Yanks still trying to bring NHL’s Winter Classic to Yankee Stadium

Yankee Stadium hosted its third college football game this weekend, as Rutgers beat Army by a score of 27-12 on Saturday. While at the game, Mark Herrmann asked Lonn Trost about possible future non-baseball sporting events at Yankee Stadium, to which the team’s CEO responded “Hopefully, we’ll have hockey here.”

The Yankees tried to bring the NHL’s annual Winter Classic to the Bronx three years ago, but conflicts with other events at the Stadium prevented it from happening. The Rangers are playing in this year’s outdoor exhibition, but it will be played at Citizen’s Bank Park in Philadelphia on New Years’ Day. There are rumblings that the 2013 Winter Classic will played at Michigan Stadium on the campus of the University of Michigan, so Trost might not get his wish until 2014 at the earliest. Whenever the Yankees do get the game, I will totally be there.

I could be wrong here, but it sure seems like there are a lot less non baseball events at the stadium than they were talking before it opened. Could it be a tough sell to get people to the Bronx for a non Yankees event?

I as currently no longer work or live in NYC I have no reason to go to the Boogie Down BX except to see a Yanks game. No way in hell I would make the trek otherwise. If they had put the new stadium right off the jersey turnpike like George was threatening, I would be there a lot more. I am glad they did not, but I would be there more.

I know it’s a hard sell, but it always seems the WC involves the Flyers, Capitals or Penguins. Just once, I’d like to see my Devils there.

The major problem it seems with the Winter Classic as the new Stadium is the date. January 1/2 is only a few days from the Dec 30th Pinstripe Bowl. Seems enough time wouldn’t be available to convert everything over.

Unless they move that bowl game to the beginning of the Bowl Season in Mid December, or they eliminate the bowl game entirely, then it seems they won’t be able to have an outdoor game.

  4. I was bullshit that they didn’t play a game in the old stadium after the 2008 season.

I don’t like the Pinstripe Bowl… 1 Hockey game outside every 4 years would be so much cooler than an advertisement bowl….

The WC needs to be out west or in Canada next year. East coast has had a lock on it and the NHL can’t afford to alienate the rest of the country.

The Yanks had a deal in place for the WC in 08 but backed out after saying that the last event should be the Yankee game and not another sporting event. The WC will likely end up at Citi field with the Rangers and Islanders. The Devils would not get a shot. I don’t see why they can’t do it in Metlife Stadium. 85 thousand hockey fans for Rangers vs. Bruins…
