Update: Nix out 10-14 days with hip flexor strain

Game 159: Must Win

Sunday: Nix will be out 10-14 days with a Grade I strain of the left hip flexor. Sounds like the only way we’ll see him again this year is if the Yankees manage to advance to the ALCS.

Saturday: Utility man Jayson Nix is heading back to New York for an MRI on his left hip flexor. No idea how long it’s been bothering him, but Eduardo Nunez will take over as the backup middle infielder by default. Casey McGehee and Eric Chavez will help out on the corners. If Nix will be out a while, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Yankees recalled Corban Joseph, who is already on the 40-man roster, just to have the extra bench help the rest of the way.

OK, so now I sort of see why Nunez is in there – I’d rather tire out Jeter and it’s not often I think, “put Jeter in for defense.”

My feelings on Nix are relatively well known on this board, I think he’s vastly overrated by Joe and the announcers and provides very little value overall. However, that’s kind of a big deal if it’s anything serious. I know you don’t give guys off during the playoffs but now, god forbid, if Jeter sprains/pulls something, Nunez is now all of a sudden our SS for a few games in the playoffs. I like Nunie as an offensive player, I think over a season he could be productive as a short stop, however there are some flaws in his approach at the plate…but defensively he’s a train wreck.

I know Nix doesn’t have the speed and (what we keep hearing is) the live bat that Nunez has but he’s sound defensively – not great but sound. I also wonder if they would have given Robbie the day off if Nix were available.

A real BASEBALL PLAYER wouldn’t have gotten injured. Psshhhh.

      Nuney at DH?

        I think so, against LHP.

Nix in September is hitting .194 7 for 36. His K to Ab ratio is abysmal. He did have a couple of clutch hits when NY desperately needed them. He´s been around all season because Nunez didn´t work out as the UI. It is that simple. Cashman could have done something at the trade deadline to strengthen the bench but he sat on his hands. For that matter Nunez has not faired much better in Sept. either. Nunez is what he is a .265 hitter with zero versatility.

    I prefer Nunez.
