Update: A-Rod has non-displaced fracture in left hand

CoJo doubles twice and Williams homers down on the farm
A-Rod injured in loss to Mariners

1:10am: A-Rod suffered a non-displaced fracture of the fifth metacarpal in his left hand and is going to the DL. That’s better than a displaced fracture but still sucks. They won’t know the exact timetable for his return until he sees the doctors in New York on Thursday. Fan-friggin’-tastic. At least this happened before the trade deadline.

12:11am: Alex Rodriguez left tonight’s game in the eighth inning after getting hit by a pitch in the left wrist/hand. He was in obvious pain and was taken out of the game immediately. Updates to follow, but obviously losing A-Rod for any length of time would be very bad.

  • Mike

Looks like Nunie will be back.

  • OldYanksFan

That’s a guaranteed trip to the DL. Pain like that means spmething’s fractured or broken.

  • Klemy

It’s too bad Felix left the game. We had 6 other guys in the lineup who had not been hit yet.

  • The Scheister of Doom

    Stuart….NO! Bad Stuart!

I hope it’s just severe pain with no other consequences. It sounded terrible. Get well soon Alex!

  • Paul VuvuZuvella

    Looked bad. Shit!

  • OldYanksFan

My guess is ARod’s season is over.

  • Knoxvillain

    Welcome to New York, Hanley.

    • pat

Welcome to New York , Corban Joseph.

      • Knoxvillain

        I wouldn’t mind that. Can’t Mustelier play some 3rd?

        • Bunt Gardner

          Not from the DL

      • Brooklyn Ed

        …or David Adams.

  • pistol pete

Arod might be OK, we’ve seen him go down hard before and be OK. Hope this is one of those times. He’s not much for handling pain like Jeter but I’ll admit it didn’t look good.

    • Knoxvillain

What makes you think A-Rod can’t handle pain like Jeter?

      • pistol pete

Because everytime he gets hit he acts like he’s dead.

        • your mom

I don’t know, he looked pretty lively to me. Everytime he’s hit, he screams and cries like a little girl.

          • Bunt Gardner

Can I fracture a bone in your hand and measure the reaction?

            • your mom

I posted before I found out about the fx. In any case it’s true.

  • Matt Montero

Just curious, what would Headley cost? Any guesses on what the Yankees would have to give up for him? I know other teams are interested as well, so I’m sure it won’t be cheap but after this season they could move him to the outfield to replace Swisher.

    • Knoxvillain

Too much for an average/below average player.

      • FIPster Doofus

He’s well above average, especially out of Petco.

        • Knoxvillain

Career .270 hitter with average power. Not to impressive if you ask me, especially for 3B man.

          • FIPster Doofus

            Career away from Petco: .299/.366/.448
            fWAR since 2010: 11.4

            Average/below average? Nope.

            • FIPster Doofus

              11.1. Sorry.

          • RetroRob

You need to make the Petco adjustment for hitters.

Supposedly the Padres are asking a lot for him as other teams have called.

    • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

      Way way too much.

    • Rich in NJ

      Montero.

  • Voice of Reason

if he’s not out for a long time I’d be stunned. It will always be something.

  • Rocky Road Redemption

I’ll be shocked if he’s not out for a significant length of time-btw he reacted, it seemed like a broken bone which would mean out for the season.

  • Rocky Road Redemption

I TOLD you guys we should have traded him, Jeter, and Robbie for Justin Verlander and Cole Hamels in a three team trade, but you all LAUGHED.

Well who’s laughing now, huh? HUH?!?!?!?

    • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

      Everyone.

      At you.

      • Rocky Road Redemption

        YOU’RE JUST JEALOUS, DAMMIT.

  • Mike Stanley

Love seeing the reactions of the Harvard Medical Board on here.

    • Dr. Oz

All he needs is a coffee colonic. That’ll cure the wrist.

    • JobaWockeeZ

Like what, it hurt bad? Holy shit what an inaccurate comment. Obviously the people at Harvard truly know whether or not if that hurt.

  • adeelmd

5th metacarpal or one the phalanges could be fractured. looked really baaaaaaaaaad.

    • sangreal

well, you certainly showed the guy above you. Nailed it

  • pistol pete

Any news on Arod, bad enough the 8th inning was a disaster both the top and bottom as Joe emptied out the pen and the Yanks walked 3 and gave up a run, but it’s all pretty irrelevant if ARod’s hurt badly.

  • Mads

How can Felix not get ejected after hitting 3 batters, and 2 of them in the same inning?

    • sangreal

because there was nothing to suggest it was intentional. He got pulled after hitting the 3rd batter anyway

      • Mads

Felix has great control, so he doesn’t hit 3 batters by accident. Can’t believe they didn’t even warn the Mariners.

    • Jinxyman

      Not even a warning either?

  • RetroRob

    Can CoJo fake third?

  • Mike Stanley

I’m sure Stuart A thinks this is good news.

    • RetroRob

If he’s some anti-A-Rod guy but nevertheless a Yankee fan, then he’ll be worried. Not to mention, fans who hate certain Yankees need those players. They feel lost. They don’t know where to direct their hate.

  • captain kiwi

PLEASE, do not get a 3rd basemen ahead of another catcher. i understand the market is lacking, and chavez can’t get do 3rd everyday, but i am so fucking sick of martin/stewart. i’ve been giving them slack all season but something (i don’t know what what) happened today, and i just cannot stand watching them shit the bed anymore.

    • Ralph

Martin watching third strike go by for the last out?

      • captain kiwi

        that definitely helped.

        • Ralph

In my Baseball Mogul game he was playing so bad that I got really pissed and convinced Jorge out of retirement and benched him.

Unfortunately this is real life so we can’t do that.

          • Jacob

            What game is this?

            • Ralph

Kinda like OOTP or MLB front office manager, except less in-depth (faster gaming)

  • Ralph

Although I hope not, it’s possible that we meet *cringes* Ramiro Pena.

  • Mike Stanley

Non-displaced hand fracture. Going to the DL. No timetable.

  • stuart a

arod stinks but I do not want to see him or anyone else get hurt. he actually has shown some punch the last 2 or 3 games.

clutch hitting tonight as usual… they suck with RISP, it is beyond bad it is pathetic..

Chad qualls is a total friggin waste, they cannot DFA him fast enough.. Rapada the lefty specialist walks a ton of batter and Logan has been pitching like crap for 3 weeks or so.. They have a bunch of specialists… why they did not hit a mariner after the arod hbp is beyond me. after garcia got the leadoff guy out I hit the next guy regardless of what happens in the game and I hit him hard……..

    • your mom

The only guy that retaliates is CC. The rest are wussies.

      • NEPA Yankee

C.C. Really? The only pitcher on the roster with ANYTHING resembling testicles is going tonight, and it ain’t C.C.

        • NYinTX

Joba would’ve ended this shit with the quickness.

  • DM

If he’s hurt you could call up Laird as well.

  • Mike

From Mark Feinsand – Mark Feinsand ?@BloggingBombers
A-Rod has a non-displaced fracture of his left hand. Headed for DL.

  • stuart a

arod should just hit 6th that is it. for a 6th hitter he is acceptable not a 3rd hitter………kyle seager has more rbi’s then arod, smoke that nonsense……

    • TomH

      DDAH

    • DT

Arod gets hurt and off course you’re jerking off in excitement.

  • kevin

hope the blows out is elbow

    • Bunt Gardner

      Huh?

  • RetroRob

    It’s official. A fracture.

    Now on to plan B.

    • captain kiwi

chavez/nix. i will be flabbergasted should they find another rental above the rest of their needs :/

  • Jinxyman

I think with that you are looking at 4-6 weeks. Possibly less. Could be worse, I guess.

  • JobaWockeeZ

A-Rod injury is a fractured left fifth metacarpal.

Manu Ginobli suffered the same injury and was out 6 weeks.

    • JobaWockeeZ

but Baseball players like Chavez and Eric Bynes have been out 2-3 months with that injury.

      • FIPster Doofus

Yeah. Chavez just told the media eight weeks.

      • Bobtaco

Chavez said on post game interview, “8 weeks to the day.”

  • pistol pete

ARod’s wrist is fractured, what a shitty night.

    • TomH

If it’s the fifth metacarpal, that doesn’t sound like the wrist

  • wow

    2009: year of the walk-off

2012: year the walk(ing)-off(the field with the head trainer)

  • The Real Greg

Go get Chase Headley from the Padres. There’s your answer.

    • FIPster Doofus

From your keyboard to Cashman’s eyes.

Alas, there will be a major bidding war for Headley’s services. He’s a great player and teams know it. He just needs to get out of Petco for good.

      • The Real Greg

        Him or…

        Trevor Plouffe from the Twins

        • FIPster Doofus

I haven’t heard anything about Plouffe being on the block. Is he?

  • your mom

Just a fracture. Give him a Motrin for the inflammation, Vicodin for the pain and wrap his hand in ACE wrap. He’ll be ready for tomorrow’s game.

    • captain kiwi

      “walk it off”

      • CUYanks

Let him hit with one of those clubs the NFL linemen wear.

        • David N

Hell, just amputate the hand and replace it with one of those Luke Skywalker robotic hands. And train him in the use of The Force while we’re at it.

          Man, this sucks.

    • Kempire Strikes Back

      Ha. Needed a laugh.

  • Rich in NJ

It’s not his throwing hand. He’ll be fine.

  • CUYanks

Arod just cannot play a full season these days. This was just a fluke injury though. Must be very frustrating for him. Maybe he will be fresh for October?

    • David N

I have a hard time using this sort of thing to say he can’t stay healthy. Guy got hit with a pitch – could have happened to anyone, and that’s not his fault.

  • CUYanks

Chavez is saying he had the exact same injury and it took him 8 weeks on the nose.

    • Mike Stanley

That’s great news. Because any Chavez comparison is a worst-case.

    • Rich in NJ

      6-8, according to Waldman.

      • CUYanks

Yeah, but he said for him it took exactly 8 weeks. I was watching the interview on YES.

  • Mike Stanley

They have the best record in baseball. They have the second-best run differential. They still get to club on the Red Sox and Blue Jays and Orioles a million times the rest of the year.

    And they get Joba back.
    And they get Swisher back.
    And they get Aardsma back.
    And they’ll get Alex back.

And then everyone will f—ing pay.

    • Bunt Gardner

      You forgot Pettitte.

  • BK2ATL

    Erik Boland ?@eboland11
Chavez said he had the same injury as ARod. Said it took 6-8 weeks to heal

    • sangreal

He actually followed that up by saying it was 8 weeks on the dot

  • Nathan

Great. So another player out (likely) for extended time?

    Ugh.

  • RetroRob

The problem is if this injury takes 8 weeks as Chavez says, then he’s coming back somewhere with a week to maybe, maybe two weeks of playing time. There are no minor league games to rehab and get his timing down, and then the Yankees launch right into the postseason. We saw what A-Rod did (or didn’t do) coming back last year when his timing was off.

    • Mike Stanley

Okkkk…sooooooo what would you like to do about it? It is what it is.

      • RetroRob

Just playing it out as the news comes in. Nothing more.

Since you commented, what do you want to do?

        • Mike Stanley

          No panic trade for Headley.

          • DM

No panic trade for anyone. Use Laird and Nunez.

  • stuart a

joba is needed asap. qualls has to go. BA against is 340 or so….

if they are platooning nix at 3rd they are crazy he is a zero. nunez is a better option to rest CHavez…..

    get more athletic…

jeter, grandy, cano, tex, are the top 4.. i bat swisher 5th and go from there……….

  • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

What’s Cody Ransom up to these days?

  • Jd

Nunez gets a chance to play every day. Now we will see what we have.

    • CUYanks

      Many, many errors.

    • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

I’d imagine Chavez will get the bulk of the time, at least against RHP.

    • Rich in NJ

He doesn’t have enough power to play a corner infield position regularly. They can offset A-Rod’s loss by getting a big bat to play somewhere else.

  • Jacob

So i heard stuart just got sent to the DL

    • Mike Stanley

Going to be fascinating watching him blame Alex for the next 2 months when they lose a game.

      • Jacob

Oh we are all going to enjoy it more, I bet he is all like

“SEE WITHOUT HIM WE WIN ALL THESE GAMES BLAH BLAH TROLL”

  • Mike Stanley

@KenDavidoff Eric Chavez appears to be referring to an injury he suffered in 2004. Missed 33 games – so shorter than “six to eight weeks.”

So that confirms the idea that Chavez needed 8 weeks to be back to 100%. Which means a week to go in the regular season.

    • DM

Just try to make do with Laird/Nunez — and hope A-Rod can get in a few games before the post-season starts. If they keep getting the starting pitching, they’ll hold on.

    • Len S.

How does that confirm 6 to 8 when he missed 33 games which is shorter than 6?

      • Mike Stanley

        Reading comprehension.

  • CUYanks

This is where our depth will pay off. At least we have several in-house candidates in Chavez/Nunez. Some teams would be shoving Miguel Cairo in there.

    • your mom

Don’t forget we still have lil’ ol’ Ramiro Pena.

  • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

FWIW Chavez suffered the same injury on June 4, 2004 and was expected to miss 6-8 weeks. He returned on July 9 (less than 6-8 weeks)

    • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

And in his first 2 weeks back (12 games), he hit 372/526/535

    • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

      *June 1, not June 4

    • your mom

Yeah but he was 26, Arod will be 37 in 3 days.

      • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

Not sure bones heal faster in 26 year olds than 37 year olds, but that could be a factor, I suppose.

        • DM

And Chavez has a history of being a slow healer.

        • your mom

You’re right, maybe there’s no difference. A teenager would heal faster than an adult though.

  • Ichy and Irok hello to number 28

Laird,russo,pena,joseph…..not looking good also martin can play third as girardi is sure to try it.
What do the mets want for Wright?

  • tabbert

Andrelton Simmons of the braves has the same injury. He is expected to miss a month. From what i have read, its a 3-6 week injury. But, everyone heals at a different pace.

  • Kosmo

    Brandon Laird.

  • johnreverent

welcome to the majors corban joesph … try not to suck please

  • your mom

Brandon Laird has been on a tear lately, bring him up and hope he continues the hot streak. If we catch lightning in a bottle we might be able to increase his trade value.

  • dennyneagleshooker

    hanley?!

    • Joe R

      Too late :(

  • Jacob

Ryan Roberts would get traded like an hour before this freaking happens

    • CUYanks

To the Rays of all teams.

  • CUYanks

Chase Utley had a similar injury (4th metacarpal instead of 5th) and missed almost exactly 1 month in 2007. His stats didn’t seem to suffer at all when he returned:
    http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/pl.....?year=2007

    • RetroRob

Despite Chavez saying he missed eight weeks, it appears he only missed five. Hopefully A-Rod can be back by late August. Still not sure who is going to fill in. The more I look at it, it seems like Laird is the likely move. CoJo played a few dozen games at third in 2009 and a couple more in 2010 and hasn’t appeared there since. I’m sure there’s a reason.

      • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

Yeah, I think it will be Laird for now, possibly Nunez later when he’s done with his rehab.

  • Karim Garcia

I’d rather not see Brandon Laird….yuck.

  • Deep Thoughts

Just wondering, did anyone hear how long it took Eric Chavez to recover from a similar injury?
