Game 58: Win It For Brett
ByThe Yankees got some more bad news about Brett Gardner and his sprained right elbow today as his latest minor league rehab game resulted in more pain. He’s headed to the doctor on Monday and Joe Girardi said he doesn’t expect him back until after the All-Star break. Gardner is no superstar but his presence has been missed, specifically his speed in the lineup and his defense in the outfield. Win this game for him Yankees, win it for him and clinch the series win over the Mets. Here’s the lineup…
SS Derek Jeter
CF Curtis Granderson
DH Alex Rodriguez
2B Robinson Cano
1B Mark Teixeira
LF Raul Ibanez
RF Nick Swisher
3B Eric Chavez
C Russell Martin
RHP Phil Hughes
Tonight’s game is scheduled to start at 7:15pm ET and can be seen on FOX. Enjoy.
David Robertson Update: Robertson (oblique) will make his first minor league rehab appearance with Triple-A Empire State tomorrow. He could return in time for next weekend’s series in Washington.

can be seen on FOX
Unless you live in one of the seven million cities that are being blacked out because they stole 5! games to put up against each other. Bastards!!!
Agreed. They really need to change these blackout rules. At least when Sunday Night Baseball does it there’s only one game and you can watch it on ESPN. With FOX there’s multiple games and you’re stuck with whatever they give you.
The teams don’t care about you.
Obviously, but they’re still pieces of shit and just because we understand their motivations doesn’t mean we should simply excuse them.
Try Fox en espanol it you have it…
Dodgers v Mariners on regular fox in my market but the Yankees are on en espanol.
Oh, I’m not excusing them. They are scumbags.
Now I really want them to go after LaHair. He’s not a very good defender, but we’ve managed to live pretty much the whole year with Ibanez out there. Maybe Tony Campana, but then they’d have 2 of the exact same player when Gardner gets back.
Not fake news, but I FEEL the words Tommy John Surgery coming. I mean it’s usually pitchers (or Xavier Nady) that need TJS, but it’s usually only pitchers who have pain for this long in their elbow.
Yeah…This really sucks.
I think everyone assumes this the minute you hear “Dr. James Andrews.” I’ve been worried about it since the first setback, but fingers still crossed.
I’m stuck watching Marlins vs. Rays because I live in Florida. This fucking sucks.
At least this made me giggle:
http://bats.blogs.nytimes.com/.....roadcasts/
I <3 Ralph Nadar.
Jim Thome hit his first home run today. Anyone else saddened to see him go out like this, a pinch hitting specialist on a floundering NL team that was supposed to be a big time contender and his last chance at a winner? He was still a 130+ wRC player just last year
He still has a chance to turn it around. Look what Adam Dunn is doing this season. Thome is much older but they’re of the same skill set. There’s always a chance he can turn it around.
He was on the DL for like, eight weeks.
Hughes finally got a haircut?
Alright, Mr. Hughes, let’s do this.
is today a holiday? Just noticed the caps
Military Appreciation Day.
Never heard of it, but that makes sense. thanks
yeah I saw that too. I noticed that the guy who threw the first pitch was some sort of military.
Phil
come on, you’re better than that.
grrr
Predictions as to how many times Tim McCarver gets tongue tied tonight?
I think he’s already screwed up at least 3 times.
I’m going to say 37.
A little low, wouldn’t you say? lol
“Fans don’t like rebuilding years.”
*insert “you don’t say” meme*
Have to wonder if that CG effort last time out will mess with Hughes’ command.
Yep, mow ‘em down.
McCarver 137 million dollar win by Santana? Time for Florida Tim
Sheesh, Russ threw him out by a mile.
OMG, Derek’s on base?!?!?! Now if the world is really upside down maybe Grandy will get on base as well, then Arod get’s a hit.
Changing location is important for pitcher? Did not know that…
Tim Mcarver imparting his wisdom?
Did you know that the ball slows down as it approaches home plate?
I’m happy I’m only listening on the Radio tonight.
McCarver vs. Sterling is like the exact opposite of Sophie’s choice.
Wait until he goes into his clever “ironically, speeds slows the game down” routine.
Not sure if M’s/Dodgers is all that much worse than listening to ME-Carver.
Left handed hitters are low ball hitters. Hughes is a high ball pitcher. That’s why lefties have had trouble with Hughes. – Tim McCarver
That’s it and that’s all. No other analysis or statistical study is necessary. Thanks Tim.
“When pitchers are struggling hitters are hitting the ball hard”
-Tim McCarver during a Yankee-Red Sox game last year.
RISP hit!
OMG RISPNONFAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A hit with RISP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A-Rod! With a man in scoring position!
As much as our left side of the infield is as old as some diamonds, I love that every time they get a hit/score a run/get an RBI they are passing some HOFer.
Robbie looking locked in. When he’s hot he’s going with every pitch wherever they throw it. Love it so much.
These guy get worse every week. How does Fox continue to use them?
Joe Buck is on the record saying he would rather watch the Bachelorette than Baseball and only reads about the games he needs to cover in the paper.
http://www.dailymotion.com/vid.....no?start=1
It’s ridiculous that Fox keeps trotting him out there
It’s like deja vu all over again
Son of bitch.
Well they got their hit with RISP for the night
Gah. Lord Voldemort taketh and he giveth…
Yankees are pathetic!
In terms of hitting with the bases loaded and RISP yes they are
If I was a pitcher playing against the Yankees I would load the bases every inning. Easiest CG Shutout ever.
Pitch count would be too high.
No, pop up and dp every inning.
3 HBP, GITP
4 pitches
You seriously can’t make this shit up unreal
Wow it looks like there are actually people at the game tonight.
A changeup!!!!
Outfield options
Span
David Dejesus
Soriano
Byrd
Coco crisp
Mike Francesa? What about Nate McLouth?
Why does no one ever mention him to that fat scout wannabe.
Soriano cant play a lick of defense.
Span is a slap hitter. Same with Dejesus
Byrd is iffy.
Crisp is an interesting possibility
Span is a black Brett Garnder.
Only he is a better average hitter
Wait, DeJesus is dismissed for being a slap htter, but Crisp is interesting?
Fair enough. I thought Crisp had more home runs
Brian LaHair!
Damn I hate Willingham’s new contract
I never thought i would ever say this but i actually dred bases loaded
That was an at-bat of what I don’t like to see from Hughes. Put them away Phillip.
Hopefully that was just one at bat.
Trade for maxwell back he raked in st
I will never understand why Tyler Perry is practically a billionaire. Unreal.
Maybe the bravesnhave a guy they want to get rid of
What about Headley? He can spell A-Rod at third base too
Someone tell Buck Trout was drafted 25th overall not in the 25th round.
It’s completely unbearable listening to them.
The lady in the toyota commercial is not attractive.
She is no Kim Jones thats for sure
I love her. I think she’s totally sexy.
Quintanilla? Come on Phil
#obligatoryhomer
The way Hughes is giving up Homers, this has to regress to the norm at some point right?
We could say the same thing about the Yankees ability to hit in the clutch, but it hasn’t changed
.333 RISP today …
Extreme fly ball pitcher in the AL East in Yankee Stadium. This is the norm.
Regression to his norm isn’t exactly regression to “the norm” meaning the league average. It could fluctuate to extremes from season to season, as we’ve seen with other pitchers (Shields, Beckett), but those guys get ground balls. This is Phil Hughes. You’re just happy when they’re solo shots.
Of f*cking course. F*cking piece of sh*t bum. Ugh.
Did he really give up a HR to that guy?
Joe buck hates Coughlin!
I hate being blacked out. I forgot how much I dislike Suzynzzzwyynn Wldmynnynnn.
better than Tim “I state the obvious or am completely oblivious” McCarver.
Yes, Tim, Derek will forever be a “player.”
off topic…I just ate an entire pizza. I have never been more comfortable, yet hated myself so much at the same time.
What kind of pizza? I don’t mean toppings, I mean from where?
Place called Pizza Nova. It was real pizza, I can never live outside of the NYC area because the pizza is so much better than the rest of the country.
Yea, I just wanted to make sure it was real pizza as opposed to a chain place or something like a Tombstone.
God no, after a slice or two of Dominos/Pizza Hut/Papa Johns I feel a gross fullness, and I don’t eat frozen pizza. After working in a pizzaria for a couple years I got used to only eating real pizza.
Every once in a while the chain places will lure me back in. I always feel disgusted afterwards.
I also don’t live in NYC, so I don’t have the benefits you have.
I actually live just over the bridge in Jersey, but yeah, I understand. Once you leave NYC, Westchester, and Northern NJ finding good pizza is near impossible.
Putnam and Rockland are not bad.
Wow, Rosenthal didn’t sound robotic for once.
Is it against booth rules to discuss game?
Honestly, while listening at some points I forget I’m listening to a game and wonder “why am I listening to two old people babble again?”
CGrand in a slump?
Fan fail.
Goddamn it, that’s your FAN DUTY to knock that ball away.
I believe he was wearing a Met shirt
I think Phil Shiffley would be a better announcer than these 2. I’ve only been listening for half an inning and I think it’s time to watch the game on mute.
Hey guys, just flipped the game on but I’m already confused. Why did Hughes’ fastball move a little bit?
Why the f’ed up hats tonight?
Military appreciation night. show respect.
I hate the troops. Although I do support our wars.
::rolls eyes:: just going to ignore you forever now.
I have to think that was an extremely exaggerated joke.
Hence the rolled eyes, his humor may be honest, but it’s terrible.
I think its the opposite.
I think that Jeter caused that as much as Granderson did.
Looked Jeter could have gotten that.
Granderson’s reads in the outfield are just awful. He starts back on absolutely everything. He’s fooled far too much.
LOL who the hell are you to be swinging 3-0? Are you shitting me?
Better just call for it and go get it, Jetes.
scout: Phil Hughes battled back from 3-0 to retire Daniel Murphy.
useful insight
I hate the scout, so much. It’s almost always useless.
It’s almost like Tim McCarver found a side job.
Geez, listening to these 2, you’d think the Mets have a better offense than the Yankees.
Yankees are +16 with 2 fewer games played.
In the clutch they do. They are one of the best teams in baseball in hitting with RISP and getting two out runs
They’re in a weak division, though. Wait…nevermind.
Hah 0-2 to 4-2 come on dude.
love the 0-2 walk
Duda slightly resembles Jason Giambi.
not just physically, but that big powerful swing juice employed in pinstripes.
runs would be nice.
Patches O’Houlihan has seen better runs in his shorts.
are swish’s high socks tribute to godner?
The $137 million no-hitter.
Swisher is just brutal.
Were you saying this last year?
You can’t be serious. While underperforming a bit, he is far far from brutal
What the sweet fuck are you watching? A .318 OBP is BRUTAL. He’s swinging at a career high in pitches out of and in the zone. He’s been brutal.
For serious.
Baseball is so boring. It’s much more interesting to talk to last nights losing pitcher.
Gotta post these, as they are obligatory.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xdTYVxzEwI
Hate how Fox doesn’t have the pitch count listed.
I was saying this earlier to my dad. How is it that every regular baseball network shows the pitch count and this fucking network, that televises the World Series, does not?
Fox is terrible at everything. Their news network sucks, their sports broadcasting team sucks, and they cancelled Firefly. I hate Fox.
I understand that was years ago, but never forget!!!
They also cancelled Family Guy twice.
Oh, and their news network is not a news network.
and Futurama, and ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT!!!!
Dollhouse and Fringe too
At least Family Guy and Futurama got picked up by other networks though, Arrested Development and Firefly being canceled are two of the biggest travesties in modern entertainment history.
The biggest travesty is NBC renewing Community, only to move it to Fridays and then fire the creator/showrunner.
I have a feeling next season of Community will be like watching Bewitched when Dick Sargent suddenly replaced Dick York.
replacing the showrunner isn’t anything new, I mean Sienfeld replaced Larry David and continued to be successful, changing it to Friday is going to kill it though. Which is sad, because it’s a very good show.
Seinfeld was noticeably worse after Larry David left.
Seinfeld was already a dying show by the end of the 7th season.
I actually felt a breath of fresh air with season 8, but their final season was awful, by their standards. Ratings were fine, sure, but the show was but an empty husk of what it used to be by that point.
The worst episode from seasons 3-5 annihilates the best episode of season 9.
Worst. Finale. Ever.
Which was written by David, too. Makes me hate watching the good episodes because the finale is always in the back of my mind.
No doubt.
Everything about that episode is trailer trash.
Sony was responsible for firing Dan Harmon, not NBC… but I don’t think they were sad to see him go.
It was really about get the syndication numbers, which is why NBC doesn’t mind burying it on Fridays… it’s a shame… great show…
NBC could have overruled Sony if they’d given a shit.
Don’t know if you saw Harmon’s comments but the head guy at NBC never talked to him at any time, so that’s pretty telling.
I hate to defend Fox, but on this issue– no other broadcast networks would have picked up Arrested Development or Firefly in the first place. Had Arrested Development been pitched in 2010 or later, it would have ended up with a long life– on cable.
We can’t all watch objective news channels like msnbc.
Touchy, are we?
When did I say anything about MSNBC? I find them just as terrible, and I’m supposed to agree with them.
yeah, cause anybody said they were objective
neither one is remotely objective
Whatever lack of objectivity MSNBC opinion programs have does not compare to Fox (both their opinion and news programming). Don’t think MSNBC has sued for the right for a news program to misinform the public either. Anyways, this is getting off topic.
95 or did fox radar burp.
90 pitches
Gee has a good changeup tonight; the bane of the Yankees
The bane of all baseball players.
The Bane of Batman.
It’s that old wise man grand daddy delivery, right? I mean, because Tim never actually makes sense, however he SOUNDS like he does.
“Most guys come to the majors because of their arms, Gee came to the major’s because he could pitch.”
Therefore:
Most people get brought to the majors because they can’t pitch.
thanks, Tim.
McCarver never forgave the yanks for beating his boston teams
So, while I was out today, I hear a problem now with Brett Gardner, and I can’t even watch this game!
I hate when the Yankees have to play these Saturday night home games, anyway, since only FOX even ever makes the Yankees (or Mets) ever play Saturday night home games. These two almost always play during daylight hours in New York, which is the way it should be.
Hughes with a meatball
If only the friggin bats would wake up.
No home runs = no wins
Okay, how about some runs, boys?
Why are so many people in the stadium cheering Wright’s homer?
Because Mets games sell well on Stubhub.
How about some runs, boys?
Hey, there’s an echo in here.
Despite the Yankees’ overall respectable record (and position in the standings), this is the kind of game they really seem so far to fail in. Like Kuroda in alot of his games, Phil is pitching well enough to win. Since the opposing starter is also solid, it’ll take a timely hit or two to prevail. And, as we saw in the 1st inning, all too often the Yanks not only miss those opportunities, they seem to toss them away.
I hope they prove me wrong this inning, but it seems a season-long issue.
Doesn’t the late inning success in 2009 seem like a LONG time ago?
Wow, A-rod was late on that pitch.
Get mad
WTP
Aroid puts that one out.
Hit it closer to his hands than the good part of the bat, but keep thinking that.
Yes, I will keep thinking that a roided up Alex muscles that one out.
Of course he does. But, you know, he last did roids in 2003 or 2005, not within the last few years.
Wow how many times has this happen this year.
Productive warning track power.
Joe Buck is like fingernails on a blackboard. I fucking hate him annoucing games.
I’d prefer the soothing sound of the blackboard.
He gets so excited when the Mets do something, and is so dispassionate when the Yanks do something. It is ridiculous how biased he is against the Yanks. And his voice sounds like some weird freak llama attendant at a children’s zoo.
And not nearly as entertaining as these llama aficionados.
OLE!
That’s OK.
Don’t take the walk Robbie.
Outs are better.
Again, a good changeup
Calling a HR here.
BRILLIANT!
!!!!
Give the man a cigar!
you are good, why the hell aren’t you calling more hr’s???
Can’t over do it.
I’d settle for a wild pitch
God, I hate being on at-bat12 tape delay!
and what are tonight’s Powerball numbers, please?
Blargh!
NICE THANK YOU TEX!!!!!!!!!! I can leave work happy now
Yes!!
Tex message.
TEEEEIIIIIIIIISSXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
TEX!!!!! With a homer, now we have a chance to win this game!
Well, there’s your homer, Rick
Tex!
Win in the bag.
Of course after the homerun they would show a replay of the ‘good’ curve ball and not the homerun.
That’s fox for you
He finally hit our HR , now we can win this game.
Unsustainable. Not a playoff team.
“Home field advantage is definitely n advantage.”
I hate these fuckers. There are both stupid and ignorant. They make Kay look like a Rhodes scholar.
Sorry Reply fail
As good as Tim McCarver was in the first half of his career, that’s as bad as he’s been in the second half.
This is a lie, for Tim McCarver was never good.
It was a reach, but I had to work in that Family Guy quote somehow.
I posted it earlier, but it didn’t show up because I posted the Stewie/Mets fan joke in the same post.
Slider time.
WHAT A CATCH!
Granderson, such a bad OF.
Be thankful it wasn’t a shallow pop up in front of him. He would’ve gone back to the track before coming in.
Grandy!!!!!
Quintanilla has some pop in that bat
could have tagged and reached second on that. glad he didnt
Big time catch.
McCarver is fucking delusional: I don’t think he touched second base on the way back to first.
No, he didn’t touch it. He stomped on it.
Yeah, really not sure how he came up with that one.
Sterling made me think that was a routine fly ball. And then he called Girardi Torre THREE TIMES!!!
I guess he’s better than McCarver though…
I love when he still refers to Torre as the manager.
Eh, everyone makes those Girardi/Torre mistakes. I was listening to the Scott Van Pelt show on the way to work the other day, and one of the NBA announcers was on and he called Kevin Durant “Kevin Garnett” a few times.
Fucking ump, the 0-1 pitch was WHERE?
Uh oh, Buck’s getting closer…
It’s not that there was no play, it’s that Martin wanted to catch the guy on 3rd leaning.
Nice.
Wright’s a bigger threat than Torres? Well, I’m very glad you’re here to tell us these things, Tim.
Chewie, take the professor in the back and plug him into the hyperdrive!
Phew. Now they can turn things over to Robertson and Mari…crap.
srsly
Don’t realize how much you miss something until its gone
“I think Wright’s a bigger threat (than Andres Torres)”
Hughes has given up 2 runs or fewer in 14/23 starts since returning from the DL last year
SEND HIM DOWN!!! FIRE GIRARDI!!
But he sucks!
Why?
I’m not sure, but prevailing wisdom is he sucks!
Let’s go Chavy. We need some geico runs.
It would be pretty sweet if Kevin Long were magically able to work some voodoo magic on Martin and bring him back to his ’06-’08 form.
Id prefer he get Arod back to ’06-’08 form. And by “voodoo magic”, i mean steroids.
Jeter and Youkilis are the only players I can think of that argue a called third strike EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
Youkilis usually throws a fit. Jeter is classy… he’ll just lean in and talk about it.
That’s because Jeter is smooth, suave, and sophisticated.
Youkilis is a Cro-Magnon.
There’s a fine line.
Swisher argues it every time too, except his does flamboyant gyrations as well.
I really look forward to D-Rob returning.
Clay!!!
Scary leverage situation for Rapada. Give him credit.
I’m glad we got out of that quickly, but more because it shuts up those two babblin’ booth buffoons.
That’s got a good ring.
BuckCarver: The Babblin’ Booth Buffoons.
Grandyyyyyyyyyyyman
The Grandyman!
Would anybody else be down for signing Youk next year if the contract is right? I know he’s been off the past couple years, but I think he’s been quietly battling through injuries and has never really taken to the rather abrupt full time switch to 3B he had to make. I think he still has a couple good years in the tank. Sox seem to like Middlebrooks a lot and I wouldn’t be surprised if they let him walk.
No. Never. Hate.
Oh they will et him walk. My only interest in him coming to the yankees is the hope he does good and causes sox fans more apoplexy. I don’t see a spot for him though, we already have an old thirdbaseman and an old fistbasemen
DH/Backup3B/Backup1B
Basically taking Chavez’s role.
I could see it, but only if it was a relatively low base salary on a 1 year deal
Left field.
I’m joking, but he wouldn’t be that much worse than Raul.
Grandy man with the garbage time POWWWA.
A 2 run game is garbage time? Lol ok. trololollool
Wooooosh.
#cured?
Um isn’t Granderson exactly the kind of hitter that hits line drive home runs?
Still seems like the Mets are winning this game, doesn’t it?
You mean it feels like they are currently winning the game right?
No, I mean by listening to the Babblin’ Booth Buffoons.
Nope.
Hah, yup. The futility against Gee gave this a familiar feeling. Had to keep reminding myself we were actually winning.
It’s better if you watch the game with the sound off on Fox. Dead silence for nearly three hours here. Much better.
Anyone know who is doing the YES telecast for the Braves series?
Wow. Those all fucking looked good.
thanks Tim Tschida
Well we now know who to blame if this goes awry
Bay is sad. They’re literally pumping fastballs right down the middle and he simply cannot catch up.
Buck thinks everyone who comes up is only trying to hit a homer
This Jordanny kid is, hah.
Random but, does anyone know when Fox’s rights to the World Series ends?
As of right now – 2013.
Lol completely overmatched right there
Soriano really is Wetteland 2.0
There we go
Alright, good win.
Listening to McCarver announce a game should be a reminder for everyone to have your parents tested for dementia.
I hate this untucked shirt shit. Have some respect for the uniform.
haha sorry didn’t see your comment. But yeah my coach would make you run poles if anyone did that after one of our games
Who cares?
Apparently me and that other dude.
fans who don’t like there players looking selfish…I guess not everybody can have the class that Mo does
Hate the way Soriano untucks his shirt after every game
Heh, +1.
+2
I don’t like it, but it’s at least better than doing some sort of rain dance (Valverede) or shooting fake arrows into the sky (Rodney).
Fernando Rodney can kiss the fat part of my ass.
WOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
dontchaknow
That tack on run was huge…. who knows what that inning looks like after a leadoff walk, but it would probably have involved bunts and/or steals.
