ALDS Travel Day Open Thread

(Rob Carr/Getty)

I don’t think the Yankees and Orioles needed a full day to travel from Baltimore to New York, but they got one anyway. Both clubs actually dealt with mechanical problems with their trains up to the Bronx last night, and Mark Feinsand says the Yankees ended up busing their way up from Charm City. They arrived home at 6:30am ET. So maybe they do need the day off after all.

Anyway, here is your open thread for the off-day. The Reds and Giants (Cincinnati up 2-0 in NLDS) are already playing while the Athletics and Tigers (Anderson vs. Sanchez, Detroit up 2-0 in the series) will follow at 9:07pm ET. Both games are on TBS. Talk about them or any other non-political topics here. Have at it.

  1. Craig says:

Imagine having Hunter Pence on this team, too. 0-10.

    • forensic says:

I believe the tbs guys said the giants are still 0-fer with risp in the series. At least we don’t have to watch that on a daily basis.

      • forensic says:

And I checked. They are 0-8 thus far with risp. I don’t know what’s more pitiful, the 0-fer or the only 8 ab’s through 2 1/2 games.

Of course, being no-hit by homer bailey would top the pitiful ness of either one of those numbers.

  2. ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa says:

The Yankees should have kept Mesa on the roster instead of A-Rod. Way higher career batting average.

  3. Nathan says:

Pulling for the Reds and Tigers.

Being a Yankees fan in the Bay, both teams fans have gotten quite ballsy the past year or two (two years ago for the Giants, this year for the A’s).

  4. Eddard reboot v.1.0 says:

Last night’s game where the Yankees struggled to put runs on the board is what the National League would call an offensive boom. This isn’t baseball. If Selig wants to make amends for the 2nd wildcard fiasco he can implement the DH in all of MLB.

  5. Get Phelps Up says:

I hope the Yankees, Cardinals or Nationals win in 4 games because I really wouldn’t like Game 5 starting at 2pm local time.

  6. Joe says:

Where is the article on swisher sucking dick in the playoffs. Admit he sucks when it matters.

    • jjyank says:

I believe that is a niche site. Someone linked to it awhile ago, but it was taken down by Mike. Kids read this stuff, man. Can’t be having videos of that floating around.

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

You can suck dick and be good at baseball. What is it like to be a caveman anyway?

      • FIPster Doofus says:

Uh-oh, the PC cop is here. Using the phrase “sucking dick” doesn’t make someone homophobic.

        • Robinson Tilapia says:

And someone not being homophobic doesn’t mean that implying that someone took part in a sex act with someone of the same sex as a corollary for being less than manly, or whatnot, has any place in 2012. Call me PC cop or whatever. I say learn some better fucking language. Just because this a baseball blog doesn’t mean we have to tolerate talking like a Sam Kinison skit in ’89.

          • FIPster Doofus says:

“Just because this a baseball blog doesn’t mean we have to tolerate talking like a Sam Kinison skit in ’89.”

Why not? It’s up to the site owners to decide what can be tolerated here. They haven’t put a moratorium on foul language, so deal with it. If someone were using hate speech, that’s one thing, but the Swisher comment isn’t that.

        • Knoxvillain says:

And not liking gay people, making fun of them, or hating them doesn’t make people homophobic.

When will people learn when to use the word “homophobic” correctly?

          • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle says:

If this gets seen I’ll probably get in trouble, but I agree. A ‘phobia’ is an irrational fear. Most ‘homophobic people’ don’t fear gay people, they’re just fucking assholes.

  7. Jose M. Vazquez says:

Slight look-alikes: Lew Ford and Stan Laurel (of Laurel and Hardy); Adam Jones and Jaime Foxx a bigger version of the latter.

  8. King George says:

Anybody want to give their official Orioles-Yankes ALDS Series predictions for this point forward? I say Yankees win the series 3-1, taking the next two games.

    • Get Phelps Up says:

I’m saying the Yankees win a close, low scoring affair tomorrow and win Game 4 in convincing style.

    • forensic says:

Lose tomorrow as the offense continues to fail to score for Kuroda. Win game 4 as the offense barely out-homers Hughes. Not sure on game 5 then. Head says lose, heart says win.

    • Captain_Turbo says:

I agree with a 3-1 series win… blowout tomorrow and nail-biter on Thursday.

    • Eddard reboot v.1.0 says:

Game 3- Hiroki Kuroda pitches 7 innings of 1 run ball. Yanks win 3-1 with the only offense coming on a 3 run HR by Mark Teixera.

Game 4- Phil Hughes gives up two HRs to Mark Reynolds and one to Chris Davis. Os win 7-2 with the only offense for the Yanks coming on a 2 run HR by Robbie Cano.

Game 5- CC pitches lights out. 8 innings of 1 run ball. Yanks win 2-1 with the only offense coming on 2 solo HRs by Alex Rodriguez and Raul Ibanez.

Yanks win series 3-2 and start the ALCS the very next day against a well rested Detroit Tigers team.

    • MannyGeee says:

5-3 win tomorrow, Cano hit one far far far away for 3 RBIs and Ichiro squeaks one over for another 2. Jim Thome hits his swan song home run into the 3rd shelf.

game 4 Yankees win 9-4, Hughes gives up 3 in the 1st inning and no hits the O’s for the rest of his outing (7.2 total innings)… Boone Logan LOOGYFails to Chris Davis. Yankee offense led by Nick Swisher and A-Rod just so you nay sayers can go fuck yourselves… (You know who you are)

  9. jdp says:

    Chavez vs. righty OPS 908
    Rodriguez vs. righty OPS 717
    [2012 stats]
    Therefore ?

  10. pistol pete says:

Got to change the order, Ichiro/Jeter/Cano/Tex/ARod/Granderson/Swisher/Ibanez/Martin. Arod has to go down in the order to protect Cano. Too many times Cano is pitched around or sitting in the on deck circle while the game ends with ARod making an out. Cano needs to bat in the first inning and be the centerpiece of the order.

  11. Ethan says:

But Mike all issues are political.

  12. Hall and Nokes says:

Golly, can you imagine Yankee fans trying to come to grips with San Fran’s level of offense this week?

    • jjyank says:

Golly, can you imagine Yankee fans trying to come to grips with San Fran’s level of offense this week?</strike every other team's (often times worse) problems/lack of consistent postseason appearances/significantly smaller world series trophy count?

      Fixed that for you.

      • vin says:

        So close.

      • jjyank says:

Wow, I messed that one up.

Jesus. I went from trying to be a smart ass to completely destroying the internet. I’m gonna go chill in the corner now. But my overall (poorly conveyed) point still stands.

      • Robinson Tilapia says:

I actually thought this one was pretty funny in its openendedness.

  13. Wayne says:

As far as kuroda goes I wonder if two days extra rest will screw him up he seems to do better with regular rest. I would pitch david phelps in game four if yanks lose with kuroda tommorrow , not Sabathia. I don’t like sabathia with short rest. He is the right pitcher to me and my gut tells me he will handle the pressure. Not that cc can’t handle pressure mentally but with injury concerns I just don’t get a good feeling about it. If the yankees win then put in Hughes for game four.

    • jjyank says:

Wait…so if the Yankees lose, you turn to Phelps, a rookie, in an elimination game. But if they win, you don’t go to Phelps in game 4? This makes no sense to me. I have no problem with Hughes in game 4, CC in game 5, which is what they’re doing. Don’t get my wrong, I like Phelps, and he’s impressed me overall this year. But he got rocked the last time he faced the O’s, and isn’t exactly some blue-chip, lights out potential prospect here. This is not the time of the year to put on your “play teh kidz” cap.

    • MannyGeee says:

Kuroda has look cooked in his past few starts… I bet at 38, he could use the extra few days rest. I would worry less about Hirok than about other pitchers that are younger…

    • forensic says:

He was great on 5 days rest but terrible on 6 (in only 3 starts). Who knows what to expect…

  14. DT says:

Melky is probably sitting at home and laughing at the Giants.

  15. MannyGeee says:

sabean: “Well, looks like Brian Wilson is out for the season with Tommy John Surgury. What do you want to do for a closer, Bruce?”

bochy: “who else can we get with a fucking disgusting beard? Sergio Romo’s availible? PERFECT!”

  16. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Dave Cameron wants the Mariners to sign Swisher for 7/100.

    • MannyGeee says:

Yeah, because that will fix them…

All joking aside, Swish is a good fit for their needs, not positive he’d thrive in Seattle though. He’s in a Big City state of mind, and regardless of how much we’ve all discussed his suckitude, you got to admit he’s a fit here in the Bronx…

      • Robinson Tilapia says:

Seattle’s not exactly backwoods country, though. Anything is smaller scale than NYC, but there’s enough there.

        • MannyGeee says:

Maybe of a county boy like me, but Seattle isn’t big enough to hold Swishers Aura!

I just honestly feel like he’s the kind of guy who wants to play ball somewhere that people give a shit past July

          • forensic says:

I guess they’d have the King’s corner and Swish’s seats? Swish’s section? They always do dumb shit like that since they can’t root for wins or anything like that.

    • forensic says:

At least they wouldn’t have to worry about his postseason hitting.

      Too easy?

    • jjyank says:

…whoa. I love me some Swish, and I’d like to see him back next year. But not if they would have to outbid that. 7/100? Wow.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Also interesting that he wants Montero to start the year in AAA to switch to 1B.

  17. I will flip the hell out if I see Miguel Gonzalez Changeup shut this team down in the Bronx AGAIN tomorrow night.

No need to let a AAAA schmuck do that three times in three months.

  18. Robert Heenan says:

See? Playoffs really are decided by grit and defense. Especially in the National League, which features baseball in its true and honest form, before Original Sin (the DH).

  19. pistol pete says:

Joquin Arias just reached on an error to give the Giants a 2 to 1 lead in the NLDS game. Arias was chosen by Texas over Robinson Cano in 2003 when the Yankees sent Soriano to Texas for ARod. Texas wanted a middle infielder added to the deal and the Yankees offered either Arias or Cano whomever they wanted. Texas chose Arias and the Yankees luckily kept Cano. Anyone who thinks they know how great a player will be when they are 20 years old are only kidding themselves. Thank you Texas.

    • MannyGeee says:

Yeah but arias gets his uniform dirty.

But in all seriousness, they woulda taken cano and we would have like Chone Figgins or some shit starting 2B for the Yankees today. Talk about dodging a fucking bullet, huh…

  20. pistol pete says:

Who pitches game 4 if the Yankees lose game 3?

    • forensic says:

I leave it as Hughes. He’s going to have to pitch game 5 anyway if you don’t, so better to match him up with Tillman/Saunders than hammel.

      • jjyank says:

Exactly. They could roll with CC on short rest, but for game 5, they would need 40 year old, recently returned from injury Andy on short rest. Or Hughes. I love Andy as much as anyone, but that would be expecting too much, in my opinion.

Just hedge your bets with Hughes in game 4, and CC in game 5, if it comes to that.

        • Robinson Tilapia says:

Ah, now I’m starting to get the rationale here. The schedule does not do anyone any favors.

OK….so let’s, for shits and giggles, put CC and Andy out there on three days rest.

          Wed: Kuroda
          Thu: CC
          Friday: Andy
          Saturday (ALCS)becomes Hughes
Sunday (ALCS) would become Phelps, or Kuroda on three days rest

Yeah, that would create a minor little predicament there. The counterargument would be that you worry about the ALCS when you get there.

          • jjyank says:

Yup. In a vacuum, I think you start CC on three days rest. But it’s a bit more complicated than that.

            • Robinson Tilapia says:

I’m not 100% sold. I may throw the vets out there on three days rest and go with 4/5 in the ALCS if we get there. This wouldn’t be an easy call for me.

              • jjyank says:

I feel ya. The part that gets me, with the vets thing though, is this: Andy took a year off. He’s 40. He recently came back from an injury. Short rest? Maybe, it is Andy. I won’t bet against him. And then there’s Kuroda, who (to my knowledge) has never pitched on 3 days rest before.

Just seems like a lot of gamble to me. Hell, we threw 2011 AJ out there in a game 4 elimination last year, and it worked. Crazier things have happened.

    • FIPster Doofus says:

Sabathia. Trusting Hughes to extend the season would be a facepalm-worthy decision. I’ll take my chances with Pettitte on short rest in Game 5.

  21. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Wow, nice catch.

  22. forensic says:

Wow, what a catch By Coco.

  23. Pasta Stumbling Sojo says:

Why is everyone saying that the Yanks’ game 4 starter should depend on the outcome of game 3? No matter the outcome of game 3, you want to give yourself the best chance to win game 4. Whichever choice that is, that’s what you should go with whether they’re up 2-1 or down 2-1.

    • jjyank says:

Nah, just pistol pete (who merely implied it, to be fair) and Wayne are advocating that. I think the rest of us are in agreement.

      • forensic says:

There are actually a bunch of people who want CC on short rest. I’ve seen it at least 2 or 3 times today.

        • MannyGeee says:

Those bunch of people want IBAÑEZ starting Over Swisher. Sooooooo…. Yep

          • forensic says:

Eh, some of them are level-headed regulars, I just disagree with their reasoning.

          • Robinson Tilapia says:

Well……but wait…….if the team is facing elimination, why wouldn’t you want your ace on short rest? Maybe I’m missing something here, but that doesn’t sound wrong on face value.

            • forensic says:

Sure, but they are almost certainly not going to start Pettitte on short rest, so you’re going to have to start Hughes anyway. Better to have him against their 4th starter than Hammel.

        • jjyank says:

I thought he was talking about the “if they lose tomorrow, is it Phelps or Hughes in game 4 thing” I read above.

Like I said elsewhere in this thread, I would take CC on short rest in a vacuum. But it’s not quite that simple. If the Yankees lose tomorrow, and CC takes game 4, either Hughes pitches, or Andy on short rest pitches. And if they get to the ALCS, we have Kuroda on short rest pitching game 1 (and to my knowledge, he’s never pitched on 3 days rest before).

Just stick with the plan, IMO. Kuroda tomorrow, Hughes in game 4, CC if game 5 is needed.

          • pistol pete says:

The problem with CC on short rest if the Yanks lose game 3 is that it jeopardizes the next round badly. That said who on this blog wouldn’t rather have CC on 3 days vs Hughes with the season on the line. Kuroda must win game 3 and take the pressure off Girardi. If the Yanks win it’s easy Hughes in game 4 and CC if necessary in game 5. On the Arod front he’s not coming out of the lineup. That’s the problem with veteran bench players on a highly paid team, they don’t play in the post season. I don’t see Chavez getting an at bat in this series unless he pinch hits for a righty and the only righty Joe might pinch hit for is Martin. He’ll never pinch hit for Arod.

            • jjyank says:

And that is the point I was making. I mostly agree with this. Maybe give Chavez a start against a righty, especially if they end up playing 5 in a row. And as I said several time, CC on short rest, in a vacuum, is my preference. Unfortunately, it is not in a vacuum.

  24. Camd80 says:

If we are looking for a win tomorrow night why is it so terrible to bench Arod and start Chavez at third……Chavez has it in him to have a GREAT Game….Arod does not…..He looks lost…..Is Girardi worried about hurting Arod’s feelings? While I am at it how about Ichiro in right…Bench Swisher and start Ibanez in Left ? I mean really. Enough already with these chokes……I don’t get it !

    • ArchStanton says:

Honestly, I’ve been thinking this over all day and it seems so obvious that Chavez should start. I’m not one of those knee-jerk A-Rod haters, but we usually don’t have an option like Chavez in these scenarios. If Boggs can sit for Charlie Hayes, then A-Rod can sit too.

I know he hit his first two balls pretty hard, but he looked so ungodly bad on the other other three…

      • pistol pete says:

Get over it Arod is not coming out of the lineup I just hope Joe shakes up the lineup, he’s killing Cano batting between Arod and Swisher both who are cold.

    • MannyGeee says:

Did you come up with all this stuff all yourself? I mean, it all seems pretty simple, why didn’t anyone suggest these changes yet today?

You should submit a tip on Yankees.com, Cashman reads those, you know.

(I know, im being a dick.. Just kinda over the “choker” meme already)

Talk about a mega fall for Brennan Boesch.

  26. MannyGeee says:

    predictions on this Detroit&Oakland game/series?

    • forensic says:

I just want it to go five. I can’t choose one I’d want the Yankees to face, they both have things I don’t want them to deal with, but at least go five and use the #1 starters again.

  27. MannyGeee says:

Also, Gerald Laird looks less like an athlete and more like a longshoreman…. That is all

  28. John R. says:

So the Rangers are gonna let Hamilton test free agency. I know it’s sort of a long shot, but does anyone else think he’d be a pretty good fit with the short porch? (also assuming his terrible finish isn’t a sign of things to come)

  29. Darren says:

Off days in the playoffs are tense, man. I’m basically waiting holding my breath until tomorrow. let’s play!

  30. forensic says:

Josh Reddick not enjoying his expected freefall back to his expected level/mediocrity.

  31. forensic says:

    Yay Seth Smith.

  32. Joe F says:

    Brett Anderson has ace stuff.

  33. Robinson Tilapia says:

This is kinda hilarious. A family friend of my mother’s posted this on my timeline:

“your old buddy AROD reverting to usual post season form. wasted a gutty performance by pettite.
i hate spell check. kept trying to change “pettite” to “petite”.”

If I didn’t know any better, and if this wasn’t the man who got Jeter to sign a card for me that I keep in a safe, I’d say he was stuart a.

  34. pistol pete says:

Three outs from Balfour and the A’s push Detroit to a game 4 and hopefully a game 5 that will use Verlander twice in the series, here’s hoping.

  35. CUYanks says:

This is a great article that all the A-Rod haters of the world should read:

  36. Rocky Road Redemption says:

I think if we lose tomorrow we start CC on short rest Thrsday.

Fuck future plans. If we lose game 3, we’re out-in a win or go home situation you try and tread water for as long as you can, and that means your Ace needs to be out as soon as possible. You can’t plan for the future in a must-win.
