Mitchell nearly goes the distance in AAA win

Game 12: For Those About To Hi-rok
Update: Yankees place Brett Gardner on DL

Triple-A Empire State (2-0 win over Rochester)
LF Ray Kruml: 1-4, 1 K
SS Doug Bernier, DH Jack Cust, 3B Kevin Russo, RF Colin Curtis & C Craig Tatum: all 0-3 — Bernier, Russo, Curtis, and Tatum all struck out once
CF Dewayne Wise: 2-3, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 K — missed a few games because he was banged up, and he comes back mashing like he never left
1B Steve Pearce: 2-3, 2 RBI
2B Ramiro Pena: 1-3, 1 R, 1 K
RHP D.J. Mitchell: 8 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 K, 6/5 GB/FB — 60 of 86 pitches were strikes (69.8%), also picked a runner off first … retired the last eleven men he faced … I’m surprised they didn’t let him finish this one off, you don’t see too many CG SO in the minors
RHP Kevin Whelan: 1 IP, zeroes, 1 K, 2/0 GB/FB — seven of 11 pitches were strikes

Double-A Trenton (7-1 win over Erie)
RF Abe Almonte & 3B Ronnie Mustelier: both 2-4, 1 BB — Almonte drove in a run, struck out twice, and got caught stealing … Mustelier stole a base and came around to score
DH Zoilo Almonte: 1-5, 1 RBI, 1 K – 17 K in 53 PA (32.1%)
LF Cody Johnson: 1-4, 1 R, 1 BB
CF Melky Mesa: 1-4, 2 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 SB — ended the game with a walk-off outfield assist
C Jose Gil & 1B Luke Murton: both 1-4 — Gil drove in a run … Murton scored
2B Kevin Mahoney: 0-2, 1 R, 2 BB
SS Walt Ibarra: 0-4, 1 R
RHP Cory Arbiso: 4.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HB, 6/3 GB/FB — 44 of 73 pitches were strikes (60.3%)
RHP Ryan Pope: 2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 2/0 GB/FB — 28 of 41 pitches were strikes (68.3%)
RHP Kelvin Castro: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 0/4 GB/FB — just 12 of 23 pitches were strikes (52.2%)

Low-A Charleston‘s game was cancelled due to rain and will not be made up because they don’t play Augusta again in the first half. High-A Tampa had a scheduled off day.

Hopefully the Mitchells will be split up from now on to reduce confusion. Two Mitchells and two Rangers all on the same night? It’s almost too much too handle.

    • Gonzo

What about two Almontes in the same lineup?

      • Plank

        Brain: Exploded

        • Havok9120

          Like a blood sausage?

          Who gets the reference?

  • BigGuy

DJ was outstanding tonight. He faced only 1 man over the limit. The 2 hits were wiped out by a DP and the picked the runner off on the 2nd hit. His 2nd outstanding start of his 3 he’s made.

  • Plank

I asked this in the game thread, but it’s more fitting here.

When do you think Cito Culver will drop switch hitting?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Not for a while. He hasn’t even played a full year yet, and they waited a while before having Nunez give up switch-hitting.

    • Gonzo

Just to spite Keith Law, never.

  • Plank

A’s prospect Miles Head looks like a giant baby. Appearance, not personality.

  • Donny

I think I am just as disappointed with a River Dogs rainout as I would be with a big league rainout.

    Gotta manage to the save…

  • YankeeSooner

Think Wise makes it to Fenway? Nunez in that funky OF makes me cringe– almost as much as Ibanez, and to be honest Andruw had some Manny-like moments tonight…

  • Greg

Hughes to AAA, Phelps to the rotation, Mitchell to the long man?

  • Smallz

If Charleston’s games were broadcasted I’d be watching all of them
