Yankees send David Phelps to Double-A Trenton

Via Josh Norris and Mike Ashmore, the Yankees have sent right-hander David Phelps down to Double-A Trenton. The move clears a 25-man roster spot for Darnell McDonald, meaning New York will have an 11-man pitching staff and a five-man bench during the four games in Boston. Phelps will start for the Thunder on Monday, his regular turn. Expected and smart move, plus it keeps him away from the traveling Triple-A circus.

He won’t actually miss a turn in the MLB rotation, am I right?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Right, plus Sabathia will likely take his spot after the break anyway.

  • yooboo

Smart? sort of…. AAA has no game during all star break.

I meant as far as sending him down and carrying an extra position player over the weekend.

      • RetroRob

Does this burn an option every time the Yankees send Phelps down, or can a player be sent down multiple times in a single season under the same option?

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

          One option per year.

        • yooboo

option = year. Useful, isn’t it? lol

That’s why some guys ride the Scranton shuttle their first year. It was bound to be Phelps and Eppley this year. I bet Chase Whitley has his monthly pass booked for 2013.

            • Robinson Tilapia

              (and Mitchell)

      • yooboo

        my apologies. I overlooked “plus”.

    • jjyank

I think Mike was also referring to sending him down and rolling with a 5 man bench.

      • Robinson Tilapia

Thinking ahead, though, if CC comes back and IF Freddy gets and keeps Pettitte’s spot, wouldn’t Phelps stay down in the minors until he’s either needed and/or rosters expand, or would the stretching out process be forgotten and he’s back to the MLB bullpen? #runonsentence

        • Robinson Tilapia

          “when CC comes back”

I don’t doubt the big man is coming back.

        • yooboo

Sabby was put on DL on June 27. He should be eligible to start the 2nd half season against Angels.

          • yooboo

            June 25, actually.

I would hope they do that so he is ready if Garcia reverts or someone gets injured or they need a spot start (double header, minor injury where a starter has to skip a turn in the rotation)

When CC gets back, Phelps is the 6th starter (assuming garcia gets Pettitte’s spot) so I don’t see the value of having him languishing in the pen as the long man and have to deal with stretching him out again.

  • Ted Nelson

I don’t see how staying in a hotel or making an hour commute is any worse than joining AAA on their season long road trip.

    • Ted Nelson

      *any better

After the break Phelps should be brought back up as the 5th starter. I don’t care what Garcia did against the Rays Monday or what he does on Saturday in Boston, he should the long man/mop-up man in the pen.

We know what Garcia is already and we don’t need to see him throw trash once every 5 days. Its better for the team now and in the future keep Phelps in the rotation over Garcia. Girardi, do the right thing here: stop kissing Garcia’s ass just because you love the guy and go with the better pitcher in Phelps. Give the young guy the oppertunity, it worked with Nova and it can work again. Don’t make this another A.J. Burnett situation and hurt the team by caring about someones feelings.

    • Steve (different one)

The Yankees pulled Garcia from the rotation in April in favor of Phelps, then relegated him to mop up duty for 2 months, only putting him back in the rotation when they lost 2 starters in one day. How is that “Girardi kissing his ass”?

      • M-Three

I say Girardi is kissing Garcia’s ass because as soon CC went down and before Andy’s injury he just choose Garcia instead of going with someone who was stretched out. Also, Phelps out pitched Garcia in Tampa yet the Yankees are still caring more about keeping Garcia happy then going with the better pitcher.

I agree with sending Phelps down this weekend since his spot doesn’t come up again before the break. I like that they will keep Phelps going during the break and continuing to stretch him out but he should be brought back up as the 5th starter over Garcia. There is no way anyone can argue that Garcia is a better option than Phelps. Phelps has out pitched him all year and is more deserving of that rotation spot with Andy out.

    • Robinson Tilapia

      You don’t get it.

It’s simply not about any of the above. It would be a reasonable option to go with the veteran because the rookie can remain stretched out in AAA and provides additional depth in case the veteran either falters or another starter goes down.

I would like to see the younger pitcher get the opportunity as well, but neither of us are paid to manage the roster of the New York Yankees, and the people that are have much more to consider than we do. Sometimes you just have to be patient and allow the kid to ride the shuttle for a season until a bigger opportunity opens up. David Robertson rode the shuttle so much he probably had a favorite seat on the bus.

Go ahead and continue projecting your emotions onto the team, though. No one’s stopping you.

Phelps looked great, I liked the fact he wasn’t scared to go inside. K/9 is over 9, ERA is around 3. But I think he’s pitching over his head, his FIP is 4.38 & his xFIP sit at 3.90, but the results have been BTN (better than Noesi). His LOB % has always been high, but not 86%, ever. Same with his K/9, I expect that to balance out closer to his MiL average, or lower based on the level of conpetetion. With all that said, he’s young and if he could pull a Nova and maintain these better than minor numbers, Yankeeland would be ecstatic and he would be a much needed alternative to Garcia if he implodes again.

Bring Phelps back up sometime late next week after his Monday AA start. He’s a better option than Garcia filling in for Pettite. Personally I like his stuff better and he’s confident on the mound. When he can start throwing 100 pitches we will be ok. He could turn out to be better than Betances. I’m tired of hearing he’s not a top prospect. He throws 92 on gun and has a good arsenal. Could turn out to be a Ian Kennedy type but can handle NY and AL East a bit better.
