Yankees beat Rays to claim AL East title

By

Step two: complete. For the first time since 2009 and the 11th time in the last 14 years, the Yankees are AL East Champs. Wednesday night’s win over Tampa combined with the Red Sox’s loss to the Orioles gave the Yankees a division title that a whole lotta people figured they had no chance to win six or so months ago. Drink it in, division titles always go down smooth.

This is impossible. I was told the Red Sox had the division locked down in June.

  2. Jorge says:

All of you Hesters who trolled the entire year can line up and kiss the rest of our asses now.

Onto the playoffs. #28 is coming home.

  3. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

How sweet is it that this game was on ESPN, on the same day that the ESPN All Boston magazine came out?

  4. Craig says:

    ESPN sucks

  5. Kostas says:

I believe it is time to say to all Sox fans, SUCK IT!!!! THE GREATEST TEAM EVER CREATED HAS CHOKED AND BEEN DOMINATED BY THE REAL GREATEST TEAM – NY YANKEES!!!!!!!!!

  10. jackstrawelf says:

I like it, I can’t find a sox fan anywhere! Some “nation”. Go yankees!!

  11. JAG says:

This was a particularly great game because it wouldn’t have even been that bad to lose it. Losing would have put the Rays within 1 of Boston and made really real the possibility of the Red Sox getting swept out of the postseason. As it is, it’s still possible, but a lot harder. Here’s hoping to see the full playoff lineup vs. Boston this weekend and no more than 2 regular starters against Tampa afterwards.

  12. Rey22 says:

Wait aren’t we still a couple of games back of the Red Sox? Don’t you guys know they’re a lock for 100+ wins and are possibly the greatest team in baseball history?

  13. Rainbow Connection says:

It is shocking that a team that spent over $200 million made the playoffs!!!!

    • Rich in NJ says:

      Whining is so unbecoming.

    • swishers fauxhawk says:

The $160 million dollar team a few hours away would love that confidence.

    • dexcente says:

There are two parts of every season for a Yankee fan: first is the “Yankees are overrated and here’s proof” part of the season, then the inevitable “Not Fair!” part of the season. Maybe you can imagine why the inevitability of the latter makes the former so perversely enjoyable.

    • Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    • Chen Meng Wang says:

Your teams owner has that kind of money to spend, it’s not our fault they’d rather make a profit than win games. I’m pretty sure The Stienbrenners have lost money just about every year they’ve owned the team.

      • Tom Zig says:

I’m pretty sure The Stienbrenners have lost money just about every year they’ve owned the team

I don’t know how accurate that is.

        • CP says:

In actual dollars, they probably made money most years.

In accounting dollars, they probably lost a ton of money.

        • Chen Meng Wang says:

Idk, I read it somewhere a couple years ago. Before the new stadium opened obviously, that place has money printing machines in the basement.

        • Tom O says:

It’s probably pretty close. Most guys who’ve looked at this estimate that the actual team runs around the break-even point. That’s not including revenue from YES network, and any other sources though, just the team and it’s own revenue. In any case though, it’s a known fact that teams like the Marlins take in money from their teams profit and from revenue sharing, and sit on it instead of investing in the on field product.

          • Chen Meng Wang says:

Weren’t the Marlins pressured by MLB to spend more money(and sign Josh Johnson in specific)? If I’m remembering this correctly I feel bad for Johnson, He’ll probably never get to pitch on a really competitive team.

        • Jesse says:

I actually heard that they lose money every year.

          • Chen Meng Wang says:

From what I remember Tom O is right, the team itself breaks even or loses money but that doesn’t take into account money the Stienbrenners make from the Yes Network and other parts of Yankees Enterprises INC.

          • Mike Axisa says:

They do and they don’t. The Yankees baseball club has higher operating expenses than revenue generated, and therefore loses money. Yankee Global Enterprises rakes in mad cash every year though.

            • mbonzo says:

Not to mention the $1.69 billion of growth they’ve seen in their investment of the team. Not that I don’t appreciate their business strategy, its brilliant, but lets not pretend like the Steinbrenners would do anything that hurt them personally.

              • Chen Meng Wang says:

Idk about the kids, but I think that George would have lost money to insure a WS title…but George was batshit insane sometimes so yeah.

  24. Rich in NJ says:

Kim Jones comparing Posada’s “moment” to Jeter’s 3000th hit and Mo’s 602nd save “moments.” is goofy.

  25. duzzi23 says:

Cant wait to see how ESPN spins this into the red sox slump being the only reason the yankees won the east. Congrats I’m glad we didn’t play for the wild card and wave the white flag like Girardi did last september.

    • FIPster Doofus says:

With the injuries to Dice-K, Buchholz, Bedard and Youkilis, the Red Sox are showing how courageous and determined they are just to be leading the wild card. Their example is one we can all learn from, and we as a nation – no, a world – can only strive to someday be half as wonderful as this incredible franchise known as the Boston Red Sox.

      Regards,

      ESPN

  26. Jesse says:

I’m writing the recap for my blog I write for, so is the Magic Number to clinch Home Field Advantage down to 3?

  27. jv says:

so are the yankees likely to play the tigers in the ALDS?

  28. Chen Meng Wang says:

    Roster for ALDS:

    Line Up:
    SS Jeter
    CF Granderson
    1B Teixeira
    3B A-Rod
    2B Cano
    RF Swisher
    DH Montero/Chavez
    C Martin
    LF Gardner

    Bench:
    Montero/Chavez
    Jones
    Dickerson
    Romine/Cervelli
    Posada

    Starting Rotation:
    LHP Sabathia
    RHP Nova
    RHP Colon
    RHP Garcia

    Bullpen:
    RHP: Hughes/Noesi/Burnett
    RHP: Wade
    LHP: Logan
    LHP: Laffey/RHP: Ayala
    RHP: Soriano
    RHP: Robertson
    RHP: Rivera

    • mbonzo says:

Take out Dickerson, add another arm in the bullpen, most likely AJ. Then you’re set.

      • mbonzo says:

Oh wait, I’d also replace Nunez with Cervelli/Romine. Remember that Martin should be able to catch all these games, and it’d be in an emergency that Montero/Posada would end up catching. Nunez gives you speed and an emergency infielder.

        • Chen Meng Wang says:

shit…how’d i forget Nunez…I’d replace Dickerson with him and leave the back-up catcher. God forbid Martin gets injured and he has to be replaced on the roster he’s not elligible for the next round.

  29. pat says:

    Tomorrow’s starters?

    1B-Swish
    2B- Pena
    SS-Nunez
    3B-Laird
    RF- Dickerson
    CF-Golson
    LF-Jones
    DH-Montero

  30. pat says:

And LOL at the 1 pitch win for Robertson.

  31. Bartolo's Colon says:

awesome! im going to tomorrows game as well as fridays, can’t wait to see a aaa lineup tomorrow and hopefully betances at some point. i hope they put out a decent lineup on friday so they can get a win and hopefully fuck red sox nation for the weekend

i remember the july 8 game was rained out and i was so pissed bc of jeters potential 3000 hit, i am fine now going to the makeup tomorrow, who would have known that it means nothing to the yanks and everything to the sox

  32. MikeD says:

I enjoy coming back after a Yankee win and reviewing the postings from the ledge jumpers, Yankee haters, or generally pathetic Yankee fans.

I was going to post a few links to the worst offenders, but it seemed like whomever Montero Mojo is he wants to own the crown. He’s pathetic. He’s own 90% of the links, so no need.

Beyond that, the Montero love and Jorge hate is odd. Montero has looked horrible of late, and has done nothing to deserve Yankees’ fans love, meanwhile people were pounding on Posada, who is one of the ten greatest Yankees ever, and delivered yet another big hit for the Yankees. You all should be embarassed.

    Congrats Jorge; Congrats Yankees.

  33. Riddering says:

Not as though there’s any Yankee team I’m not fond of but seeing the underappreciated Colon, Garcia, Nova and Granderson turn it on for most of the year has made this one very fun. Now let’s watch them slaughter the rest of baseball in the playoffs.
