count be damned. And there he goes and gives up a leadoff double.
get the BP going.. Nova can only hit the middle of the zone
hey a hit , nova gotta blow the lead
Infield in? Really?
do we see soriano and mo if nova gets out of this.
god dammit I hate Marco Scutaro.
Girardi fail, should have pulled Nova before the beginning of the 7th
agreed
If we lose this ballgame the Sox will make the playoffs. The Bears didn’t finish off the Packers in last year’s regular season and it came back to haunt them. We need to finish off the Sox.
Remember, Sox lost 3 of 4 to Baltimore.
That’s Swisher’s fault in some way, shape or form.
ummm, why is Nova still pitching
Uuuuugggggggghhhhhh
well shit.
Ugh, gettin the ground balls they’re just finding holes.
geeshis christ, Joe…
Far too many good hitters on the Sox. It’s much better for the Yanks if Tampa passes them.
Couldn’t agree more. As gratifying as it’s been to watch Boston self-destruct, we’ve gotta remember that they were the best team in the league for the majority of the summer.
I’d strongly prefer not to play them in a 7 game series.
left nova in way too long
You can’t let JASON VARITEK beat you.
Nova is throwing up some meatballs. Suprised Joe is leaving him in. He really shouldnt have even come out for the 7th. Lol, gave up another hit while I was typing
Not to make a bigger deal of this than it needs to be, but maybe Joe is second-guessing burning Robertson this afternoon now?
Nah, they were a homer away from making it a one-run game when Robertson came in.
With a guy that had hit two homers in the game at the plate.
I don’t think that’s right, Mike. I think there was only one on with two outs. Just checking the box score, he would have gotten a save if he’d entered with the tying run on deck. He didn’t get one, so that is consistent with the way I remember it (or it could just be a typo or something).
Either way, you didn’t need to give him the ninth (though I guess you probably wouldn’t use him in the nightcap even if he only worked to one batter)
No they weren’t, it was 6-2 with 1 runner on base.
It was a good move to take Burnett out, but you didn’t have to go straight to Robertson at that point. 4 of the next 5 batters were lefties, and the tying run was sitting in the dugout. You could have brought in Boone Logan there instead, and let him finish off the game against Crawford, Ortiz, and Gonzalez.
NOW he takes out Nova.
This is our #2 starter. Playoffs are gonna be a fun ride. Also, heckuva job by Girardi (not really)
They left Nova out there waaay too long.
Exactly. I don’t know what Girardi was thinking. Good thing this game doesn’t count.
It doesn’t matter that the Yankees have already wrapped everything up.
Tonight is a huge opportunity to potentially keep the Red Sox out of the playoffs, a team that you know can turn it on at any moment unless you finish them off right here.
It sickens me to hear people say that Lackey “came up big” tonight. No he didn’t. Look at the pitches he is getting hitters out with. Cutters at 86 mph belt high on the inner half. Fastballs right down the middle. Pathetic.
Never lost a game when he had the lead!
Defense failed him though.
The hell? Did the offense take a nap after the first? (I was eating dinner.)
Time for a walkoff win.
What. The. Fuck.
WHY THE FUCK DID YOU LEAVE NOVA IN YOU FUCKING SHITBIRD
what the hell…i know they yanks aren’t playing for antying but damnit…I don’t want the sox in for the sheer reason that they can be trouble. Lester and Beckett can be a formidable 1-2 with plenty of post season experience and that lineup can hit.
you simply can not leave anything up to the Orioles…
It was all good just an inning ago…Where’s the love, in the heart of city?
Well it looks like the MSM will get that Boston/Philly WS they were all looking forward too.
Honestly, my caring level is still about a 3 out of 10, and that’s the highest it’s been all week.
For a meaningless game, this has fucking sucked.
Only four hits against fucking Shellackey is pathetic in every possible way.
This falls squarely on Girardi. Wade or Logan could have been used in the 7th. Or even Soriano once Nova gave up the double. But Joe was saving Soriano for the 8th like an idiot. Now he has Wade warming.
Pretty unimpressive game by the Yankees. Cant really blame em though. Everything wrapped up and second game of a double header.
This is depressing… I shouldnt have expected Boston to collapse…
I’ve still had faith in them all along, which is why I value winning this game so much. They’re still entirely suited to win it all. I don’t have a doubt about it. We need to murder them while we still can because you never know what you’re going to get out of the Orioles.
Boone got Ellsbury out! wow.
I want these Sox dead.
Now score some fucking runs.
Boone, you did good.
Frankly I dont care. The lead will be one game. The Sox lost 3 of 4 to Baltimore so losing in Camden Yards
Talk about not doing your one job right …
Yeah no kidding. Gathright is back for MLB for one reason, and what just happened is the exact opposite of that one reason.
That’s the Boone Logan we’ll need to see in the playoffs.
Yes. Let’s hope he sticks around.
AROD’S gotta pinch hit for Chavez here right?
It will be so much more crushing if the Yanks can win this game now.
Lackey is gonna throw a shutdown inning. Just watch.
/hoping I’m wrong
I bet they go to Aceves
I was wrong…
Technically you were right.
No, you just ejaculated prematurely.
No worries people Montero is coming up second this inning, all will be rectified by then.
Knowing Girardi he’ll try harder to win the next 3 games than he did this one tonight.
I wish I knew Girardi like you!
Anyone complaining about this game as though it is somehow indicative of a larger problem is really shortsighted.
i think all yankee fans are still spooked by 2004..i know I am. I want them out of the playoffs. there is no reason to give them even a glimmer of hope here…
The hell is wrong with you?
I just want us to smash the fucking Red Sox.
Or is just a big fucking dummy.
Anyone who thinks this game matters so little that it only registers as a “3 out of 10″ is really shortsighted.
Even though I cannot tolerate those who do the whole “+1″ shit . . . I am going to give you the dreaded + 1,000,000 . . . . I don’t want these cockgobblers in the playoffs. Every Sox loss helps that cause. And, as Foghorn Leghorn once said, I’m “still spooked by 2004.”
What’s so important about this game? It’s obviously important for the Red Sox, but who cares about them? We can beat anyone in the playoffs.
Umm, Boston is still the 2nd best team in the AL. Have you forgotten their record from May-August? They are an incredibly dangerous team, and they can turn it on at any moment if you let them in.
If you beat Boston while they are down, you can potentially take the next best team in the league out of the playoffs. That is huge. Texas and Detroit are no slouches, but Boston is better than both. Most of the games between the Yankees and Red Sox this year have been very tight.
The game doesn’t have an impact immediately, but it can have a huge impact if you end up letting them in and have to face them in a championship series. Knocking out the next best team might make the road a bit easier.
I agree Boston is a very good team, but at this point I hardly give a damn whether we beat them here or in the playoffs.
It’s not like we’re going to go out of our way to do this.
If there is a “larger problem” it’s this: that the Yankees had a chance to drive a stake into the Sox heart and MAY (game ain’t over) have allowed them to evade it. The point being that the Sox are very dangerous, in a way that LAA and Tampa are not.
Every team is dangerous in the playoffs. The only way this game matters to the Yankees is if someone gets hurt. They did what they had to do.
in playoffs, everyone is dangerous. Anything can happen in 5 or 7 games. Ask the two teams with the best record in the league last year. Philly lost to SF and TB lost in ALDS to the rangers. There will be no cake walk to the championship.
Putting them in a tie isn’t driving a stake in their heart. Its hitting a seasonal reset button with Tampa facing us and Boston facing Baltimore. Even with a loss tonight, Boston is in a slightly better position.
where’s ARod??
I smell a come back.
If Ace coughs it up it will be even better.
Jesus 2 run bomb here
Girardi is gonna call for Montero to bunt Gardner over. Power bunting over speed, Girardi baseball.
Atta boy Lackey. Way to be a good teammate.
“Why don’t you [mouth breath] shut your fucking [mouth breath] face.” – Gorgeous John Lackey
varitek getting hurts, hurts ny running game
Lol, lackey has some balls to be pissed at being taken out. Tito would have been fired right after the game if he left him out there for another batter.
lol that was great
It’s alright, the embedded Yankee is pitching. Agent 91.
Gritty, gutty Brett Gardner.
Gardner new career high in SB.
Saltalolmaccia
I have to say, I really can’t believe what I’m reading here. The Yankees have clinched the AL’s best record, are a time zone ahead of the Red Sox, are cruising into the playoffs…and now they fall one run behind in the 7th inning, and everybody’s ready to bridge-jump? What are you all, 12 years old?
Even a 12 year old remembers 2009. Its really, really stupid. Girardi could pull the team off the field right now and forfeit and it wouldn’t matter a bit.
All of what you’re saying is 100% true, but losing to the Red Sox always sucks. You’re not going to disagree with that are you?
Losing to other baseball teams in the playoffs sucks.
Point taken.
Gardy needs 2 more for 50.
Good ab by Montero. Not chasing bad pitches. Me gusta mucho.
C’mon C-Dick, get a sac fly.
come on a sac fly please
PH
kinda surprised at no PH
Me too. But I guess it worked out ok.
Squeeze just to fuck with them.
Aceves can throw 95?
C-Dick comes through.
Dickerson gets it done!!!
Nice job by Cockerson.
I though it was Penison?
Where did this scrappiness come from?!
Hahah love Lackey’s reaction.
Gritty Peedy relay. Lol.
Damn, beat me to it!
Great minds think alike. So pathetic-I mean gritty to throw Gardy out on a relay tagup from 3rd base.
That was a gritty relay by Pedroia….
Not many players make that useless throw home.
I saw that too – It reminds me of his little hop, stupid and pointless… man I hate that guy.
Yay C-Dick!!
nice job
Well done, C-Dick, well done. Now it SoRo (and if necessary) Mo time.
no Ro
No Ro. I’m sure Joe won’t use him tonight after he went 4 outs this afternoon.
Kind of surprised he didn’t pinch hit at first, but it seems pretty clear that Girardi wants to get a more in-depth look at him for consideration on the postseason roster.
Please tell me atleast one other person here is watching the NESN feed. After the run scores, they cut to Lackey and this was the sequence …
Close eyes –> Shake head –> Pick nose –> Put head in hands
Hahahahahaha I literally LOL’d at that mental image.
Now bring in Soriano and Mo to shut them down for 2 more innings. We can score another off Acevez or Bard.
Has there been a Buenlos sighting since he was called up, like even warming up in the pen during some of those blow outs? Or did he pitch as many innings as they were going to allow in the minors?
He wasn’t called up
He’s not on the 40 man. He’s been invited to work out and practice with the team but that’s it. But he wouldn’t pitch even if he was on because he hit his limit.
Ahh, thought he was one of the guys on the 40. Didnt realize he was just hanging out with the team.
Banuelos hasn’t been activated, he’s just with the team working out. Not on the roster.
Good job, Aceves.
Walkoff pie is gonna be awesome.
What would be even better is a zero celebration walkoff.
Who’s televising the post-season? Is it FOX? If so another reason for trying to finish Boston. If they get to the post-season, we’ll only hear about their courage, never-say-die spirit, etc. I would rather listen to Sterling and sweet Su, if it weren’t for the delay between the two media
TBS does division series and NLCS. Fox does ALCS and WS.
Crawford sucks against everyone else, but still seems to like facing the Yankees.
It’s extremely annoying.
More 0-2 fastballs to this scrub.
Jesus man. Switch it up every once and a while.
0-2 hit to Crawford is just sad
ROMINE
Wow, Austin. Wow.
Hell yes, Romine!
Hey Boston- Our fastest runner is faster than yours and our backup catcher is better than yours.
I think I could be a better catcher than Varitek.
That wooden box sitting in the back alley soaked in rain water filled with rat feces is probably a better catcher than Varitek.
You’re giving ‘Tek too much credit. There’s a great deal of value in a box of that condition.
I think if we took an old fridge and painted a large “C” on the door, everyone would mistaken it for Varitek.
Our backup (Cervelli) backup (Jorge) backup (Montero) backup (Romine) backup is better than their backup. Might as well throw Sanchez or whatever his name into the mix as well.
Awesome.
Also, our #1 prospect is better than yours.
Our backup (Cervelli) backup (Jorge) backup (Montero) backup (Romine) is better than their backup. Might as well throw Sanchez or whatever his name into the mix as well.
If he weren’t playing in Boston, I’d feel really bad for Crawford by this point.
Not to mention he’s been a baby- he told a reporter to talk to the
“Captain” the other day instead of interviewing him.
Tony Pena work man.
Never fails.
Romine! what a fucking throw
Bang-bang. Awesome.
Actually let me correct that- THROWMINE.
I need sleep. THAT WAS AWESOME THOUGH.
I’m 100% on board with that nickname until further notice.
Sweet!
Thro-mine, maybe? Throwmine. Thromine.
Great hustle, Papi. You’re a true gamer.
The first rule of Austin Romine is you don’t run on Austin Romine.
The second rule of Austin Romine is you DON’T run on Austin Romine.
Why Is Romine back there?
ARM!!!
any more questions
No Bard… interesting.
If backswing:swing ratio were a positive statistic, Nunez would be one of the best players in baseball.
I’d love to see Ace and Bard fuck this up
Would love for Grandy to do something here. In fact, I demand it.
That insolent bastard . . .
If Lavarnway is so good why doesn’t he play?
keeping him fresh for the playoffs? lol
They really don’t have anywhere to play him. Can’t catch, not going to DH with Ortiz.
Let’s be real. The Yankees suck against other teams’ bullpens and they’re relievers suck in extra innings. They’re not winning this one, folks.
http://www.baseball-reference......9010.shtml
That’s one game.
Against the same team and pitchers we are facing now. Also the whole RS pen has been shit in september.
One game, one at-bat, one pitch . . . that’s apparently all you need around here to make a point. I’d link a comment if I knew how.
Haha. That’s usually my theory. It’s also true. I’m a genius? Why thank you, I already knew that.
Well, we could examine this logically. But I’m tired. Fuck the Yankees, amiright?
Wow, how condescending of you. I prefer my Yankees ripe, tight, and virginal, thank you very much.
I would like for Cano to do something awesome here.
You fucking asswipe Cano.
Cano you suck.
well that just guarantees that there will be pie
Jesus is getting pie tonight.
I’m scared of extra innings, so let’s walk off in the 9th, ok boys?
Red Sox, we ain’t looking at you…we looking past you.
When was the Yanks last walk-off win? It feels like forever ago, but I could be wrong. Regardless, it’s a good night for some pie!
I think it was June.
Against Texas, wasn’t it?
Was at the last one, Gardy walk off against Texas in 12 innings. One of the better games this year (no milestones) IMO.
Agreed.
Would be nice to replicate that tonight, only in 9, not 12.
Let’s see if this is the other Mo that only shows up during non save appearances.
Mo in non-save sitches and Mo against the Red Sox – These are the Mos that make me Mos’ nervous.
Thanks Boston.
Mo is a very old man.
Oh great.
Scutaro.
NOOO!
OF COURSE Scutaro comes up here.
I can’t believe I’m worried about Marco Scutaro.
I can’t believe I’m worried
about Marco Scutaro.+1
Heh, just IBB Scutaro.
Are you in Joe’s head?
they’re listening
Of course it’s Scutaro.
ZOMG…it’s Lars Anderson! Future hall of famer.
IBB Scutaro lolololololol that’s so Girardi
Hah, they are walking him.
umm…coaching visit to the mound when Mo is pitching. I demand an explanation.
Never was a huge fan of the pinch runner in a tie game with a guy on 1st (especially if it’s a guy like Lars Anderson who isn’t all that fast and isn’t going to steal a base)
I get doing it when you get the guy to 2nd, but if the bunt fails (or they get a force), you’ve taken out one of your better runners/hitters for minimal gain.
I don’t care if he owns mo, why would you walk scutaro?
.294 with a homer agaisnt Rivera.
Eh, they never IBBd bonds when he was facing mo
Rivera : Scutaro :: Pedro : Enrique minus an 8 figure deal
Strike 4!
hahahahha Mo is so good. love it.
Nasty bro
Pie time!!
It’s been far too long. Hopefully the baker’s been busy tonight as I am craving a nice, warm slice of STFU Boston.
Hopefully AJ’s arm up for it after pitching the first game.
Maybe they could’ve gotten Scutaro out, but Mariano is too old.
Bullpen advantage may now pass to Boston.
No I think its even.
They still have Papelbon, its definitely with them.
Papelbon struggled against the O’s in his last outing.
Rivera has still be considered awesome after his off games.
(been)
Posada pinch hit walkoff HR?
(Montero’s up 4th and you know Girardi is thinking it)
Cannot pinch hit for Jesus.
Pie please
C’mon Tex. Don’t make me hate you more than I already do.
I don’t like what the Yankees will be bringing in after this inning. Win now.
Please tell me how Corey Wade in not the next guy in?
F’n Girradi and his slave to platoons
Wade could probably use the rest before GAMES THAT FUCKING MATTER.
Wade’s pitched once since Sept 21st… (and threw 5 pitches in the outing)
Nice narrative though…
That was like, four days ago.
So Posada is playing 1st if this game goes extras?
Or Swisher at 1st, Golson in RF?
They’re trying to figure out if Valdes will be of any possible use.
How the fuck is Aviles not headlong to get there?
Jesus with the walk off.
Make Bard throw a tone of pitches
we must break him.
Nice at-bat here.
Maybe the yankees need a closer that isnt 600000 years old
Mariano could fart dust for all I care. He’s still better than everyone else.
I bet Mariano would still make a great closer even at 600,000 years young.
nice AB Tex
GOLSON FUCKING TIME!!!
Look, Golson is a handsome guy, but I’m just not into that. I am flattered, though.
Very nice, Tex.
Niiiiice
Tex had a great at bat.
PR Golson
Goalie for the win. He scored last time he pinch ran.
Pinch Runner, not sure how I feel about this when defense is suddenly so valuable in extra innings.
Golson to the OF, Swish to 1B. Not that much lost if anything.
Joe wants to avoid extras
Going all out to win it now
I know. It’s just that with our luck against relievers and extra innings . . . Just hoping that it works out now so I don’t have to be bummed out later.
Pie, plz
Unbelievable that ESPN’s shot on the MLB page right now is captioned “Leaping Back In” with a shot of Pedroia leaping at home.
Makes perfect sense they would. You can see the story-line shaping up if the Sox get the W.C.
They should superimpose Brackman into the frame, still taller than Pedroia’s leap made him.
They DO know that he was out on that play right? RIGHT???
A tragedy by the Bard?
Hahaha, that’s a good one. But I’d prefer a comedy.
Run!
Way to stay out of the gidp. Good job Joe.
Grumble grumble, too bad he didn’t steal earlier. Oh well.
Steal of 3B would be pretty awesome here if Gardner weren’t so lefty.
Hard to believe Gardy can do anything against Bard.
Be agressive. Go for third. Nothing really to lose, something to gain.
I have to go to the bathroom really bad. Speed sure can slow down the game HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!
Okay, Mr. Baldwin.
Yeah, that was creeping into play. Saved by the IBB.
It’s Jesus time.
Stripes.
Jesus pie-superstar!
C’mon Jesus!
Lameness
Pie for Jesus
oh boooooooo….
#RESPECT
PH ARod for Laird PLEASE
PH A-rod now.
Get Alex in there.
PLEASE put Arod up!!
Teams already fearing the Baby jesus.
Posada!
Jesus walks!
JOrge Pinch hitting!
Its Posada
Wow, you ibb a rookie that just came up 3 weeks ago? Damn that’s some high praise
Still not as good as Lavahhhnway.
When you’re the son of God that’s what happens
WTF??????????????
Everyone shut the fuck up. I love this decision. Last regular season home game for Jorgie.
Did someone say something?
the stadium will explode if Jorge gets the walk off hit
Time for a little Po action.
Rookie getting IBB’d, shows you a hint of what’s to come.
Posada over Arod??
Just FYI Jorge… it is the bottom of the 9th this time…
So Kay is reading RAB’s comments for his material now, eh?
hahah.
Each team gets a key single by their 40 year old catcher?
Off topic, in 90 minutes my thumb will have been bleeding for 24 hours.
Put some pressure on that shit,yo.
I can’t, I took a divot out of my thumb. Just needs to slowly heal.
(My wife’s official due date was yesterday and I was nearly the one in the hospital. I’m really, really cool.)
From FanGraphs during the top half of the 10th:
Carl Crawford reached on fielder’s choice to pitcher (Bunt Grounder)
Does the phrase “Bunt Grounder” look like Brett Gardner to anyone else?
ugh reply fail
I commend your grittiness.
Cooked dinner tonight on my knees.
That’s downright Pedroian.
This game is making it seriously hard to right my paper due in class tomorrow.
Green light him.
Swing or no swing on 3-0 with Nunez coming up?
Sorry, Romine. Never mind.
I say you bring up Rodriguez just to see if you can totally mindfuck Bardamite.
Now A-rod.
No matter what happens, this game totally rocks.
Time to earn your legend Austin.
Romine is gonna hit? what? wow.
You gotta put A-Rod in to hit off Paps Joey
The unintentional, intentional walk.
No A-Rod for Romine?
inorite?
They better PH ARod
Gotta go to Jeter I think.
Incredible, this is a war they’re fighting tonight
It’s the kind of war you want to WIN in case you meet these guys again in Oct.
Lost control after having to IBB a guy who’s been in the majors for less than a month.
I know Joe doesn’t want Martin to catch again but you can end the Sox season here. PH A-Rod and end it. Martin might not have to catch anyway with a walkoff hit or walk.
Really? not going to PH for him?
big spot jeter or arod?
sorry captain gotta go with arod on this
Well, Jeter has been swinging the hotter bat lately.
Good cut.
Don’t get why they aren’t using ARod
Unwise to put this kid up agin Pap
Nobody to catch after Romine? Lose the DH?
still have Martin, or Posada without losing the DH
They won’t use Martin after he caught all day.
yeah I know, but they could have used Posada
I just think it makes sense to go all out to win it there and avoid extras. Oh well.
Kay sure knows how to trample a moment to death doesn’t he?
Darn it, I knew they should have added a Chad Moeller type to the roster in September.
Why did they pinch run for Posada?
I didn’t even realize they did.
Posada’s not going to play defense, so you might as well have someone else run for him
Force at second on the world’s slowest grounder to nab the league’s slowest runner? (after papi)
Just wp it here and get it over with Papelblown.
He would leave the game anyway in the next inning for Pena. And Pena is less likely to screw up on the bases, as irrelevant as it seems.
Good job Girardi.
Sigh.
Damn man I didn’t want extras
The downside here is that they have to keep having someone pitch. And that the only way I can end tonight mad is if I have to watch Proctor.
Fuck. If you take Teixera out, why not pinch hit for Romine? Fuck.
should have played to win and PH for Romine.. another unfortunate mistake by Girardi
Had to figure an off-speed was coming was he was up on him with two strikes. First time facing him, wouldn’t know what to expect.
The Yankees can win this in the bottom of the 10th if they can make it through the top of the inning with whomever they plan to throw out there.
ARod could’ve done that too…
Good pitch.
I guess Girardi didn’t want Jorge to have to catch. That’s the only excuse for not PHing for Romine.
could have used martin
MArtin caught the early game. Lest I remind you, the Yankees dont need to win this game.
Why was Romine left in to hit?
http://riveraveblues.com/2011/.....nt-2903037
Yeah, if they’re not gonna use Montero as a catcher they should have another catcher on the roster besides Martin and Romine. If they have a Gus Molina Arod hits there. Bad job by the Yanks on roster management
Who do you drop off the 40 man so you can have Gus Molina ready to go in a completely unimportant Game 159?
scott fucking proctor
Sold.
Cervelli would’ve had a twenty bounce dribbler up the middle for the win.
Getting Valdes in against Ellsbury and Crawford is actually a nice little look.
never thought i would say this but
jeter makes that play
Eh, it’d be nice to win this but not at the expense of not resting a player that had a heavy work load. This game is meaningless for the Yankees anyways.
lol eduardo
I do that once every three weeks in softball. I do not get paid to do that.
Valdez reminds me of Ron Villone. His motion, stuff, everything.
Stubby short armed short armer. Agreed.
“What about me,” asked Felix Heredia.
Typical risk averse Girardi.
wow, they almost turned that
This is fun as shit to watch as a Yankee fan, would be really hard to take as a sox fan.
you know i just realized that
all of a sudden it came over me, this game means NOTHING to the yankees and everything to the red sox
if we lose eh so be it jeter, arod, and martin need the rest thats why there was no PHer for romine
They would have pinch-hit for him if they had a fifth catcher on the roster.
Crawford is so full of fail…
Couldn’t they have have PH for Romine with ARod, and moved Montero to C, losing the DH? They still have plenty of PH’s available in case a pitcher or two needed to bat in a really long game.
Any doubts on Girardi’s stupid LNOGY fascination now?
Valdes last 3 years
Lefties: .991 OPS against
Righties: .666 OPS against
I could see the move if Wade wasn’t available….
How many batters faced is that though? Can’t be many.
A little over 90 PA’s vs lefties
A little over 160 PA’s vs righties
Are you looking at the wrong guy or counting minor league stats? His debut was in 2010 and his major league numbers aren’t those.
I pulled a 3 year split… the #’s are all 2010 (but still accurate just all in one year)
this year only: .732 v. LH, .753 v. RH
SSS though, 22/20 PA
Yeah, you’re right. Mea wronga.
(I take it back, those numbers are pretty close to right. I clicked on single season splits.)
Pedo looked like he was thinking RF there.
what ever happens this game is a win to me you know why?
jesus got his first of MANY IBB
http://www.thatgayjesus.com/we.....-jesus.jpg
Didn’t they Angels IBB him?
damn youre right
ok now they need to win
Jesus will need to have batting order protection next year. None of this batting 7th or 8th.
OH YEAH CORY
Wow. Now THAT was a strikeout.
Gritty foul tip.
Great pitch Cory – Bye Bye Petey.
that was filthy
alright, Pie time
Good inning Wade.
I know it shouldn’t, but this game is making me anxious.
You’re a fan like the rest of us. You can’t help it, even though it really isn’t an important game to the Yankees. I want them to win and I can’t help but be anxious too.
Imagine if the situations were reversed. That is true anxiety.
I would be shitty vomit.
shitting.
can’t believe the Rays just let us have Cory. lol.
right now they are happy to have let him walk
Right. Whenever people complain about how we let the Red Sox have Aceves, I just think of how the Rays just let us have Cory.
And the Dodgers let anyone else have him. Didn’t make sense from the start.
All right, let’s get some pie this time.
Gardy/Grandy/Golson
3G blanket coverage.
That has to be about the best defensive OF a team can put out there. Except for Anaheim.
/ESPN’d
right now the rays are happy they let cory wade walk
I’m glad Papelblown is still in. Will make this so much more fun.
Absolutely.
TIME TO SHINE BABY
4-10 in extras. They’re due for a correction, right?
I really want the Yankees to win this one, not so much because they need the win but because I’m worried the RS could get a lot of momentum if they win this one.
as weird as it seems
if the yankees lose i almost hope its because of a yankee misplay rather than something good from the red sox
Greg endorses this^ comment
I don’t know if this is a good game for me because it means nothing or because it means so much to the Red Sox.
But hey, Lackey got a quality start. Ha.
Jesus Christ these Ks are getting really annoying.
of course, yanks have 2 hits since the 2nd inning
all they need is 1 big hit
This team is so fucking bad in extra innings. Something’s got to change.
It’s all the old players, they get tired come 10 o’clock.
BEst record in the AL. Yeah, something has to change.
That sucked.
Fuck this team.
the team that is the best in the AL? yeah, they suck.
You need to relax. Take a hot bath or something and sit this one out. It’s just a game. It doesn’t matter.
X-Factor’d
Haha, you’re kind of a dick. Did you know that? Pretty sure your man, Granderson struck out as well . . . So, yeah, how many strikeouts does that sum up to now?
I’m just busting your balls.
Seriously, though. Who do you believe is more imperative to the everyday lineup? I think it’s Cano. Also, Granderson, in my opinion, strikes out too often to be considered an MVP, especially with that batting average he’s lugging around.
Cano is the straw that stirs the drink. Granderson can only stir it bad.
/Bronx Zoo’d
Granderson has hit for more power and makes fewer outs than Cano.
They’ve both had great seasons, but overall Granderson has been slightly better.
The strikeouts might be a deal breaker if they were making outs at the same rate, but they aren’t. Not all that close, either.
Best post on SOSH:
We should not be wearing out the Yankees pen when we need them to beat the Rays 3 times.
question- why didn’t girardi bring martin in for romine with the bases loaded?
Because this game is completely meaningless
….meh
Martin caught the first game. No point in wearing him down a week before the playoffs.
Martin caught the first game. AND WE DONT NEED TO WIN THIS GAME
Papelbon was really pleased with himself there. Good for him!
You’ve gotta give Papelbon some credit, it’s hard for him to be even douchier than usual but he managed to pull it off.
Good inning. So how do we lose this one? Will it be a Lars walk-off bomb or an Aviles walk-off triple?
Joking? Can’t get walked off on at home…
Too bad the Red Sox can’t walk-off since they’re on the road.
walk off on the road.
Only those Red Sox could pull it off.
I’ll be that one commenter who says something about how the ’09 Yanks would have won in the 10th already.
Or something about relating how good that team was in extras to how bad this team is in extras.
I’ll be that other commentor who points out that the best extra innings record in MLB belongs to the 4th place Blue Jays.
Actually, the Dodgers have a better win percentage. Even better.
they’re gonna wreck Papelbon, this is too good.
At first I was wondering what Tito was thinking sending Papelbon back out for another inning, but when you look at it they really have nobody else out there.
They burned Papelbon for tomorrow already, might as well get their money’s worth.
Agreed. Plus, they need this game so desperately…there’s no way that they can put their season in Albers’ or Tazawa’s hands.
Gotta make the Yanks beat their best pitcher.
PH Jones and try to end it with Jones, Swish, Gardner, Montero. We don’t want to get to Proctor.
Ayala comes first.
Prediction: Drew homers but is too apathetic to round the bases.
/everySoxfan’d
Love the strikeouts from Cory!
Great job by Wade.
Cory is the best 6th (or in this case 10th/11th) inning guy in the league.
Time for some major Papelfail here.
Hey it’s almost like a righty with a changeup can get lefties out better than the recycled schmos that Girardi calls LOOGY’s can
/beatingadeadhorse’d
Valdes actually did a pretty good job. Bloop single and then made a nice play on the bunt.
Good result does not equal good process (or good decision)
they were seeing if he is any good in a meaningless game, I’m fine with it.
It says I can log in for commenting features. What are these features?
This game really needs to end now, I have to get some work done haha
red sox want this game BAD
pap for more than 2 innings?
I’m calling a Nick Swisher walkoff.
Well so much for that.
Golson’s eyes are too far apart.
He looks like one of the big blue guys from Avatar.
The Avatar.
Hey Mike-we agree!
When Papelbon blew the save against the O’s and I saw him interviewed after the game, I never realized what an odd and scary looking guy he was. Pale, greyish skin, sunken-in, dark roundish eyes, with a slit for a mouth and no lips. Reminded me of something, then I realized what it was:
http://www.2012changesarenow.c.....liens.html (safe)
Just sketch him and use the picture every time a frat boy date rapist is at large.
Even Red Sox fans have to admit, that’s a pretty big collection of ugly motherfuckers they’ve got up in Boston.
What’s odd is I posted that note not knowing right above it was a comparison of Golson to Avatar.
I guess it’s Who-Looks-Like-An-Alien night at RAB.
Papelbon definitely wins. He barely looks human.
It might just be me, but I actually think he looks like a squid when he does that stare.

Romine convo with the ump was pretty cool
I thought he said “I’m no Montero”
But I may have misheard.
Gardner walkoff inside the parker here
I wonder if there has ever been a walk off inside the park home run. That would be nuts!
I’m guessing no, only because I imagine most third base coaches would play it safe in that spot.
What if there were 2 outs?
There have been 14 inside-the-park walk-off home runs since 1950.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I.....rand_slams
Just caught word that Marte, Feliciano, and Mitre will start the next three games to see if they can offer anything in the playoffs…
Fuck this game.
How? A game cant be fucked.
Wow. That Paps is mowing down this lineup. Not lookin’ good.
Proctor?
Noooo!
Give Wade a nice ovation. He pitched great.
Lots of applause from me.
Laffey noooooo!
I know this game does not really matter, but I am tired of sitting through extra inning failures by the Yanks. Is it too much to ask for a W here? I want to bury these guys.
The folks at Coca-Cola used to say, “What do you do when the competition is drowning? Shove a hose in his throat and turn on the water.”
If there’s a call to the bullpen, the answer should never be Laffey.
Laffey? this can NOT end well…
Aaron Laffey is laughable.
But hey, he throws left handed so…
Ayala Noesi.. Anyone but F*cking Laffey
You forget that this game is totally and completely irrelevant. I’d rather have those guys for tomorrow, since all the normal Big Guns have pretty much pitched today.
Ayala sure. Noesi might be starting tomorrow.
Laffey? Why do I fear Joe will have him on the post-season roster? Nooooooooooo!!!!!
No chance. He’s down to third in the LNOGY pecking order. No chance they carry 3 lefties.
Gameday injury delay? Again? It’s not Wade, is it…?
Man, just was looking at Pap’s stats. Forgot how ridiculous that dude was in 06 and 07. Monster years.
Michael Kay: Girardi managing liek HE wants it.
*Aaron Laffey enters the game
WTF is Laffey in?! Girardi’s in favor of ending this via loss I see.
Beautiful turn.
wow you have to be kidding me!
win dis game!
I can’t watch. GTFO Laughey
lol GIDP
Did Aaron Laffey just do something right?
Am I hallucinating?
A-Rod had a talk with him
Wow Laffey actually got a lefty out AND Elsbury hit into a DP??
Golden YCPB.
Girardi’s confidence level in Laffey has gone up. CRAP!
Now end it, damnit! We’re playing with fire with these AAA pen guys. If you’re not gonna PH for Romine at least PH A-Rod for Pena and Jeter for Nunez.
This is such an awesome game! It doesn’t matter and the Red Sox still can’t score.
Montero will get pie with one swing.
Such is the beauty of percentages in baseball…… even the worst pitcher wins over half the time as we saw Laughey “induces” a double play against Ellsbury
PLEASE PINCH HIT! I can’t watch a Pena AB. PLEASE!
end it Jesus.
Montero’s still in the game? I thought he was pinch run for or something. Maybe I’ve watched too much baseball recently. Nah.
jesus walk off
needs to happen
Montero hit a walk off against a lefty in the minors.
Watch him do it in the majors.
The Say Hey-Sus Kid.
Let’s do it.
Wowwwwww Jesus didn’t miss that high fastball by much.
trying to do too much Jesus
I’ll take it.
divine intervention
Hell yeah!
BABIP gods with Jesus. Makes sense.
Now ph.
Here comes the bunt.
I’m starting to think the hype was justified. This kid is a professional hitter.
Jesus’s magic
he singled to save the yankees from eternal damnation
Those 2 drunk blondes behind home plate are distracting.
WTF is going on here? Is old man A-Rod injured or something?
Don’t fucking bunt, PH instead…
WE DONT NEED TO WIN THIS GAME
Did Jesus shake his wrist?
Why is pena batting now?? I’m homing Arod just got skinnier
Worst managerial decision of the year. Dumbest bunt of the year. Yeah, I went there.
having Ramiro Pena bunt is nowhere near the dumbest bunt of the year. There have been many dumber bunts than that one.
It was a dumb bunt because he shouldn’t have even been at the plate. Alex Rodriguez should’ve been there instead, not bunting.
ARod played the first game. Joe isn’t going to want to leave him or Jeter out in the field in case the game keeps going and going.
EPIC FAIL
sweet free out
Good job.
TERRIBLE bunt.
Wow, totally didn’t see that coming.
que mike axisa.
I was in favor of the bunt. One run wins the game. Pena didn’t do the job.
Pena can’t even bunt. How does this guy make an MLB team?
Montero was practically standing on first base. Gotta go on a bunt attempt. GO!
Pena could solve world hunger and I’d still hate him.
they better have Pena steal now.
giradri showing why he can only manage a pen
I really don’t want to see Ramiro Pena anywhere near the Yankees in the future.
Steal.
So apparently there’s no interest in winning this game. Cool. Right on. Now I know.
That was begging to be hit
BALK
They missed it-his front foot moved after he came set.
Where’s Balkin’ Bob Davidson when you need him?
I love this home plate umpire’s voice. It sounds like Kiefer Sutherland is calling balls and strikes.
Remember when this team was so good in tie games?
I don’t because they been THAT bad since. This team can’t hit for shit against opposing bullpens. It’s actually quite laughable.
Maybe they should put in legit ML hitters…
At least we’ve gone some of those due up next inning.
I’m guessing the only way Jeter, ARod, Martin, or Jones see this game is if they have to replace an injured player.
The BoSox and the Yanks ALMOST always find a way to make every game a 4 hour + marathon. We’re going on towards 4.25 hours here with no end in sight.
A Yankees-Red Sox game isn’t really a Yankees-Red Sox game unless it’s 4+ hours long.
Well at least we’re wearing the red sox bullpen out and ours so we have a great excuse to rest the bullpen = starters against TB. its gonna be SWB vs. TB to device the AL playoff race
Long game is long
After today I think ima take a break from baseball till the ALDS.
Yankees-Sox is draining me.
It feels like 12:47.
Karl Krawfid – No tool player.
Crawful
Take Laffey out for Pedroia, moron.
But he’s got no LOOGY’s left to face Ortiz and Lars Anderson… Girardi would have to forfeit the game at that point.
shit aint do or die man.
Certainly wouldn’t leave in Laffey against Pedroia.
Laffey vs. Pedroia is just asking for it.
I know monteroisdinero will kill me for suggesting this, but Joe could hit A-Rod for Golson and shift Pena to the outfield if necessary in the bottom half of the inning, right?
/hopingforrealhitters
he won’t pinch hit because he would have to stay in to play the field, looks like Joe is just going to go with the guys already in the game.
Ok as much as I hate to say it, props to Ellsbury and Pedroia for playing 21 innings today.
Calling it now, Ortiz is gonna homer off laffey
Laffey or Proctor.
McClelland is a pile of scrotums.
Ew. Easily the most vile picture my mind has ever illustrated.
Out by a mile.
Garbage call
Holy Crap, how the fuck you got that call wrong u fucking moron?!?!?!
Blind old fuckers
shitty fucking umpires
I’m not one to accuse umpires, but McLelland has to either have money on the Sox, or have orders from up on high to make things ‘interesting’. Holy wow.
Fucking bullshit call man.
Another terrible call by Tim McClelland. This guy needs to be fired more.
shit he was out
wow he was out by a mile
Tim McClellan got blinded by the fackin grittiness.
Tim Mclelland just wants to go home.
Girardi holding up the 3 fingers was a really nice touch.
Wasn’t even close…
2nd REALLY bad call.
It’s one thing if you have to watch 10 replays and go frame by frame, but that’s two that were obvious real time and obvious with one replay at full speed.
Right. The Dickerson (I think) GIDP was close enough to debate. This and the Swisher GIDP were so fucking obvious.
McClelland is blind
The Glorious human element!
why is mcclelland even positioned where he is? he is straight up out of position.
JUST END THIS GAME.
All that grit got in the umps eyes….
Inning Over….what wait a minute it’s not.
wow just had a heart attack but lol papi sad
Kill the umps. Bring in the Robots and Replay.
must’ve had grit in his eye from the slide
I know this game means nothing for the Yankees, but it would be so sweet to win. Surely Jeter and ARod want to play…
Bullshit.
Does anyone want to win this game?
Red Sox Nation.
Wow. This strike zone is shit too, huh?
Am I going crazy, or has Laffey pitched really well?
Yeah!!!!!!
woooooo!
I want some sleep!
21 yankees in this game lol.
End this shit already. I need to be productive.
Laffey’s fist pump is in postseason form.
will you look at that… a lefty getting out lefties
Yay! a 4 out inning!
Granderson, Cano, and you have to PH for Golson to end this unless Golson is in a bunt situation. PH Jones and go for the win.
Unbelievable. McClelland tries to give the game to the Sox and Laffey, of all people, shuts ‘em down.
LET’S SCORE SOME FUCKING RUNS
…or just one run.
Granderson, Cano and…Golson in this inning? PH for Golson with Jones please.
Well ESPN has Papelbum on the MLB page now….
Any bets on how long before the Pedroia false hustle dive into first is the lead picture on the page? (with some variation of “batttling”, “scrappy”, “never say die”)
This is amazing. Do you send out the guys with the swing for the fences on every pitch instructions?
A couple of years ago we would be on the third or fourth RAB Game Thread by now. There is progress in this world. Once in a while.
Gotta be Proctor in the 14th which means we gotta win now.
Isn’t this all somehow Cano’s fault? Didn’t he commit an error several days ago that led to this tie?
LOL.
It’s Swisher’s fault
Really, no one up in the Yankees bullpen? Why not let Noesi pitch?
Hell, if you’re just going to throw Laffey out there with 20+ pitches on his arm, you might as well give the ball to Brackman. At least he’ll be throwing 95 when he walks in the go ahead run.
Who’s starting tomorrow? Might be Noesi
Supposed to be Hughes I think, but Girardi is probably holding Noesi back just in case.
In any case, I can just about guarantee you that Laffey in his third inning of work is going to be a disaster. The rosters are expanded, you’ve got guys who you can use.
Great play by Pedroia. Unfortunately.
“the Red Sox little second baseman”
“A great play by the Red Soxs little second baseman”
Michael Kay, you’re awesome
Lost in all this is that they’re playing at around a 3:10 pace. Suck on that, Joe West.
Aaron you mean Betances right?
That would have been a routine play for Cano. No dive.
From SOSH:
How can the Yankees be watching this and not want us to win?
What is SOSH?
Sons of Sam Horn, a Red Sox forum.
I hope everyone realizes that it is now critical the Yankees win this game.
If not, I can see Peter Gammons now: “In a game that will be remembered for generations, the Red Sox were within outs of losing a double-header against their rivals. The gritty team fought back and took the game to extra-innings, beginning their march to the World Series…blah, blah, blah.”
Must, win, game.
This offense is
F-U-T-I-L-E
PINCH HIT!!!!!!!!!!!!
PH for golson with jones plea tony pena
Why would he even have bothered throwing a strike to Cano there?
WTF is Golson still doing there???
Tim Bogar has eyes like a peeping tom.
Come on, Joe. END THIS MADNESS.
Remember Girardi is not managing.
Come the fuck on…PH Jones.
Jones kills lefties. Why GOD why?
He’s a lefty, where the fuck is Jones?
Joe doesn’t want his old guys playing 2 games in a day when the game is mostly meaningless
Jones would just play a few innings.
depending on how long the game goes … not saying I agree with it, but that seems to be Girardi’s logic
It’s been months since he last played.
Golson walk off?
Well you can’t predict baseball…
Dude can’t even make contact
Where the fuck is Andrew Jones? It’s like they want to lose this game.
I think it’s now been four days now since Nova pitched, so he can come in for the next inning.
Swisher is better from the right side. Please just get on base somehow Golson.
Golson looks like he’s never picked up a bat in his life. So unnatural looking.
Girardi wants to rest his guys and in doing so he’ll fucking kill the bullpen.
And I don’t care that he walked.
Can Aaron Laffey be killed?
more importantly, is that a bad thing?
Girardi will spare his demise because he throws with his left hand.
Dude just walked Greg Golson
Walking Greg Golson LOL.
On a 3-2 curve no less (the guy throws 97mph!)
COME ON SWISH!!!!!!
End it, right now.
END THIS, SWISH!
Walking Golson is pretty much a sign that you’re finished. I can’t believe that Tito is going to let him pitch to Swisher.
No wonder my Sox fan friend calls him “Francoma”
Come on Swish.
i bet the Sox bring in Wakefield next
Please let it be Montero with the bases loaded!
Guys remember Girardi is not managing this game anymore
just a slightly naive comment
He’s not Bobby Valentine.
ejected managers pretty much always continue managing from the clubhouse or tunnel
Ugly game for Swisher so far. Hopefully this AB changes everything.
This is fantastic. If the Red Sox keep trying to win, they’ll weaken our bullpen for the Rays series. If they lose, they’ll drop into a tie with Tampa.
Good times all around.
do something Swisha
salty can’t get it straight because this pitcher is latin
It doesn’t have to be a home run, Swish. A base hit will do the job.
That was Greg Golson’s first career walk.
BRING IN A-ROD
Walkoff bunt single here….
Suicide squeeze please.
SQUEEZE!!!!
Damn, Swish. What a terrible game you’ve had. Please, if you don’t mind, I’d really appreciate it if you started hitting the Sox sometime in the (possibly) near and dear future.
Do not bunt. You cannot bunt. You don’t know how to bunt.
no jones?
I’ve given up hoping that they will PH, so all I’m doing is praying Gardy gets a hit.
Calling a Gardy walk, Montero walk off hit.
pinch hit damm, thanks for nothing swisher
How about have godson steal salty throw it into the centerfield bleachers and cano scores
2 strike bunt?
Screw bad management, this game isn’t being managed at all.
End this BG lol
If Gardy gets on base I’ll bet ten thousand dollars that Girardi pinch hits for Montero to blow our fucking minds.
Girardi got thrown out.
FUCKKKKKKKKK
FUck this team man
good lord…this is getting comical.
I’ve lost the will to live.
So you’ll keep watching the game?
Ugh. So much ugh.
Saltalawhatever’s legs must be fucking jello by now. He’s been back there almost all day.
13 innings of this…
fuck you giradri, just, the yanks are done hitting
Shit. Some of us have to work tomorrow, Brett.
they can play another ten innings and it won’t matter, they won’t score
So, again, worst extra-inning team in baseball? It’s seriously a shame too, considering the AAA/AA relievers have kept the team in the game. Can’t keep counting on the Sox to get outs.
The same pitch, at the same speed, over and over and over to Gardner. No adjustment whatsoever. You really have to wonder whether his defense is worth his terrible bat in a postseason game. Andruw Jones has really been hitting the ball well lately.
Hate to say it but this game reminds me of those extra inning affairs at Fenway in the 2004 playoffs that we lost. I never felt so empty to watch a baseball game for almost six hours to see my team lose.
On the other hand Scott Proctor is now in so this game will probably be ending shortly (I thought the same thing about Laffey and I was wrong but Scott has generally been dreadful – I do remember one exception.)
knew that was coming
The Yankees must have developed a severe allergic reaction to pie. I mean, Girardi’s got think about his guys right?
Is Laffey seriously still out there?
how the hell has JD Drew played this entire game? he’s coming out to get his leg amputated or something.
How are the red sox no teeing off on laughey’s “fast”(LOL)balls
Nooo!
NOOOO!
The fans are getting their money’s worth. A game and a half for the price of one. So far.
They are waiting until the 15th inning to bring in A-Rod for a walk-off homer like a couple of years ago against the BoSox in that 1-1 tie.
Did Noesi and Ayala both die?
Noesi is most likely starting one of the next couple games.
I have to assume that Noesi is going to get a start and that’s why he’s not in, but I have no idea why no Ayala.
I think Noesi will be starting tomorrow. Not sure about Ayala.
Oh god PLEASE NOT PROCTOR.
And this is the straw that breaks the camel’s back. Proctor is in.
The thing that galls me about this not pinch hitting thing is that Gardner played the first game, and Joe had no qualms about putting him in to pinch run and play, and now it’s been multiple innings. So why not PH Jones to end the madness? It’s not going to kill him to have 1 AB against a lefty.
I would have PH Jones for Golson, not Gardner. Gardner is younger and will probably not play tomorrow.
except if they don’t end it and the game goes 20+ innings Jones would have to be out there for a long time on a bad knee
Gardner’s younger than Jones, JEter and ARod.
and proctor’s coming in, the game is over
uh oh Proctor
Here we go, Proctor in to make sure we lose this one
Monteor suddenly is the only hitter I trust today to get a hit.
“Who is….John Proctor?” -Arthur Miller
right on cue….
and of course he comes in and gives up a hit..
Girardi must have sent a note from the clubhouse…
“Enough of this shit, time to catch the plane to Tampa, get Proctor in”
You must be right.
Text to Pena: “Already @ Chili’s and getting my 2nd beer. Said theyre closing the kitchen around midnight. Enjoy not having dinner. LOL.”
No doubles.
wow.
Don’t mind that with one out…. but why was he in ?
(does McDonald bunt a lot?)
Proctor does not inspire confidence.
C’mon – Double play Proctor.
well worse case scenario red sox are tired for the Os
SHIT
Shit.
Scott “white flag” Proctor
This shit is over.
this game over, pathetic display by this offense
See my comment at 9:37.
suckonmycockia
I still don’t get why they have Proctor on the team. Must be to lose games.
Proctor is the worst. Screw him.
Kontos? Ayala?
I understand holding Noesi back just in case… but what the hell?
How is Proctor not the last guy in out of the pen (save maybe Betances or Brackman)
Difference between Yankees and Sox in extra innings? The Sox will score.
man this is ridiculous
Had another heart attack
Can Proctor do the impossible and get one more out without allowing a run?
lmfao
Here comes the base hit/homer
Yep.
and here comes Ellsbury with the RBI
more like RBI’s…
well… great…
good fucking god, why the fuck is proctor on this team?
Why every team needs a “fuck it, I quit lets go home” guy
ellsbury…where the hell did this power come from?
I was hoping he’d walk him
Scott Proctor everyone.
Saw it coming FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK
color me surprised
LOL. Anyone really shocked?
aaaaaaaaand it doesn’t matter at all.
DFA
Fuck you Proctor and your lover Joe Girardi.
Too bad I couldn’t bet a $1 million on whether Proctor would give it up.
The Yankees gave this game away. Too Bad. But they could afford to do that.
Good thing we called up Proctor. Such a great September call up.
I want to remind everyone this game was started by JOHN LACKEY. The fact we’re in the 14th inning is mind blowing.
Naturally.
Sorry Tampa.
Red Sox are going to the postseason.
Yup. THere’s your MVP right there. Thanks a lot, Girardi, you fucking shit stain.
Shut up. Honestly you’re nitpicking.
“YEAH! It took us 14 innings to beat a team that was resting half of their starters! Eric Ortiz was RIGHT!”
thats the mvp, giradri can go to fucking hell, gutless performance
what did girardi do
MVP MVP MVP. Can’t wait for the 10 page Peter Gammons article talking about the greatness of Ellsbury and how his homer SAVED the season.
They are still losing 2 of 3 to the Orioles, but whatever.
Who saw that coming?
Proctor might be the WORST pitcher in the ENTIRE bullpen. No excuse for bringing him in to pitch in this spot.
NO EXCUSE.
This is not a meaningless game for the Yankees. If you let Boston into the playoffs because of tonight’s game, you may really come to regret it.
There were a ton of other pitchers available, all of whom had far more upside than Scott Proctor. This game doesn’t do anything to the Yankees in the short term, but they will certainly regret it if Boston makes it into the playoffs and flips the switch.
Exactly. This game was a lot more important than some of these folks are implying.
It really isn’t, and it isn’t more important than resting key players.
Girardi wasn’t resting key players. Cano, Granderson, and Swisher were out there all night, and he used the majority of his top relief pitchers, some of whom had already pitched yesterday.
There’s 9 typical Yankees starters not 3
Neither team really deserved to win this game. So what. Their pitching is fried.
what the fuck was girardi thinking?! Get this fucking bum off the team NOW! He can’t do anything right. Feels like girardi threw up the white flag and is surrendering the game. Not a nice way to have your last home game of the regular season.
I hope scott proctor blows his arm out again…this time for good.
WE DID NOT NEED TO WIN THIS GAME
As usual, you just don’t get it. This game could decide whether Boston makes the playoffs or not. That is HUGE for the Yankees, since Boston is the next best team in the league.
the rangers might have something to say about that
And the Tigers.
A September collapse doesn’t erase what happened the entire rest of the season. Detroit had one hot stretch in which they won 12 games in a row. Other than that they have been mediocre.
Boston is the best team in the league that isn’t the Yankees. Don’t let their recent performance fool you. Going on the basis of record without any sense of the context is incredibly misleading.
This game could decide whether Boston makes the playoffs or not.
You’re the one that doesn’t get it. This game decides nothing because they still have three games left in the season.
Stop twisting my words. I didn’t say that this game would put them into the playoffs or eliminate them from contention. I said that this game COULD DECIDE if they make it or not, and that is definitely true.
Considering that the teams are separated by only one game, winning and losing this game could be the difference between Boston having to play a one game playoff and being in, or between missing entirely and playing a one game playoff, etc.
Nobody knows what will happen next, but you can control the outcome of tonight’s game still. Unless the Yankees sweep the Rays and Boston sweeps the Orioles, it was very likely that this game would make a difference.
We have Ayala, Noesi, Robertson (technically), hell even Brackman in the bullpen, in this vital game for our most hated rival, which weve invested so much in, and they fucking send Proctor out there after his shitfest on Thursday? As punishment, Proctor has to pitch all 27 innings against Tampa
As punishment, Proctor has to pitch all 27 innings against Tampa
Signed,
Joe Torre
No sense using Robertson twice in a day at this point in the season. Noesi will probably be starting one of the next couple games. I don’t get why he wouldn’t use Ayala or Kontos though. Maybe he did just want to get the game over with?
Proctor is the worst pitcher in the bullpen. What excuse does he have for using him other than that he is a “veteran” (albeit a terrible one)?
He doesn’t want to throw Brackman into the fire? When does he plan on ever using these guys then? If this game meant so little to him that he brought in Proctor to begin with, what is the harm? He wouldn’t use those guys unless there is a 10 run blowout in the other team’s favor, which is asinine.
did I not say why not Ayala or Kontos? I agree Proctor is the worst pitcher in the bullpen. That’s why I added the last line.
As for Brackman or Bettances, who’s starting tomorrow? I’m guessing it might be Noesi for a few and then they would possibly need length from the B’s as well. I honestly think Proctor was just waving the white flag to get the guys who played all day off the field.
I would sign up for this.
The game is meaningless, but it’s just ridiculous that Proctor is considered to be a better pitching option than Swisher…or most of the fans in the ballpark.
Everyone realizes Girardi was ejected, right?
Clearly they don’t.
you realize that doesn’t mean bringing in Proctor wasn’t his decision right?
Everyone realizes when a manager is ejected he’s still typically making the decision remotely, right?
This.
No shitting, if I got that Proctor pitch 10 times, I hit it out atleast once.
Well at least we took them to 14. Sox will be tired for tomorrow’s game with the Os. We just have to go out there and lose. Surely Girardi can manage that.
F-cking stupid game. You have Arod, Jeter, Andruw and Posada sitting on the bench and you keep giving AB’s to Romine, Golson, Pena Etc. Could’ve really hurt the red sox.
I don’t care if they go 0 for September. If they’re in the playoffs they’ll be dangerous. Didn’t even try to win the game.
And the Rays won’t be dangerous? This game would have been nice to win and shove in the Red Sox faces, but at the cost of tired regulars 5 days before the postseason?
This is completely wrong. The Yankees had plenty of chances to use those guys for just one AB, while they still had options on the bench to replace them in the field afterwards. They could have moved Montero behind the plate and given up the DH. They could have waited to pinch run for guys until they got to 2B, instead of burning through the bench right away.
Girardi overmanaged, even in a game that he claimed wasn’t very important, and unsurprisingly it ended up costing him the game that in the end he had actually expended quite a lot of effort to try to grab.
running out of guys isn’t the best time to give up the DH. And he didn’t want the vets who played the first game to play multiple innings. There really weren’t many chances to use those guys for just one AB.
Yes, there were. He had an incredible chance to use A-Rod in the 9th inning with Romine up against Papelbon, instead of Romine who has been somewhat overmatched against big league pitching.
If you lose the DH, then guess what? You have chance after chance to use those guys for one AB because they will be replaced by a pitcher anyway. A pitcher can just go up there and bunt if need be, or stand there and take 3 strikes down the middle.
There were chances, and they were wasted with lesser players and an insane number of pinch running moves.
give me the team that can’t hit over the team who can put up 10 runs in a heartbeat. The Sox are slumping but they are still the most dangerous lineup in baseball. The team should have crushed on the Sox throat because they are too dangerous too let into the post.
Red Sox might have a better lineup than the Rays, but the Rays have some very mean pitching. Anything can happen in a short series and there is no way of knowing who will beat who, but we’re surely feel like idiots if we force the Rays to the playoffs, only to be beat by Shields, Price, and Hellickson in the ALCS.
Posada was already used. As for the others, beating the Red Sox would have been nice, but the Yankees first priority right now is getting everyone healthy, rested, and ready for the playoffs.
Gotta love all of these irrational fans posting on this site.
At least it wasn’t a 1 run loss.
To be fair, the Yanks need to use Proctor against Tampa Bay now.
That’s the last time Proctor pitches for us, right?
I heard he’s starting against the rays the next 3 days.
The Chicago Bears didn’t have to win the game vs the Green Bay Packers in week 17 last season just as the Yanks didn’t have to win this one. The Bears didn’t win and then the Packers got hot and defeated them for the right to go to the championship. This could be similar, I sure hope not.
This day started great but it sure didn’t end that way. Earlier today the Yanks win, BoSox lose, Rays win, Giants win and Patriots lose.
Later – not so good – Yanks lose, BoSox win, Jets lose.
So Ellsbury won the MVP tonight, right?
Now I’m actually hoping Verlander gets the MVP. Sheesh.
Think of it this way, he is represented by Boras and still isn’t under a long-term contract. Makes me feel better.
Can we get a urine test on Ellsbury? Ridiculous.
Tonight’s game is a prime example of why you wanted to bury Boston while you still had a chance.
They can be incredibly dangerous in the postseason even if they aren’t playing that well, for the same reasons that they won tonight’s game. Very high upside in the bullpen, and guys that can come up with big extra base hits in the late innings.
This game was not meaningless, not even for the Yankees. If you beat Boston here, they might not make the playoffs. The pressure is entirely on them, while you rest players in Tampa to get ready for the postseason. Now, you either have to sit the entire team or expect to see Boston playing October baseball. They really blew it.
You’ve said the same fucking thing 4 times. I think we get your point.
So you’d rather play the Rays than Red Sox right now? You never want to pick your opponent, especially at the expense of hurting a team that is playing meaningless games.
Tampa is the inferior team, regardless of what the recent numbers show. I’m not picking my opponent, when did I do that? I’m pointing out that because Boston is in fact the next best team in the league (and they ARE, stop letting a small sample of games fool you when they have that roster), it would be best for the Yankees to have them already out of the playoffs before they even started.
You have no idea how any team would do against the Yankees in a 7 game series. Rays have the pitching to kill the Yankees and the Red Sox have the bats to kill the Yankees. The fact is that you’d rather play the Rays than the Red Sox, which is not something you want to do when you end up getting your ass kicked by some awesome starting pitching. Its possible that the Red Sox keep this slump up, and get beat in the ALDS too.
I never said that I’d rather they play one team over the other. I’m saying which team I think is the better overall team, and that is definitely Boston. Anything can happen in a playoff series, but that’s not the point. It’s better to have a weaker set of teams in the playoffs than a stronger set of teams. That’s common sense, which seems to have eluded some of you guys.
is 159 games a small sample?? OK
Is 6-18 a large sample? Because besides that, the Red Sox have been neck and neck with the Yankees for the entire season, and far better than Detroit, which has not been tearing it up outside of that recent 12 game winning streak against mediocre Central clubs.
6-18 is part of the 159. They all count. 159 games is more than 24 games. Over 159 games, the Yankees, Tigers, and Rangers have been better than the Sox.
Because a total September collapse and one winning streak are more indicative of a team’s performance than the other 130 or so games?
Also, you are trying to compare records when the teams play an unbalanced schedule? Do you realize how ridiculous that is? Detroit is 47-22 against their garbage division, and Texas is 37-17 against theirs, which has only 1 good team out of 3. The Red Sox are playing in a division with 4 teams over .500, despite playing each other 18-19 times a piece.
Oh please. Boston could barely pull off a win with their A-team vs the Yankees’ B- team. They couldn’t score off Aaron freaking Laffey. It took Scott Proctor to get on the mound for their lifeless team to have any chance whatsoever.
Of course, ESPN will now be proclaiming them the comeback team of the decade.
Which means absolutely nothing if they back into October and get hot.
Boston and Tampa are both playing inconsistent baseball right now (Tampa has been mediocre against everyone except Boston). Which team do you think has the better chance of getting it going in October? If you can answer that question, then you will see why what you said is not correct.
Either team can get it going in the postseason. It’s not the Yankees job to keep a team out of the playoffs when they might not even face them.
Good news…. there is no f’n way Proctor is making the postseason roster (in the event Girardi was toying with it)
Bad news…. this probably has Girardi thinking about Laffey as a possible 2nd LOOGY option.
Valdes before Laffey – Valdes has been somewhat better.
Texas and Detroit are more righty dominated than lefty so not sure he would want 2 lefties against those teams. Now if Boston or Philly, yes.
The Yankees obviously didn’t go for the jugular here — Scott Proctor’s presence, and passing on innumerable opportunities to pinch hit made that clear. On the other hand, they essentially handed a win to Tampa on Thursday, so it wouldn’t have been exactly fair to have gone all out here.
The only thing that honestly troubles me about the game is that it feeds into the “if extra innings come, the team falls dead” theme.
All the nostalgia about Proctor coming back sure wore off quickly.
As soon as Ellsbury came up, you knew the lead was over, it was just a matter of how many runs. I’ll say this, I give the MVP to Ellsbury after today.
I don’t even care much for the Rays to get in, since I think the Sox have weaknesses as well, but I really wanted to see them collapse, just because they were the Sox. Thanks a lot Proctor. Also didn’t get why Jones didn’t hit for Golson against Morales.
another extra inning game that ended up as a waste of my time.
i know that it was a meaningless game for us. but i hate that we let those guys off the hook.
what’s this tiring the veterans business? how much does a ph appearance hurt a-rod’s knee, back, hip, whatever the hell’s bothering him.
he would have to stay in the game, they only had veterans left on the bench, and they have no idea how many innings the game may last. Just playing it safe
The reporters always seem to ask shitty questions.
So Hughes is in the bullpen. Sigh.
Not surprised to yell you the truth.
Tell*
Before today, sweeping doubleheader from Sox (when we are resting people) and then Tampa also winning its game would have been perfect but really difficult to say it would actually happen.
Unfortunately we came so close but could not pull it off. (Hard to win when you get six hits in 14 innings (I am sick of scoring runs off Lackey but then letting him off hook.)
One thing this game did – not sure whether Ellsbury will win MVP (this game certainly helps his candidacy) but definitely hope they stop talking about Adrian Gonzalez. Hitting 3 homers in a doubleheader at Yankee Stadium is pretty impressive.
Only thing I can hopfor is that Beckett falters and Bosox bullpen is short tomorrow.
I can’t see us putting in a great offensive performance against Tampa tomorrow after today’s long day. So maybe Sox lose and Tampa wins.
I am rooting for a tie so game 163 has to be played – probably best that can be hoped for at this point.
Once again, Girardi gets burned in an extra inning game. This time, he half-played for the win in the 9th and left Romine in there with the basses loaded and 2 outs. You have to pinch-hit there. Instead, the kid is understandably overmatched and he strikes out, and the game goes 14 innings. The bullpen is taxed tremendously, especially considering that they played 2 games today. Who know’s who will be available tomorrow. And the offense looked pathetic once again in an extra-inning game, and most of the game overall. 2 hits over 11 innings? Awful. And everyone is going to attack me and say “you’re nitpicking” or “this was a meaningless game” which is true standings-wise, but if you’re gonna play for 5 hours against your rivals that you’re trying to knock out of the playoffs, using your entire bullpen, you might as well win. Very disappointing game.
who cares who is available tomorrow? Let Brackman and Bettances pitch, the game means absolutely nothing to the Yankees
Couldn’t have said it better myself.
It’s always a contradiction with Girardi. He’ll claim the game wasn’t important enough to use his guys, yet he pinch ran for his key players already in the game to try to go for the win. He brought in all of his ace relievers other than Robertson, who had already pitched in the first game.
If he isn’t trying to win, then he can at least get the players rest. Once again, he burned through his roster and accomplished nothing in the process because of his inconsistent style.
He brought in his good relievers because Soriano and Mo hadn’t pitched since Wednesday.
Yet, Ayala is left sitting in the pen while Proctor comes in to serve it up, despite already having used three pitchers who went yesterday in the game.
Pinch running for guys, going for the win, but then leaving A-Rod sitting on the bench when he had a chance to PH him without having to play him in the field.
Ayala is not an A guy and probably won’t even be on the roster. He also used only two pitchers that had been used yesterday- Wade and Valdez.
There is no way you can PH ARod guaranteeing he won’t play the field unless he PHs for Montero, because you don’t KNOW that he’s going to end the game.
Girardi could’ve pinch-hit Jeter in the 9th and let him play short and moved Nunez over to 3rd.
But he clearly didn’t want his regulars playing in a meaningless game. You don’t know that Jeter will win the game if he pinch hits.
He has a much better chance than Romine, and if Jeter didn’t get a hit you could still have Pena in the field rather than Jeter if you wanted.
Then who would catch? No way it’s Martin. No way it’s Jesus. And Pena had already pinch run for Posada.
I wouldn’t have had a huge problem with using Martin if Jeter didn’t get a hit. It’s something that would be nice to avoid but there’s a good chance he doesn’t even have to play the field if you pinch hit Jeter or A-Rod there, they both have had decent success against Papelbon.
So you would rather have Romine hit than have to put Montero behind the plate for a few innings, with a small chance of the game ending with you winning before that even happens?
I’m glad you’re not the manager. You would be like Joe Torre, sleeping on the dugout bench and then pulling your moves out of a hat based on incorrect preconceptions.
And another thing, why did Joe put Pena in to pinch run for Posada? He wasn’t even the winning run. He was on first base and his run was useless.
I agree about Pena. But I’d much rather rest the regulars for the playoffs than try to win a meaningless regular season game.
Ayala has allowed 1 hit in 8.1 IP in September. He’s been one of their best relievers of late.
Also, Logan threw 2/3 of an inning yesterday, so that is three. Don’t correct me if you are too lazy to even check your own statement.
You could have easily PH A-Rod in that game. Again, if you have no sense of what was going on in the game, please abstain from attacking my posts. He PH Posada for Laird while he still had both A-Rod and Pena on the bench. He could have moved Montero from DH to C if he wanted to PH for Romine in the 9th inning.
Time and time again, you criticize my posts without even a basic knowledge of what unfolded in the game. Amazing that you have the audacity to attack me when you have clearly not been watching the games very attentively.
Ayala has been in mostly low leverage work this month. I can remember him coming on with the bases loaded in Toronto and giving up a scalding liner to center that was caught.
Girardi PH Posada for Laird because Posada was the DH in the first game. There’s a BIG difference between DHing and playing the field, like Jeter and ARod did. I’m sorry, but you can’t expect a manager like Girardi to send veterans out to play the field for 2 games in one day.
btw, where were you when they clinched the playoffs? Where were you when they clinched the division? Where were you when they beat up on the Red Sox this afternoon and last night? You only show up in games like this, or when something goes wrong. And then you wonder why many people don’t take you seriously.
Ayala has not been used in mostly low leverage work, what are you talking about? In 6 of his 10 appearances in September, he’s had an average LI of 1.76 or higher, with 2 holds and a well deserved win against TB.
Once again, you criticize without knowing the situation. He left Romine in to bat for himself with the bases loaded and 2 outs in the 9th inning. He had a catcher already in the game at DH, who had not played in the first game and had not played in the field since Thursday night. A-Rod would not have had to play the field if he was used, because Pena was already in the game, and Montero would have been moved behind the plate.
Stop trying to use the “wahh you don’t post every night” argument to deflect attention from the blatant mistakes in your posts. You muddle the facts consistently, and then attack people on the basis of this incorrect knowledge. I’m surprised that any takes YOU seriously anymore.
You are putting too much stock into a meaningless regular season game. Girardi didn’t manage the way you wanted to? Who fcking cares? Resting the players for the playoffs >>>>> winning this game.
Also not to get too cocky here, but I bet people here take me more seriously than they do you.
You are once again trying to deflect from all of the ways in which you were proven wrong in this thread.
If you can’t man up and admit your obvious mistakes, then there is no way that anyone is going to be taking you seriously right now.
You can certainly dish it out, but when the heat is on, you make excuse after excuse.
And also, stop equating using A-Rod for one PH at bat with playing in the field. HE WOULD NOT HAVE HAD TO PLAY THE FIELD IF GIRARDI USED HIM IN THE RIGHT SPOT.
All you do is make up excuses. If you are wrong, then “it doesn’t matter” and people are “trolls.” Amazing that you think you are better than others on this blog, when you can’t even get simple facts straight in your own posts.
That’s the most frustrating part about it for me. Just be consistent.
I know it’s meaningless too and Girardi said he didn’t want to risk injury to Jeter, ARod and Jones. But it wasa still disappointing.
I pray the Yankees don’t see extra innings in the postseason.
I also agree with you. As long as you’re playing a team in contention, the game is not meaningless. I’m not playing the “I’d rather see this team or that team in the playoffs game.” But, I am going with the “I don’t want the Red Sox having even a remote chance of getting to the World Series” game.
Totally agree – my problem is that by trying to still rest people even from pinch hitting I think he extended the game. No guarantee that Jones or Arod pinch hit would win game but at least try.
If he really wanted to rest people would not have used Soriano and Mo and half the regularsto start. Line-up was better than Thursday Tampa’s line-up.
We as fans see value from knocking Boston out but Joe apparently does not. I don’t like Boston because we do not pound their crappy pitchers like everybody else does. Lackey has started 4 games against us and I believe Boston has won three of them. Our two best pichers (CC and Nova) also seem to give up a lot of baserunners to them.
Best thing about weekend was pounding Lester and Garcia’s performance.
Russel Martin seems to be very enthusiastic about potentially knocking Boston out of the playoffs, and I’m pretty sure he’s not the only one in the clubhouse that feels that way.
Great point about Lackey. He’s been their Burnett, yet he shut down the Yankees pretty effectively. After the afternoon win, I fully expected, half-empty lineup or not, that Lackey would be gone by the fourth at least.
Also, on the point of starting pitching, don’t forget that Garcia will likely get a start if the Yanks face them in the ALCS. Outside of Saturday, Boston has lit him up pretty well. I think his success Saturday was thanks to a big early deficit and Boston batters pressing.
I love how everyone is assuming that Boston’s in the playoffs. Did you not watch the game? They won because Proctor was brought in. They couldn’t buy a hit with RISP. I mean even Aaron Laffey shut them down. The Red Sox will make the playoffs when their magic number is zero.
Tampa will most likely have to sweep to have a good chance, though.
I want proctor starting and throwing 150 pitches against tampa tomorrow.
I guess this puts to rest all those rumors about Scott Procter still being alive. Really, how silly.
I hope the yanks don’t have no extra inning games in the post season
Yankees took 2 out of 3 from the Red Sox, in a series the Sox needed to win. Girardi did well.
+28
The Yankees did well.
Girardi doing well is highly subjective and nearly impossible to measure.
Not sure when/how Proctor jumped Ayala in the bullpen pecking order… Ayala is not lights out but he’s been here all year and had 50 appearances. Proctor has been here for a cup of coffee (and has spilled most of that coffee) and yet somehow gets in the game before Ayala.
I’d also put Kontos ahead of Proctor, but that’s at least debatable; unless Ayala was injured or had something bothering him early in the day, I can see no reason to bring in Proctor ahead of Ayala
So since Hughes goes to the bullpen and Noesi starts tomorrow while Colon goes Tuesday, who goes Wednesday? Of course Girardi doesn’t know. You can’t have Nova or Burnett go on Wednesday because they’d be going on two days rest, among other reasons they wouldn’t do that. And they can’t go with Garcia on Wednesday because he’d be going on three days rest, and off course CC is off limits as well. So who the hell will start Wednesday?
Honestly, I think Betances.
I’d love that.
I imagine its a goof-around game. Start Kontos or someone and let everyone not headed to the postseason go 25 pitches. One of those things you don’t announce ahead of time so Boston/Anaheim can’t whine ahead of time.
I don’t think Girardi cares. I believe as long as the games matter, a team in the Yankees position should put a representative team on the field. However, if it’s going to screw with your playoff rotation or any other aspect of the roster, you do what’s best for your own team. In other words, I don’t think the Yankees will or should go out of their way to make sure a regular pitcher faces Tampa on Wednesday if that game means anything. If it comes to that, Boston can shut up and blame themselves for letting their lead get away. There are plenty of September moments this year that they can blame and most of them are their own doing.
This is the real reason the Yankees lost tonight (this morning): http://riveraveblues.com/2011/.....nt-2901595
